Yeah I would say baby seals are the cutest baby animals from an objective standpoint as basically everyone thinks they are cute, though I would say adult seals are less easy to call cute as a whole mostly because elephant seals really offset the cuteness of the average seal with how scary they are.
They could be worse, a lot of mothers, in nature, in a surprisingly large frequency, will do things like infanticide to cannibalize their young or sometimes just because something wasn't exactly just right

Mourning doves are a lot like this. They nurture and protect their babies until day 12-14 when the mom stops feeding them, leaves and sits nearby waiting for them to get cold and hungry enough to do something about it. It's so funny to watch them go from such nurturing mothers to being annoyed that their grown children won't just grow up and move out already lol

first of all the babies have high survival instincts. usually mothers leave their babies with a group, considering mating is done is "colonies". that doesn't entail the individuals within it defend the pups, but it helps to protect them. young seals whose mothers leave, usually gather in groups so they have a better chance of survival. mothers only care for their child, no one else's. mother seals are incredible tbh. they raise them for a few weeks, and rarely ate during those first few weeks. after those weeks they NEED to go hunt for themselves and the child. every mother seal must take the risk of leaving multiple times throughout the feeding period for themselves. all animals do so, they still care for the pup usually. once they learn to swim (which is far beyond the 2 week point, as they haven't developed the layer of skin which helps them not die when swimming) the mother usually is less attentive of course, as every wild creature mother is. genuine information around this including a documentary called "wild babies" which specifically follows a seal pup and his mother. the pups nature instinct is worse then usual considering he's rarely able to acknowledge when to run off. the baby is usually in danger whenever the mother leaves, but considering babies have their own distinct call to their mother, she usually returns in time to protect him. the mother understands the risks but knows she needs to leave
