    Thank you so much for your tutorial! My 2002 impreza outback hatch I bought in May 2018 had no leaks and after our first freeze, i started leaking a lot of oil on the drivers side. (Chicago here) So BIG thanks for this. I've learned a lot. =]

    Honda bond is a great stuff to hold a Gaskets into place. I usually only in the areas like the Cam Bridges and the "Case to Cylinder" 3 point sealing surface. Great video Brian. I know that feeling what you said 6:16. I just recently had a "Friend" had me do all kinds of work on his quad Rebuilt it with a big bore kit ported head, upgraded carb etc turned it into beast. Then he went to his brother "Which is my best friend" bitching all because I used a Piece of Rubber Hose to space the Fuel Tank up a slight bit higher because it was missing the Rubber Damper for the tank and he was rushing me to get the quad back to him so I did what I could ya know? But won't admit he said that about me. I hate people like that still never paid me either so I told him not to worry about paying me for labor or Machine work after I paid 200 Bucks worth of machine work to be done and an additional 15 hours of Labor. I'm to nice of a guy. I just got fed up.

    Just wanted to say thanks for the videos. This one came out just in time for me, as I'll be pulling my motor on my 09 this weekend to check the leak out on the drivers side. Bought it with 127k and stripped the timing belt back in the spring so I used your videos and others as well as 2.5i manual to do a complete rebuild. Its been running great, minus the slight oil leak and sometimes it will smoke a little on first startup (hoping that has to do with the gasket or seal). Anyway hoping the grey gasket maker seals up the drivers side and that I don't find anymore leaks. Thanks again for your videos and especially you attention to detail. You've helped save me 1000's.

    Thank you! I wish I had watched this before doing this job when my engine was out of the car. I used genuine gaskets but no sealant or gasket maker and when I got it all out back together it started leaking almost immediately, it was such a terrible feeling. I have let it leak for 2 years now because I thought I would have to pull the engine to get this done. You showed it's possible and that's all I needed to know, thanks!

    Far as I clean things, I use cheap 2” paint brushes and 1” paint brushes with Purple Power and then spray brake cleaner to clean off excess…
    Also love watching your videos , I took on the easy task of replacing the CV Axles on my 2001 Subaru Forester…When I marked the tie rods ( Testor white paint mini jar ) I took the car to get an alignment…My mechanic said the front end was find and the rear was out a little!! Thanks for your videos!!

    Cool vid. Thanks for taking the time to make it. If you have twisted a valve cover bolt on a flat engine it will make you a believer in torquing.... I think those are only 4-5 lbs. That's inch-pound territory.

    "half moon seals" aka camshaft "end?" Seals? People were mentioning doing those also on a valve cover gasket replacement which I was gonna do..

    Nice work! I enjoy your narration and thoughts. And yea, I have to agree with why the factory does certain things in certain places when they build cars. If they're building a 100,000 vehicles and see a need for a wire tie or clamp somewhere that cost a dollar they're sure not going to include it if its not necessary!

    Good way to do subaru rocker cover gaskets,
    Do a few dots of sealent inside where the gasket sits, then insert,and turn up side down with light weight
    After a few hours,it's going to give you a good easy install
    That's the way I do them

    Brian, an old Subaru fan like you aught to know the dip stick always gives a false reading on this engine when you first pull it. I never bothered to investigate but I assume the dip stick is near horizontal where it enters the pan.
    The other neat thing Subaru does with this engine and its oil is to put the drain plug on the side of the pan. When the plug is pulled oil shoots out sideways landing beside not in the catch pan. Keep the oil dry handy.

    • @leebarnes655
      @leebarnes655 7 років тому +3

      The case of the first pull mystery has been solved by sherlock. This issue is only happening on dipsticks that are sealed with an air tight O ring at the top. Trapped air in there pushes oil out as the engine warms up, blows a bubble or two at peak temp and then sucks extra oil up into the tube as it cools giving the errant first pull reading of way too doggone high. Subsequent dips read correctly. All the best, Watson.

