  • Welcome back to the woodshop! Today we start in on a project that means a lot to me. We get to build a massive kitchen island for a couple friends of mine who lost their home to the Echo mountain complex fire a couple years ago here on the Oregon Coast. They are nearing completion of their beautiful house and we had the honor of creating for them a beautiful centerpiece for their new home! We hope you enjoy this build and if you haven't already, please like and subscribe!

Nice work. Beautiful done. This past summer is built a similar piece. 18' × 48" x 36 tall white oak. Rift a quarter mix. Finger Jointed ends. No easy task. Tight bond 3 was drying to fast. Lol it was hot. Very similar build. Keep up the good work.

No doubt! The length sure makes it a tricky job! Would love to see that piece!

Hey! We used Odie's Oil on this project. First coat was their super penetrating oil then 4 coats on top of that of their universal finish. Thanks for watching!

Hey man- love the build and your channel overall. Grew up in Portland and spent a ton of time on the coast, so it’s cool to watch your stuff. Quick question as I’m a hobbyist woodworker trying to break into selling furniture- why did you use a rabbet for the waterfall instead of miter with dominos? Any insight on that decision is appreciated as I’m still learning. Thanks man and keep it up!!

Hey Mark! Thanks for the comment and taking the time to watch! The original plan was to make the counter top only the size of the cabinet bay which was just under 10' and making the width only 36". This was also going to incorporate that mitered waterfall edge. As we decided to go significantly bigger I got worried about the integrity of that joint over time which is why I decided to do what I did with that notched edge giving significantly more glue surface and stability especially during transport as I delivered it all in one piece! Long edge miters sure are tough! Hopefully this is helpful! Thanks for tuning in and good luck! If I can make furniture building and design my main source of income, you can to man!
