    Very nice indeed. A very common mistake seems to be, that many sailors try to get planning while navigating across the wind or worse, slightly upwind even. That would require a lot more wind ...
    When a gust looks promising, investing into a few degrees more downwind while bending the backfoot in order to get lower and apply more downforce is helpful as you stated in this nice tutorial. Keep it up.

    You already mention board and sail size, thank you. I think that is very important so one can compare to own gear. Could you also mention the wind speed in your videos? That would help for choosing gear, knowing what you can or cannot do in specific winds.

      I’ll see if I can measure the wind speed, I’m never very good at that- I just know by looking that a Xm will work well for me!
      It’s worth noting there are so many variables about selecting kit that is not just the wind speed... Type/size of board you are on, type/size of finn you are on, type of sail, water conditions, where in the world (denser wind) not to mention technique itself!
      Someone who is very skilled can get going on a 4.0m, whilst someone else may need a 4.5 or 5m!
      I’ll have a think about the Patreon thing, thanks for offering!

    Enjoying your videos, very good explanations of the minor details which make all the difference between planing and not planing, losing height or not. Interesting that there are many different opinions about getting in the front footstrap. I get into it usually (on my futura) when the board just starts planing, because when doing it before my board will rear and can’t find the speed. However I’m now in gusty and choppy Fuerte on a JP MagicRide and it feels a bit uncontrolled to get in late. On this board riding with the foot in before planing feels possible. When I get in with a gust coming and bear away a bit the planing starts.

    • @Cookiesports
      @Cookiesports  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching and glad you're enjoying them!
      I think the how early the front foot goes in depends on what is about to happen... if you know you have power stick the foot in early and you can use the power to drive it off the wind and onto the plain- the moment it kicks into the wind doesn't matter as the power you have will help you kick it off the wind again.
      When it's less windy and you jump into the strap be more patient, you need the board as flat as you can for as long as you can to get up to speed- jumping in it early will cause the board to go up and you won't have the power to bring it back off the wind or flat again.

      To answer your question… a little forward with the UJ you’ll likely find it a little easier to get planning, but your top speeds will be slower and it’ll be harder to go up wind.
      A little back with the UJ and you can go faster, but need a lot more control to to the board turned off the wind and into the straps.
      I’ve got a video on this coming soon so stay tuned!

    • @Cookiesports
      @Cookiesports  4 роки тому +6

      Hi Pitachaja, Thanks for watching!
      Wider lines does not mean more power, just means the power is more spread out. In fact having the wider could result in have the front one too far forward, sheeting out and loosing power, or could end up with them too far back, over sheeting and stalling power! Setting them to just the right point- and really knowing exactly where that right point is, is a skill in it's self!

    • @Cookiesports
      @Cookiesports  4 роки тому +5

      Thanks! Common riggings issues are people don't DH enough thinking it gives them power- you need a soft flappy leach so sail can twist and create lift. Similar with OH, often people put too little on thinking more belly give power, but then too much belly and the sail sits/creases off the boom and create drag (and hurts your back hand).
      High boom can really help though, you'll notice on starboard tack in this video the camera is blow the boom and you can see how high I have it.
      I've steered a little away from kit- chat videos so far and stuck with the "ride-along" style, but think I may branch out soon!

    using a centerboard?

    • @Cookiesports
      @Cookiesports  4 роки тому

      Hi Simon!
      Great choice of board, really good fun!
      Centreboard is only for light enough wind that you can’t get going, if you think you can get going kick the centre board away as it’ll mess up the trim of the board if it’s in the water when the board is giving you lift.
      TBH the main key points apply on your board as with the ones I’m filming on here- nothing special or crazy to do....
      Select the gust to try to get going in.
      Keep the board as flat as you can by driving through your front foot, toes in particular.
      Squeeze in the power in by committing out and back to windward of the board, pulling down through your hands and the harness and pushing the front hand away to help sheet the sail.
      👍👍👍👍

    Going up wind in light winds would be fab. I can get going alright, but getting back where I started out from is still a bit of an issue. Also when I practice jibes, going upwind is exhausting and painfully slow. I'd be great to know how to keep speed up as much as possible while going upwind. I ride a twinser freeride board and I wonder whether that could be the reason I am going upwind at slower speeds than other riders. Or maybe it's just my technique.

