Wonderful homage to Joyce from an amazingly talented actress and also another brilliant renaissance woman herself- Joyce & Maureen are both fantastic and this is such a beautiful sketch- full of the worries and hopes of a lady of the era yet kind at the same time. ❤❤❤
I'd forgotten how nuanced this version was. You can tell the businessman is distracting her from the brakes going on too fast by asking about her grandchildren. There is room for both versions. Great writing lends itself to new interpretations.
I love Maureen’s beautifully observed version of Joyce’s sketch- she really creates a lovely tribute to a huge talent of the past. This sketch always makes me tear up at the point she sees ‘them’ on the observation deck. I want to squeeze the characters hand and tell her ‘you will do it grand love’
@@markreilly52 She does it well but not as good as Joyce because it was her idea in the first place so it came from within her being. Maureen had to learn to be Joyce and that's not really possible. Still she brought Joyce to a whole new generation. Thank you Maureen.
A beautiful piece and brings back fond memories of seeing Maureen do it live in her West End one-woman tribute to Joyce Grenfell "RE: JOYCE!". Thank you for posting it.
@@jonbaum I was lucky enough to see it from a box in the theatre with three dear friends. At one point she looked up at us from the stage and made direct eye contact with each of us for about one second each up the line and then back down the line as she continued to speak perfectly in character. The mark of a real star.
@markreilly52 It’s a pity that in these days lacking in diversity and compassion that we feel the need for comparisons rather than just enjoying others’ talents for what they are. Two incredible actors in their chosen paths, both interpretations showing love and compassion in a judgemental and discriminatory world, just wanting to ‘do it right’.
Maureen Lipman is incredibly talented. However, to my mind she delivers this monologue far too slowly. Joyce Grenfell's original version conveyed the passenger's nervousness through her quick delivery.

I think this sketch is amazing and that Maureen does it better than Joyce.

Yes, I miss Maureen Lipman performing. She was a national treasure before we even knew we had national treasures.

No, Richard. Maureen is very good, but nobody can touch the genius and kindliness of Joyce.

I love Joyce Grenfell but I really think that Maureen does this better! Gentler, somehow and so moving towards the end.

Maureen Lipman greatly admires and respects Joyce Grenfell. Her show "Re: Joyce" was a love letter to her. She would never mock her.
