Now i'm imagining someone ballet dancing pirouetting spin kicks and graceful leaps, break-dancing + free style gymnastics saltos and spins with brazilian capoeira martial art that includes elements of dance...
@monlenz "There are things you can't fight, acts of the Gods. You see a demon coming have to get out of the way. But when there's a War Dancer, suddenly, you can fight the demon. You can win." I'm imaging a War Dancer either using its club as a lever to topple a spider tank, which would be the smartest idea... but since they're in a neverending play, I believe they're like real gladiators. Even in the battlefield, against strong opponents, they try to entertain the rest of the Verusian soldiers by putting up a good fight, which just shows the vanity of Verus, which I believe could be their main downfall. But even then, bringing hope and excitement is an effect strategy for a war. Or maybe I'm just wrong... maybe they take the strong opponents down quickly and elegantly... or maybe they do both, every different section of the High Churches giving a different 'role' and 'script' to the dancers. So that each dancer fights differently based on even their skill and their own physical stats, as to not bore the audience they have. But this begs a question... how many 'Dancers' would it take in order to take down a 'King'? Since you have shown us a 'Bishop'. But take your time, we know you'll eventually show one to us. We've seen a lot of what Ram brings in the battlefield, but I'm sure Verus has many other monsters of their own in this ever growing conflict. Great video as always.
There's something so disgustingly beautiful about how the dehumanization of the pillar men is depicted in the narration. As it goes on, it's so easy to get lost in how immersive the descriptions are, to the point where I completely forgot near the end that we were talking about *humans* here and not wild, untamable beasts captured in the wilderness. How they're property for the high churches, the propaganda being pushed for their existence and the inhumane drugging, even other soldiers seeing them as "things". It's incredible writing and does its job well with depicting the history, as well as introducing the natural progression for how the war dancers came to be
Yeah, it's a lot of fun and super eerie to think about when it's narrated and thought out like this. Crazy how much impact it has and how it just works compared to many, many other "dehumanised war machine that once was human" concepts that don't make you feel anything
With those giant magic muscles they gotta have an attack where they can overflex and cause an explosion, bonus points if the attack has the word hernia twisted in it
yea i do belive they would be strong enough to voluntarily tear their own muscles not sure if it would be worth it though. also i saw your latest video, really cool stuff you added honestly couldn't be more exited to eventually play it. even though i know i would be terrible at it.
@@monlenzMaybe as an absolute last-resort self destruct type thing? They do the flex the explode. Idk, I'm just thinking of goofy ways to make it work lol

this is honestly one of my new favorite parts of the entire lore. I love the image of these wild giants fearlessly rushing over the trenches driven by years of painful body modification and drug use that's slowly replaced the people they once were with aggressive supersoldiers. the sheer contrast in them being simultaneously bloodthirsty and aggressive yet disciplined and purposeful, heavy and clumsy beasts yet elegant dancers, ugly and deformed yet beautifully clothed, admired by the population yet shunned by the individual, the list goes on. it's such an interesting design I can't wait to see more!

That line about what the god think of what we've done to their creations reminds me of the line "Do you think God stays in heaven because he fears what he has created" from Spy Kids
I love this. The whole lore of the Church stating "There are no failed Pillar Men", shipping the fallen off to war under false pretenses, creating plays and narratives to manipulate the masses, creating War Dancers who believe they're performing for the Gods. It's so dark and cool and tragic. I genuinely feel awful for the fallen Pillar Men and mislead War Dancers Also, I love that these Pillar Men, icons and revered figures of the Verusian faith, have been repurposed for use in war. The same ceremonial and ritual practises of dance and strength, but used for a different aim. It reminds me of the Divine Beast Dancing Lion boss from Elden Ring's DLC, a comparison I make with the highest respect
The flashing changes in lighting while you explored the color options and different layers really felt like an awful memory of battle, witnessing "that thing, the one they sent with us to clean up this mess"
My favourite part of Rust and Trenches is how it uses established concepts and then spins them around by explaining different uses for it, after all, this video is really just a 'What happens if a Pillar Man falls', and explores the history behind this concept and how it evolved. And even when it introduces new concepts like the Slugshell or the 'Bishop' spider tank, it doesn't leave them as shallow standalone additions but instead fleshes them out and entertwines them with the world, and you end up wanting to see them in other scenarios given how interesting the concept is. ...I just realized that if I keep commenting I might end up making a giant wall of text, so, best of luck to your projects! A thing I really want to see in this world is honestly transports and logistics. Do the spider tanks just walk on their own to the battlefield? (That must be a long trip). And what if they empty their fuel? Do they just retreat? Do mages repair them? And as much as the over-engineering part of me wants to say the limb connections look a bit frail, which makes me prone to ask if there's any fortifying processes or if enemies just try to shoot them in that place (unlikely with the speed they probably go at), I also understand rule of cool is an important factor, and I can safely say, everything in here is cool. ...I ended up making a giant wall of text regardless. Worth it.

