Came too close to being a Flying Dutchman when COVID first began and our cruise ship had to circle the Cape of Good Hope for days. The South African government grudgingly let us land and scatter to our homes (the crew stayed on till Barbados). Gave me more appreciation for this story. Sure love Wagner's music though.

I'm teaching my kids (12,9 and 5 yr olds) about this in honor of Halloween. They were looking forward to seeing zombie sailors! I think it was very classy the way they did the sailors. My little girl loved the romance and the tragic ending!

This is the best stage production on video, and I've probably seen them all.

C'est si rare une mise en scène qui ne soit pas en contradiction totale avec l'oeuvre du compositeur.

Greetings from Germany, near Cologne, where Jacques Offenbach was born.
This performance is really great, traditional and creative, this is what opera fans love.
And it is modern with the help of an amazing technical support.
The Dutchman is quite handsome and not such a phantom. This should be discussed.
I was full of tension what the ending could be. I have watched a lot of performances, and on a German stage in Hagen, 25 years ago, Erik holds Senta back (rescues her), the "nightmare" comes to an end. There is a TV performance on DVD with McIntyre as Dutchman, Bayerisches Staatsorchester, directed by Vaclav Kaslik. Why do I mention this? The ending of that performance was criticized. Senta just jumps into the water and that is all. Though it was a TV performance the technical opportunities were not applied. This is quite different here, though it is a stage production Senta and the Dutchman are magnificently appearing again, they vanish in the universum, really great.
This is what opera in the 21st century should be, traditonal but with all the opportunities of today. A pity I was not present.
No comment on orchestra , conductor and singers, brilliant. And Wagner's music speaks for itself.
Only one negative point: Merely by chance I have come across this performance,

Yeah, this is a great performance and lovely staging. A ghost-story, with a real ship, seamen, even a ghost-crew, The Dutchman in his outfit look like an old French or English lord, which shows that he really is sailing over the seas for centuries. The Dutchman sang well, the Steuermann too. And as you pointed out the projection of the sea, its waves, the picture of the Dutchman and finally Dutchman with Senta going into the stars was simple, but effective and fitted perfectly. Sadly you won't see these kind of sceneries in Germany.

@@julianwolf6689 Dear Julian, thank you for giving this highly competent comment which I much appreciated.
At least I once saw a great perfrmance in Düsseldorf with both ships on
      stage.
And there was an extraordinary version in Hagen. Senta was going to jump into the sea. However, Eric prevented her from doing this. He clapped his hands and the Dutchman disappeared together with his crew. This made it clear that Senta's devotion was only an allusion based on a painting. An ending open for discussion.

The orchestra brass had some problems with the start of the overture, but then better. The orchestra is a bit too loud--this may be the placement of the microphones. The Daland has a good voice, as does the Steuermann. The Dutchman's voice is also good, and they all have clear diction.
This performance is more conventional than that of the ROHCG and compares favorably to it (also on utube). The use of the set is consistent with the story.
Act 2 at 53 minutes. The singer who portraits Erik has also got a strong voice and good diction.
Act 3 at 1 hour 48 minutes. Lots of drama and acrobatics. The ending is consistent with my vision of this opera. The ROHCG is far too abstract, while this is more literal.

I watched this back in the summer and have come back to comment and consider viewing again. I've since seen three other productions from the Met, Finland and last night Vienna, and in terms of the staging, this is by far my favourite, whereby the others suffered from. either static, gloomy sets or an inappropriate, un-nautical modern-day setting. A superb effort from the Californian company, although my notes from the time remind me that the camerawork was rather shaky, to say the least! Shame.

I do enjoy the staging as well but have an issue with the placement of vowels throughout. The diction is slightly jarring.

Sure, so is "The Sound of Music" (the real von Trapp family left Austria by train). But so what? We're looking at this through the lens of 150 years of cynical experience in the Western world. Enjoy the music and the over the top story without over thinking it. Hey, it's Wagner.

I am going to say this for now. Audiences....get a clue. You do NOT laugh during a performance such as this. I don't care if the English translation makes you giggle. Out of respect for the artists that are working their butts off to bring you this performance....QUIT YOUR LAUGHING! If you want to laugh then go to a comedy presentation. It is highly distracting and highly disrespectful!
