James Asprocolas yea before WW2 the border of Poland included parts of today’s Lithuania, Belarus, and Ukraine. so it’s possible your grandma could have been from today’s Belarus, since parts of it were part of Poland back then.

I'm from Belarus and I could say that this video is highly relatable! It was fun to watch XD Still the truth is that in schools the prime language is still russian, and we usually have belarussian classes like 2-3 times in a week. Which is really sad, tbh And, yeah, don't call me russian
The name of your country is literally "White Russia" in almost every European language, including most Slavic languages. I know that some Belorussians consider themselves as Lithuanians or something, but wouldn't they be then speaking a non-Slavic language or be a national minority?
I am Belarusian and this video is good, but not perfect. At first, if I speak Belarusian with people from Russia, they almost can't understand me, so it's better to speak Russian with Russian people (I am a native Belarusian speaker). Also it's kinda weird to call our language "a mixture between Polish and Russian". Then, after Crimea was taken to Russia, Belarus became really neutral (it lead to even more close friendship with Ukraine). And, if to be exact, it's correct to pronounce not "Belarušian", but "Belarusan". Howewer, you may write "Belarusian" and it would be correct. I will write something about the history of the region and Belarus from Grand Dutchy to USSR. During Grutchy of Lithuania Belarus developed its culture and force. Dutches were Belarusian and govermental documents were also made in Ruthenian (Old Belarusian) language, but that Dutchy was really tolerant. All nations (from Tatars to Polish) and all religions (from Heathenism to Islam) in Dutchy were treated the same almost all time before Commonwealth was formed. In the times of Alhierd and Vitaut the Great our Dutchy was a country from the sea to the sea (covering everything between Baltic and Black sea). During the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth Belarusians were somehow pressed by Polish. Their influence became really great after 1650s. But Dutchy was still independant in that Commonwealth. Belarusians, Lithuanians etc. were still able to develop their culture freely. After 1790s almost all Dutchy was covered by Russia. Howewer, national cultures of nations from Dutchy were still developing. That time brought Belarusians and Ukrainians (and, of course, Russians) their best poets and authors. In Belarus -- Bahuševič, Kolas, Kupala etc. In Ukraine -- Taras Shevchenko, in Russia -- Pushkin and Lermontov. When Empire fell, national republics started to form (Belarusian People's Republic, Ukrainian People's Republic). But it didn't take long to them to be covered by Soviet Russia (formed is 1917), later USSR (from 1922). I guess later history of the region is well known. Thanks for a great video!
Late comment/addition, but I was under the impression that Belarus before 1900s was the "actual" Lithuania, while the current Lithuania was created by "neo-Lithuanians", a subculture made by Russia to split them away from Poland.
+Yagi Well, current Lithuanians are in fact descendants of the "original Lithuanians" who also inhabited parts of Belarus back in the day, hovewer for most of the history of the Commonwealth they were mainly rural population. Belarus and Lithuania were commonly seen as in fact parts of Poland, "Lithuanians" and "Belarusians" often meant "Polish people form Lithuania/Belarus region" as all the noble families and most cities' and towns' inhabitants were either Poles or native population polonised for centuries.
Antos Sivyh its very beutiful and rare when belarusian (baltarusas) say that lithuanians where very tolerant and that lithuanians inherintly tries to bring western values to its neighbors. Mosly people from further east only claims, that we are somehow fashist rusofobic and ... But in fact we only wish the best for others and we where always the defensive wall against empires
I see alternative historians here. Modern day Lithuanians always were Lithuanians - a Baltic people who split from Slavs centuries before Slavs even divided to Eastern, Western and Southern and scattered all over East European Plane. Belarusians are the Slavs originated from the Eastern Slavic tribes of Dregovichi and Radimichi (both split with Ukraine), and Krivichi (split with Russia). Only when Kievan Rus, the confederation of Eastern Slavic tribes, was desintegrated, a splinter known as Principality of Polotsk which constituted 2/3 of modern Belarus was conqured by Lithuania before Mongols even came and this is where Belarusians started to divergent from Russians and Ukrainians. Latter on Lithuania expanded even more by conquering Kiev from Mongols, ended bloodline of Rus dukes here and Proclaimed itself Grand Duchy, which made the split between Russians and Ukrainians. This way Lithuania ended up with little empire where majority of the population were Slavs but imperial core was Baltic, Lithuanian, so they were forced to conduct a slightly more Slavic friendly policy yet they still were doing usual imperial stuff like forcefull conversion from Eastern Orthodox faith to Roman Catholic, romanization of language an so on. There is still confusion Lithuanians and Belarusians somehow related whereas theyr relationships are similar to Austrians and Hungarians except even the faith and writing system was different and the Slavs were "second class" to Lithuanians. Lithuania did not been part of Poland originally and definitely not the "rural Poles". In fact they and Novgorod were competing for dominance and Rus leftovers in post Mongols Eastern Europe and only rapid rise of Moscow that obsorbed Novgorod forced Lithuania to join unjust Commonwealth dominated by Poland with Poles looking down on this "Eastern peasant" those further downgrading Belarusians to "third class" and eventually handing them to Russians.
Gor Mor balts did not split from slavs. Balts came to europe 3500 B.C and originated directly from proto indo europeans. Slavs originated from sarmatians/schytians 400 AD after huns destroyed rome. Thats why lithuanian language is older then latin, heleonic and probably is older then sansckrit , becouse balts gave birth to "vedas" who came from north to india and gave birth to indian culture

