    I have a feeling that this decadent uniform is something the soldiers would be wearing at the beginning of the war when resources and moral is at its highest. Then years into the war when things become more cynical and jaded, the kitschiness would slowly fade away and become more minimalist and stripped down.

    Its something I consider heavily in my work as well, although I would have probably called it historicity and instead of seeking a balance I try to lean heavily on it.

    If you're looking for ammo pouches, you could look into the powder slings 17th century spanish arqebusiers wore. A single sash/belt strapped across the chest with multiple pre-measured cylinders of black powder hanging from strings of linen or cord (could be fancy silk for Verus ;) ). It could help make the silhouette of the soldier a bit smaller and dial back the timeframe into a period of warfare under represented in pop culture. Anyways, I'd love to wear that soldiers pants. Lovin it.

    Early Modern fantasy is sooo underrated. It feels like everyone wants to be either medieval or industrial even though there’s a whole time period of knights with flintlocks between 1450-1750.
    It’s genuinely a massive time period that is way better understood than the dark ages. The problem is that basically all the cool shit was happening away from Northwest Europe. Seriously massive evil empires Mughals, Ottomans, Spain, Portugal, Russia, Aztecs all dominated here.

  • @Wickertop
    @Wickertop 2 місяці тому +70

    A quick note that may help your design process in regards to the 'dotted' tunics - historically, said pattern is called puff-and-slash, and originates from a desire to showcase both the outer layer and the under layer - stitched slit holes were added to clothing, the slashes, through which the underlying fabric would be pulled through, the puffs. It was common among the wealthy or ostentatious - not only is your outerwear luxuriously-brocaded and stitched, your innerwear is also fine dyed silks and pristine virgin fabrics. The most standout example from the real world in a militarized context are the famous German Landsknechte mercenaries from the 15th to 17th centuries, who wore their value as skilled mercenaries literally on their sleeves in the form of bright, bold fabrics with plenty of puff-and-slashed elements, bought with the coin their services demanded.
    For a Verusian foot soldier, it is entirely likely said puff-and-slash elements may be quite subdued, yet still present - the design you put forth reminds me of some of the holdover elements of French uniform design during WW1 - the 'pantalon rouge' that was standard across the French army at the start of the war, which was eventually phased out as it became apparent that bright red pants and caps did little but make French soldiers easier to spot along the trenches. Perhaps the puff-and-slashed coat and slopped red trousers could be a holdout of Verusian notions of nobilitas - a lingering remnant from a prouder time that the common soldier now must pay for with their lives, when a less ostentatious uniform might've helped them survive another day. I can see captains and commanders still clinging to parade forms of this design line - more puff-and-slash, more poofy trousers, more heavy, bulky armor and a plumed helmet that cannot stop a well-placed bullet.
    There's a lot working for this design, and a lot of visual language being used - definitely a solid job, keep it up ♥

    Monstergarden, your work here has inspired me greatly.
    Not in the actual lore or design of your setting, but rather in your process and creation evolution.
    I also realize that projects with worldbuilding are rather incomplete without images to help flesh them out, similar to how it is hard to draw without having concrete ideas or concepts to draw upon.
    Thank you so much for this!

    I know you probably already have something in mind for it, but I love the detail of the extra armour on the right shoulder being a cooking utensil of some kind hanging on playing double duty as portable cook wear and armour, it mainly resembles a wok or thin pan, perhaps Versusians pride themselves on rich fried foods or the food in the trenches needs to be made quickly with little to no flair.

