I have had the honor of meeting Mr. Sondheim back in 1985 when he allowed me to come to his house for 3 days to work on my thesis paper about him for college. I can say that this man is the real deal. *ALL* heart. Genuinely a most gracious host. All that while he was busy at the time working on Into the Woods. The most charming thing was that he had his doorbell set up to chime the opening measures of the Into the Woods song. Anyway, he didn't have to be nice to me at all. I needed to interview him, but he simply didn't have the time, so I left the questions at his house by mistake. Imagine my delighted surprise when about a month later he sent me a cassette tape responding to all my questions!!! That's what I mean by the real deal. He will always be an icon to me, and to this very day I still keep in communication with him by letter. He always responds and has sent me numerous gifts throughout the years. I love and adore this man. I hope to get the opportunity to see him again soon.

I do not understand why we have these uncharitable comments. This video is almost 8 years old and all of the singers were students then. This was a master class and they were there to learn. Perhaps the voices or acting was not perfect but I would imagine all of the performers are much better now. My interest in this video was what Sondheim had to say, and even if the singers were not able to immediately pick up on what he wanted, they had this video to review and digest after the fact. I am sure that singing for Sondheim is a nerve-wracking experience. Anyway, I say do not criticize the performers, but take what you can learn from the master in this amazing video that has been shared on for all to enjoy......... free of charge.

Niyi Bammodu I know that you commented this 3 years ago and your probably like why am I getting notified on this. But I'd like to explain to you why she rolls her r's, she's a classically trained singer and in the theater (I don't know if you know anything about singing but) if you don't roll your r's it becomes dropped and doesn't sound right to the point where the audience doesn't hear it. So it's just her technique showing through and in a theater setting it would sound normal but seeing her on the stage this close-up it sounds weird but that's why she rolls her r's.

The soprano is singing exactly the way a trained soprano in a cathedral would sing and it's perfect for this. She also did a wonderful thing in her last verse with "slipping down the drain" and brought out the humour in that verse - the juxtaposition of the very formal phrasing with the informal slang expression is marvellous. I haven't seen anyone else do that with the part.

Amy was great. I remember reading somewhere that Sondheim said Beth Howland was the only one who nailed it perfectly. The tough part was the whole cast was so good that she couldn't get a Tony nomination (Elaine Stritch and Susan Browning were nominated for Best Leading Actress, Barbara Barrie and Pamela Meyers for Best Featured Actress). Interestingly. Company won Best Musical but none of the actors or actresses nominated won

  • @williamskelton325

Amy- WOW who is she?? She did superb. Honestly Beth Howland reincarnated, same delivery and channels the fear in her face with a touch of anger in her voice when her "congregation" doesnt move. I wish she reacted a little more to the soprano to really sell the "totally insane" bit, but really...amazing
Paul- clearly has a nice voice, but through nerves of being in the writers presence or it just not being his song he cracked on a few of the notes. There wasn't the feeling of true love or power. He could have learned it though he had the basics
Soprano- the rolling of the R's wasn't horrible, to me it added to the over the top tone of her roll as the wedding singer. She's supposed to be overdone. However I do wish she had the subtle gestures in her face to match the song...but she sung it brilliantly. But once you get to "totally insane" I think she missed.
Soundheim though, his face said it all, 3 kids singing arguably his most difficult song in front of him and doing it some decent justice. I wouldn't want to sing ANY of his stuff in front of him I'd be scared to death

To me (as someone who has both cast and directed musicals)... this is what I call the "never been there". I don't think the guy has yet to experience a love like that - so he doesn't have the experience to pull from. To him, perhaps, this IS his depth of what adoration would seem like (because I would hope and assume he is giving his all for Sondheim). Somewhat the soprano too. But the girl who plays Amy... she either KNOWS what inner panic is - or she is a good enough actress... AND a WISE one at that.
After all... THIS is not only a demonstration. THIS is an audition for the great Sondheim. And Sondheim SHOWS that, should he have a part for her - this actress is a SHOE-in. The others? He wouldn't ever hire them.

*This is what she is saying:*
    (First Part)
    Pardon me, is everybody here?
    Because if everybody's here
I want to thank you all
    For coming to the wedding
I'd appreciate you going even more
I mean, you must have lots of better things to do
And not a word of it to Paul
Remember Paul? You know, the man I'm going to marry
But I'm not, because I wouldn't ruin anyone
    As wonderful as he is
Thank you all for the gifts and the flowers
Thank you all, now it's back to the showers
Don't tell Paul, but I'm not getting married today
    (Second Part)
Listen everybody, look, I don't know what you're waiting for
    A wedding. What's a wedding? It's a prehistoric ritual
    Where everybody promises fidelity forever
Which is maybe the most horrifying word I ever heard of
Which is followed by a honeymoon, where suddenly he'll realize
He's saddled with a nut, and want to kill me, which he should
Thanks a bunch, but I'm not getting married
Go have lunch, cause I'm not getting married
You've been grand, but I'm not getting married
Don't just stand there, I'm not getting married
And don't tell Paul, but I'm not getting married today
    (Third Part)
Listen everybody, I'm afraid you didn't hear
Or do you want to see a crazy lady fall apart in front of you?
It isn't only Paul who would be ruining his life
You know, we'll both of us be losing our identities
I telephoned my analyst about it, and he said to see him Monday
But by Monday I'll be floating in the Hudson with the other garbage
I'm not well, so I'm not getting married
You've been swell, but I'm not getting married
Clear the hall, 'cause I'm not getting married
Thank you all, but I'm not getting married
And don't tell Paul, but I'm not getting married today
    (Fourth Part)
Look, I didn't want to have to tell you
But I may be coming down with hepatitis
And I think I'm gonna faint
So if you want to watch me faint, I'll do it happily
But wouldn't it be funnier to go and watch a funeral?
So thank you for the twenty-seven dinner plates
    Thirty-seven butter knives
    Forty-seven paperweights
    Fifty-seven candle holders
