The Schiit Midgard gets such an easy recommendation and its not because of the new Halo tech, this amp flat out performs for the price. The New SVS speakers look really interesting too!

Thanks for the review! I bought the Midgard and Magnius DAC from my initial foray into this “hobby”. I’m using SennheiserHD660S2 and love what I’m hearing using a Tidal basic subscription thru a standard Dell laptop. As a noob I didn’t want to spend more than $1000 all in…and wanted to avoid Chinese products for the moment. Schiit customer service was awesome and I highly recommend this product. I did upgrade the cable on my headphones to try the 4 pin XLR, but not well trained enough to discern a difference….yet.

That’s a good setup, I have a feeling you will really enjoy it!

Now that tidal changed their subscription plans. Have you noticed a difference with the max quality format? At first I didn't notice much but once I changed the settings for tidal to use exclusive mode on my dac and turn on the passthrough mqa. WOW. The amount of detail that got better and the imaging got better too. Give it a try.

Marnin’ thanks for the review. Saturday morning, the house is quiet … the coffee is hot, and Matt has another top notch review. I like this ritual. 😊

I always look forward to your honest and straight forward reviews. I only own two Schiit products, a pair of Modi 3+ Dacs and I love them. I may upgrade some day but they sound great. It's great to have a well made all American product.

The Modi is a good DAC, the Schiit prices surprise me, generally priced really well for where it’s made.

Great review and news. Loved having you point out the button and input wiggle, and the honest Halo overview. Thanks also for the hd6xx review that all of us can relate to.

I went with the hd6xx here because while this amp has no issue driving headphones costing multiples more I see these extreme pairings that don’t really match up. The amp had a few wiggles here and there but end of the day it’s really pretty great!

Matt, great review as always. Your honest, detailed approach is why I watch.
I am a Fan of Schiit and eventually will put together a system with pile of their product. What is nice to know is that the company doesn't really try to sell you on Marketing Bull Schiit. They also let their customers know when they have changed something and what they might experience.
It doesn't hurt that they started making their products in C.C. TX.

Appreciate the watch! They let you know with their own humor too, the FAQ’s are pretty entertaining on their page.

    About "balanced" amplifiers.
The whole point of balanced interconnects is the ability to actively cancel noise at the input to a device. That is, you actually want to convert balanced to single ended as soon as possible inside your device.
A balanced cable uses two identical audio signals, one of which is inverted. These are commonly referred to as the Hot and Cold signals.
Noise and interference tend to occur on both audio wires identically. We call this Common Mode.
The magic happens at the input to a device... we re-invert the Cold signal putting it back into phase with the Hot. But we are also inverting one of the noise signals putting it out of phase with the other. Now the audio signals add... and the noise cancels.
To not do this... to run a "fully balanced" circuit you don't get the noise cancelling effect and from that point on the noise and interference is part of the audio signal, passed on to the next device... to eventually come out your speakers.
It might be a piece of Schiit ... but they got that much right.

I generally like what they do over there, I have had a handful of their products, even daily one for my work setup.

I've had a couple of their DACs and Headphone amps come through for clients. I like the product well enough, but it's not something I would buy for myself. My interests lie elsewhere, for the time being. (Still messing with hard to find and Class-D stuff)
BTW... that last line was an attempt at humour...

Thanks for your review. This as well as the Rekkr caught my attention. Currently using a Mojo2 as my DAC/preamp/amp driving Focal Elegia headphones.
That pairing sounds great, but would be curious to know whether adding this amp, or the Rekkr, into that stack would enhance the sound quality and soundstage?
By analogy, folks do DAC + preamp + amp pairings for many reasons for their main systems, and expanding enhancing sound quality and the soundstage generally accompanies the same.
What are your general thoughts about that concept for a headphone setup?
Is that a path you would recommend pursuing, or would you have another recommendation?
Of course the Elegia's are very efficient and I'm not in need of more power per se, just thinking about ways to enhance what i have, if possible.
This is for an office setup and so portability is key (i.e., no Feliks tube amp for me as a result 😊).
    Thank you!

    • @MattCoykendall1
      @MattCoykendall1  6 місяців тому

Mojo2 is a well respected device, I doubt you will achieve more fidelity from the Midgard, they likely sound very similar being the Midgard comes across very transparent. The midgard would certainly provide more power so the advantage there would be if you had a future plans of running something less efficient than the Elegias's.

With the shape of the cabinet on the SVS speakers I will be surprised if they offer the black ash veneer. The round overs and bevels will be expensive to produce with a real wood veneer. I hope I’m wrong though

Looks like another high value product from Schiit but pretty disappointing the pre-out isn't automatically defeated when you plug in headphones. Thats going to make it pretty frustrating to use if you have speakers at your desktop, especially if you are using passive speakers and a Schiit amp like Ghorn to power them since Schiit refuses to do common sense things like put power switches on the front of their products. I actually own several Schiit products despite their usability being compromised with hard to access power switches, and cryptic controls but I feel like they just holding themselves back with their design choices. All that aside do you have any other Schiit reviews coming? I looking to build a separates system with a Freya + pre and it would be cool if you go the Aegir or Vidar in for review before new amp they are working on comes out.
The SVS speakers look nice, the time aligned baffle gives them a much more interesting look and moving up scale a bit makes sense as their subwoofers are pretty high-end. Hopefully they perform as well as they look.

I dont have any other schiit reviews on the way at the moment, I am curious about the new speaker amp that appears to be coming though. The power switches... I feel ya.

@@MattCoykendall1 Thanks. I really don't know what Halo is. Í know what op amps are because of the Geshelli j2 Socketed. Have heard the term discreet, but don't know what it means when it pertains to audio gear.
