This whole number and scene DOES hit different with Bobbie as a woman - suddenly it feels like Bobbie is almost looking at a mirror when she watches Joanne - like she's seeing how she herself could end up if she continues the way she has been, so jaded that even having a loving husband no longer does anything for her.
If you think about it; the way Joanne sings the part about the ladies who watch to Bobbie also feels like it’s her serving a warning. As if she’s saying, “look at me. Look at you.” And the way her demeanor changes from that point forward. They see each other. Who they had been. Who they could become. Brilliant, indeed.
I went to see this production in April of 2022, getting a great seat about six or seven rows back. Early in this song, Patti found me randomly in the audience and sang most of the rest of it right to me. This is something some actors do to help personalize the message they're sending and something I'd tried a few times when I was majoring in theatre back in the early '90s. We were all wearing masks in the theater at the time, but I returned her eye contact throughout the song and hopefully gave her enough of what she needed in that moment. Excellent performance from a big time Broadway performer and a lifelong memory for me.
Actually this is strichs song Patti on the underhand makes it to cute the song is supposed to be sung in a sun mmm what drunk state it’s a depressing song look at carol Burnett version from 1978 she does it better in my opinion but I still like Patti and the music backing her up is good it’s just a different take on it
She does it for her encore number at her concerts now. I loved Elaine Stritch's version of it also. Only Patti would have the balls to sing this song with Elaine Stritch on the stage with her
I loved the remake of this show with a female lead, but I much prefer this song when bobby is sitting there uncomfortable as he's being flirted with throughout this scene. it gives this song a darker edge which I love but Patti is so great that just listening to her sing this song is enough
I may forever question Sondheim's decision to update the "Copy of Life/Copy of Time" line, but the sheer brilliance of having "Here's to the girls who just watch, aren't they the best?" be delivered TO Bobbie is so staggering it makes it worth it.
It was an authorized recording of just this one song by the show’s social media team. They released it for publicity in the show’s final weeks on Broadway. I was amazed when they first posted it!
Toasting so many times and seemingly never actually taking a sip... It's all an act without a lick of sincerity, God she is brilliant. I know she's probably not taking a sip as an actress busy singing, but it would also make sense for the character to be faking it.
I went to london to see a completely different show but this had extended so I definitely got a ticket. For 20 pounds no less because it was a rush ticket. I was so impressed with her doing all that choreography at the beginning of the second act.
The show won at least three Tony's Why didn't they do a cast recording? They did of the London production (I saw both) and the NYC was better than the west end production
I'd like to propose the toast Here's to the ladies who lunch Everybody laugh Lounging in their caftans and planning a brunch On their own behalf Off to the gym, then to a fitting Claiming they're fat And looking grim 'cause they've been sitting Choosing a hat Does anyone still wear a hat? I'll drink to that Here's to the girls who stay smart Aren't they a gas? Rushing to their classes in optical art Wishing it would pass Another long exhausting day Another thousand dollars A matinée, a Pinter play Perhaps a piece of Mahler's I'll drink to that And one for Mahler Here's to the girls who play wife Aren't they too much? Keeping house but clutching a copy of life Just to keep in touch The ones who follow the rules And meet themselves at the schools Too busy to know that they're fools Aren't they a gem? I'll drink to them Let's all drink to them And here's to the girls who just watch Aren't they the best? Excellent. I just discovered Company last year, while working on my first musical. My biggest "problem" is that all musical numbers I've seen are just one space for the characters to "do a song". But except for "Side by Side", I was missing some "acting", specially when the productions I've seen here have AWESOME actors on it. Even Patti Lupone! She made a production with a Symphonic Orchestra, and as great as she is, it's just her doing a rendition of the song instead of "acting". Real question, are directors afraid of directing her? Because here it seems like the director just told her "please "act" the song", and she did. And did GREAT.
@@alexanderbowen5172its so they could swap out Life magazine with time magazine two lines after Just a change to make it more contemporary Im fine with both though i am obviously used to the old version and didnt care that nobody reads Life anymore (does it even still exist?)
Right. This doesn't hold a candle to her performance in the concert version with Neil Patrick Harris that was so bitter, cynical, and dark. This version is almost comical which makes it less impactful.
Patti is great but this version doesn’t seem to get at the heart of the song to me. Barbara Walsh’s version sung with rough voice and in a drunken matter and really revealing the self loathing at the end with girls who just watch line makes much more sense to me. Here the everybody rise at the end is triumphant where in Walsh’s version it’s desperate and out of control.
I like the choices Patti made in the version with Neil Patrick Harris (where she has on a black pantsuit, it it was uploaded like 12 years ago) a bit more than this one
Imagine having the balls to walk away from Broadway musicals while winning Olivier and TONY awards for the same role at the top of your game. ICON
what do you mean?
and then coming back to broadway two years later