    Thank you for this video (or all videos, honestly). Thank you for being so transparent.
    Since discovering your art, I´ve tried to add more details to my worldbuilding, and watching your streams has been a huge inspiration. It´s always so fascinating to see how you pick many aspects from reality and your imagination and make something totally unique, fitting for your project.
    Personally, I´ve never been interested in clothing, and I´m bad at drawing it. Yet, watching you design your cultures and their clothing with so much attention to detail and meaning, including those super cool patterns, changed my view. I wanted to stop feeling like a copycat skimming over parts of worldbuilding and finally create clothing fitting the context of my story. I even plan on using my graphic tablet again and doing some more art.
    Thank you for taking us on your journey and giving people a place to work on their projects (the discord server is brimming with cool ideas).
    Just thank you, and congratulations on recording this video.
    EDIT: Oh, and thank you for reminding me that (great) things take time. Sometimes I feel irritated when I can´t come up with THE solution or idea after days or weeks of thinking. Seeing you go through multiple stages of dissatisfaction to get closer to your vision was really helpful and motivating.

    I really like the final version best, it really helps to see the process of breaking yourself until you step away and come back with a fresh perspective and direction.
    Naming things, if it helps:
    The military uniform shoulder straps that button down on the jackets are called either Shoulder Straps or Epaulette Straps, the Epaulette being the insignia piece that goes around them.
    The over the boot socky things that were part of the US marine Uniforms are called Puttee, or Winingas. The name comes from Indian and they started as just leg wraps and comes from the Hindi word for Bandage. Winingas is an older word derived from Norse Vindingr or winding. Most of them were armored with leather or metal plates like a shine guard to protect from snakes or barbed wire during British use and into WW2.

It feels like your world is warm but miserable. You can get chocolate there but youll die of diaria at the rip old age of 23. People laugh around campfires some places and others scream as they die in the cold mud of the trenches. Very cool vibes

  • @Orendiz
    @Orendiz Місяць тому +1

    I'm sure someone suggested that before by now. But consider looking at references of fashion for soldiers in the 16th-17th century Renaissance era. Puffy sleeves and puffy legs were very prevalent there especially for Italian and roman/German soldiers and mercenaries like Landsknecht.
    A lot of ridiculous colorful and over the top clothing back then that is used both in real life and fantasy depictions of soldiers originates from that time period. A common thing at the time to display how rich you are especially in the 17th century, was to wear very expensive but highly impractical and silly looking clothes like for example a neck ruffle. It served no purpose other than to showcase your wealth because it was very expensive to make.
    So a lot of what can be considered fantasy can actually be historical (just not time period apropriate haha)

    Don't know if someone said already but the shoulder loop things at @12:05 are called epaulettes. They keep the straps of a backpack in place when marching.
    Each and every one of your videos is an absolute pleasure to watch, thank you for your content!

    The Soldier is some kind of a mix with the w´Wehrmacht Color combined with puffy pants from 1600 Spain Army and a UK WW2 Helmet and Boots and Kneerabs out of WW1.

    I always go logistical instead of cultural when designing fantasy stuff. So, for instance, does this world have cotton (Or another plant that can produce cloth at scale- this is *extremely* important for fashion) If so, where is this cotton grown- by another country, or in slave plantations? How are these uniforms manufactured at scale? What sort of government could effectively administrate that? Is the whole process ran by the government, or outsourced to tradesmen/ companies.
    When you read about historical empires and nations, it's often these aspects that reveal the most about their society. That Roman armor was manufactured in pseudo factories and artisans, that they soldiers would stamp their names into their helmets- and often use second, third, or even fourth hand, helmets. Contrast that with medieval Europe, where a soldier would be lucky to be given a weapon, and was not paid for their work as a professional soldier, but as a raised hand.

      he has answered a lot of lore questions in the live-streams where he does a lot of collaborative brainstorming and designs speculation with his viewers, I think he said something along the lines of; anything that early modern period Europe had access to, except a direct horse equivalent, exists in some form in this universe. Either through the normal realistic method produced as in real life, or an analouge can be made out of resources harvested from some monstrous magical creature, or hand crafted by a Mage.
      Also that both the Empires mentioned; Rum and Verus are rather large empires with huge populations employed in manufacturing to feed the many years running war effort.

    Love to see the design process and considerations. You beautifully demonstrate how important the worldbuilding is for every little detail. How the characters base their actions, outfits and way of life and around their beliefs. Amazing stuff. Also love the lore at the end.