This reminds me of a folktale where the Thai built temples that looked like huge pillars, and each one required multiple sacrifices to earn the spirit's favor and have them protect the people. This made me wonder if we have seen an illustration of these pillars and how their appearance could affect the architecture of Verus. Your illustrations and worldbuilding are lovely, I wonder where you were taught to draw and color so beautifully.
i dont think youve done it on purpose, but i absolutely adore the idea that the pillars hold up the heavens as it reminds me so deeply of gravity rush - which takes place pretty much on a seemingly endless pillar that goes far far up into the sky and far far down towards a ground that has yet to be seen. I just love it so much. The idea that further up on the pillars is actually this whimsical little adventure and civilization, while at the base is this horrific, dark, twisted war and people. Anyways, love the final design and the way you always show the reference images and the processes youve undergone to reach it. Cant wait for the next video!
I like to imagine that their massive muscular figures end up making it harder to climb the pillars given their immense bulk/weight, resulting in an ironic twist of actions taken to reach the heavens physically hindering the approach.
Love the design and the concept. They also remind me of Tibetan demons. You could make them have wild unblinking eyes as a side effect of the mutations as well as their skin turning blue or blood red.
Don’t know if there is any meaningful inspiration but this fella reminds me of kukeri, people who jump and dance around in large costumes made from animal fur, bells around the waist and horned, toothed or animal-like masks to scare away evil spirits
that was so so so cool. the idea of them making pillar men for battle and battle only halfway through sent chills up my spine. paints a very vivid picture of verus, I'm exited now that I'm starting to understand both verus and ram.

AWESOME, MAGNIFIQUE!!! I was intrigued in hearing it all while you slowly hep my senses with the drawing and reference, I got cut short by the end because I was sure it was a documentary of some old lost society! These pillar man represent a lot and its captivating how much lore you put into this
I'm actually surprised that no one pointed that out yet, but the extreme hypertrophy that you see in bodybuilders and strength athletes is an adaption to short intervals of extreme mechanical tension, whereas climbing falls into the category of strength endurance (less tension over longer intervals). That's why professional climbers aren't as scrawny as marathon runners, but they're also not nearly as muscular as bodybuilders. The amount of strength that comes with extreme hypertrophy isn't useful in climbing and all of the additional weight makes it pretty much impossible to climb long distances. The physiological adaptions that would be necessary to enable humans to climb extreme distances would mostly be metabolic adaptions. Having a short conversation with a chat bot here and there to check concepts like this one for logical fallacies might be helpful in the future. I still love the design and the lore though :)
Good point, maybe a good way to keep it making sense would be the idea that physical magic allows for much much more strenght development, so the point were more muscle becomes inneficient to move ones bodyweight is moved higher, the ideal climber might not be like a bodybuilder, but the ideal physical magic enhanced climer does. Or hell, maybe thats just propaganda, true pillar men do look like climbers, and these war dancers are not even designed to climb anymore, from the start, they are meant for pure strenght to fight. Then what you just described would go from a lack of realism to a clever detail showing the true going ons of the story. Thats kinda cool imo
@@jackbucher2049 What's the alternative? Spending the next 50 years studying every science known to mankind, just to make sure that your worldbuilding is absolutely bullet proof? Asking random strangers on the internet is very likely to result in inaccurate information, reaching out to experts is highly unlikely to result in anything and reading up on a topic you know nothing about is extremely time consuming and inconvenient and also begs the risk of fundamentally misunderstanding something due to a lack of basic knowledge. Asking a chat bot strikes the perfect balance between conveniece, efficiency and accuracy of information if you ask me.
@@aguspuig6615 Yeah, I really like the propaganda angle. It ties in perfectly with the rest of the narrative and makes absolute sense. That would be a very cool piece of lore.
