Why that?
Solid craft without surprises - to me best manner to stage Meistersinger.
Midsummer's day , June 21st , London. I sit on a deserted common and listen , having just come out of a relationship with a woman I discovered was lying to me , about the most noble emotion of all , namely , love. Feeling quite numb til I started to listen to this and the absolute beauty , rapture , and joy of the overture to act one engulfs me and lifts me up into unchartered realms of joy , immortality and transcendence. All is more than well with the world and the supremely beautiful things in it. Nobody is capable , or ever will be , of doing it like Wagner does. The transition from the overture into the chorus in the church is simply divine beyond description. And cradles one amidst illusionary chaos. Every single note is from his soul. From the unspeakable depths of his soul. I sometimes think just how King Ludwig must've felt when he first came across Wagner and his soul shattering music. But that's another story
I saw it live at Bayreuth a few times. Wonderful with the great Hermann Prey as Beckmesser. Jerusalem did run out of steam a couple times by the end of Act Three
Prey is the greatest Beckmesser of his generation, surpassed only by Weikl himself on the first Solti recording. Bravi.
I agree completely. The next great Beckmesser was Sir Thomas Allen.
I agree. He love how he isn't a comic caricature in this production, but a defeated intellectual.

Tambourines and jews harps weren't too shabby either.
At 1:40:38. a brief allusion to the adagio of Brahms's 3rd piano sonata--a very rare compliment. Brahms was, in turn, very fond of Meistersinger. Today's listeners have no trouble liking both masters.

Ennek a német férfi korosztálynak igen sok kiváló énekese volt. Nemcsak ebben a műben szerepelnek, de szinte hiánytalanul megjelennek Tannhauserben vagy a Parsifalban is. Közvetlen utódjuk a ma már ritkábban hallható Jonas Kaufmann.

Matthias Holle, a great Gurnemanz and Sarastro. I love to hear a top-notch singer as the Town Crier. Both Bernd Weikl and Hermann Prey had sung it in years past.

I've actually used opera stories in my RPG's, since most players have no clue...My favorite was Zauberflote...and forcing the players to be silent for half an hour...
BTW, while stationed in Germany, I rode my bicycle around the city of Nuremburg and later used an old map for several RPG adventures. It's a Medieval walled city, perfect for an adventure because you can use pictures of buildings, gates and bridges that still exist today. I tell people that my years in the Army were just for RPG research.

Wirklich schade das Prey den Beckmesser nie in einer Studio Gesamtaufnahme gesungen hat... Wie kann man die Rolle nur besser besetzen ?
Agreed. He proves once and for all that the music of Beckmesser deserves as fine a voice and as insightful a mind as the other major Wagnerian roles. I like the ending of his story in Act 3; he is, after all, not a really bad person, fussy and pedantic, perhaps, and badly in need of--you know what. But he and Sachs have a long-standing friendship ("Immer bei Sachs") which it would be a shame to see end. "The longest continual smile in the German language" must end with smiles for everyone.

He was singing "Wolfram von Eschenbach" in Tannhäuser too. I think, he was one of the best "Beckmesser" ever.

Musikalische Leitung von Holst Stein ist sehr exzellent! Es tut mir leid, dass ich seine Wagner-Auffuehrung in der Theater nicht hoeren konnte. Ich habe das symphonische Konzert mit NHK Symphoniker und Bamberger Symphoniker gehoert.

@@luigigiovanelli8929 , for me Hermann Prey's is one of the most beautiful baritone voices I have ever heard. And I think he's a magnificent actor, vocal and scenic.
In respect Beckmesser, I've always thought that Beckmesser is usually and wrongly treated as a caricature. But for me Beckmesser is a respectable member of the Meistesinger, who can sing well but in an quite accademic way. And so the contrast between the accademic old (Beckmesser), the unordered new (Walther) and the tradition joined with the new art (Sachs), is better explained than when Beckmesser is only a ridoculous character.
But of course it's only an opinión 🙂

Nearly. In fact, Sachs (Weikl) ironically is the youngest of the three (* 1942). (Jerusalem: *1940; Clark: * 1941).

Wie man sehen kann, gab es 1984 noch vernünftige Inszenierungen (sogar in Bayreuth) im Gegensatz zu heute, wo man nur noch plumpe, primitive, verkrüppelte Interpretationen vorgesetzt bekommt (auch in Bayreuth). Vernünftiges Bühnenbild, vernünftige Kostüme, keine werkfremden Elemente auf der Bühne und nicht anachronistisch, wovon man heute nur träumen kann.
Ich finde, man hat Wolfgang Wagner in vielerlei Hinsicht Unrecht getan. Seine Inszenierungen hat man als altmodisch und verstaubt abgetan, was sie, soweit ich sie kenne, keinesfalls sind. Er hat jedenfalls nie die Musik vergewaltigt und irgendwas hineininterpretiert was nie da gewesen ist. Als Intendant war er ebenfalls unerreicht. Der erfolgreichste aller Intendanten überhaupt und er war immer offen für Neues. Das Abgedroschenste überhaupt ist Wagner mit Naziuniformen. Das war vielleicht einmal in den sechziger Jahren revolutionär, heute ist es nur noch abgedroschen. Ich finde, die Regisseure sollten mehr auf die Musik vertrauen, da ist alles drin.
Prinzipiell gebe ich ihnen recht. Wenn man allerdings, wie viele, das Stück fast auswendig kennt, dann kann eine zuträgliche "moderne" Inszenierung auf jedenfall auch Spaß machen. (Wie z.B. der blaue Lohengrin)
@@tommot7755 Vielleicht ist das so, aber wenn man das als allgemeine Regel durchsetzt, muss man sich nicht wunder, dass Leute, die keine Oper auswendig kennen (und von denen gibt es nun mal sehr viele), nicht mehr ins Opernhaus kommen. Ich selber musste mich im Alter von fünfzehn ungerüstet durch die schlimmsten Inszenierungen kämpfen, um den Don Giovanni oder den Fliegenden Holländer überhaupt erst auf der Bühne entdecken zu können. Das kann man den Leuten einfach nicht zumuten. Und sie lassen es sich auch nicht zumuten: sie bleiben zu Hause.
Allmählich kriegt man nur noch in der Operette etwas Anständiges zu schauen, die ist nämlich aufs breite Publikum angewiesen !

Bayreuth ist ohnehin ein Sonderfall. Weil dorthin nur noch die geisteskranken Politiker und korrupten Oligarchen der Bundesrepublik kommen, die einfach alles abklatschen, was ihnen vorgesetzt wird.

I wish I could understand German. Auto translation helps but translating word-by-word is very annoying. I wonder if AI can do a better job, like line-by-line translation. Anyway, I am greatly enjoying this Meistersinger. I should remember the "Bayreuther Festspiele, 1984" and look for others, too. Thanks.
