There’s a big difference between Top Gear and GCN 😅 TG always had unbiased reviews and critics. Can’t say that for GCN. Never seen TG asking a manufacturer if they can test/destroy their products...
I genuinely loved this. Very nicely produced and had me laugh out lout a couple times. Absolutely brilliant! I'm sure a ton of people would really enjoy more content like this. Also can we take a second to appreciate Hank for all the crap he endures? Did he know it was part of the job description when he signed up or was there a "tough luck mate" moment?
Tested at below -20C daily commuting in Canada in winter. Stops shifting @around the half hour mark in @-23C due to the li-ion battery in the cold. Once at work it warms up and starts shifting again for part of the ride home lol. Below -23, best strategy here is pick a good gear to be in and single speed it. The only thing holding the system back in extreme cold is battery tech! Di2 is great, don't regret getting it at all!
@@Mrich775 That's why replaceable hangers are nice. Back before them, the hanger was a part of the bike frame. If you messed it up, you had to trash the frame or find a welder to attempt a repair. (For steel bikes, there could also be potential in bending them back)
For the saltwater test, I would have recommended having the bike submerged for an extended duration, perhaps say 24 hours. The drop into the harbour, albeit spectacular with Hank’s never quit demeanor, might not have given the saltwater a chance to affect the system.
My rear derailleur Di2 stopped working without being buried, downed or frozen. It's 4 years old, so outside the 2 year Shimano warranty period. The unit just stopped being recognised, bike shop did a full diagnostic on it. If Shimano are so confident of there product, why just 2 years warranty? Some things, my boiler for instance, has a 10 year warranty.
That is so satisfying to watch ! GCN presenters usually have every possible bike tools and us, poor mortals, struggle to repair our bikes with 6 allen keys and a ratchet ! I was thinking to myself that it is a fair return to watch them trying to dig with a fork 🤣🤣

I used to do a 7mi bike to and from work in 15-30 below Fahrenheit with my 2011 Felt F85, snapped a shift lever, but the shimano 105 after 12 years and 30K miles of barely a bath more than a rain shower on the way to work, still worked flawlessly until this past winter in New Mexico. what a beast. I wish the e-shifters offered at least 0 degrees F, but they look solid.
Absolutely impressive, I never ever did believe that D2 cabling is that robust. I considered it as rather fragile. Now, I am no longer worried about considering the next bike to be DI2 equipped.
And the pheasants were not there in the morning they took the bike out. What happened? 1) the bike ate game for tea 2) they removed the dead birds as scared of the animal cruelty charities?

The temperature test was quite unconvincing, since it was only stored in cold (and not even that cold or that long), instead of the actual shifting being tested in proper cold. It being rated to only -10°C is kind of surprisingly high lower bound, seeing as many other battery-operated devices are rated down to -20. Below -10 is quite normal December through February here; the mechanical shifters on my bike have been operating passably down to between about -25 and -30°C in my use, though they do get a bit stiff at the lower temperatures and the shifting is no longer as precise. But at least it does work, and I'm able to ride all year round.

@Aramintai even peak season at 400 plus miles a week i only charge mine once a month, its a 500mah battery, really doesn't take long.
The best salty water test would have been lending it over to Si for a week of zwifting, though

In all seriousness that would be the harshest test that they could have done, especially if they extended the time period to a couple of months.
