- We all know that BMW's M engines are no stranger to wearing their Rod Bearings a little more than we'd all like. It's been a hot topic especially for S65/S85 owners, but we haven't heard so much about it on the S55 found in the M2C/M3/M4 - Does this mean BMW have fixed the problem?
Well there's only one way to find out, during the Crank Hub upgrade on Matt's M4 we dived a little deeper and pulled the standard Rod Bearings out to see just how worn they are after 130,000 miles. We then upgrade them with Mahle Motorsport Bearings.

Finally, that is good news to hear. Rod bearing issues at this point in newer M engines was an aggravation not needed. Good info and video. I will be closely watching as Evolve goes through the issues on the E63 M6. Thanks.

Makes me feel good I have 60,000 miles on my F80 bought it at 50,000 and added a pinned crank hub and Stage 2+ tune with flex fuel ethanol
This is why it’s important for N55 235i owners to get a baffled/M2 sump fitted 👍

Great video. Glad you guys stayed honest, lots of shops are fear mongering and pushing people to swap bearings around 100k KM (62k miles) on the s55.

I really like you using your platform, expertise, and available shop tools and accessories, to help those who don’t have these things available to them, understand the reliability of this car. Mods are mods. Most enthusiasts do the same mods and install them themselves. Understanding a cars reliability, especially Euro branded cars, is very important. We all know about the crank hub, leaks, waterpump, etc on this car and others. Diving into it deeper like you did here, so that us future buyers of these used cars, is something big YT’rs like yourself, who have the tools and accessories available to them with ease, don’t do very well. So I’m thankful you have made this video to share with us.
Just a FYI. I saw you mentioned that rod bearings have been plaguing //M cars for the last 20 years. That’s actually false. It 100% plagued the E90/92/93 M3, but despite what the “internet” says about it plaguing E46 M3’s, that’s actually false information. Yeah, once these kids started buying E46 M3’s when they became cheap, and either they or its previous owner(s) not maintaining them well, then all these new owners started saying rod bearings were an issue. Not the case at all. There are a big many of us E46 M3 owners who have owned the car years before these kids, and never had any rod bearing issues even with well over 150k, 200k miles. My personal 2003.5 E46 M3 Coupe 6spd has never had an issue, and it’s over 180k miles FBO and supercharged. Don’t believe what the internet says…

Thank you for posting that, for years (on & off) I've been trying to find good photos etc of high mileage rod bearings, and I've found almost none of a complete set! (and about 1/2 a dozen of incomplete sets). I even tried contacting a couple of 'engine shops' to see if I could visit them to take photos of good old bearings! lol (1 didn't respond, the other did and thought it was a great idea, but then fell silent! 🙄)
Great video. I had my crank hub done at 51k miles. With hindsight I should have had these bearings installed as it doesn’t look like a huge amount of incremental time.
It’s not a huge amount extra to do both at the same time

Great video. I note that you didn't Plastigauge the new bearings (or didn't show it on the film if you did) - is that an unnecessary step on these engines?
Different oil viscosity, different cap clearance and a turbo to help warm the oil up quicker too.
Been running the s55 oil sump, with upgraded bearings, it’s safe to say my n55 will be perfectly fine if I maintain her

One of my rod bearings spun at 63k. Full service history car but running stage 3 power. Luckily it didn't totally ko the engine and just required a bottom end rebuild.

This video follows on from the crank hub! We did them both at the same time.
We do not have an alignment setup, there may be slight movement that requires realignment whenever the subframe is dropped.
Great to see this. I have a 2015 F82 with 94k miles, full BMW service history. Interested to see gearbox service as mine has not been done 😬
Having driven multiple F8x with DCT I can tell that this car would benefit from a DCT service and re-adaptation.
The only reason we didn’t do it as part of our initial maintenance is because surprisingly this car doesn’t have a DCT sump gasket leak like many do, but it’s something we’ll be doing in the future.

Would love to see a test on a s65/s85 car that’s been owned from new by one owner - warmed up properly every time and on plus 100k. Bet the bearings would be mint.
We did a one owner E92 M3 on 230,000 miles and the bearings were similar to our 152,000 mile car.
@@EvolveAutomotive No way! That’s cool, so it shows if you really look after the car and warm it up properly they aren’t really an issue. If you owned it from new of course or put a fresh set of bearings in to a potentially abused car!
We've always said the main issue is you just don't know how the previous owners have treated the cars, and that with proper care and maintenance they should last a very long time.

Are rod bearings an issue on the S63TU ? Not sure I’ve seen anything from yourselves that mentions it in detail?
This rod bearing change was surprisingly easy. Granted the only rod bearing vids I've watched were for the S63, S65 or S85 which are all "V" shaped engines.

Hi Imran, I am interested to know how frequent the oil change intervals have been and also which oil you use.
I have a Stage 2+ N55 M2 using 5w-40 LL01 changing at 5000km intervals in Australia.

This car has been serviced to BMWs intervals by BMW until Matt purchased it. We’ll now be doing oil changes every 10,000 miles and with Motul oil.

So can you asnwer the question as to what has changed, and is it transportable over to the older M engines?
There’s so many variables that we can’t really compare between two completely different engines. That may be a question Mr VANOS would be more equipped to answer.
I wonder if the lower revving turbo engines mean less friction to deal with...

You need to completely disassemble the engine to get to the main bearings.

The difference between an engine using 5W30 vs 10W60. Owners don't need to be as careful with warming up the oil...
BMW have never had a rod bearing issue.
They've had an issue with dumb asses ragging them from stone cold when leased for the first few years.
While I think BMW could have solved the rod bearing issues earlier. Lease owners/ignorant owners running the car hard when cold as you mentioned is most likely the issue with most rod bearing failures.
You're right. Have mines changed in the E60 M5 after 168000 kms for the first time. So its possible...
@@E60M5-Estoril I won’t be changing rod bearings for my E93 S65 till 80k miles. The majority of S85 and S65s that have regular maintenance don’t have rod bearing issues… now throttle actuators is another story 😅
@@jovaneghtesadi1494S65 have not only rod bearing issues, but main bearings as well!!!
@jovaneghtesadi1494 the difference is that failed Throttle Actuators just leave you in limp mode. A failed rod bearing ruins your whole engine
Lots of German $$$$$ Cars have major design defects. They avoid recalls....so you never hear about them. Yes #Porsche you too.
The BMW M3 S65 V8/S85 V10 had lead/copper rod bearings, which are soft. So they wear due to lack of lubrication with a tight bearing tolerance. After 2011, BMW switched to harder aluminum/tin rod bearings...and so M3 rod bearing failures were less prevalent. The key is to change oil frequently and have it checked with an oil analysis. Keep the mileage down below 80k-100k miles on your ///M Cars. They are not Toyota Camrys that can go to 200k-350k miles.
So what is the main reason the old other ones failed aside from poor maintenance? Is it a poorer quality material?
Yea youd think after 15 years they wouldve fixed this but they keep the same sh1t for cost