I think you need to update this video, especially the Friends Zone part. The way Belarus supported Russia after its invasion on Ukraine makes one doubt if it is still an independent country.
Belarusian is not a mixture of Polish and Russian, nor is it "derived" from Russian as you've stated. It is a language in its very own right, belonging to the East Slavic family-- to which Russian and Ukrainian both also belong. Modern Belarusian developed organically from the same Old East Slavic mother tongue alongside Ukrainian and Russian, while featuring a greater degree of lexical and phonological influence from Polish by virtue of geographical proximity. You wouldn't say that a sister is "derived" from her brother, so saying that the Belarusian language derives from the Russian one is fallacious. Trasyanka is another matter entirely, and is a relaxed, informal dialect which mixes linguistic elements of Belarusian and Russian. It is generally spoken in more comfortable, everyday settings. Very sadly, the pure language is languishing and is increasingly neglected, as it is often associated with rural or less educated people (this is in no small part due to Lukashenko's very pro Russian political stance).
Hm, as a Hong Kong native, I guess this is kind of similar to the fallacious claim I sometimes hear that Cantonese is a dialect of Mandarin? As though Cantonese was actually derived from Mandarin when in fact they both diverged from Middle Chinese with Cantonese being linguistically closer to it? Is that a good comparison?

@@ramonaselas1053 I agree about Montenegro, but Macedonia and Slovenia don't belong in this group. It is true that we can also understand a lot from Slovenian and Macedonian, but not as much as the other 4. Macedonian is also written in Cyrillic, so only Serbs and Montenegrins can read it.

Dear +Geography Now. Thank you for an overall pretty comprehensive video. I wanted to provide some feedback if you are open to it. Belarus does not mean White Russia, sorry to disappoint the pro-Russian rhetoric. It is derived from the terms Belaja - White , Rus - Ruthenia. Russia likes to claim the name, however, Ruthenia was a different historical multi-ethnic state and does not correspond to the current day Russia - Rossia. The name of the mixed language is Trasianka not Transianka, which is also easier to pronounce. Russians do not understand Belarusan/Belarusian when it's spoken. The only Russians that understand Belarusan language are the ones that studies or have been exposed to if for an extended period of time. I tested this many times, but people just blink, stare and on rare occasion smile. The language was NOT derived from the Russian language but. It was Russified by Russian starting in 1800s as part of the colonization rhetoric. There are a number of features that Belarusan has, which neither Russian nor Polish languages exhibit. So to claim that it's a mix or a dialect is incorrect. There are two different set of grammar and spelling rules for Belarusan language, one predates Russian influence and another one after it. They are called Taraškievica and Narkamaŭka. Taraškievica includes more native words and phonetic spelling. While Narkamaŭka is the result of Russification of the langauge. While the pronunciation is of Belarusian is close enough, it is not technically correct. More exact pronunciation is Beh-lah-roo-see-an and alternative spelling Belarusan - Beh-lah-roo-san. In some shots I also saw the misspelling with 2 s. It's always 1 s as there is only 1 s in the world Belarus. Thanks for your time.
:-) *chuckle* good question. There is definitely plenty of Slavic characteristics in the culture, but there is also many other ethnicities that helped shape Belarusans as they are today.
Belarusian is not derived from Russian, those languages are closely related, with common roots. If Belarus, Ukraine and Russia are sisters like you said, then it's a sister-language to Russian :) In fact the form of "Ruthenian" which become modern Belarusian was a dominant (and for long time official) language of Grand Duchy of Lithuania. There where books printed in this language since early XVI century (like Skaryna's Bible), before first books printed in Russian.
Artur M. it was the dominant written language because Lithuanian was not a written language until the 16th century all our dukes and ethnic Lithuanians spoke Lithuanian belarussian was spoke by the ruthenians lets not fight admit belarus was never GDL its only that our king mindaugas married the princess of polotsk so our history is tied
"Lithuanian was not a written language until the 16th century all our dukes and ethnic Lithuanians spoke Lithuanian belarussian was spoke by the ruthenians" Haha. You can definetly see this by reading Statutes of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Ooops. So dukes used not written language while their citizens used written.
Screw Belarus, and not only that, but my country is worst known for having less men than women and it's one of the most s***idal countries according to Google
To my mind it's amazing video about my mothercountry, our people kind and friendly. We always glad to see tourist in our country. Belarusian nature picturesque, cities clean and beautiful. Welcome to Belarus ❤
Indeed! After all, not only was this a historically significant flag (it was used in the 1918-1919 Belarusian Democratic Republic, as well as the early Republic of Belarus from 1991 to 1995), but it also has a contemporary _political_ significance as well: it is popular among the anti-Lukashenko opposition!
Here's a joke I've heard: Russia and Belarus wanted to reestablish the Soviet Union with just the two of them, as a response to the EU, but the plan failed because Putin and Lukashenko couldn't agree which of them will be the president of the union.
***** Because they wanted a common currency/language/flag, and they wanted to expand it...And the flag they wanted was based off the Soviet flag...My country is right next to them, I don't like expansionism...
Name may come from the fact that Belarus was conquered by Lithuanians (and then pretty much became it). But it's not White Russia, it's White Ruthenia.
Angel B Serbia is just a basic slavic Red,Blue and white color, boring and nothing unique. Montengro's color's are not as aggressive and awesome as Albanian's. Albanian flag whatever people think of us is very simple and badass. The color's are perfect.

