Your philosophy on freedom seems to mesh completely with mine. I can't justify supporting my rights while denying the rights of others. I've enjoyed your content for a few years and have learned from you although I am decades older than you. To back that up, I just visited Patreon to sign up as a patron. Thank you, Karl for the work that you do. Mike
Hearing your opinion on trapdoor makes me desperately want to see a brutality match restricted to single-shot black powder variants. I think competition with trapdoor Springfields, Martini Henrys, Remington rolling-blocks, etcetera, would be AWESOME!
I've been watching this channel for years, and always wondered why I like Karl and his content. Now I know. Love for Amiga and salmiakki. I still have my Amiga 500, and tested it out last christmas (which is kind of a tradition for me) and it still works. Most of the discs have sadly died though, so I can't do much with it, but it works! They really knew how to make stuff last in the ye olde days.
I watch this channel not particularly for the firearms content but because Karl talks informative sense in an understandable fashion with no side or shade thrown.
I may get some flak from this but as someone who is more left leaning and progressive but supports gun rights it is really nice to hear from someone in the gun community who is not bashing everyone else. Thank you!
So years back my boss told me a story about when he was the acting RO at some action pistol competition. Long story short, a competitor was using a 45 auto and the steel target was dimpled by rifle fire so much that a 230 grain slug rebounded and hit right on the schlong hard enough to break skin. He crumpled up and hit the ground so fast at first they thought he was dead.
Just to note: Vercingetorix was the king of the Gauls who was defeated by Julius Caesar's armies in 52 BC. Given that he was beheaded (or strangled; sources differ) in 46 BC as part of Caesar's triumph when he returned to Rome, it's a little surprising that he's on Patreon now. The historians of antiquity couldn't agree on how to pronounce his name either (Plutarch called him "Vergentorix"), so you're in good company. :)
Range adjusted optics are the primary thing that interest me in the future of optics. Those already exist but they're still at a point where they're price is higher than the benefits it grants. As they become more common they'll get more practical and affordable.
That’s super interesting question about the different requests on the different platforms, but I can totally see how those would differ, man that’s interesting.
Red Baron was the most influential game of my life. The historical books that came with it sucked me in and I've been a WWI aviation nut since. It determined my college major. I literally worked for Fokker (it still exists). I'm so grateful that they included all those reference books. Red Baron II was even better with proper bound softbacks. I love it when games provide an opportunity to learn about things you might not otherwise run across, e.g. the codex entries of Battlefield 1 hooked me and then my passion expanded to the ground and I started a WWI firearm "collection", hah.
This will probably get lost in the comments, but Karl, regarding Question 2, I would recommend taking a look into the $22.4B Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS) contract Microsoft just closed with the Army. It's basically what you're talking about - an AR headset loaded with features (including optional NVDs) that's ultimately supposed to help soldiers point and shoot at targets with floating reticles like in the video games.
Burris has some scopes that do it out now I haven't shot them yet since they're still really expensive related they have some windage stuff in them too.
A 6.5 grendel wwsd wouldn't need anything other than a barrel change/bolt and the mags are ar15 profile compatible. It wouldn't really have any of those issues you're understandably hesitant about. Were you thinking 6.5 creedmore?
I have an ATN scope. The best use I've found for it has been; putting it on a tripod, linking it to a Tablet/phone, and using it as a spotting scope that can record shots. As a scope, it leaves a lot to be desired where weight, reticle, ease/speed of adjustment is concerned. The night mode is rather nice though.
I work at a hemp lab in ky, im always wary of getting pulled over with my carry gun, because of how the laws are. Its ridiculous that i should be scared of getting a felony and gun taken, because i smell like weed and might have a gram
On the carry handle optics mount question, I think he was asking about modifying the carry handles forward portion to a rail but otherwise keeping the sights as is. Which was also done on commercially on some early match/varmint models of AR.
why did you answer 100% of the questions and just leave your co-host sitting there staring out into the desert? poor fella was so stunned he barely moved the whole show :(
My electrical teacher brought an Amiga to school one day, back when I went to school. She also brought an NES, Super Nintendo, and Commodore 64. We were all encouraged to bring old consoles and computers to school that week. It was really cool to see how drastically the technologies have developed over just a couple of decades. It was also really fun to get to play all those old video games in school.
