I hop you do more videos..I am 41 and am looking to get into this art..made one sign in a class years ago and was hooked but never did anymore. Not looking to do big big..more as a hobby and snall buisiness type over here in WA state..your videos are awesome..seen a few and watching the rest!
hey thanks for watching! im currently getting my neon processing equipment set up, so hopefully i can eventually do videos where i remake broken tubes to repair this sign and others. i always have at least one or two more videos 'in progress,' so stay tuned for more!
What company is shown as the assembler of the sign? Too bad I wasn't there when this was made. I could have done the repair work. Reason I asked about the place of assemblage. Is that I worked for Lakeside Ltd and Gage in Store Marketing. And making beer signs was our factory's life blood. Skip Gage had bought the factory from the Levine family. Who had owned Lakeside Ltd.
thanks for sharing! i enjoy hearing histories of signs & sign companies. this particular sign is currently packed away in storage so i am unable to check at the moment, but i will have to remember whenever i get it out!
hello! nothing lasts forever, and neon is no exception. however, well made neon can last for decades, like in this example: www.latimes.com/la-me-old-neon-20120526-story.html turning the neon off will extend its life, but one of the many benefits of neon over LED is that the neon is made from recyclable materials (not cheap plastics & e-waste) and neon can either be repumped or remade when the tubes reach the end of their working life. *TL;DR... neon signs are made to be lit up & enjoyed, so if you want to keep it running, light it up! :)*
Sir, good day to you.. Please, if I have a sing and a half of it works, other letters are broken, does that harm the transformator? I notices that transf. becomes hotter. so, would it hepl to take the oll other broken neon letters? What you suggest me to do, because I like like this but with hot transformator not good. Thank you so much in advance.
hello, if it is a magnetic transformer (heavy), then yes, having fewer tubes will cause it to be underloaded and it will run hotter. eventually, if it gets hot enough, it can short out internally and that will cause a premature failure. you could add another neon tube to balance the load again, or you can change the transformer to an electronic transformer; they automatically adjust the output to the appropriate level for the load.
@@NeonPreservation Brilliant, request maybe naive but I am new into that so, thank you, I appreciate. Thank you for tutorials and great videos. Loving neon so much.
@@NeonPreservation Thank you, again, so helpful and kind of you. I wrote you on Instagram, when you have a chance, I would like to show you this neon doubt.
there are a few schools which offer such classes. also, you might consider asking a local neon bender if you could visit their shop and ask them questions in person.
if your clear glass bow tie is broken, that can be repaired by a neon bender; it is pumped with neon and therefore does not have mercury. the white Budweiser & Open tubes do have mercury. im planning on remaking my Budweiser & Open tubes to fix the sign, so im holding on to it. thanks for your interest!
the Electro-Technic Products spark coil i have is a bit pricey new (c. $250 USD); however, a similar, albeit weaker device exists that does essentially the same thing: a search for "high frequency wand" on ebay give you plenty of cheaper chinese versions for around $25 USD. they are sold for 'cosmetic' purposes or adult toys. as mentioned, they are lower quality and not as powerful, but still pretty neat nonetheless. if you're just looking for a "neon tube tester", you can find some cheap chinese ones as well for about $15 USD. they aren't as fun since they dont produce the electrical arcs like the spark coil does.
@@NeonPreservation what else are they actually used for, I'm asaing it doesn't hurt, I stumbled on your video because I have a small neon sign that has a tiny hole/crack, is there any way I can fix this without removing and replacing tube, since the hole is so small can I just close up the hole with super glue, resin, or some glass polymer?
a spark coil/tube tester will only light up a functional tube... if the tube is cracked/broken then the vacuum inside has been lost and the tube will need to be remade or repaired, depending on what the fill gas was (Argon/Mercury or Neon, respectively).
the Bohemian Cafe was a great place! i even went to the final auction after they closed. sad that all these family-owned restaurants are closing one by one. i am grateful, however, that pieces of it are still part of Little Bohemia, decorating places like the Infusion tap room. what is truly amazing is that the Bohemian Cafe neon sign got restored and rehung by the Dundee Bank! props to them for preserving the history of the neighborhood, and now everyone who drives by can enjoy it!
prices can vary by region and by style; they made these in at least 3 kinds: plain (no additional text) or with "OPEN" or "ON TAP" at the bottom. i'm not really sure which variants are worth more, but i'd expect people might be asking around $200-$250 USD for a working example. i paid $30 for this broken one.
@@NeonPreservation Okay bcs i found one here in Finland that is almost the same what you are repairing but this one is without OPEN and pit smaller size. 40 usd
@@NeonPreservation im not awear of these neon signs but they are cool to have :) nowadays there are too many led neons not original ones. Glad to have one now.

Hi, can you tell me what voltage transformer is needed. Thank you from Ireland
@@thumbtack40 i didnt see this comment until just now (two years later), but if it still matters, the transformer is a 7500v 30mA.