Inky Scrolls He lives in Southern California, where it's at least 26.67°C (80°F) 2/3 of the time, and where rain is uncommon (at least in LA and surrounding areas)
"White Russia" can be misleading because it plays into the idea that it is part of the modern country Russia. More accurate is "White Rus' " Russia was adopted as a state name by the Tsardom of Muscovy because they claimed authority over all of Rus' (aka Ruthenia). Rus' is a family of slavic nations including several regions that were named by color. For example, Galicia region was called Red Rus' , and today's Belarus obviously was White Rus'. There was also Kievan Rus' (basically old Ukraine), named after Kiev, and several other Rus' lands. Going back to first sentence, Moscow claimed the right to rule over the whole family of Rus' slavic nations, so they called themselves basically the state of Rus' in general (aka "Russia"). It is like how Saudi Arabia calls itself Arabia because it implies they have right to rule all Arab lands.
milkmn00 You might be right but as an Austrian I can tell you that the German name of Belarus is "Weißrussland", which means exactly "White Russia" (weiß=white, Russland=Russia)
Fredi Miksch True but I want people to understand that doesnt make them modern "Russian". Russland literally means "land of Russ" , or in the common transliteration, "Rus' land". Yes, that is essentially the same meaning as the word "Russia" as well (Ruthenia comes from Latin, Rus' is the common transliteration, Russia comes from the Greek, which is what the Russian Cyrillic alphabet was based on). My point is that Moscow chose the name Russia on purpose because that gives the impression that they control all Rus' (always their idea of 'destiny' , believed even today). You can see it works by how many people think "Belarusians/Ukrainians/etc are actually 'Russians' ". It's different. They are one of the Rus' , but different from Moscow Russians. Just like Navajo and Cherokee are both Native American, they are still different and shouldnt be confused as being the same.
I just wanted to tell you that "White Russia" isn't completely incorrect because many countries use this translation even if it is wrong (I didn't know this before but I guess that you are right). Of course Belarus isn't Russia and I think that many people know that.
"It is like how Saudi Arabia calls itself Arabia because it implies they have right to rule all Arab lands." That's the best explanation I ever heard. And yes, it is correct.
Hey Paul, are you going to do the United Kingdom as one vid or are you going to do england, scotland, wales and northern ireland seperately? You know either way it's gonna get...complicated :P
Jayfive276 I think it's most likely going to be one (probably incredibly long) video on the UK as a whole, as the four separate "countries" aren't actually sovereign states.
james learing The UK isn't *that* diverse culturally, at least compared to other countries in the world like India, Nigeria or even Russia. All 4 'countries' of the UK speak predominantly English, have majority white populations, are mostly secular and have broad support for Liberal values. Plus, we've been unified for centuries and have historically experienced things like the Reformation and Industrial Revolution more or less together. Compare that with somewhere like India, which is far more ethnically, religiously, linguistically and culturally diverse and you cannot justify doing the 'countries' of the UK separately.
Ruthenia was preslavic i'd say. It covers most of the eastern europe and was ruled by Viking dukes. Then they start to fight each other and borders occurs. But Viking dukes ruled very different nations and tribes, some of them was even baltic and Finno-Ugric, not slavic.
King Crabbly But Ruthenia and Rus mean exactly the same, and Ruthenia is a more germanized version of this word. There are many regions that have Rus in their slavic names and translate to Ruthenia in English. eg. pl:"Ruś czerwona" translates to "Red ruthenia" in english or svk:"Podkarpatská Rus" translates to "Carpathian Ruthenia"

