It was very strange to watch the show knowing Sondheim is no longer in the world, when only last week, Sondheim was two seats behind me watching his show. At the end of The Ladies Who Lunch, Patti teared up and lifted her glass to the heavens to toast him. The cast did an amazing job - their performances tonight were inspired. An emotional night all around.
You can see how heartbroken they all are. We have lost our musical Shakespeare. But what a legacy.
The West Side Story remake comes out into theaters on my 16th birthday, I wish I could’ve thanked him for the best birthday present. I will always love him.
They’re going to dedicate it to him I’m sure

It's not a remake..... It's a new adaptation with an entirely new book and screenplay. There's a huge difference.
May his memory be a blessing. I know I would not have been able to hold it together had i been in the audience (or on stage / behind the curtain!) that night. I’m honestly still in denial but I know the heavy grief will hit soon. He lived 91 years, but I thought for sure he’d live to see his 100s. I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say his work touched millions, possibly billions, of people. It hurts so much that he’s gone but I love the unity of the theatre community…we’ve all come together in mourning. “No one leaves for good.”
I know. But he truly "lived" to the end. Was working on a musical with collaborators. He gave a 90 minute interview in the Times just this last Sunday and then went to see double shows at the theater earlier this week. A true loss, but he left us so much.

@@TimeIdle Ohhhh how I wish SS had been able (if he wanted to that is) to write/compose the score for The Visit. If you've ever read the actual Durrenmatt play and not the various adaptations, I think he would have have had a blockbuster on his hands.
They are true pros. The show went on, and they smiled through the tears. RIP Mr. Sondheim.

I saw Waitress the night it happened and they also gave a little curtain call speech. I looked around the theatre and everyone was hugging each other sobbing, just goes to show how powerful Sondheim was with everything he did.
My heart is broken. You will live on wherever there is beauty, Mr. Sondheim.
I fell in love with Stephen Sondheim on a Friday night in 1984. I was lazing on the couch and put on PBS. Great Performances was broadcasting "Sweeney Todd" . I was half asleep but woke up saying to myself "what IS that ? It was hilarious, haunting and one of the most beautiful pieces of music I had ever heard. My world changed that day. Good night Maestro. Rest Well. It was better with you in this world but God called you home. Make music for the angels for eternity. May heaven be one grand theater.
It’s gonna be hard for me to see this show when I come next month. Sondheim was a major inspiration to me and many others. Theatre won’t be the same without him.
Truly, he left a huge mark. He is always with us! ❤️
I met my husband in 1986 in the La Mar Theatre in Amsterdam, I played Martha in Company, he was the sound engineer. We've been married for 30 years now. Sondheim will always be in our head. Our song is: Not a day goes by!

The cast of Hadestown dedicated the song “We Raise Our Cups” and drank to Stephen at Saturday nights performance, it was a shocking way to find out, but it was done eloquently, RIP Stephen.

I performed in a college version of COMPANY circa 2003 in Western Sydney, Australia. Such an absolute thrill to have been a part of Mr Sondheim's legacy even in the southern hemisphere. I recall our very first rehearsal and reading the incomprehensible score-then suddenly when it all came together and I was besotted, bewildered and bemused but mainly completely captivated by the complexities that seamlessly melded in such mind blowing form!
Yes Mr Stephen Sondheim has touched many souls even as far as Australia and this young adult who was searching to be understood artistically. May God bless you Mr Sondheim. R.i.p.
Your legacy will live on through every single composition, every single note, every single performer that has the honour of performing your stunning pieces. Thank you eternally.
sondheim changed my life, truly. he was a real genius in every way. i am so devastated, i cannot put it into words. i wish i could thank him. may his memory be a blessing
I saw Company almost exactly a week before Sondheim’s death. I think that made it hit harder for me when I found out, but I’m also glad that I got to see his work while he was still in the world. He lives on through his music and always will
He might have been there that night. He saw it a few nights before he passed.

@@beaellie9766 if you look at the video on this channel from Company’s return, I put in a brief clip of him waving to the audience before the show. He sat two seats diagonally behind me. I was able to look over my shoulder a few times (I limited myself) to see how he enjoyed the show, which he very much did. It felt surreal to be back watching the show the very next week knowing he had just passed. Still, it was comforting to be with a whole audience full of people who also felt that loss.
When genius lives among us and has such an impact on our hearts and souls as an artist in the entertainment world, it is more of a personal loss because of that impact. Put being a musician, a performer, and entertainer yourself into the mix just adds to that feeling of loss. Thank God the inspired contributions of Sondheim and others we love will always live as new listeners and new audiences discover them.
Still so so sad. For theatre people we will always remember where we were when we heard the news.
I was watching Freestyle Love Supreme when the news came out. I ended up visiting outside the theatre just as the show ended and prayed. Sondheim is forever my inspiration as I continue to write my own plays and musicals

Brilliant, genius---there aren't enough superlatives to describe Mr . Sondheim. What a footprint he's left!

Aww, tbh, this is kind of sad! The original conductor was amazing! I'm sad I never got to see the show but I'll check the age restriction to see if this musical is appropriate for me or not because I'm only 12!

I was there Saturday night and found out Sondheim died just a couple minutes before the show started and was in my seat (friend texted me). Where you the one recording it on a cellphone in the aisle? If so you were right beside my seat LOL. Love the tribute they did right before the show started.

This show was great but the lead KL was not very strong in my opinion. I thank Stephen Sondheim for his brilliance. This show as definitely a different version. I can appreciate both.

Has Broadway forgotten to honour one of their Greats by 'dimming the lights' in Tribute? Maybe, too many of us in the older generations have gone, and the young ones in charge today have no idea. #DimTheLights #Broadway #SondheimRIP
They didn’t forget. Dimming the lights is done on a coordinated basis so all theaters go dark at the same time. This will happen in the near future. There was a pre-show tribute here (and likely at most shows).
Plus curtain calls are a copyrighted part of the show (the curtain is 100% part of the framing of the play) and therefore illegal to video/copy. Just imagine if Beowulf Boritt were paid EVERY TIME some high school or community theater copied his Spelling Bee staging illegally (it happens ALL THE TIME) - he'd be living high on the hog!!!!! It's as though cell phones are now for recording confrontations and not for calling 911, or for taping Broadway shows and Boston Pops concerts illegally, rather than calling your friends later and sharing your amazing experience with them in your own words. That's why I am glad people like Yay Show Vids and others get exclusive rights ahead of time in writing for every show or curtain call that they film, so that they can be the good example and (dare I say - "set the stage") for all the other illegal videographers to follow. But yes, there will be a dimming, once they can coordinate a date.
I think it's planned for this coming week.