Brilliant. I never thought of this scene that way but seeing Bobbie’s body language and the way she’s looking at Joanne

omg I saw it in April 2022 too! Lucky you!
It’s giving
“She sang right to me… And the other Homosexuals”
That was FABULOUS 💛👍🏽🙋🏽♀️
lucky you!
this woman is LOCKED IN. she performs the song so differently every time!
It's called being a stage actress. And in this case, one of the best of our time.
Nobody can sing this song better than Patti.
😆😂🤣😂😅🤣😆

Agatha All Along brought me here too my very long Patti Lapone ROAD!!!
I'm so jealous! I wish I could experience the Ms Lapone for the first time 🥰 Try her in Evita if you haven't yet 💖
She's still got it. ALL OF IT.

One of the greatest performances of all time.
I've been more impressed by Ms. LuPone year after year. She handles this song better each time I've seen her perform it. Wow!
It's a shame we'll never see the true greats doing this together: Patti and Raul.
Here for the queen of cups.
How DID we get a video of such high quality?! This is wonderful!

Divine ICON🤷🏻♀️
I saw this production, about 50 years after seeing the original road show with George Maharis. Loved them both times
This is a beautifully shot rendition and I'd take the full show if they ever gave it to us!

Also, those dress and earrings, tho! What a great performance of an iconic role, refreshed and revised again.
She’s freaking amazing!! I love that she hasn’t lost her touch!!
Sheesh what a Queen omg ❤
Jaw-droppingly great!!!!
I would just like to point out she's belting like this while sitting down.
An incredible talent..
Too good…. Just too good. Sondheim was surrounded with the greats who could really do justice to his work.
I LOVE Katrina Lenk's interaction in this. It makes it better
She reminds me of Karen Walker from Will and Grace.
The show won at least three Tony's Why didn't they do a cast recording? They did of the London production (I saw both) and the NYC was better than the west end production
I saw this production from the first row!
This is art
She's incredible, insane ❤
She’s the bestest
Chills
I'd like to propose the toast
Here's to the ladies who lunch
Everybody laugh
Lounging in their caftans and planning a brunch
On their own behalf
Off to the gym, then to a fitting
Claiming they're fat
And looking grim 'cause they've been sitting
Choosing a hat
Does anyone still wear a hat?
I'll drink to that
Here's to the girls who stay smart
Aren't they a gas?
Rushing to their classes in optical art
Wishing it would pass
Another long exhausting day
Another thousand dollars
A matinée, a Pinter play
Perhaps a piece of Mahler's
I'll drink to that
And one for Mahler
Here's to the girls who play wife
Aren't they too much?
Keeping house but clutching a copy of life
Just to keep in touch
The ones who follow the rules
And meet themselves at the schools
Too busy to know that they're fools
Aren't they a gem?
I'll drink to them
Let's all drink to them
And here's to the girls who just watch
Aren't they the best?
When they get depressed, it's a bottle of Scotch
Plus a little jest
Another chance to disapprove
Another brilliant zinger
Another reason not to move
Another vodka stinger
I'll drink to that
So here's to the girls on the go
Everybody tries
Look into their eyes and you'll see what they know
Everybody dies
A toast to that invincible bunch
The dinosaur surviving the crunch
Let's hear it for the ladies who lunch
Everybody rise, rise
Rise, rise
Rise, rise
Rise, rise
Rise
I've loved this musical for 50 years. I still prefer Bobby over Bobbie, though.
I saw them both ways and I liked them both ways. Each really great in its own way

I love how they updated the lyrics to girls in their prime instead of girls who play wife.
I’m unsure why they did this though?

... it's different now, she's singing it *to* Bobbie now and it's doesn't come across to me as caustic as before
There's definitely a lyric change or two as well - the second verse in particular is edited to be less dismissive of the ladies "in their prime."
Right. This doesn't hold a candle to her performance in the concert version with Neil Patrick Harris that was so bitter, cynical, and dark. This version is almost comical which makes it less impactful.
Who’s Bobbie here?
Katrina Lenk!!
I was front Mezz. Praying she’d stop the show

Is this is the Smithsonian yet?
