  • While many of us want that $1000 Hoyt or W&W, our first step into the archery world will probably be on a shoestring budget. Where can you cut costs in your first bow package?

    I love your "beginner" oriented videos, they're helping me identify a lot of weak spots in my form that I otherwise would have overlooked. This video in particular has been helpful; I had a salesman tell me that I NEED to have carbon arrows to start with or else I'd just wreck the aluminium ones in practice.

    I've bought a few bows now, and only been shooting for about 3-4 months. The one I am in love with now, is a Galaxy Crescent 25" riser that was $80 off of Lancaster, and its just around 2 lbs which is light. Hoyt 840 grand prix limbs that were $280, a $20 plunger, $20 arrow rest, a $30 balance rod with weight. The draw weight is 38 lbs which works for me. Started out with a cheapo bow from Wish, and cheap arrows, and that was fun, but only for a week or two. Got some better "real" arrows and that made a ton of difference. Then moved on to a nice Fleetwood wooden take down recurve which again was a huge step up. Shot my Cartel riser with Kaya limbs, which was OK, again going to the Hoyt limbs was a very different feel. The Kaya limbs are snappy and work well, just felt the Hoyt was smoother in a way. Anyhow, my 2 cents. Thanks NuSensei for great videos!

    I use a camel-pak back as my quiver for hunting, my friend pulled all the materials and bladder out of it and had sewn on some dark camouflage that fits my area where I hunt and I have the chest clip around my waste the straps around my legs onto an angle where it looks much like a target quiver that you would see someone wearing. It does everything fine for me, I have the zipper tied at a certain point so it doesn't slide down from the arrows bouncing while I'm walking which also keeps them quite I shoot a long bow hence why I don't have one on the side of my bow.

    I happened to go the used route. Idk about buying used from a store, but a reputable friend happened to be selling his old bow. I got a Samick Athlete riser, limbs, sight, plunger, chest guard, bow sling, finger tab, bow stringer, stand, and case for $300. I'm no expert, but if you have a trusted source to buy from, I would recommend it. My experience, at least, has been pretty good.

      Name is not important, 25lbs barebows (without gadgets like sights, stabilizers etc) cost around 100-150$ and can get you into shooting. Those usually dont even have option for gadgets anyway.
      Mine had Core HIT limbs but also I heard that SF OPTIMO+ is good.

    Really great, interesting videos. However, I went a different road. You can also cut costs by buying used items. If you are in a good archery forum, there is not much risk of getting bad items. After having decided what I wanted (and I did a lot of research, both real life and online), I was lucky enough to find a high-end riser, stabilizer system and sight. As being a skilled leather crafter, I made the quiver myself. I started with beginner arrows and rented my limbs first. Now I got my final limbs and arrows, on which I was willing to spend a fortune and did exactly that. Now I am almost absolutely happy (exception being my bow carrier). Nothing really satisfying on the market. So I am also trying my hands on modifying one.

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  9 років тому +1

      Especially with modern equipment, it's rare for a bow to be in bad condition, and second-hand bows are practically as good as they were brand new, but with a few nicks and scratches. Archers tend to have a lot of stuff lying around over the years and getting your hands on a second-hand buy is almost as good as buying brand new, for a much lower price.

      I agree. seriously, what's that important about the tolerances on a bow? if a rifle bore is +/- 0.05mm it will have a serious effect on the accuracy. Can you really say the same of sight and limb mounting points on a riser?

    I'm not sure how common this is other places of the world, but here in germany you can actually rent a bow. You get an ok bow including a cheap sight, arrow rest, stabilizer and button. Of course you have to buy some stuff, like quiver, tab and the arrows. So, to get started you spend about 250€ of which are about 90 € rent for half a year. Also you can exchange the limbs for a small fee.
    This is imho the best option for beginners, if available.

    I'm more interested in traditional field archery with an English longbow, the best I've found are Bickerstaffe who have a very good reputation, their most expensive range is £650, their beginners bows being no more than £300. Is this good enough and would it be a bad idea for me to later make my own bows when I'm at a slightly more advanced level of experience?

