The song is an anti-war song - the sweet child I believe refers to innocent people who are victims of warfare - particularly children - the blind man refers to the warmongers who cause collateral damage without any consideration of the human cost. Wait for the ricochet is an allusion to state that even those not active participants can be harmed. It was written during the height of the Viet Nam war and the Cold War.

It’s Classic rock from 1970 Ian Gillan is the lead singer he’s still with Deep Purple today still singing at 75 years old, I think a while back he stopped singing this song cause the high notes are too high and of course it’s hard to keep his voice that strong after years of the way he sang in live concerts really belting notes but he still can belt out most notes, Ian Gillan also did Gethsemane from Jesus Christ Superstar from 1970 a great version he sung and in his prime he was one of the best for sure, thanks for the reaction video
Deep Purple are an English band, and England weren't involved in America's war on Vietnam. Gillan has said it was mainly about the Cold War, not Vietnam (in 2002, he said "... we created this song using the Cold War as the theme, and wrote the lines 'Sweet child in time, you'll see the line.' That's how the lyrical side came in").
Audience were told to sit still for the TV studio recording - live concerts were wild and loud - I saw them six times in the early 1970s.
This is without question the greatest rock song ever written.

They were asked to remain seated during the performance because it was being recorded for broadcast... and deep purple is a hard rock band.
Great reaction (to a great song) - I was lucky enough to see one of Jon Lord’s last performances with the band.
Classic rock / one of the starting points in metal.
Wow!
I've seen them in concert 3 times . Great shows !!! 🤙🎸
Wow! I hope you were going wild in the audience

“Child In Time” is an anti-Vietnam war protest song
