They exposed so much about what they do behind closed doors in Hollywood in this movie. Never knew it as a kid, just enjoyed it. Now as an adult it's blatant
In the 80's and early 90's the UK's British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) technically didn't ban nunchucks outright. Bizarrely they only banned then with a chain connecting them. So the TMNT cartoon just made Michelangelo's Nunchucks connect by a rope in post production. Same with the 1990 life action movie, they changed them to be connected by a rope and not a chain. The BBFC have always been a bit weird with what they will and wont allow on screen.
You may want to look into an US show called "The Master" from 1984. It only ran for 13 episodes. But it caused quite a stir in Europe and the UK. As the show made the Ninja throwing stars rather popular with kids at the time. I believe the show even got banned in several countries. This uproar caused a whole backlash on anything ninja because of the violence on the show. And was most likely (directly or indirectly) the reason Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles became Hero Turtles in the UK. And why the Ninja scene was deleted from the movie in de UK.
In Germany there is a TV series based on “Dragnet”, called “Stahlnetz” (English: Steelnet). There were 22 episodes made between 1958 to 1968, and it used the same “duh-da-da-dum-dum…” intro. From 1999 to 2003 it was continued for 6 episodes, but wasn’t received well. The original “Dragnet” was named “Polizeibericht” (police report) in Germany. The movie was released as “Schlappe Bullen beißen nicht” (weak cops don’t bite) - there is some lame titling here 🙄
Actually, the revival movie came out in 1968, not '69. The series (after the success of the movie) restarted in 1969. And, Ackroyd didn't play Joe Friday on SNL, he played Elliot Ness from "The Untouchables." The more you know.
The revival TV-movie was filmed in 1966. However, NBC didn't air it until 1969, after the revival series had been on the air for two years. The TV movie finally aired between episodes 15 and 16 of Dragnet's 3rd season.
Not ever mentioned or shown up close in Ghostbusters, the characters wear an expensive SEIKO Voice Note watch that is often sought after by fans. Love Dragnet! Awesome video, Minty!
I loved DRAGNAT since I was a kid and teaming up Tom Hanks and Dan Aykroyd as these two cops is so hilarious! By the way: In Germany, nobody knew about the DRAGNAT Series at the time when the movie has been released. So, for the distributers it probably would not have made any sense to go for the original title because nobody would have been able to identify with „the brand“ DRAGNAT. Moreover, on the other hand it is quite a common thing in Germany and the German speaking territories “to Germanise” foreign movie titles. Or at least to add a ridiculous German explanatory title after the original title of the movie. In German the word BULLEN is indeed a metaphor (or even a swearword) for cops. So, although both Aykroyd and Hanks were already huge stars in the 80s, I guess the German distributers wanted to add a funny, catchy supplement to the "for us" unkown DRAGNET brand and mixed the phrase thoroughly with the proverb “Dogs that bark don't bite” --> “Limp cops don't bite = Schlappe Bullen beissen nicht”). Whatever that was supposed to mean... That´s quite annoying because lots of these additional German titles often make no sense. For instance with movie titles like: “Escape from N.Y. = DIE KLAPPERSCHLANGE“ (-> which means: THE RATTLESNAKE) „Dawn of the dead = ZOMBIES IM KAUFHAUS“ (-> which means: ZOMBIES IN THE MALL) „Stripes = ICH GLAUB’ MICH KNUTSCHT EIN ELCH!“ (-> which means: I THINK I'M BEING SMOOCHED BY A MOOSE) „Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind = VERGISS MEIN NICHT!“ (-> which means: DON'T FORGET MINE) „The Pacifier = DER BABYNATOR“ (...THE BABYNATOR ?!) „Wag the dog = Wenn der Schwanz mit dem Hund wedelt“ (-> which means: WHEN THE TAIL WAGS THE DOG) „Quigley Down Under = QUIGLEY, DER AUSTRALIER“ (-> which means: QUIGLEY, THE AUSTRALIAN. although the protagonist is an American sniper!) And of course „Die Hard = Stirb Langsam“ (-> which means: DIE SLOWLY…!!!) It´s such nonsense, you should make a whole standalone Video about this 🤣 Greetings from Berlin (which is the capitol of Germany) See ya! 😅
When Dragnet got green lit by the studio John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd were who the script was originally written for. Unfortunately, John died of a drug overdose and a replacement had to be found. Tom Hanks did a great job but next time you watch the movie think about John Belushi and how different the Pep Streebek lines would come across. Like the introduction to the character and the Pagan party... We missed out hugely.
