The ones who take it more serious make it better but Garvin being the ultimate pro sold it well.

I remember hitch-hiking to windsor, crossing over to Detroit to see this card as a teenager (got grounded for weeks when my parents found out) Every major NWA wrestler was there, every title was up & when nobody had lost & we saw a couple of camera men rush to the ring during the match, we freaked out knowing what was going to happen. Just not the same anymore.

makes sense now that flair had the belt so many times , no one wanted to handle the travel commitments of being the champion like flair did , so crockett and dusty kept him as champion all those years nobody wanted the hassle .

Also if I remember correctly, some of his losses was so he can take time to heel and then take steroids for performance when he took on the duty as champ again.

Just goes to show the dedication Flair had to the business.
I mean obviously the fame and prestige of being the top guy and the parties were reasons as well.
But still gotta have that dedication in order to do it that long

And we are all the better for Flair's sacrifice / commitment to the NWA Title. I'm sure it costs him marriage's and time at home that hopefully doesn't haunt him.

@@AlA-ok5jh I mean, that's literally how a few reigns ended. Jack Brisco, Terry Funk...guys got burnt out having to go territory to territory defending that belt. Now you get these smarks bitching about who 'deserves' it. It's laughable.

Jim Cornette said the same thing about the NWA title---Flair held it so long because no one else wanted the schedule. He said Jack Brisco held it for a year in the 70's & was drawing well, but told the powers that be that he was done, put it on someone else. Said Harley Race was the Flair of the 70's--he held it for so long because he was the only one who didn't mind the schedule

Garvin is Canadian. back to his NWA title reign. what I heard was flair wanted to win his 5th NWA title at a starrcade.so in September the title was offered to windham, nikita and 1 or 2 other faces but they turned it down because it was only gonna be a 2 month run. so Garvin took it. I don't know if it's true but that's what I heard. that title run was terrible, he defended it once and was involved in tag matches and a war games match in long island NY the night before starrcade. I believe he deserved better.

    • @tankstoner8496

Actually, the Starrcade 87 win was Flair's 6th NWA title (most people tend to forget he dropped the title to Harley Race again for a few days in New Zealand in 1984. Also, in addition to subsequent defenses rematches with Flair, he also defended the title against Big Bubba Rogers, Arn and Tully

    • @paulsonj72
      @paulsonj72 7 років тому +1

At the time it was his 5th title win(NWA didn't OFFICIALLY recognize the Race title change until quite a few years later but they eventually did do so)

    Great interview !
Ronnie has a a-z and as to zz and a aaa to zzz stories he could tell. Give him the question about his wresting era and he 'll have something to say.
I'd ask him about Gene Kiniski and Don Leo Jonathan and Mark Lewin and Bulldog Brown.
Think Mark Lewin is alive ...good interview he would make. Other 3 guys are RIP hopefully.
Wonder what match stands out for Ronnie?
    Toughest match or whatever?
Gee Ric Flair chest cut up from chops and he never complained at all.

Unfortunately though, as a real fan of wrestling, ya tend to get disappointed a lot because ya find out a lot of them you thought had passion was only in it for the money.