I was always under the impression that slamfire was mostly for market hunters, where simply throwing as much lead in the air as fast as possible ensures the most dead birds.
@@Samplehorse actually, I don’t know if you ever tried it, but San Pellegrino sparkling mineral water, which I saw multiple times when visiting the US, is produced in Italy, 20 miles or so from where I live.
I would be very interested in a comparison on the clock between a schonfield or any other top break Smith & Wesson and a modern, or at least more modern, swing out cylinder S&W (or any other manufacturer of course)
On the Digital Sights and integration into a AR headset, Steiner produces a sight that can be linked, via a hud modual for their LPNVG, to a set of night vision goggles.
I saw in a video for Firearms blog, they were interviewing some developers from Sig talk about their MG68 and they mentioned that one of the requirements in the Army competition is the addition of a powered rail, Sig has a battery in the stock and they put power contacts in their 1-6 scope (with a battery backup on the scope itself). That leads me to believe that Sig will put out a powered rail for their red dots and electronic stuff one day.
Fun fact: The "gooseneck" rail is still utilized by many Israeli Defense Force (IDF) brigades who still use CAR-15s and other older AR variants with the fixed receiver carry handle.
Really enjoyed the answer on favorite finnish cols bewerage, more so because it was a bit unexpected. Even though it comes in liquid form and is best served cold, I have never though Salmiakki as a cold bewerage (beer, cider, etc) but as an chilled shot. I did chuckle a little because I had an metal image of Karl drinking Salmiakki as if it was long drink. It did involve torn shirts, animalistic roaring, destroyed terrace furniture and passing out :D But goid answer! And Salmiakki is good stuff (in small doses)!
20+ years ago (486 and Pentium era) I found a copy of Red Baron and loaded it on my son's computer. It appeared to be linked to the bus or processor multiplier timing and ran at several times the original speed. It was hilarious to see those wireframe biplanes zooming around at high speed!
I have the Techsight for the SKS (the elevation adjustable one). I was trying to make a “poor man’s Garand”, but in the end I should have taken all that money I spent and bought an M1 from the CMP. The sight itself gives you repeatable clicks, and for target shooting I greatly prefer the aperture over the notch sights. However... the first “complication” that I ran into with Techsights is that you need to extend the length of pull or else you’ll be whacked in the eye pro with every shot. I got a Timbersmith stock for this reason, and still needed to add a 2” spacer. Second is that now you’ll need a screwdriver to tear down your rifle for cleaning, since the bolt that attaches the sight replaced the disassembly lever. Also, the sight isn’t truly “return to zero”. It holds up well but over time it will get wobbly and you’ll have to retighten the set screws. Personally, I feel the SKS is best left alone and accepted for its shortcomings. I’ve done all I described plus bedding the stock and I still get no better than ~5moa out of the thing. I’m gonna try reloading some x39, if that doesn’t work I’ll just have a “fun gun” for shiggles, plus the bayonet looks bad ass. Lest you think Techsights as a company is a solution looking for a problem, I also have their product on my Marlin 60 and absolutely adore them. They’re pretty BA on the Ruger 10/22 as well.
Always love to hear Karl talk frankly about the problems with toxicity in the gun community as well as the world in general. I'd hate a world without a variety of people and opinions, even ones I disagree with.
I always thought of that slam fire feature as being a last ditch thing like the enemies coming in to the trench your back is up against the wall and you just slam fire that thing and hope for the best
I would assume that the slamfire "feature" of some early pump shotgun designs is just a quirk of the out of battery safety implementation in those guns. They just happened to use an autosear, instead of a firing pin block or whatever, I think some used both. I doubt the intent was to use it for rapid fire, and frankly doing so kinda takes a link out the safety chain in a gun that's already quite possibly worn loose enough to be hazardous to begin with.
I'm glad you had such a visceral reaction and strong response to that inane awful question about "controlling anti-gunners". What an awful and irresponsible way of thinking. I much prefer the live and let live philosophy, which you seem to espouse. Not only that but any other reaction to it would have really undermined your earlier answers to the questions about gun culture within the context of our broader culture. I don't own a gun or plan to own a gun but I find your channel (and ForgottenWeapons) to be both interesting, informative historically and fun content. keep it up!
