  • I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore, Toto, and things aren’t so wonderful down the yellow brick road. Her wide-eyed spunk and earnest performances made Judy Garland America’s sweetheart. But what was her experience like filming The Wizard of Oz? Just how much money did she have to her name by the time she died?

My wife and I have in our kitchen, a 6.5 foot tall tree with nothing but "The Wizard of Oz" ornaments / with lights on it. It stays up year round. Judy Garland will always be remembered in our house. What a talent, what a loss to the world. RIP Judy.

There is a special hell for Judy's mother and all the adults that mistreated her.
The Wizard of Oz holds very happy memories for me in my childhood. When I watch it now it is bittersweet knowing all the crap she was going through.
Long live Judy Garland, gone but never forgotten.

@@pbohearn When my mother saw her at the Palace Theater, she told us that Judy's voice was simply incredible! In those days there were no body mics, so when you performed on stage, whether singing or speaking, your voice had to reach the second balcony. Judy definitely had that projection! When she passed away, it was a terrible shock, obviously because it was such a tragedy, but also because they were exactly the same age. Judy's birthday was June10, 1922 & my mother's was June 11, 1922. They were both 47, at the time of Judy's death.

Those of us Garland followers know all the points in this video. But they left out contributions of people like Roger Edens who brought out the richness of her voice. Also they left out, as most do, the incredible sense of humor she had.. for example the wonderful interviews with Jack Paar. Also it is so sad the way people constantly hammer on about her "tragic' life. There was so much more than that. She constantly said how blessed she was in her children.
They have obviously used as a reference the personal tapes she made when she was planning to write her autobiography. They are a collection of rants against MGM and Sid Luft. Also, keep in mind that Liza Minnelli and Lorna Luft have both said she would stretch the truth when being interviewed.
In other words, Judy Garland was a complex mixture of different characteristics; just like all of us. We love her and will always consider her an international icon but also a human being. That's what I love about her most.

I was only 7 when Judy Garland died and now, at 60, I still remember the sadness hearing of her death on the news. At that time I had only seen her in The Wizard of Oz, but she has always been my favorite actress and my love for her only grew stronger as I got older and saw more of her movies. IMO, she was the greatest performer of the 20th century and it's a miracle she could deliver such magical performances in spite of her personal life. RIP Judy.

Lifelong Judy Garland fan. And yes, it began with The Wizard of Oz. And yes, we watched it every year. But, for me, it was all the movies she made with Mickey Rooney that stick with me. Always felt they should have been together. Looking at her life, and Mickey's with all the marriages that both of them went through. I honestly believe that had they found each other in that way she might still be with us today. A tremendous loss, what a tragedy. The only thing in the video that really came as a surprise is that I never knew she had a curved spine. That was surprising, never really noticed it in her performances. She was awesome, and we'll always have the films.

We were at the discretion and benevolence of the three major broadcast stations of the time. When it came on, you better watch because you wouldn't know when the next chance would come. Not to mention articles, documentaries, biographies and movies. Very few are dedicated to her talents and the happy times. The same goes to many other Hollywood figures. It’s just unfortunate. I guess that’s why gossip magazines are still popular. One example is her ex-husband Sid Luft. Almost every source that mentions him only explores the end of their relationship where things are usually more challenging, sometimes violent. Many of us go through it. But if you read his autobiography, you will learn how rich and wonderful their relationship was for a very long time. How much he loved her. That’s just an example. They do the same to Liza. They go on and on about her tragic life. Ugh. She’s living a full life and having a great time too, but that’s not interesting to many. :( We all have good and bad moments. All of us. Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney were the absolute best Hollywood ever produced. Many people think that Mickey Rooney is the finest actor ever in Hollywood, and Judy Garland is the best singer who can also keep up with the best with her dancing. It took Mickey Rooney a long time to find true love, but I've never read that he was abused nearly as much as Judy. Watch the movie "Girl Crazy" and look for the number "Embraceable You".--and look at any part of "Strike up the Band", directed by Busby Berkeley. Incredible.