@@Porkeater2610957 Which language do Americans speak?;)
Interesting fact about Belarus: even though almost all of Belarus citizens prefer speaking Russian, and despite russians are the most frequent visitors to Belarus, all the road signs in Belarus are made either in Belarusian or English.
Technically it's more practical this way. Too many languages cause problems and poles can at least understand our language when they visit.

Then explain how must of Belarusian language vocabulary is either had origin from Polish or Russian

Are Belarusians even slavic ppl?
:-) *chuckle* good question.
There is definitely plenty of Slavic characteristics in the culture, but there is also many other ethnicities that helped shape Belarusans as they are today.
Elizabeth M. the best comment
I’m Belarusian, and all this information is new to me.
Thank you Elizabeth
Belarusian is not derived from Russian, those languages are closely related, with common roots. If Belarus, Ukraine and Russia are sisters like you said, then it's a sister-language to Russian :)
In fact the form of "Ruthenian" which become modern Belarusian was a dominant (and for long time official) language of Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
Artur M. I thought Ruthenian was an old name for Ukrainians
It was used for both. The terms Belarusian and Ukrainian (in modern mining) got into use in 19th century.
"Lithuanian was not a written language until the 16th century all our dukes and ethnic Lithuanians spoke Lithuanian belarussian was spoke by the ruthenians"
Haha.
You can definetly see this by reading Statutes of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
Ooops.
So dukes used not written language while their citizens used written.

Hello from Kazakhstan! Thanks for the great video.
Беларусь классная страна)))
As to the flag - I think it's was worth mentioning about the write-red-white flag that war prior to Lukashenko.

In swedish we call it Vitryssland, which if you would translate it to english, it would be: Whiterussia
***** K, but harder to figure out on english. Unless you can speak russia.
Name may come from the fact that Belarus was conquered by Lithuanians (and then pretty much became it). But it's not White Russia, it's White Ruthenia.
In Polish it's "Białoruś"
Belorussian flag is really beautiful, isnt it?

05:12 You think summer averages of 18°C are "cold" and "below room temperature"? Firstly, how hot are your rooms (!), and secondly, you wait to you see the north of the UK. Summers averages of around 12°C away from the cities (and yes, you _will_ see people in bikinis and speedos!). When you've lived here for a few years (decades?), you get used to it.
Inky Scrolls He lives in Southern California, where it's at least 26.67°C (80°F) 2/3 of the time, and where rain is uncommon (at least in LA and surrounding areas)
But Belarus is land locked so that's why u don't see bikinis but UK isnt
Why is Estonia a part of Russia? 1:20
"White Russia" can be misleading because it plays into the idea that it is part of the modern country Russia. More accurate is "White Rus' "
Russia was adopted as a state name by the Tsardom of Muscovy because they claimed authority over all of Rus' (aka Ruthenia).
"It is like how Saudi Arabia calls itself Arabia because it implies they have right to rule all Arab lands."
That's the best explanation I ever heard. And yes, it is correct.
First time learning about Belarus, it seems the country is beautiful and clean. I hope one day i can visit Belarus. Greetings from Malaysia.(Asia)
Do you mean Russian Belarus.?
Hey Paul, are you going to do the United Kingdom as one vid or are you going to do england, scotland, wales and northern ireland seperately?
You know either way it's gonna get...complicated :P
Jayfive276 I think it's most likely going to be one (probably incredibly long) video on the UK as a whole, as the four separate "countries" aren't actually sovereign states.
ChubbyBunny217 Ya but they all have there own cultures.
james learing so?
james learing The UK isn't *that* diverse culturally, at least compared to other countries in the world like India, Nigeria or even Russia.
Jayfive276 Seems like he's only doing independent, sovereign states
Belarus means white Ruthenia rather than white Russia.
Belo-rus'. White-o-rus'. The modern Russian name for Russia is the Greek version of Russian word (Rus').
In German Belarus is literelly called white Russia