I've built the WWSD inspired DMR in 556 and it still balances well and feels much better to use than other AR15 platform DMRs I've used, its currently in service with a local county sheriffs deputy. i plan to build a second DMR for myself in 224 Valkyrie this fall.
Standard s333 news! Their website now blames ammo companies for poor quality control because of course they are blameless for their own. The also now offer a refurbishment service for the low, low price of $75 plus s&h and the cost of any replacement parts!
About the 7.5 FK reloading... The projectile of .30 Carbine has the same dimensions as the 7.5 FK projectile. I would like to know if it is possible to load .30 Carbine projectiles on 7.5 FK brass...
Someone has to do it :D Vercingetorix, pronounced Ver-sing-get-orix, it's the name of a tribal leader of the Gauls who led the final (unsuccessful) gaulic resistance against caeser.
ver-kin-GET-eriks NativLang has a wonderful short about actual period Latin accents. Caesar's "Vini, vidi, vici" sounded a lot like the Grand Nagus of the Ferengi saying "weenie, weedy, wiki."
Also an interesting and rather tragic story. Anyone reading this that is unfamiliar with it, look it up. It's kind of like an ancient version of one of Karl's old west vignettes.
@@thatmckenzie True I guess, but almost nobody pronounced latin correctly. Like caeser itself for instance, the latin pronunciation is the same as the german Kaiser (thats where the german title actually comes from). People pronounce latin a certain way nowadays and Vercingetorix is one of those that has a current pronunciation that differs from the classical one.
In regards to tube detonations for lever guns; I understand that they are relatively rare but don't you think that modern ammo has the same risk of discharge? If there is some risk what ways are there to mitigate it? Could making the back of the case extend beyond the primer or the primer be set deeper into the back of the case be a sufficient enough solution that would work if a modernized lever gun and ammo were produced? Do you think having to insert a spacer that would fall out when the round was being picked up by the lifter be a more practical option instead? Alternately, would a magazine similar to a FN P-90 not work as a detachable magazine alternate to a tube magazine under the barrel on a lever-action gun? I'm not looking for 20+ round capacity from such a magazine. Just a ~10 round alternate to a tube magazine that doesn't have the same risk of accidental discharge. Note: This isn't strictly for Karl. I welcome everyone to share their thoughts on these questions.
A few Q&A ago you said you like Mezcal. I bought a bottle and it tasted like diesel fuel while standing in the smoke of a green pine campfire. Perhaps I didn't choose wisely. Is there any brand that you would recommend to a beginner?
The quality of mezal is across the spectrum and now that it's gaining popularity, that will only get worse. I'd recommend trying Del Maguey Crema de Mezcal, that will be on the sweeter end of the flavor profile if you're ok with that, though.
@@InrangeTv Thanks. I will see if I can get my hands on that. Love your content by the by. Hands down the best "gun" channel on UA-cam (I like how it isn't always about guns). Thanks for doing what you do.
I can’t wait to see your video regarding the trap door especially if you look at the martini the Snyder if you go back just a few years earlier with the sharps in the rolling blocks so can’t wait to see it
What is your criteria for the guns you place on your table during QA and other accessories? Does it have something to do with the questions or is it random weirdo stuff?
19:00 To add also the location is important. If i ever given the option for a 7.62 ak/ak style gun or a high end ar15 in a place where 5.56 is less common i would take the ak 9/10 times. A gun can be gold plated but if there is no ammo then its just a hunk of metal. Also yea 7.62 gets deflected less just because of mass.
As to slam fire being a feature or not, some versions of the Ithaca model 37 came equipped with an auto sear to facilitate slam firing. So obviously an intentional feature in certain cases.
Bone Tomahawk blew my mind. Sci fi meets western in a very interesting, innovative way. Great dialogue. Harsh movie, very gritty. All the actor's involved do an amazing job. The primary plot has lots of minor subplots and unlike most movies these days, the characters have backgrounds and personalities and some even have character arcs. True love, romance also make it interesting and different from the normal cookie-cutter, flat storylines and characters. One of the primary characters is a complete bad__s, nearly to the point of unbelievability, but true love can be a powerful motivator. Just to be clear, the brutal violence makes this a solid R-rated movie and should absolutely not be watched by children - this is very much an adult movie, but a diamond in the rough IMO. Off topic, I can't believe I watch you and Ian answer questions from channel supporters for an hour, but I keep doing it because its very interesting. You guys rock. (big hug). .