Now we need answers. Verus war dancers VS Ram tank. Who would win ? I don't think the tanks have a very good turn radius considering they lack treads, so if a war dancer gets to a tank's side they could probably topple it down.
from what he says in the ram tank's video, the tanks are quick so I doubt a dancer would be able to reach it. What I think the purpose of the dancer is on the battlefield is an anti-infantry role, because other than the fact they would scare the hell out of a poor little soldier they could probably also tank a few gun shot wounds
definitely depends on who sees who first, though a fight between them would be a spectacle to behold. i was actually joking about this scenario with a friend and we laughed at the idea of the war dancer in their drugged haze would climb onto the tank and start elbowing the top hatch like a muay thai fighter. if i was in the tank id piss myself.
@@monlenz ahahaha, you're killing it with this one, man. Amazing work, I'm surprised of such cool ideas have an embodiment in your video's. @@monlenz Maybe the Dancer beats the tank because it can outrun its turn radius, but the tank is ofc resistant to bullets to a way greater extent. So infantry can shoot down war dancer, war dancer can flank and bonk tank to death, tank can srhug off shots and kill infantry with ease.
Such an awesome video! I find really interesting how your setting shows how the different nations could perform terrible actions in order to continue surviving!

That pose is just so good here, it speaks "Done with the insects, now march foward". And I love the silhouette. You are inspiring me to create stories as well
Question: do pillar men/war dancer speak? What would they say to the people before beginning their climb or their comrade before the coming battle? Maybe they can't speak because of the church's secrets?
what i imagined is that they used to speak, actually very well and would have to be knowledgeable in many fields the whole "peak of humanity" thing but now adays i don't think they would be able to speak much of anything not that they are dumb but i think the procedures done to them and the drugs they inject to give them as much climbing potential as possible makes it hard and yes the church would also tell them to shut it.
@monlenz Maybe they have taken vows of silence - like monks. These guys do seem a lot like a sort of warrior monks. This could be forced upon them from the church
@@monlenz Suggestion; as Pillar-men and War-Dancer are trained and begin to undergo their enhancements they learn to only communicate in overly complex and stylized sign language that incorporates dance and/or the rythm from a small bongo drum and/or highly complex calligraphy writing... ps: fun note, imagine an army captain trying to talk tactics and looking confused as he flicks through an "interpretative translation guide book" -for the War-Dancer secret "language"...
Your work is truly amazing and really inspiring. Also I love this design so much. It really reminds me of the Devine beast dancing lion (my favorite boss from Elden ring). The Devine beast is so beautifully elegant and brutal like these war pillar man. I just can’t get enough of Devine things being turned into instruments of war.
I love how you create more "generic" concepts for heroic figures that feel somewhat familiar, much like real life propaganda works by giving people something to latch onto that they can relate to, then gradually warp those figures into something almost unrecognizable from the original, once again what happens in real life. The concept of the pillar men being sort of cult/traditional heroes, then being turned into tools of war by the state is something out of this world, but it feels sadly close to real life.
I wonder if the whole concept of the Pillarmen is having a negative effect on the avarage Verusian. For a society that seemingly really values self image and quality, the idea that, if you for some reason excell too much you might just become the property of the high church and be turned into whats meant to be a saintly figure, but is almost seen as an inhuman ''thing'' by many, might be causing some apathy on the avarage person, a conformism and a desire to blend in and not excell too much. This remind me of military stories from my grandpa, were he explained that all but he dumbest guy in a squad would purposefully miss during shooting training, because the best shot had to carry a machinegun arround instead of a rifle, and how most soldiers shot to miss because they didnt want to kill, but nor could they be seen iddle and not firing.
i felt this reverberates with how the Perfumers in Elden Ring were created, from noble apothecary perfumers, to war-crazy depraved perfumers to the abominable omenkillers truly amazing artwork and lore chief

@@monlenz oh with their head. while chanting some hym
@@monlenz ahahaha, you're killing it with this one, man. Amazing work, I'm surprised of such cool ideas have an embodiment in your video's. Definitely will subscribe and keep my eyes wide open for your next post's, I've seen your work's in the past, but didn't know who was author. Happy to actually find such saturated with imagination channel's, as yours; it's inspiring me. Anyway, thank you for your work once again!
