*Great tutorial Sir.For me as a beginner, one of the greatest challengers in playing the piano has been knowing what chords to match with a melody, rather than just playing robotically from sheet music. With your video, I am now on my way, step by step, to becoming a great composer. Thanks a million.*
Sir, your video gave me chills in my body and all of a sudden something clicked in my brain. It's the sound of a Lamp click. And now, I will explain what I am talking about. Your video taught me something very very important and made me view music and composition much differently. Music is a like a construction field with many tools to build a song. A song that was originally just a single note and constructed according to a construction plan. You slightly add notes, try notes, remove notes, .. etc until you create your melody. The next phase is to add, try, or remove the simplest triad chords to make sure they fits well with the melody according to your design of the time signature of the song. Next phase is to re-arrange your chords by using inversions or whatever in order to sound more coloured. Then bring in your song structure to indicate the number of verses, chorus, bridge, ..etc and model it on the given harmonization that we've just created. Voila !! You got your own song. Honestly, thank you very much.
+MangoldProject Truly Amazing! I rarely comment, but this is so good. Will you ever have time to show us how two melodies running together can be fitted with chords? Or, after following your instructions to create a chord progression to the first melody, how can a secondary melody, or maybe a bass riff, be fitted in? What are dos and donts? How much dissonance is acceptable? Still, this video is so clear that it almost answers the question already. Keep it up! I have some revising to do now, to see whether I have followed your principles.
Good tips! To make a long story short, look at the melodic note you’re playing on your right hand on the main beat or impulses in the melody and play the bass note that is 1, 3, or 5 intervals BELOW the melodic note. This rule is a bit easier to mentally execute as opposed to finding the triad chords that contain the melodic note. As for the chord progressions (asked in one of the viewer comments), there is no need to memorize the progressions because they naturally come about and arise from simply responding to whatever notes are played in the melody using the above rule. :-)
Just super video. An amazing concept: start simple, then build from there. Why didn't I think of that ?? Or , better yet, why didn't my teachers suggest that ????So much for the Royal Conservatory of Music for Canada!!!(They really taught me now to hate the piano, Now ManGold is teaching me how to love the piano.Thank you, Thank you Sir. !
Thank you for this tutorial - excellently done. Reharmonization is a big missing link in my playing. Now I should start sounding richer in my chord progressions. Thanks to you.
These days....nobdy will try to say like this... And Sir, you highly deserve appreciation.... May God The Almighty bless... Jesus, what a toughness to find chords for a desired song..... And when hearing recorded songs or MIDIs ....hhhaaaahhh... How nicely it blends......and Im nowhere to understand it... And finally, to deeply say, Music making is an art, not meant for fools (like me.....haa..haa) Too gud Sir, your presentation ... Really liked it...
I found a very interesting reharmonization. Since there's no B in the melody (nor Bb) we can assume that the melody is actually in F major (or C mixolydian). But, since the melody starts on a G, which is the 2nd degree of F major, I found out it's not a very nice starting note, so I made a modulation: the harmony starts in A minor (which have the same notes of C major) but ends in F major with a bunch of secondary dominants in between. It ended being like this: | Am7 / Em7 / | Bm7(b5) / E7 / | Am7 / | D7 / | G7 C7 F / | It came out with a very interesting flavour
You definitely need to offer your lessons for sale but in an organized structure. Your practical approach is hands down the most effective way of taking me from a beginner to an intermediary player. The concepts are so insightful and let me know where I can take my playing. Since my goal is to harmonize like Alicia Keys.
I would like to take private lessons by you through zoom since you are not living near me. Pls let me know if you give private lessons. Thank you! You are the best of best teacher!
In short, look at the melodic note you’re playing on your right hand on the main beat or impulses in the melody and play the bass note that is 1, 3, or 5 intervals BELOW the melodic note. Then build the chord from the bass note by playing the notes at 1-3-5-8 above the bass note. This rule is a bit easier to mentally execute as opposed to finding the triad chords that contain the melodic note.
Which bass notes are you playing to execute the 5-2-1? It bass notes that make the 5-2-1 at 7 minutes into the video weren’t clearly identified or was confusing. Were the first two bass notes played with the left hand pinky and the last one with the left hand thumb?
