    Fabi is on top form now. Great video analysis, as always.

    Tactics flow from a superior position they say. It looks like after Fabi got his initiative all the variations started working for him. He must have enjoyed himself immensely.
    I believe it‘s his first victory in classical chess against Magnus in a very long time. Well done! 👏

    Too cool! The Knights and Rooks are great characters for this show!

    Fantastic commentary as usual and just to prove that I watched until the end, I noticed the very unique pronounciation of Alireza's last name.

      Not unique. That’s the correct pronunciation.

    Nice to see Fabi playing well. Class is permanent, form temporary. If he can knuckle down I still think he has a shot at the World Title!

    Accurate play by Fabi. Carlsen usually finds a way to get back in the game when he's worse, but this one was a quick resignation.

    At 1:44, f4 is very odd move from white. There was good reason why in 19th century, players, including Steinitz, used to play Ne2 immediately to maintain the central pawn. But obviously when black does not care about taking on d4, white can delay that move. Later, Qc1 was an interesting move from Fabiano. I never thought of that move before, it also allows king to travel to f2 and manually castle without dropping bishop to the tactic. And 4:40, f6 is the only move for black and I have never seen black play any other move there. Opening the rook and attacking the knight is only way to fight back. Very interesting game indeed. :) Steinitz Variation is still alive! :D

    • @alexsoundias1974
      @alexsoundias1974 11 місяців тому

      I wouldn’t call f4 odd when it’s by far the most popular move at grandmaster level and has been for a long time, even if Steinitz himself did prefer to begin with Nce2.

    • @lashabezhanishvili9034
      @lashabezhanishvili9034 11 місяців тому

      @@alexsoundias1974 It is odd, because it "loses" the d4 pawn straight away. Of course it's not bad, and probably approved by the engine.

    • @alexsoundias1974
      @alexsoundias1974 11 місяців тому

      @@lashabezhanishvili9034 it's not like this is some recent trend, top players have been playing it long before engines were a thing. It 'loses' the d4 pawn but this isn't an issue, because if it was then all the lines where white never plays Nce2 and c3 wouldn't exist (when they're far and away more popular). And there are of course practical reasons for preferring those positions such as being able to play Be2 rather than g3 and Bg2, or to play O-O-O without having played c3. And the d4 square can become a great square for a knight after either cxd4 or dxc5

  • @jelielvii5709

    Actually, Carlsen played the French specifically against Caruana multiple times, with excellent results... till now :D

    12:54 why not Ba5, winning an exchange (or so I think)?

  • @ludotolhuizen7818
    @ludotolhuizen7818 11 місяців тому +1

    So maybe Carlsen should have played .Nb6-c8 instead of Ra8-c8. As Mr King nicely explains, that knight on b6 is black's problem.

    at 3:40 tather than Be7 I reckon that g5 is a possible gambit

    Masterful demonstration of how to convert a space advantage. Caruana never gave Carlsen even a hint of fresh air.

    Carlsen starting tournaments poorly is so standard now that it looks like strategy

  • @dondoctor2
    @dondoctor2 11 місяців тому

    13...Qa5 is superficial. Carlsen should try 13...fxe5 or 13...Bb4 or also 13...Qb5!? And in all cases black has a very solid position!

    • @PowerPlayChess
      @PowerPlayChess  11 місяців тому +1

      I was talking about classical chess - I should have made that clear. There aren't many top-level classical tournaments around and I can assure you, this is a very different form of chess to blitz and rapid!

  • @roqsteady5290
    @roqsteady5290 11 місяців тому

    Maybe Carlsen has taken his eye off the ball a bit, due to having little more to achieve. That was always going to be the risk of resigning the world championship title.

  • @michaelblankenau3129

    Don’t really see how Caruana had a space advantage . Seemed more like Carlsens Queen and knight were poorly placed .

    • @PowerPlayChess
      @PowerPlayChess  11 місяців тому

      The pawns on d4 and f4 prevent the pawn on e6 from moving which (I would say) gives White a space advantage. It is certainly easier for White to manoeuvre than Black.

      Naa. When I said that, before suggesting 18...Na8, you'll find that the computer doesn't like the move very much - although redeploying the knight is high on my list of priorities, and, to my eyes, it does feel quite natural. When the computer suggests something extraordinary (as it did later on) I am usually careful to give credit - but I also let you know whether it's a 'human' move or not.
