Crazy! I've watched 50 or more, reaction videos on this gal...who, incidentally, won Norway's Got Talent at age 7...and I haven't heard a reactor who had anything but stellar feedback on her. She's 10, in this video, and is AMAZING!!!
She was doing this cover from Screamin' Jay Hawkins version. This is why she grunts and growls.

Seen thousands of vocals at every age for many many years and that is the best vocal I have ever heard. Timing,breathing and more tricks than the beast have and never came close to going off pitch. Phrasing is out of this world. A true Artist!!! Can"t be taught!

She has been approached by both Disney and Sony who wants to sign her, but her parents don't want her to, as they want her to have a normal upbringing and play with kids her own age. She'll be big in the inustry no matter what and the parents know it. No need to rush and I absolutely support this desition.
Angelina was 9 here. As I mentioned in the chat, this one is different than most of her others. I think she was maybe advised to put the growl away until her vocal chords have fully developed to avoid an damage, but she obviously has full control of it, so I have a feeling she will be breaking that out again (where fitting) in the coming years. As someone that has seen (i think) all of her performances I can put your mind at ease by saying I have not heard her growl like this in any other performances. Except a couple very short examples. The thing about the tongue retraction... you can bet that is 100% intentional to get the sound she is going for. Thanks for checking out more Angelina! I will look forward to your next one :)
I agree with it all, except one thing. Angelina will never bring back that growl in her vocal register again. Part of it maybe, but not like this. Her voice has very much developed since this, it is not coming so easy for her anymore, as it did at barely 9 years of age. It is not only about choice, but about ability when you get older. It is how we girls are made and developed, I guess. But this performance right here, is in my opinion the most impressive of all times, from any 9 year old or younger. Maybe even for a year or two, or five, older. It is just mindblowing. It was made at just the right time of her career to get that wild and amazing sound. Very much fun to watch of course, but a one off, as the say.
That growl is made pacifically by the original artist Jay Hawkins - if - may i say Angelina Jordan could not reach that growl she would never have sung the song, as a lover of music since she was 1 and a half; she took the harshness he displayed in a physical sense and verbal sense and Angelina Jordan sung it in a physical and verbal way of her love to put a spell on you. She has complete control of her voice and uses it as she deems appropriate.

Tina - Thank you for your outstanding reaction to this Angelina Jordan performance. It is obvious that you are a true professional who knows the technical and artistic aspects of vocal music. After 40+ years as a music educator and jazz musician, I would say to all young singers out there: Don’t try to sing like Angelina until you know how to do it, especially when she belts out in the high register. Take voice lessons and learn everything you can about vocal technique and artistic styling. If you try to do what she does before you know what you are doing, you could severely damage your voice and may never be able to sing again. Angelina has a gift that very few people in history have ever had. All of her physical vocal abilities and sense of musical style came with her at birth and because her family played music all the time as she was growing up. She is a force of nature. You young singers can aspire to sing like her, but don’t push it. We would like to see and hear you on UA-cam someday!

It was interesting to see you have recorded some of the same songs as Angelina including Natural Woman, Love Me Tender, Cry Me a River and Titantium. Fascinating to see how differently they can be sung by different artists. I think would enjoy watching the versions Angelina has made and you're obviously well qualified and experienced to share your thoughts :) I did recognise some Sydney locations in your videos too!

Every time I hear Angelina sing, I picture her stepping out of an old black & white movie, to bring us back in time, so we can fall in love with these genuine masterpieces again ❤️ 💚 💙 💜 Great reaction!!! A little backstory, for some of your subscribers who may not know......Angelina's Grandmother loved Blues & Jazz music, & they used to listen to it all the time, & Angelina was hooked, so her younger style tipped the scale closer to Jazz, and as she ages, she has developed many other styles of music, including her own, & now can sing almost anything!!! She also sews most of her outfits, does all her own musical arrangements, & goes barefoot, because she met a young girl when performing one day, who had no shoes & could not afford to buy any, so Angelina gave her the shoes she had on, & in memory of the girl, & poverty, she continues to goes barefoot! What can I say, except this young girl, is an inspiration, an amazing talent, has a huge compassionate heart, & the world is a much nicer place to be, with her in it !!!
Very good reaction. I agree with everything you said. We are very privileged to have this version of I put a spell on you. It is a work of art which I believe will live on like the old classics of the past. Angelina has softened the growl in any performance I have seen since then as I am sure she is very aware of what it could do to her vocal cords.