I friggin loved red baron! Still got the box somewhere...
I'm old and played red Baron
Commenting for the algorithm I highly enjoy listening to karl answer these questions.
Ah! The Two-Headed Sonoran Snarkapede. I've never seen one so nicely taxidermied.
Rare indeed.
Recently started playing Euro Truck Simulator 2 and these videos are just perfect to listen as I virtually haul my ass for 1000s of Km. Cheers!

The second to last moment?
Kickass! Thanks for another great Q&A Karl, this brightened up my day, the outdoor aesthetic is always nice :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Looking forward to the indigenous history. This channel always does a great job with less mainstream historical topics.
Hearing your opinion on trapdoor makes me desperately want to see a brutality match restricted to single-shot black powder variants. I think competition with trapdoor Springfields, Martini Henrys, Remington rolling-blocks, etcetera, would be AWESOME!
Working on something like that, actually.
I’d choose my black powder revolver over my modern pistol for a pistol stage that could be done with six shots.
Topo Chico, a man of culture.
Q&A time. Awww yeah! The end of these always comes as a surprise, I just never really notice the time. Engaging stuff.
Karl, thanks very much for another interesting QA. This one covered a great variety of topics.
I may get some flak from this but as someone who is more left leaning and progressive but supports gun rights it is really nice to hear from someone in the gun community who is not bashing everyone else. Thank you!
Really enjoy Q&A sessions, they are somewhat personal experience, like sitting in the small audience and questions come from the crowd.
I loved our Amiga 500, it was the first Computer we ever had. Great thing!
"You can't live and let live with bugs, Karl." Old west vignette, name that movie.
Tombstone, obviously. Bill Paxton as Morgan Earp.
@@InrangeTv I like The Missing as well, but growing up near a Res makes it hit just a little bit dark.
Starship Troopers XD
Just wanted to say, I like your content, can't wait to see more of whatever it is you feel like doing as its usually pretty cool.
I love listening to q&a’s while I work. Thank you Carl for your insights
Thanks for listening!
I enjoyed this more than usual! Keep up the fantastic content! :)
Thank you so much!
Task and purpose just posted the "new" army enhanced night vision capabilities.
It's an integrated system , halo is now
We'll see how it works this time around. They have been playing with this concept since the 90s through DARPAs advanced warrior program, etc.
so there's a 40 minute Old West Vignette coming out soon? That's about 4 times the usual length and I certainly will not complain about that.
Absolutely enjoy these q&a sessions. 👍🏾
Glad you like them!
Automatic scope rangefinding and elevation adjustment would be a really neat thing if it could ever be made to be durable, reliable, and effective.
Burris has some scopes that do it out now I haven't shot them yet since they're still really expensive related they have some windage stuff in them too.
What an enjoyable way to pass an hour whilst working from home. Will you be doing any more Old West vignettes soon ?
Yes, soon.
I cannot move my mind from the taxidermied guy on the table. We don't have those in Russia.
Arizona is a crazy place.
You love your insight into the interface between politics and the digital world.
A 6.5 grendel wwsd wouldn't need anything other than a barrel change/bolt and the mags are ar15 profile compatible. It wouldn't really have any of those issues you're understandably hesitant about. Were you thinking 6.5 creedmore?
Yeah, I was. Still not interested. :)
Any interest on a shortish video on the origin and development (and lifespan) of Moon and Half Moon clips?
I have an ATN scope. The best use I've found for it has been; putting it on a tripod, linking it to a Tablet/phone, and using it as a spotting scope that can record shots.
As a scope, it leaves a lot to be desired where weight, reticle, ease/speed of adjustment is concerned.
The night mode is rather nice though.
I like the sig bdx line, low power, changeable drop, love the videos Karl.
Love the Q&A’s and Old West vignettes