    • @NUSensei

    I've just started on archery and I'm planning to use standard club bows for awhile at least until I can shoot properly, but I'm planning to buy my first bow for future use. Problem is there are no nearby archery stores in my area. The nearest one is in the next city with limited stock and overpriced items (really overpriced, it's cheaper to buy online and ship it from Australia or US than buying in that store).
    Thing is my relatives from Australia are going to visit me in about 2 months so I've been thinking to ask them to buy the bow for me. I've made plans for it but I am not sure at what poundage should I buy my first limbs set. I'm currently using a 20 lbs bow at the club, but I'm not sure how much stronger I'll be (or even any stronger at all) in 2 months. What are your opinions ? What poundage was your first limbs set ?

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  9 років тому +2

      +Surya Adiwena My first bow was a 34#. If you've been using 20# bows, I suggest you start at around 24#, which would be reasonable for you to become familiar with. You could get 30#, but depending your strength you may have to do more work to become comfortable at that draw weight, which will affect your development.

    • @suryaadiwena3226
      @suryaadiwena3226 9 років тому

      +NUSensei Thank you for your opinion :)
      After a few weeks of training I can now use 24# limbs comfortably. I am quite surprised by this progress but glad I hadn't purchased my bow yet. Maybe I did the shooting technique wrong a few weeks ago so the draw felt much heavier.
      Anyways, in my situation since there are no good archery stores nearby I plan to buy intermediate riser (SF Forged +), cheap limbs, and high end accessories (Sights, Plunger, Clicker). It's a bit different from what you suggested in your video (you suggested to get a good riser first, then sights, and limbs), since I think high end risers all have excellent performance and which one works best for me depends on my personal preference. Because I currently don't have the time to travel overseas and visit an archery store, I think I'll get my "good" riser later when I have the time to go and try out different risers. What are your opinions ? Should I just read some reviews and get "good" bare bow like you suggested ?

      I don't think there's one here. I imagine most of their sales are online though. Apex is a common budget brand that many people buy as an entry point, but it's not otherwise held in high esteem by more serious archers. Most archery stores don't have partnerships with Apex.

    nu sensei, a beginner should start with recurve or compound bow?

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  9 років тому

      Recurve. But, if you're actually buying a bow, the decision is a bit different. It's easier to learn archery form with a recurve, but if you have to choose between compound and recurve for the one bow you buy, go for the one you intend to shoot. Compounds are easier to pick up and become accurate with, as it is more forgiving than a recurve. It's also easier to fall into bad habits, however, if you don't know what you're doing.

      I run a club on the west side. Though you're welcome to join us, there are more clubs in the east and southeast side. Moorabbin Archery Club is the largest one in that area. There's also AIM Archery in Cheltenham, Phoenix Archery Club in Berwick, Frankston Archery Club, and Waverley City Archers in Mulgrave. Check the Archery Victoria website for clubs and contact numbers.

    So, I am tall with long arms and the rental bows at the club are mostly 66" and only one 68". I just ordered a 70" so that I could be assured a bow my size every time I went for lessons, open shoot, and club competitions. 25" riser on clearance, long 24# limbs (plenty for 18m indoor target) about $110 USD delivered to Canadar.
    Inexpensive does not ALWAYS mean cheap, it should cover my needs for a year or two

    if a bow is under 200 and metal is it better to go for the metal as it won't vibrate as much or will it be so bad quality metal you might as well go for wood.

    I've been wanting to get into archery since forever, but as you said, I am in college and money is not really flowing in.
    I was considering buying this kit to start with and see how I like the sport and if I have enough time and enthusiasm to pursue it:
    www.merlinarchery.co.uk/first-shot-archery-kit-adult-gent-right-handed.html
    What are your opinions? It's really cheap so I'm skeptical.

      Michael Scott The kit is a good one for your first experience in owning a bow. The bow itself is standard club equipment - Merlin used to sell the SF Optimo+, but they package equivalent bows depending on what they have in stock and they're mostly the same.

    Can someone please help me. I am a first time bow buyer and I want a recurve. He described buying the individual parts. I have been searching online and I can't find a place that sells limbs and risers sepretly

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  10 років тому

      Literally every archery store sells risers and limbs separately, though it may have to do with what kind of bow you are buying. If you are buying a cheap wooden recurve, they're usually sold as a set. If you're buying Olympic-style target recurves, they're sold separately.

    • @iang.9109
      @iang.9109 10 років тому

      I don't want an Olympic style now. I'm just looking for a bow that I can shoot it my backyard, just for fun

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  10 років тому

      Then if you're looking for a basic takedown recurve, like the Samick Sage, the limbs *don't* come separately. These recurves use their own limbs and can't be swapped out for with other models.