    • @lorrinbarth1969
      @lorrinbarth1969 7 років тому

      The dip stick tube would have to enter below the oil level for this to work which seems kinda odd. But if it does, you've nailed it. I love these little mysteries.

    Of course when the factory did this they had the major advantage of not having a chassis in the way to block any access to the engine, plus there was no oil in there in any form till the final steps of filling the oil galleys and putting the oil pressure sensor in the block.

    Recently i bought a 2013 impreza 2.0i and the third cylinder has a misfire. I took out the coilpack, saw oil all over it, got my phone down there with the light on and recording and all i saw was an oil flooded spark plug hole and a gasket showing from the top. I would just do the repair myself, but i have a warranty on this car so it will be a free repair when i take it in on monday. Im just too lazy to get around to it. lol thanks for this video though, helps for future reference.

    At 8:00 I thought you'd put the bottom rear bolt (that wouldn't clear the body) into the cover before you set it down into place?
    At 16:00 I thought that on all cars the lower numbered cylinders are at the front of the car. EG, cylinders 1 and 2 would have the white tabs.

    Would you use the permatex gasket maker around the spark plug tube seals too? I Used fel-pro gaskets and 30,000 miles later I saw some oil on my spark plugs during my 90K tuneup along with a faint burning oil smell with a/c or heater on. I'd like a repair to last a little longer this time so I'm thinking about using your gasket maker technique.

      @briansmobile1  7 років тому

      Grounds are vital on a 12V system (low pressure)- especially if you have a sound system with an amp or live in the rust belt. The factory ones are fine, but more will only help get those little electron pixies in batteryville out to work in the cars electrical system.

    I have two of these engines and instead of fixing the leak by doing the gaskets, I just use snake oil to slow the leaks. Preventive maintenance. The old EJ22, these rocker arm gaskets took five minutes to replace. This EJ25 is way too time consuming and complex to mess with unless you really have to do it where you got visible puddle under your car and fumes in your cab. If Subaru released EJ25 instead of the EJ22 in 1990, the company would have been dead by 1999.

    • @lorrinbarth1969
      @lorrinbarth1969 7 років тому

      The WRX engine is cam on bucket - no lifters.

    • @briansmobile1
      @briansmobile1  7 років тому

      Ya- feeler gauges like these between the cam lobes in the round positions and the buckets amzn.to/2e37ZYe The clearance for the exhaust (bottom side) and intake (top side) specifications are often printed on the Emissions tag. If your gauge is too loose- you need to pull that bucket and add a little puck to the inside bottom center of the bucket that is thicker. You use bigger gauges till you find a fit- then write down what it is. Take that measure and subtract what the Emissions tag says it should be. This is the golden number you need to add to what the shim is that's in the bucket. Then pull out the bucket and measure the shim it came with and add that golden number (tiny number) to it. That's the size of the new shim you need to take up the slack that is rattling if it's valve adjustment that's needed. You have to remove the timing belt and camshafts to do this.

      There's a special Subaru tool called a shim replacer that allows this job to be done without removing cams. The timing belt cover does have to come off.

      Way to go Ernie! Glad to hear it. If your valve stem seals get worn out it can cause a little smoke on start up, but sometimes Subaru's will do that with a little cylinder wall wear. They're horizontally apposed which means oil can creep horizontally into the compression chamber past the piston rings in super small quantities if you have some cylinder wall scoring and run synthetic or light weight oil. It's generally nothing to freak out about though.

      briansmobile1 yea i was hopping its valve seal. The valve seals are new along with the intake and exaust valves, but thier not subaru brand and a local dealer told me non subaru stems seals tend to leak. valves aren't subaru either. A guy I know that use to build motors said its probably the new rings I put in because I didnt score/hone the cylinder walls, said they probably didnt seat properly. I've never seen cylinder walls before this but the cross hatching was still there from factory. I didn't know about honing the cylinder walls till after I built the motor, so it might be oil leaking past the rings. I have to say it was a pretty exciting moment turning the key on my first engine rebuild, pretty nerve racking actually. Maybe a video on cylinder wall or rings sometime in the future? Anyway thanks again for the videos.