Listen to me carefully Judy Garland was Always the first choice for the part of Dorothy. MGM bought it to make her a star. The owner of MGM Lowe's Inc. based out of New York City wanted a bigger box office star to be Dorothy. Shirley Temple not only couldn't sing the songs like Judy Garland could, because those songs were written with Judy in mind. Yes, it's true, Shirley was considered for the role, but it was only a two or three day consideration. Fox wouldn't loan Shirley out and that's why she wasn't Dorothy. Shirley was not MGM's first choice for Dorothy.

I will always remember the one episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race where one of the men who volunteered to be a part of the makeover challenge said that he was with Judy the night she had died and he was the one that gave her the pills that killed her. It’s a really sad moment because you can tell that guilt had followed him for decades. It was nice of Jinkx Monsoon to give a shoutout to him on the all winners season of All Stars as Judy on the Snatch Game saying it wasn’t his fault.

She was such an incredible talent, and a unique beauty, but she always doubted it. I wish she had known and believed how much we all love her. She always seemed to be needing more love than was available to her.
Despite the hard life she had, she didn't dwell on it. She knew she was living an extraordinary life. I'm so grateful she did.
The "Wizard of Oz" is an iconic film, but if you love Judy, you have to see:
    "Introducing Lily Mars"
    "The Clock"
    "Meet me in St Louis"
    "The Harvey Girls"
    "In the Good Old Summertime"
    "Summer Stock"
    "A Star is Born"

Every year around Christmas time The Wizard of Oz would come on television. My sister and I were always so excited to watch it. It's one of those movies that has you laughing, crying and edge of your seat scared when the wicked witch of the west appears. I remember seeing Glenda the good witch and thinking she was more like a fairy princess.
My youngest daughter loved the movie and we watched our copy over and over. Rachael had to dress up like every character on screen during the movie. Her personal rendition of the characters she called O-E-O men still brings a smile to my face when I'm reminded. Her little girl now loves it equally without the continuous costume changes ❤
Judy I know you're enjoying yourself Somewhere Over the Rainbow 🌈🌈🌈 Thanks for for this treasure ❤❤❤

@Jeff-fu8is I'm pretty sure God, Jesus & the Holy Ghost gave her a pass into Heaven. Addiction is a serious illness that's almost impossible to overcome without lots of help from others, and she kept hoping she would find her own "Perfect Man", like in a movie - which means her needs for love, protection, understanding & real medical help were never met, by anyone! Based on all that, I think she got a free pass.

I can't believe she endured so much agony and mistreatment from her supposed family and working peers! I don't know why people are so cruel and evil to one another! No one deserves the life she had, it's too in humane and hideous! I hope she is in a better place where all hopes and wishes come true! Hopefully when we pass on, we will have what we always wanted! Goodbye!

Most of the greats die young & to see Judy at 11:19 in the B&W photo, hard to believe she is only 47. She looks more like in her 70's & those pills, cigarettes & long working schedules took a toll on her body & looks. Such a wonderful talent gone too soon. Considering her life I found it surprising she was able to have 3 children. Forever Dorothy, can't believe she'd be 101 in 2023.

After having Lizza, Vincent ignored her while on the set of The Pirate, so Gene Kelly would take turns calling in to help cover Judy when she needed a mental health day. And years later, Gene insisted she needed to play the female lead for Summerstock, and would not take “No” as the answer from the studio heads.
Even though everyone knows her from The Wizard of Oz, everyone should really go through the rest of her filmography. My personal favourite is Meet Me In St Louis, and The Pirate is my favourite of the Judy/Gene films.

The pictures of her last days, she was anorexic. She never got over the studios and her mom saying she was chunky as a 12 year old and forcing her on diet pills, cigs etc to lose weight. She never had any self esteem thanks to them. She had moved to England to perform to try and make money, have a smidgeon of a career as the usa threatened to jail her for tax evasion. Which her management and parents had done. Poor Judy never stood a chance❤😢