    • @Cookiesports
      @Cookiesports  4 роки тому

      Hi!
      Great to hear you enjoyed the video! Slow upwind could well be the board or technique... but remember the elements of windsurfing outlined in this video...
      ua-cam.com/video/co1LTl5JHG4/v-deo.html
      Upwind Elemenet breakdown..
      VISION- head, shoulders, hips, and leading foot all turn to look upwind.
      TRIM- The board needs to be flat from front to back to stay fast, the board need minimal heel edge pressure to get upwind- but not so much to slow you down- subtle!
      COUNTERBALANCE- arms remain extended, rig away. If the rig goes back you pull your body forward- this will help keep the board flat too.
      POWER- stays on! do this by pushing hard through your extended front arm, and ensuring your harness lines are far enough back that the sail stays closed.
      STANCE- a straight, upright body is efficient. It is tough as you'll always be on the edge of being pulled around the front, but being upright, and forward with your body will help... the vision, flattening the board, allowing the rig to go back and stay powered up.
      👍👍👍👍👍

    • @slickvisualpoetry
      @slickvisualpoetry 4 роки тому +1

      @@Cookiesports Okay. Identified two mistakes already: Too much heel-pressure and front-arm not fully extended. But whenever I stop doing that, I begin bearing away. Doing them both fully will cause you to bear away, sounds like you're at a point we're the movements are correct but need to be a little more subtle, or even one at a time... extend the front arm with a little heel pressure, to stop you going too quickly into a downwind position. 👌

    • @slickvisualpoetry
      @slickvisualpoetry 4 роки тому

      @@Cookiesports I'll give it a try. I guess my home spot is also not the easiest to work with. It is a lake with rather patchy wind and the runs are not particularly long. If I want to crank out as many jibes as possible, I have to go upwind aggressively. Maybe I'll try it the other way around: keeping the board more flat with less heel pressure while pulling the mast over just a little. I'll try both options, I guess.

  • @pl3841
    @pl3841 3 роки тому +1

    Hi Cookie. I've noticed that your feet are on the windward side of the board when you are not planing.
    I'm putting my feet in the middle of the board instead. Am I wrong ??

    • @Cookiesports
      @Cookiesports  3 роки тому +3

      Hi PL!
      Thanks for watching, and a great question. I’ll try my best to explain an answer...
      - to stay upwind when not planning you just engage the windward side of the board into the water, this creates lateral resistance and allows you to stay/go up-wind.
      - to get planning you need to get the board flat.
      - as the board gets faster you need to get further out and further back one the board to control the lift.
      So you have an option... either move your feet a lot to be in the right position depending on what you’re trying to do (tough to do without a lot of skill, experience and energy!)...
      Or stay a little further back and out, but control the boards trim (how flat it is) but either heel or toe pressure. This same heel/toe pressure is how I steer up/down wind when not planning.
      So, when you see me not planning and standing on the windward rail I have some heel pressure to give me the resistance in the water and stay up wind.
      When the wind hits and I’m trying to get going I then (without moving my feet) push hard through my toes- in particular through the toes on my front foot. This gets the board flat and will allow the board to speed up.
      No need for excess movement on the board- just controlling how the board is trimmed through foot pressure changes.
      I hope that makes a bit of sense?!

      Hahah! It’s a bit of metal, hammered flat with a go-pro style thing on it! Move promised everyone asking that if/when I hit 10,000 subs I’ll do a full intro to my camera set up.

    You have vid for light wind waterstarts? i.e.- holding mast and sail bottom. Lots of instruct vid for high wind waterstarts but nothing at the most critical point - getting back when wind dies🤔😒

    When the sail is pulled back and down, what stops the back end from washing out... you need speed on the fin, but you need to get going before adjusting back and down... clearly I don’t get it... arg

      Push though the front toes, that'll drive the board flat and forward and not spin you out.
      New video coming soon will touch on this point!
