Permit an additional question I don’t see asked on any whiskey channel. What are the qualifications for publicly evaluating whiskeys? Some channels seem to fly by the seat of their pants, doing entertainment as they go. You seem to follow a set of criteria and structure, similar to beer judges- color, viscosity, smell, mouthfeel, taste, etc. I appreciate this as it is still subjective but lends to a more informed listener and buyer. Did you go through a training or school? Kudos for putting it a scientific, reliable approach. I had some beer judge training and can appreciate the development of tasting attributes and the attainment of a level of sophistication.
I don't have any formal training. I just try to structure my channel to be more concise and formatted so I don't get off track (unless my sister is joining me). I'll leave the comedy and shenanigans to other channels. I think my systematic approach to the channel also stems from me being a science teacher. Hopefully this gives you an idea of what you were asking. Cheers!
They really are no qualifications. If you’re able to articulate your thoughts on noses and taste, you can start your own whiskey tube channel. Just try to keep your scoring simple.
Thank you kind sir. You are the ONLY reviewer who has confirmed that Sagamore ryes have a dill note. I can't stand that dill seed note in ryes. I bought the Sag double oaked and detected the dill note on that one which has made me hesitant to buy any other Sagamores. Now I can confidently cross this brand off my list.
The Sagamore nine year I just missed out on at Total Wine so I’m hoping that they’ll get it in again right before Christmas. I never had the eight year because it was kind of expensive in my area.
Hi, so I love the double oaked version. I have 2 store picks, both 7 year versions but 2 different barrels. One that I have open is really good. I also have a couple bottles of ghe sherry finished and the Manhattan finished versions but haven't cracked them open yet. I have yet to see the 8 or 9 year olds in my area of eastern pa or in new jersey so far.
Good to know. I was thinking as I was doing the video if I was really aware that Sagamore was something to be on the lookout for. So I might have seen the 8 in my area and didn't know to get it. I think what it came out I was just getting into whiskey.
I’m in Bakersfield California and my local store carries a few different offerings. They have a store pick that’s really nice. I really enjoy the PX Sherry finished the most. I hear the new bottle in bond that’s 100% their own is also very nice. Cheers!
I'm very interested in tasting their own stuff. In a way I hope it's different from the stuff they are using now. But I'm also worried it will be too different than we are used to. Did that make sense?
Ahhhhh seen the thumbnail I'm going to have to wait till Saturday to watch this... I ordered the Sagamore 9yr last week it's sitting at the post office for me to pick up and I can't get there till Saturday 😢 we were sopse to have this bottle at a Sagamore tasting I went to a couple of weeks ago but it got stuck at customs so didn't get to try it then, but we did try the Sherry finsh, White Wine finish and the Sagamore Manhattan bottles ... Cheers Peter I'll have a drink along with this on Saturday 🥃🥃🥃
@whiskeyisajourney So picked it this morning popped it love it very very nice, spicy sweet delicious... So apparently there is a difference in their labels, at the Sagamore tasting we had 2 guys from Sagamore on a live stream and apparently the labels that just say Sagamore is MgP and the ones that are Sagamore Spirit is Distilled by them... I could have backwards it was a tasting I was maybe 6 drams deep but I found that interesting... as was the Sagamore Manhattan bottle and their Wine finsh and Sherry finsh I would definitely recommend hunting them out Peter... Cheers 🥃🥃🥃
Love the 8 year and picked up 2 of the 9 years at the distillery when the week they released and it is also fantastic but it is different from the 8 year. The 8 year won on a blind but the 9 was just cracked so I plan on redoing it in a few months (traveling). Both are beautiful ryes and worth having. I see the 9 getting even better in the future. The Sagamore DO, Cask Strength, Sherry, Port, Rum and BiBs are must have bottles. Need to pick up the new 7 year BiBs still. Got lucky found a TW that had the fantastic Sagamore Rum cask rye on clearance for $30 below msrp. Bought 6 of them.
Nice review. Never tried the 8 year but I have their Double Oaked, Store Pick, 6 Year BIB, & Sherry Finish. I think the double oaked is my least favorite. I love the 6 year BIB. The Sherry finish is a bit sweet for me and the store pick is a little youthful/hot but it has great flavor. Looking forward to the 7 year BIB. I'll prob pick this up if I see it.
have only had two Sagamores. One was the double oak, which i didnt care for and gave it away. The second was the tequila finished, which i kept but could’ve used more tequila influence.
@ its been awhile, but from what i can remember it didnt have enough rye flavor for me. I gave it to someone who doesnt care for ryes, and he liked it.
I'm pretty sure TW doesn't do any actual tasting & selecting for their single barrels or almost never due. They just have the distilleries send them a barrel with the TW name on it. It's more profitable to do it that way, than to waste time & pay people to taste & select a barrel when it adds no value. The bottles will sell if people believe it's a store pick. Costco does the same thing. You can usually know by the label/neck tag, etc. If it states "selected by 'distilleries name' for 'store name'", it's NOT a pick. If it states "selected by 'store name'", it IS a pick.
395/500 is an interesting score. There’s TONS of room above 395, but you seem to like everything about it. What would have tipped the scales into the 400’s? Sagamore at my Total Wine is usually just store picks. I have seen some of the less popular ones at TW, like the Rum Finish. In Oregon, which is close to me, I can find the Sherry Finish and sometimes the double oak. Everything else I have to get online.
Regarding Total Wine store pics I think they can be hit or miss. Sometimes more miss. My conspiracy theory is that their tasting panel wants to find something that is off profile from the core line of a distillery. I had a 1792 full proof Total Wine store pick from 2019 that was not to my liking but then a different store pick was kind of sweet.
The Sagamore 8-year last year was phenomenal. Excited to try this one.
That was the consensus of most people. I think this one has a different profile but is good despite the difference.