I work at a hemp lab in ky, im always wary of getting pulled over with my carry gun, because of how the laws are. Its ridiculous that i should be scared of getting a felony and gun taken, because i smell like weed and might have a gram
It should be either or. Legal or not, regardless. Politics ruins everything. 🤷♂️
Too much freedom for some people to handle.
Have watched all you Q&A. Great stuff! but bring Ian back for a visit. You two have awesome chemistry together.
Ian is always busy with forgotten weapons. He is always welcome to go but is just too busy. Question comes up all the time in Q&A videos.
On the carry handle optics mount question, I think he was asking about modifying the carry handles forward portion to a rail but otherwise keeping the sights as is. Which was also done on commercially on some early match/varmint models of AR.
why did you answer 100% of the questions and just leave your co-host sitting there staring out into the desert? poor fella was so stunned he barely moved the whole show :(
He's quiet.
@@InrangeTv Just out of curiosity, what planet is he from, anyway?

I love anything from the old west. I just watched “Big Jake” for the first time last night...changed my life.
Had no idea Karl was an Amiga fan. I miss the Amiga too.
The best!
I bought an Amiga after I left the USN, looking back, I was impressed with the graphics and the 8 bit wide architecture. Very ahead of the times.
I was always under the impression that slamfire was mostly for market hunters, where simply throwing as much lead in the air as fast as possible ensures the most dead birds.
Slam fire has NO practical application.

Topo Chico - better than a beer on a hot day. My waistline also approves.
What is it? Never heard of it or anything similar here in Italy
Incorrect. Nothing is better than a cold beer on a hot day.

That was a very good selection of interesting questions. Thanks!
I couldn't agree more about your thoughts on the Beretta 92/M9. Carried one on 3 deployments, always saddened to hear them maligned.
As ever, great Q&A, keep up the good work!
I do have to ask though, what is that caterpillar?
I’m glad you still have both hands after that chain fire!
Fun fact: The "gooseneck" rail is still utilized by many Israeli Defense Force (IDF) brigades who still use CAR-15s and other older AR variants with the fixed receiver carry handle.
7:25 Karl casts a subtle spell, maintaining his aura of light as he guides the way in these dark times!
Is that a Chtorr? (David Gerrold SF series starting with A Matter for Men)?
BIG RESPECT FOR YOU AFTER THIS VIDEO ON CULTURAL ISSUES
Really enjoyed the answer on favorite finnish cols bewerage, more so because it was a bit unexpected.
Even though it comes in liquid form and is best served cold, I have never though Salmiakki as a cold bewerage (beer, cider, etc) but as an chilled shot.
I did chuckle a little because I had an metal image of Karl drinking Salmiakki as if it was long drink. It did involve torn shirts, animalistic roaring, destroyed terrace furniture and passing out :D
But goid answer! And Salmiakki is good stuff (in small doses)!
Red Baron was one of my favorite games growing up, and Bone Tomahawk is easily one of my favorite movies.
20+ years ago (486 and Pentium era) I found a copy of Red Baron and loaded it on my son's computer. It appeared to be linked to the bus or processor multiplier timing and ran at several times the original speed. It was hilarious to see those wireframe biplanes zooming around at high speed!
i dunno why but i love the videos at this table
You’d still be better off not slam firing.
I would like to eliminate the ability of my J.C. Higgins 12g pump shotgun to slamfire. Is that possible?
I would assume that the slamfire "feature" of some early pump shotgun designs is just a quirk of the out of battery safety implementation in those guns. They just happened to use an autosear, instead of a firing pin block or whatever, I think some used both. I doubt the intent was to use it for rapid fire, and frankly doing so kinda takes a link out the safety chain in a gun that's already quite possibly worn loose enough to be hazardous to begin with.
hey karl, any plans on doing a video on paper cartridges for flintlocks and percussion guns?
He did one, but thanks to the overlords it was not posted on UA-cam
You can find that video on Bitchute or Facebook.

Yep. That's customer service right there.
Another great Q&A
About the 7.5 FK reloading... The projectile of .30 Carbine has the same dimensions as the 7.5 FK projectile. I would like to know if it is possible to load .30 Carbine projectiles on 7.5 FK brass...
Someone has to do it :D
Vercingetorix, pronounced Ver-sing-get-orix, it's the name of a tribal leader of the Gauls who led the final (unsuccessful) gaulic resistance against caeser.
Latin is not my game, but thank you.
ver-kin-GET-eriks
NativLang has a wonderful short about actual period Latin accents. Caesar's "Vini, vidi, vici" sounded a lot like the Grand Nagus of the Ferengi saying "weenie, weedy, wiki."
High King Godric became Vercingetorix to the Romans. Reminds me of the story Pratchett wrote about "your finger, you fool." XD
BAD bolt-release is also very prone to breaking its roll pin or the casting for it.
Thanks for the video, Karl
Thank you!
Love the vids, Karl.

Love your programs.

Karl : "I'll do my own two gun, with kettle bells - and cars !"
The magazine follower on a Henry is essentially a reverse striker if you're being careless. Scary stuff.
(big hug).