From us fans reactions of this type are always highly appreciated, they comfort us in the respect and admiration we have for this incredible little girl. Hard to say what you can continue to know her with, all her about 130 interpretations have something so particular and are performed with such talent, that it is really difficult to choose, one of the most spectacular is certainly her complete reinterpretation of Bohemian Rhapsody at AGCT, but she also released her recording of BR on major music channels
Great reaction! This isn't a "normal" (if that exists) Angelina performance. It's a tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins a very peculiar artist from the 50's. So she does things here with her voice that she normally doesn't 😉 Thanks for reacting to our barefoot Princess! Please keep them coming 🤗
Out of about 130 songs she has performed, this one is the only one that has much growling. There are a couple of others that have just a slight touch of it. Watching vocal coaches critique her is usually amusing if they don't know anything else about her. Kind of like watching someone who never heard of Dimash trying to tell us what he really should be doing, if he wants to improve, as they listen to SOS. You, OTOH, make general observations that could apply to anyone trying to do what Angelina does in this song and you do not get caught up in saying what she should or shouldn't do. That's great to hear as it shows you approach each individual with humility and respect as you realize that you may not be seeing the whole picture here. I love your intelligent application of principles. I had subscribed several months ago and have enjoyed all your reactions/analyses. Hopefully, you will take some time to get to know Angelina better. As with Dimash and Morissette and other really good singer/performers, I think you will find Angelina a great teaching tool. The only negative comment I have to make about this reaction is: you announced it several days ago and it was excruciating having to wait this long to view it. 😊😊😊

Dear Tina, thank you for getting to this. I hope my request was what got it on your list but either way I am so glad you are doing it. The writing she did was musical changes and you saw that the musical director smiled when he saw them. She does her own arrangements & they filmed this when she had just turned 9. By the way, at 6 she vowed to always perform barefoot until every child in the world has shoes.

Dear Tina, she already has over 120 songs performed including 5 originals. PLEASE also react to her first recorded song I Who Have Nothing that she did at age 6. Since the conversation after the song is in another language she asks was it good and the man says it was real good for your 1st time. Later she also did Whitney's I Have Nothing so you don't get confused.

There is much more to this child than you may realize. If you want to hear her at thirty review her AGT Champions performances at thirteen. Believe you will agree. They are her arrangements. Bohemian rhapsody and Beyond The Yellow Brick Road.
Her arrangement of "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" was based largely on a version by Sara Bareilles. (She's already reacted to it, BTW.) "Bohemian Rhapsody" was completely original.

The best reaction videos to any songs but particularly to Angelina Jordan I find are those that talk about vocal technique, dynamics and such. I greatly appreciate your professional input and honest and frank comments in particular in regards the safety for her voice. You will hear other live performances where she puts some of that growling into her voice but it's very rare. It's nice to know she has it when she wants it.

She not only has a fantastic voice she understands music and arranges all her own songs, even at age 9 . She only did the extreme vocal sounds as a one time because it is a true tribute to the original Jay Hawkens video, you have to watch his video to understand why. You should review her new studio quality videos now that she is 16.
You summed up perfectly why this is never going to be my favorite performance of Angelina, despite all the praise and the obvious wow-factor of someone that young. You really should do yourself a favor and listen to everytime we say goodbye, that she did at the age of ten. That is a jaw-dropping performance!
The coach's face is predominantly displayed in the thumbnails of all the reaction videos. And I could kinda guess the coach's general impression on the performance based on her facial expression or lack of it. Very rare, however, that her eyes are closed. Maybe only one or two other instances. so, no idea. I guess I will need to impatiently wait.

This song in particular was Angelina's interpretation of Screamin Jay Hawkins' version (a very out there version, lol), so the retractions, the growls and other resources she used were to adapt Jay's version to her style. And she seldom does that in her other songs. But your advice is perfect; if done too often or incorrectly, they could be damaging to the singer's vocal chords.
If you decide to check out more of Angelina's many covers and her original compositions, you'll realize that we don't have to wait until she's 30 to appreciate her full potential. There are very strong performance she and her fans have uploaded to UA-cam.