Chord tones and non chord tones are what we need to know about and of course the ear is a determining factor here and the ability to hear what is in the bass all the way to the top note in the melody line. However, there are other ways of harmonizing melodies that use other means rather than triads. As if the triad were the penultimate thing in music which is only part of the dilemma of what to use to harmonize a melody. You used a functional diatonic solution and of course there are solutions about what you want to use but where does it come from and where its going is dependent on certain rules of harmony and counterpoint. Counterpoint is not mentioned at all in most of the videos I have seen. So what would we do otherwise? What what we do otherwise. Peter
This was good for me to watch and learn. Maybe you will do more on which chord to play when Im playing improvising on right hand simple chords. This lesson touch on this alot.
THis what baffles me about music theory in general and how music works . 02:30 Your holding the c major chord , until the you hit the note ....and something sounds a bit off . I totally agree with you on that ,yet the D could still be part of the c major chord in the form off and add 2 or c sus 2
The idea is to *first* find the *most basic* chord that fits, using Tonic, Sub-dominant, or Dominant. In the key of C, you could chose C, F, or G (or G7). *After* that, you would add or substitute chords as needed.
Hi! I love the way you explain things, probably the best among the piano teachers online. I have a request, if you can please do a video on how to accompany on piano while singing a song. I know it's a very basic thing, but not able to find much on this part. I hope you will guide me on this. Thanks in advance. :)
Thanks Rohit. It's actually a very complex question without a simple answer. A lot of my videos talk precisely about that - take a stroll through my channel :)
Thanks Hank. Not anything specific, really - music is a personal undertaking. This is a question only you can answer ... in terms of educational videos, I don't really have anything I use or view. I suggest you transcribe solos or pieces you enjoy from pianists you value.
Very useful Sir, thanks for this post. Please do upload a tutorial on how to figure what in one go which notes to play while playing melody. Mistakingly if we step on a wrong key then it sounds odd especially embarassing during a live performance.
No no, for example; if we take a particular song in which two three chords are used. How to figure out the exact lead notes or keys which are to be used in that particular melody to be played with right hand. Hope u got it Sir ☺
The bass note in the chord tells you what key you are playing in at the time. The scale in that given key determines which notes can be played on the right hand. Any notes you hit that are in the given scale will sound good, even if the note diverts from the main melody.
hi nice videos I find it very interesting by ur videos I feel I can learn many things.....I have a question for you....can u please make a video on scale practice rather than playing up the piano and down the piano....something like playing the scales like melodically
So detailed but something i don't get is, how we choose the order of chord to be played like C, A, F, or maybe F,C,A. And another thing when the chord can be played as pattern (rythmic) or as single or octave notes?
My question refers to THE ORDER i mean which chord its played first then second and so on. As for the second question when the chords can be played in rythmic way or pattern ???
A similar approach is to look at the melodic note you’re playing on your right hand on the main beat or impulses in the melody and play the bass note that is 1, 3, or 5 intervals BELOW the melodic note. Thank you for these tips. Question. You used the 2-5-1 progression to play the 2 chord before the 5 chord and it worked. Also the 6-2-5 (part of the 6-2-5-1) progression worked. Are these the standard progressions to determine passing chords for all songs? For example if I wanted to find a chord that leads up to the 2 chord in a song will the 6 chord always work? And if so is there a chord that leads up to the 6 chord?
There is no single answer, but trying the 6 before the 2 is definitely one of the first things you'd go for. Sometimes you want the opposite - something "odd" that doesn't sound like a textbook example, so you'd go for some unexpected chord. There are no rules, only suggestions.
This is a great video!! Thank you for choosing a Classic as I have learned so much and I will perfect this by reviewing it and adding the theory to other key signatures in order to really make it my own! I agree with you as it sounds really good. So, theoretically when connecting between the Tonic and the Dominant chords we can use: ii V I or ii V-seven I or vi ii V I or vi ii V-seven I-right? May I also ask exactly how can we learn to accurately and confidently recognize passing notes and passing chords and how do they affect the naming of the chord progressions? Are the Reharmonization chords passing chords? I am excited to learn Harmonization and Reharmonization with you-thank you for being here on youtube:) I am very excited to see the next video. This is so much better than children's nursery rhymes-LOL Thank you:)
helo Sir, i love to play piano but its geting hard i cant find how to start my practice i know major minior scale, chords intervals scale degree my hands not geting coordination how to i start my practice routine please kindly help me. sincerely Prashanth thank you