I've been waiting for this one!!! So stoked, truly an inspiration in storytelling and character design
this was perfect so... The story came together in such a freaking satisfying way that leaves you wanting more
Harlequins from 40k with extra large muscles and roid rage.
Really love the lore and mental image you sketch of these huge beings dancing in war wich has a bit of contrast with eachother , really cool!
This gives me so much Berserk Kushan vibes. Amazing video, i'm always amazed by your illustrations.
Hi I am from Thailand 🇹🇭 🇹🇭 🇹🇭 thank you for use our culture as base to create this amazing art concept ❤
Such an awesome video! I find really interesting how your setting shows how the different nations could perform terrible actions in order to continue surviving!
I love everything about that lore. Stories influencing reality. Pettiness of the churches.
This is a genuinly great concept.
From a design aspect I love that these guys would be right at home in something like Dark Souls or Elden Ring.
It's impressive how much effort you put into each design
I am already a Verus enthusiast. Praised be the pillar man, praised be those who chose to fight, praised be the high church, may they all reach the gods
Man this is by far the most interesting lore thing you ever posted here. Now THAT's a unique story that makes me understand and believe in your world. Keep it up man
I love all the details on the mask and the use of color to create a sense of elegance that contrasts well with their usage as soldiers. Great work
Omg i love this. You've really come far, especially with your editing, and narration.
I can’t wait for all the “which side are you on” memes…blue for Veruse, Red for Ram
This isnt a recipe for cheesecake
It can be with enough effort.
This is soooo good!! Such chilling descriptions!! Such compelling tales.. i love your work so much man
This is the coolest idea you've come up with so far imo. I love it
Duuude I love your stuff so much!! It’s a massive inspiration for me. Keep at it!
That pose is just so good here, it speaks "Done with the insects, now march foward". And I love the silhouette. You are inspiring me to create stories as well
Keep up the awesome work, it's refreshing to see such unique world building
One of your best videos / artworks yet!
Really love the mini kind of environment added - awesome as always !
Cool stuff. I love how in almost every worldbuilding there are super soldiers with focus on ceremonial/ moral boost purpose.
This is brilliant. The lore is excellent and the design/art is top-notch. Great job.
Great Video as always! I would enjoy a compilation of all lore videos in order when you are finished (or if more content has been dropped)
The narration gave me chills
Great video! I really appreciated the in depth history of the war dancers.
@@gawkthimm6030 ... That sounds exactly like the kind of pretentious window dressing Verusian church would do, M8. >)X^D
I want to draw like you sooo hard man ❤
You’re such an amazing inspiration, seriously, amazing.
Love the work, my guy, always getting better ever since the first mage video, keep it up!
Looks incredible, I love these art and lore drops, they are so interesting
Your work is truly amazing and really inspiring. Also I love this design so much. It really reminds me of the Devine beast dancing lion (my favorite boss from Elden ring). The Devine beast is so beautifully elegant and brutal like these war pillar man. I just can’t get enough of Devine things being turned into instruments of war.
I found ur channel last year and i'm amazed how good at world building you are. I envy you lol
Dude I cannot handle you uploading so often, this is amazing
Hope you live a long life brother. This shit's to good to lose
This remind me of military stories from my grandpa, were he explained that all but he dumbest guy in a squad would purposefully miss during shooting training, because the best shot had to carry a machinegun arround instead of a rifle, and how most soldiers shot to miss because they didnt want to kill, but nor could they be seen iddle and not firing.
one of the best videos youve made, love it
amazing stuff man---the drawing---the writing---love it
love the world your building can wait to see what you come up with next
Technology vs Biology is such a classic theme I love it. The technological marvels of Ram clash with the body warping magics of Verus.
This is a really cool project. I love your magic system!
absolutely beautiful lore, all of it feels complete and makes perfect sense in my brain, making it seem believable and real. Best feature of fantasy!
Writer, Artist, Dark academic. Truly an inspiration for my own interests.
"If we truly reach the havens one day, what will the gods think of what we've done to their creations?" goes hard
Absolutely captivating story telling, it's like something straight out of Elden ring.
I need a whole document to read the lore, so I can connect all these cool creations of yours to the overall world lore.
no such thing exists, best way is genuinly to watch his old streams where he brainstorms with his viewers.
i felt this reverberates with how the Perfumers in Elden Ring were created, from noble apothecary perfumers, to war-crazy depraved perfumers to the abominable omenkillers
truly amazing artwork and lore chief