Wait until you hear her when she's 13!! Do "STAY" and "Born to Die"or better yet do "Summertime" when she was 7!! Or "Fly Me to the Moon" at 8. BTW did you notice her making her arrangement changes and giving them to the band? She does her own arrangements and if you watch her she is also directing the band.

Thank you for this reaction to angelina Jordan. She was barely 9 years old in this video. She disen’t Friele and scream so often but she can belt if the song needs her to and she dosen’t belt that often. She can adapt her voice to any kind of music genre but her heart is with jazz so you will hear the jazzy/blues with vocal fry often but she can sing anything . She has about 130 songs out on UA-cam so this was just the tip of the iceberg. Would love to see you react to more from this amazing young singer angelina Jordan.

In her other interpretations of that song later on, she does not use the growling, which is replaced wisely by a shout.
What i find totally astonishing is her choice of the song at her age.
It is, for a child, a sign of an early maturity in taste and election of jazz music that clearly distinguishes Angelina from all the other young singers and makes her the precocious vocal artist that she is and a true musical phenomenon.
It seems tho' that with Angelina the song is not chosen to suit her voice. She simply changes her voice to suit the song. Big statement I know, but see lots more of her vast repertoire with its amazing versatility, and decide whether it is true or not.
After the production of this video she sang this song in public appearance a few times, but never at this intensity. She went all out in this video but seems to have held back since then, probably for the same reason Coach talked about. I agree her voice was still under development at this age of 9, . When she got to 12, her voice had strengthened and blossomed into something so beautiful. When she covered songs from superstars like Adele, Rihanna, Lana del Ray, Amy Winehouse, etc... she captured her fans' hearts and never let go. The followings, imo, are best cover works. Subscribed to your channel, the first time you featured Angelina and eagerly search for further reactions to her, from you. Would be absolutely delighted if you could schedule to react more frequently!
I see that there is a comment by Guitar Girl, suggesting you react to Diana Ankudinova, another very fine singer. One of her suggestions is that you react to her singing "Wicked Game" , Angelina has also performed this song and the two performances are so different that they cannot really be compared. The song was written by Chris Isaac, in 1962, and is a song of obsession or, if you will, obsessive love. I have listened to 6+ singers perform this song and, in my opinion, Angelina is the only one who understands the emotions within the lyrics. I hope you will consider reacting to it and put the link below.

Never heard her growl again. She only uses what is needed
Even when she sang this song in concert. It was not as exciting...
To be fair, it wasn't that she _never_ screamed and growled again (see: "It's a Man's World"), but she never did it anywhere near as forcefully, or as much in any one song as here. It wasn't until years later that she started to find a way to do this live that didn't sound like a pathetic "neutered" version of the same arrangement. (Even then, it wasn't nearly as good.) I'm afraid there may be no way of doing it live that will ever compare to this studio recording at 9. (She may find it someday, but I'm not holding my breath.)

Several have mentioned her paying tribute to the original artist Screamin Jay Hawkins. His version was very theatrical. Her version followed his pretty close. It’s pretty impressive for this little 9 year old girl doing her best to sound like SJH if he had done it as a blues number. I’m putting a link for her singing this song at 11 years old in Korea. I agree with you,but I think though she has some SJH I also think she mixed in some Nina Simone & Louis Armstrong in there also. That's why I think it had that sound & tone & the color it had.

I haven’t heard her strain in the other renditions.
You must hear her now and even when she was 10. She was only 8 yrs at the time of this video.
I don't think there's any other performance by her that I've seen where she puts this kind of stress on her voice. I think this was just a matter of her wanting to give proper homage to Screaming Jay Hawkins.
I encourage you to listen to some of her later tracks, ages 12 to the present. I think you'll see she has people around her who understand how to care for her voice and also protect her from the worst parts of the industry.