Malnad discovery there’s a few ways but it really doesn’t matter. 1: what chord does it resolve on? Play the song but for the last chord play either C maj triad or A min triad. One of them will sound right. That is the tonic. 2: does it sound happy or sad? Bright or dark? If it’s bright and happy, it’s major, if it’s sad and dark, it’s minor. 3: what chord does it start on? A lot of songs start on the tonic, if it starts on c maj, odds are it’s c maj.
Thank you for this simple approach. I have asked 2 people this week for the simplest way to play the left hand. I want to learn some simple church choruses because I got frustrated and have put them aside. I've just been working on music with notes and nothing that is just chords. And it's not church music. I want to try the church choruses again. :)

Your topics, your teaching style, and your language resonate with me. In-other-words, you make sense of what is hard for many of us.
imo this is the most useful lesson for post-beginners, hands down
Thanks Nyanko :)
simple yet powerful man.
for the nextlevel things like jazz and other extended chords, it's still hard to figure out those chords over melody.
This video is the answer to a question that I had for many years, no one was able to answer it in such a clear way. I'm impressed.
Great! Glad to know that.
This is my favorite piano channel on youtube.
Thank you. I like your avatar.
Lol your profilr
I've been watching your videos for about a year and have seen a huge improvement in my playing and theoretical understanding. Keep up the great work.
This is probably my most desperate and most urgent instrumental need today. Can’t wait.
I swear this is my favorite piano channel
Hey Assaf, your tutorials are awesome. And the way you communicate your concepts and ideas are just flawless. Thank you so so much for these videos.
Thanks Agbaje, that's very nice of you to say :)

Any specific requests? Would you like to see more specifically on harmonizing a melody?
Yeah of course. Thanks sir!
What a great easy to follow video. Thank you.
I found a very interesting reharmonization. Since there's no B in the melody (nor Bb) we can assume that the melody is actually in F major (or C mixolydian). I want to know what is the basic idea behind choosing the right chord for the melody and when do I play each chord with the melody notes?
In short, look at the melodic note you’re playing on your right hand on the main beat or impulses in the melody and play the bass note that is 1, 3, or 5 intervals BELOW the melodic note. Good video! I would love to see more details and examples. Perhaps one on finding spots for "breaking out" of the natural harmonization?
What is the "natural harmonization", though?
What you showed is pretty smooth in my ears (and a great base), but I often struggle to add more "spice". Keep up your good work!
Very nice!

how to know that its C major or A minor
Malnad discovery there’s a few ways but it really doesn’t matter. 1: what chord does it resolve on? Play the song but for the last chord play either C maj triad or A min triad. One of them will sound right. That is the tonic. 2: does it sound happy or sad? Bright or dark? If it’s bright and happy, it’s major, if it’s sad and dark, it’s minor. 3: what chord does it start on? A lot of songs start on the tonic, if it starts on c maj, odds are it’s c maj.

The "more advanced" one would be about reharmonization. I have a few of those (look for "Chord Substitutions" on my channel).
