Start to focus on scales and their relation to chords. The most common one is major or minor pentatonic scale. You will learn to see that the shape of the chords are related to the scale.
This is such a valuable video. As someone who was 'classically trained' this really helped me to start improvising. The way you broke down the steps made so much sense! Thank you for making these wonderful videos available to everyone
I can’t explain how great this video was, I’m not even joking it makes me want to cry, because I know there are other people out there who feel the same way, BUT I JUST WANNA SAY PIANO IS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL THING
It is so beautiful!! And being able to play your heart out is exactly why I’m here learning how to. This is a year old so I hope you’ve made ton of progress:)
This has been an issue for me. I can come up with solo pieces in my head; however, when I would play them out on the piano, I would miss notes that were in my head and hit the wrong ones. This always threw me off. This technique seems to be a way to improve this. Very much appreciated!
i always thought i couldn't improvise because i've had a hard time visualizing scales and memorizing them... your approach made me feel like i've been wrong this entire time, i can actually improvise and because of that i can't thank you enough
I teach voice and piano. What you have shared is so appreciated and a great suggestion. The part about singing what you wish to play is something I share with my voice students. But for some reason, I never followed that advise regarding my piano playing, or for that matter, teaching it this way. Thank you so much for the shift. I do appreciate all of your lessons.
I am thai beginner on piano, really thank you for all free lessons by the barrierof language, I sometimes dont understand your message. But I will try to repeat to practice as your advice. Thank you so much, you are one of my piano teachers 😊
MangoldProject how you practice your ear? i have played guitar for two years now and i still can't arrange nything. i think piano and guitar are same. any suggestion?
actually it's really simple. but it takes a lot of practice .. take any song and try to imitate it's melody lines on guitar .. this simple but effective technique helped me master that technique as Mr asaaf said
Actually, people will naturally sing in pentatonic scales. Majority of old folk music are pentatonic tunes, all around the world. Then, this being about jazz, you'd add the blue notes. Essentially, knowing these theory "tricks" will help in translating the melody in your head into notes, you'll make less mistakes and the mistakes you do make will sound more acceptable within the constraints of the piece.
This lesson is actually me ask for a help from you.. I wish to know about your learning path from where you began to this level of playing... like when and where you started your learning and what were the exercises and lessons you did to make yourself become a awesome musician like this.. if you could make a video on this..it will be great help for someone like me who is struggling to get better at piano... Thanks in advance..
This topic about musicians singing on top of their playing it is very interesting! I am a drummer in love of John Bonham and when you hear an isolated track you can hear him screaming!!!
Great advice if you know how to distinguish notes simply through audio queues, but unfortunately this just didn’t work for me. I don’t perfectly know what each note sounds like so when humming a tune I have no idea how to convert that into notes on a keyboard, even after drilling scales & chords into my skull for 3 years. Good video but you’re expected to be able to hear notes beforehand.
:D Nice take and satire on the "cliche click bait" piano lessons video titles we found on youtube: "...Honest! No dirty tricks. Well, it's going to take me 8 minutes, it's going to take you much longer ;)...." Great video, thank you!
Hmm start by playing chords in C major, since it's all white keys, and start pressing on notes until what you sing and what you hear are the same. Just practise and practise. Another thing you could do would be to train your ear, like listen to videos that play notes and ask you to identify them, you'll easily be able to play them, as you slowly train your ear. Even I get stuck with this however after playing for some years, I can get a gist of what the keys might be playing which notes.
Would love to hear some more examples of you improvising to chords :) Love the video, this is a great idea even when composing not on the fly and you're trying to find a melody.
I'm absolutely loving your videos because they are structured in a way that makes good sense to me. I have a question about improvisation that you did not mention. When a person does a solo/improvisation in a band, does the improvisation have to be connected or sound in any way like the original melody when it is your turn to improvise within the band? Or do you just have to use some of the same chord progressions of the original melody? I hope this makes sense.
Great tips and thank you. However, what is your philosophy of doing an improv solo over a jazz standard as opposed to just a made up chord progression? In that situation you are playing specific chords in the left hand (usually) so how do you develop the right hand hand solo and especially runs in the right hand without sounding to scale like?
This video's philosophy is directly applicable to jazz standards. Learn to improvise singing, and then play what you sing. This will ensure you're not adhering to scales to licks or muscle-memory.
0:31 Am i the only one, who heard "Your reality" from DDLC? (I was watching that yesterday, so it wouldn't surprise me lol) Also great tutorial. I felt like a better pianist then before.
My problem is I dont know what scale is it going to be use on that specific song .so I just put what melody ive singing in my mind to guitar.I dont know if the scale is right but it sound good. Its my biggest problem.not all songs I can improvise.what should I do?follow my feel for the melody .i dont know what scale. Or should I learn the scale?
This whole point of this video is that the best thing you can possibly do is follow your singing/composition, not a particular scale. If you want to learn more about scales and chords then try my "Jazz Piano for Absolute Beginners" series here on UA-cam.
I know you put in the video that "composing on the spot" is the magic in improvisation and that the piano part is just a technicality, but do you happen to have tips on how to bring your singing onto the piano without messing up?
I’m absolutely not classically trained. You probably shouldn’t listen to this if you have any sort of proficiency with the piano, but using these couple rules I have found people asking “what song is that?” even though I’ve just been improving. 1: one hand plays lower notes, other hand plays higher notes. 2. Lower notes are “chords.” And by chords, I mean you play keys at the same time and hold them there for a long time. Rule of thumb, never play keys that are next to each other. That, I’ve found, naturally makes a positive sounding chord. 3. The higher hand goes utterly ham, but only playing single notes. Like, one key then rapidly switch to the next and do this like 6/a dozen times. You do this in between the times you hit the lower chords 4: repeat. If you have more piano knowledge, you can probably ensure that you only play happy sounding chords. Sorry if I’ve made an absolute mockery of pianocraft 😔
Yes. Pick a "real book" song, memorize the left hand, and then focus on the right hand improvisation. With time, you will learn how to automatically pick left hand chord voicings that sound pleasing.

How do you know what keys to play of the song you sang?
You need to train your ear to be able to take any melody you hear and translate it into notes.

Yes, this approach works for any instrument. Improvisation happens in your head, not at your fingertips.
Exactly! My Dad (RIP) used to say that apart from the head, we've got to trust our ears.