I used to love this film as a kid but the last time I tried to watch it I was disappointed... Which disappointed me 😂. Still has an epic theme tune though! Point of interest, the nunchuck scene and where the young thug tries to take Friday's head off with a spin kick were only edited out in TV broadcasts. The VHS tapes you could rent or buy still had all those scenes intact. Same goes for Weekend at Bernie's. Maybe I just wasn't in a good place at the time and need to rewatch them both again in the spirit of fairness. Great video, Minty!
When I first got access to a VHS recorder, this was the first film I recorded off the telly, so as you can guess it got a lot of views. I recently got it on BluRay and it’s still not stale, even if I know by heart where the jokes are coming.

Personally. I do think it is a classic in my eyes. I wish this version had a sequel. I wish more Dan Akroyd projects would come out in general. And remember to always be polite when asking for a Snickers & Chewing Gum. Or else it's the draw for you Sonny. (Nes Manga)
I love this movie AND the song "Helplessly in Love" performed by New Edition ❤❤❤❤
I loved Dragnet when it came out and i'm still fond of it now.I used to know every word off by heart.
They exposed so much about what they do behind closed doors in Hollywood in this movie. Never knew it as a kid, just enjoyed it. Now as an adult it's blatant
Pep's wristwatch TV was also used briefly in a season 11 Cheers episode.
The Dick Tracy watch ⌚
In the 80's and early 90's the UK's British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) technically didn't ban nunchucks outright. Bizarrely they only banned then with a chain connecting them. So the TMNT cartoon just made Michelangelo's Nunchucks connect by a rope in post production. Same with the 1990 life action movie, they changed them to be connected by a rope and not a chain. The BBFC have always been a bit weird with what they will and wont allow on screen.
Also changed the name to Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles for the same reason.
@@lethkhar yep
It has been 30+ years since I’ve seen this movie. This video makes me want to see it again.
May you live as long as you want, but never want as long as you live.
Those Are All Great Movies! The Good Ol Days! Made My Dad Laugh So hard! 🤣🤣👍
They just can't make it today. True classic
Love that movie. My stomach hurt after watching it from laughing so hard. Great campy humor.
Loved watching this movie as a kid, absolute classic.
My brother and I liked this movie. We were 10 & 11. We thought Dabney Coleman’s character’s lisp was the funniest thing ever.
One of my favourite movies ever. “You got ballth ath big as choich bellth” cracked my friends up so much that it became one of our catch phrases!
"Blow it out your pants Cop" 🤣 Amill Muzz🤣🤣
I loved this movie! Lotta great quotables, and charismatic actors.
I remember the 2003-2004 revival series the theme tune was used in inspector gadget 1999
OMFG! I FORGOT ABOUT THE SONG! HOW DID I FORGET THE SONG!
The movie was released as “Schlappe Bullen beißen nicht” (weak cops don’t bite) - there is some lame titling here 🙄
I loved this movie, caught it in the theater. Loved how Aykroyd played the character straight.
I remember seeing this in the theater with my mother when I was 13.
Anything with Harry Morgan in is fine by me. 👍
Oh hell yeah! I loved this movie as a kid.
Saint George and the Dragon net.
Such a classic movie!
For instance with movie titles like:
“Escape from N.Y. = DIE KLAPPERSCHLANGE“ (-> which means: THE RATTLESNAKE)
„Dawn of the dead = ZOMBIES IM KAUFHAUS“ (-> which means: ZOMBIES IN THE MALL)
„Stripes = ICH GLAUB’ MICH KNUTSCHT EIN ELCH!“ (-> which means: I THINK I'M BEING SMOOCHED BY A MOOSE)
„Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind = VERGISS MEIN NICHT!“ (-> which means: DON'T FORGET MINE)
„The Pacifier = DER BABYNATOR“ (...THE BABYNATOR ?!)
„Wag the dog = Wenn der Schwanz mit dem Hund wedelt“ (-> which means: WHEN THE TAIL WAGS THE DOG)
„Quigley Down Under = QUIGLEY, DER AUSTRALIER“ (-> which means: QUIGLEY, THE AUSTRALIAN. although the protagonist is an American sniper!)
And of course
„Die Hard = Stirb Langsam“ (-> which means: DIE SLOWLY…!!!)
It´s such nonsense, you should make a whole standalone Video about this 🤣
Greetings from Berlin (which is the capitol of Germany)
See ya!
😅
It was one of my favorite movies of that time period. I haven't seen it in many years.
It's not great. 😂
When I first got access to a VHS recorder, this was the first film I recorded off the telly, so as you can guess it got a lot of views. I recently got it on BluRay and it’s still not stale, even if I know by heart where the jokes are coming.
I remember watching this on NBC back in the early 90's.
One of my favorite all time movies, I still say quotes from this movie that no one ever gets!
A police dragnet is an operation involving most of a police department forming a bolo for a wanted person or wanted persons
