In Italy we have a lot of dialects (that are sadly dying out as young people don't use them anymore) and a lot of different accents, so it used to be so that between different regions people didn't speak the same language, but then with the cultural unification that led to the creation of Italy people had a common language and the main difference was really just the accents (which are extremely different between very far apart regions but not so much that you can't understand anything, it just requires an additional effort).
For example I am from Napoli and Firenze : one has a dialect that sounds close to Portuguese to the point where I can understand conversations between my Portuguese/Brazilian friends, and the other sounds nothing like it, as it is the one that was would then evolve to become the Italian language, and I'm sure you all know that Italian and Portuguese are not the same language

It's not so much that we don't understand each other, we all speak standard italian, and our dialect's accent seeps into the language, what most italians don't understand is other dialects, but when speaking italian we have no issues

Fun fact about Italy and expecially where i live:
Other than dialects, there are also proper languages, like Sardo from Sardegna and Friulano from Friuli Venezia Giulia, which are totally incomprehensible from italians outside those regions since they barely resemble the italian language

Its not that we can't understand each other. We all speak italian and understand each other. However if you compare regional languages (called dialetti) they are different from north to south.

I find it funny how there's elitism in chess. Given how chess works. Most casual players are so bad, compared to club players. They (including me) are not even playing the same game. They are playing with alphabet blocks. Club players get crushed by masters ( except for the few master level club players.) IMs crush masters. etc. Very stratified. My point is that most chess players probably look like newbs to the top 1%. And the vast majority of the top 1% are nowhere near super GM level, and won't win a single game against a super GM. So...I allow super GMs to look down at the rest of us, there's less than 50 of them I think? Everyone else? Does it make sense for them to lord over the lesser players, knowing they can't hang with the best, and except for some 5000 super GMs, GMs and IMs, everyone else is a patzer for the most part :)

I didn't know some Italians can't understand each other (like Sicily being the Swiss German of Italian) until I had Italian colleagues and they told me that. The differences are much bigger than in US English North/South. There was some TV series that had to be subtitled Italian for Italian viewers... crazy.

I watched some of the streams, since she was playing in Italy (Sardinia by the way, as good as it gets), and I've only seen her playing against quite young players. I wonder if that because Italy chess scene is younger than other countries? Or perhaps I just watched those games against young players, but she then played against some nonnas, or nonnos as well.

I checked it, the group was Group B, which were those under 2000 rating. Not to say anything against her performance.
I did see another video clip where Alexandra beat Andrea 3-2 in a one on one competition. Andrea must have played very well to get a 2 against Alexandra, who is a great player. Alexandra probably makes more taking money in poker taking money from Senator Cruz, and their UA-cam account than Chess.