I am sensitive to dill so maybe I am in the minority.

I wish I still has some of the sample I got from Josh to compare.
@@whiskeyisajourney maybe you can trade Josh and Aaron a sample and they can send you the Sagamore eight year back?
Nice review! I really enjoy all the Sagamore offerings. I think that I prefer the 8yr over the 9yr offering. Cheers!
I need to get my hands on another sample of the 8 to compare.

Great video! Regards from México!
Thanks! Cheers!
It's been my experience that Total Wines store picks cost more and are usually worse in flavor than a distillery's regular release.
That has been my experience as well. We are on the same page. Cheers!
Have you had any TW single barrels of JD Brl Prf Rye or bourbon?
Would guess they would just be a standard shelfer with their name on the neck tag.
Thanks
Got you in for another one.
Thanks!
I appreciate the support. You are in for 1. Best of luck.

One of my favorite whiskey channels! 🙌🏻
Thanks! I really appreciate that. Best of luck and you are in for 1 in December.
Great video. I have not tried the 9 year, but I've gotten a few bottles of their cask strength. It is my favorite from them so far
There is something about cask strength whiskey that brings out flavors you didn't typically get at lower proofs. Cheers!

Cool. Check back in and let me know what you think of it. Cheers!

I think I see a first Friday flight fight on the horizon for me with Sagamore.
I’m also from the Phoenix area. Cheers
Nice. What area?
Always learn a lot from this channel
I'm glad you are finding it useful. I appreciate the feedback. Cheers!
Your subs are looking good 😊
Thanks! Onward and upward.
This Sagamore Rye 9 has been a hot topic on the UA-cam lately. I'll keep an out (luv the ryes). thanks Peter, cheers!
I think if it had less spice to balance with the low sweetness I think I would be in the 4-4.5 range. It is certainly bringing the spice. Cheers!
I thought the 9yr was really good I never had the 8yr to compare
I enjoyed this one. Although, I wish it was either a little less spice forward or it had more sweetness. I felt it was a little unbalanced.
The sherry is on my list to try. I'm a fan of sherry so I hope I end up liking it. Cheers!
have only had two Sagamores. One was the double oak, which i didnt care for and gave it away. The second was the tequila finished, which i kept but could’ve used more tequila influence.
Could you pin point why you didn't like the Double Oak?
@ its been awhile, but from what i can remember it didnt have enough rye flavor for me. I gave it to someone who doesnt care for ryes, and he liked it.
Are you doing a top 5 list of Ryes for 2024? Is this making it?
This will definitely be in the running.

It would be cool to go on a barrel pick at some point. The process looks like it would be a fun experience.
Thanks!
I appreciate the support. I've got you done for 2 in December. Good luck!
Thanks!
Best of luck. You are down for 1 in December.
