At one point in their war, Russia and Ukraine were firing up to 60,000 artillery shells a day, and even during this spring’s lull in U.S.-backed supplies to Ukraine, the daily average was still roughly 12,000 shells.
The result has been a global shortage of gunpowder that’s beginning to show up in prices paid by private consumers here in the U.S.
The problem is relying on foreign manufacturing.
Depending on China for gunpowder and nitrocelouse in 2024 is like reliance on the AXIS and their puppets in 1938.
Nitrogen is everywhere. Cellulose is in every plant and tree. Seems like it would be easy enough to produce.

In my state two gun powder and explosives plants were closed and razed to the ground. This shortage was planned.
Can't get primers and powder prices are rediculous. Preferred bullets ane expensive or altogether unavailable. All we have is a habit that we can't afford. Don't blame it all on Ukrainian war, the issue started years before that. I feel it is just an alternative form of gun control by those in positions to make changes.
The ammo shortage began in 2003 when the US Army National Guard started training troops for Iraq. They were shooting a year's worth of Lake City production every few months. During the invasion, we did not go into Iraq with our full allowance of ammo. The Guard blew it all. We had buy ammo from Winchester, Europe and Israel.
The price of copper & lead skyrocketed. Couple that with fear buying in 2008, 2012 & 2020.
The massive increase of 155mm artillery shell production created a shortage of TNT & steel. Russia is burning through all the copper, lead, steel, and nitrocellulose they can buy.
It's not politics. Not a conspiracy. It's been simple demand. Wars plus fear buying.
Before California started to restrict ammunition ordering and started background checks in 2016 I stocked up, both ammo and components like powder. If you’re a hunter or shooter and live in a leftist state, you’ve got to learn to reload and keep an inventory.
Keeping inventory is key, as there are ongoing shortages for critical components like primers and sometimes bullets or brass for specific calibers. I just got back into reloading after a hiatus a few months ago and had to shop around to stock up on primers that were running low in my collection of components.

There should not be a shortage in the US considering we have domestic gun powder manufacture and are not reliant on foreign gun powder. If we have a shortage then its due to military consumption either domestically or foreign. The big problem is domestic primer production and cost that is insane. It may be cheaper to buy foreign primers than domestic ones. Primers are not worth what they are being priced at today. Their price has at least doubled and and in some case tripled since 2019. That is not a production problem, that is greed given the demand. If folks want to drive prices down they they should pay only the lowest prices when they have to buy, otherwise don't buy at all and boycott until prices drop.

You can't control powder products in a foreign country, no substitute to producing the powder in the US.

Scare tactics
Most consumer cartridges could use either small pistol or small rifle primers, if cases were made with small primer pockets. Example 454 Casull uses small rifle primers.
Gunpowder can be stored a long time if it doesn't get hot, cold, or damp.
In the "Israel conflict" gunpowder use is on one side only.