      Used bows are very good. You can get good bows for good prices, usually with only superficial scratches. Modern bows don't deteriorate with age, so you're safe in buying used.

    could a beginner start archery with a compound bow???

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  9 років тому +1

      Yes. Nothing wrong with going straight to compound. The reason why clubs and beginners use recurves is because they are simpler and require no personalisation. Additionally, beginners find it easier to pay attention to form, while the compound bow does a lot of the work for you.

    Master, what is the difference between a target and hunting bow?

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  10 років тому

      Target bows are designed specifically for Olympic-style competition. They're bigger, heavier and feature long stabilisers for accuracy over long distance.
      Hunting bows are meant for the field and are more compact.

    • @lanunselatable5449
      @lanunselatable5449 10 років тому +1

      They are also different in draw weight. target bow is usually around 40-50lbs. Hunting bows usually around 60-70lbs. But that's not to say you can't hunt using target bow or shooting competition with a hunting bow.

    Just start with a Samick Sage and some Easton powerflights!

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  10 років тому

      If you're "just looking for a bow", that's an economical choice. However, if you're looking at taking up archery as a sport, I wouldn't advise getting the Sage. There isn't any progression from the Sage, whereas even a cheap take-down bow is modular. Additionally, using an Olympic-style take-down bow allows you to use attachments such as the clicker, which you can't on a wooden riser.
      While getting a wooden bow is affordable for most, I often find that new archers will move on within several months. It's a line between having a bow or saving up a bit more money for a full kit.

      It's the same advice I give to most people. If you don't know what you're doing, buying a bow should be the last thing you do. Go to a club, get some lessons in, and find people who can guide you in the right direction. Otherwise, you may end up tearing a muscle and breaking a law.

    Nice video, honest opinion. But what are you really getting when paying 500$ more on a riser ? A 300$ riser nowadays has all the fittings and adjustments one needs so apart from a funky paintscheme, where does a 800$ riser make the difference ? Apart from in your budget... ;)

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  7 років тому

      The cheaper risers tend to feel chunkier and less balanced, and they don't feel as "sensitive" to the archer. A more expensive riser can squeeze out more speed from the same limbs and arrows and will feel better in the hand. Quality and finish are also factors in the higher end. Then there's a lot of engineering jargon that gets through at you for the top products. How much they matter depends on the skill of the archer.

    Really not a "beginner" bow. Beginners really don't go for Olympic grade gear. Sammick offers a huge range of bows, beginning with the Polaris (max 40# limbs) - you can get a full set up for $150 or less ( in the US ). The Sage is a bit higher for about the same price (just the riser, limbs and string) with a greater maximum limb weight. Basic gear is a bow glove or tab ( I like the glove), string nock point, and an arrow rest (on the bow). A matched set of aluminum or carbon arrows (recommend 24) and somewhere to shoot, and something to shoot at.

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  10 років тому +2

      The advice in this video is not aimed at the entry-level archer, but rather for people who have already decided to go down the path of sport archery and who are investing in their first target setup (and in many cases, they already own a basic takedown recurve or are using club equipment).
      Otherwise, yes, a bow like the Samick Polaris, Samick Sage, and others like them are very popular for people just getting into archery. As a club though, we already have these bows, so we often encourage our archers to skip this step, unless they just want a cheap bow to practise with.

    hello, first nice video you have a new follower. Second im starting in this sport, what about the samick privilege? i dont want to buy a bow that will be useless in a few months

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  9 років тому

      NahuelCococcia For starters, the riser is only 23", so you may end up having a smaller bow unless you get longer limbs (depending on what you need for your draw length). The Samick Privilege looks OK for a starter bow, but this depends on your archery goals. If you already have the mindset of wanting to compete, you may want to skip this level and go upmarket. I'd say the Samick Privilege is not a bow that will lead onto better "upgrades" should you wish to progress down that line.

    85% of my gear is used@half the price: winstorm2 LH, RH. Winstorm LH, Kap evo2 RH.
    From my limited experience, most major brand bows with wooden riser is MORE accurate than what a beginner can shoot. start with a low cost +165.00 Samick recurve or equivalent brand.

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  10 років тому +2

      Unless you really want your own a bow just to shoot recreationally, I don't recommend getting wooden recurves. Part of this is because clubs and ranges will probably have wooden recurves for hire, so it's pointless in some cases. I'd only get one if you're not particularly serious about archery. As long as you match your arrows with the bow, it'll shoot fine.