If you watch the original version of this song by Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote the song back in the 50's, you can see where Angelina got the growls and a few other stylistic inspirations. She was a very astute student of music and performance even at that young age. You can see it at the very beginning of the video when she's marking up the sheet music for the music conductor, who is then shown smiling at her notes. No one knows what the future will bring. At 1 1/2 years old she said she wanted to be a singer. At 8 years old , won Norways Got Talent. I hope she is here to stay.
Tina, you are good at guessing Angelina's age, she was barely 9 when it was recorded, but not posted for a year. This was a one of a kind, she's never used the screams & growls since then. Her later recordings of this song are way toned down. I don't think you've done her 1st AGT-Champions performance of Bohemian Rhapsody. You are right, she reacted to Goodbye yellow brick road, but not that one. However, I would not hold my breath, because she was not convinced about Angelina in that one. In my opinion, they are similar in quality, changes and performances. We will find out, if she will do it 😊
@@sarlina1 Even though both were sung brilliantly, I have to give my nod to Angelina's performance of Bohemian Rhapsody over Yellow Brick Road. This is because she created a masterpiece with her transformation of BR; whereas, YBR, although more soulful, was a Sara Bareilles arrangement.
As a side note: My understanding is that she is Norwegian born of Swedish, Persian and Japanese heritage. English was not her first language.
Just go hear her remake of Bohemian Rhapsody at 13. Her I'm Feeling Good at 10 is flawless. You might want to listen to Gloomy Sunday at 7, with which she won Norway's Got Talent (she's Norwegian). Her covers of Adele and Lana de Rey are better than the originals, which were pretty great in themselves. She has no training. Singing she said when she was maybe 8, is as important as breathing to her.
She's had some training, but not intensive, I think. Some felt that one of the reasons to move to L.A. was to be with the best voice coaches, because Norway could not offer her advancement.

She has had training, I can confirm that. If she didnt get that, it would really be ignoring her amazing talent, and we all know that her family has never ignored her. On the contrary, most of their life has been following up on her. They have done what is best for her, in their own eyes, from her very first steps.

I agree with you, but.....Sometimes, maybe 1 in a mil. you have "the naturals" ( Natural control of the things she is doing). I dont know her so well if that is the case, but i am lean for that thought. Maybe she is consciously competent. But the fact is, she is young and her voice is still in developing. But what she is letting us see is fantastic. For that age (9) that is incredible.
To be honest I had the same reaction as you when I first heard this recording. I literally thought “OMG, I really hope she has a good vocal coach working with her”. I was kind of reassured by the quality of the production (and what I knew about her parents) that they would take care of her. As at least one other has pointed out, even performing this song in concert she doesn’t growl anymore like this if at all. The little high pitched roar near the beginning is replaced by a sung “wooo!” (Or something like that).
I would love to hear your reaction to “Cry Me a River” (but please, this version ua-cam.com/video/jV8HIVL2VDEn/v-deo.htmlot *). It is a performance that seems almost effortless, it has no big notes, no big moments at all. But it is, to me, simply breathtakingly beautiful, almost overwhelmingly so.
She has a version of the same song with the amazing Forsvarets Stagsmusikkorps (Staff Band of the Norwegian Armed Forces) that is worth a listen but I find the arrangement to be too harsh for this song and the mood of the mood comes across as more angry and less melancholy.

She wasn't at 9, maybe even a little short for her age. Look at her with Rosie O'Donnell on The View at age 8 and you will see how small she was. Now she's shot up to over 6 feet tall.

She can sing low and she does it on purpose she knew what she was doing. Beginning she made corrections to her sheet music version. She is following everyone’s parts and taking her lead from director. It wouldn’t make sense for a child to sing it any other way. When she is looking away she is reading the sheet music.
Actually Angelina arranged the lyrics and music. The note you see her giving to the director were instrumental changes she made. Upon interview the director stated Angelina was very polite as she called them her wishes. At this point in Angelina’s career she had taken charge of arrangements. Musicians with whom she works with affectionately refer to her as the boss. Angelina since she started singing has chosen her own songs.

Yeah, this was a one off thing. She doesn't do this song like this anymore. Don't worry, Angelina is very well looked after.

Angelina is unique. She does nothing, like the growling, all the time. What she does is pay homage to the original song and tries to sing it her way, which usually is an improvement.

Hmmm... i think you may want to check out Bohemian Rhapsody or Born to Die, just some more of her over 125 youtube videos. PRODIGY. Talk about breathing, vibrato, nuances in her voice. Most amazing I've ever heard.
I highly recommend her performance of the classic Cole Porter (1935) song, "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye". She's 11 here, and you will see the opposite of this growling type voice.
