Congrats JD,who doesn’t need cat protection, so glad you thoroughly researched your pesticides, that wobbly trawler made me seasick😂 all the best with your residency👏🏽☕️🥰
Beautiful kitty! You're doing a splendid job with your renovations. We live in the UK but have a house in normandy, France. We've had to do what you're doing as it was left for 5 years without anyone going to it... we feel your pain but it's worth the investment in time. You'll be happy in the fulness of time.
Congratulations on getting your 2 year permit to become an expat in Portugal. Good luck to you in your continued house improvement. I too have always been a nomad as I was in the USAF - have lived and worked in the U.K., Germany, Spain, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Afghanistan and Japan - mostly from military service but also working as a civilian as an expat in some cases. I have also travelled to many other countries on vacation. I lived in Fairbanks, Alaska for a year working as a contractor on Eielson AFB. Have since retired but still love to travel.
Great news so that's one thing out of the way, and Oh your work at sea looks amazing but scary too, great to hear about your life and hopes moving forward. have a great week and looking forward to next video, Hugs Dede xxxx
Congratulations on your portuguese home! ❤💛💚 Just a couple of TIPS: The winter will be cold and damp so make sure you draft proof your home and think about a heating source, because you'll need it from December to February. The damp effect makes the cold temperature feel even colder. Your windows look like they need replacing. Summer is a good time to buy winter duvets, rugs, electric blanket, heater, etc = cheaper. DON'T FORGET when you are a resident in Portugal you are also a taxpayer. If you work for someone else as an employee, they'll have to deduct tax and social security contributions from your paycheque and send it to the tax department. BUT... when you work freelance or receive UA-cam payments, you'll have to declare those incomes and pay tax directly. You may have to register as self-employed as well. You can be both an employee of a company and self-employed, if you have different income sources. The self-employed are allowed to deduct some expenses that are considered necessary for their work, such as internet & phone subscriptions, gadgets, computers, etc. Keeps all invoices and receipts organized from the date you entered Portugal. Health expenses are also deductible. The fiscal year in Portugal is the same as the calendar year, and goes from 1st Jan to 31 December. You have to declare ALL your earnings on the following year you received them, by filling in a IRS tax form online from April to 30 June. After 30 June you pay a fine, added to your tax. The tax is calcutated from your declaration and you'll receive a letter from the Finanças at your address (same address of your NIF, keep it updated) with amount of tax due and payment deadline. Don't try to be clever about tax, because you could get caught (most tax evaders are caught through the NIF number and bank accounts) and it will affect the renovation of your residency visa too. ALSO... the most common reason for expats to leave Portugal is because their visas were not renewed due to... tax evasion (but they don't tell you that on UA-cam). You don't have permanent residency yet... so try to keep all the tax paperwork in good order and pay all relevant taxes. Tax evasion is frown upon in Portugal and can be shared with all the Shengen area too... just saying! Every person has their own personal tax situation, you may be entitled to tax exclusions or deductions, see the NHR (Non Habitual Resident) status if it applies to you, but most income will be taxed. To find out about this, speak to a good portuguese accountant that is familiar with expat tax, and check online too. Don't rely on friends' advice, as something that applies to one person, may not apply to another. Don't panic, you have plenty of time till next 30th June 2024... but it pays to get to know EXACTLY what you have to do. Choose a portuguese accountant and they'll tell you all you need to do and how to do it. Your first chat is usually free.
Thanks, yes I was here in winter, the house is cold and drafty, but i'll have it sealed up by this winter. Taxes confuse me very much so I plan on letting an accountant handle, but I actually look forward to paying taxes here since it actually goes to useful things
@@My15KHouse You've got the right attitude and I'm sure you'll make a success of your portuguese adventure. Most people don't like to hear about taxes and so... ignore the topic... and then it all ends in a panic to get things done by the deadline... and the realization that they've thrown away a lot of useful docs they should have kept. Just as a guideline, a portuguese accountant charges around 100 Euros to prepare all your final year taxes, if you have all docs & receipts ready & organized. Not expensive compared with the fines... And as I said above, usually the first time you talk to them, they tell you what you need to do, with no charge. They are also a good port of call when you have some "officialdom" query. There are lots of accountants in every town, and most of them speak English. Best wishes!
Congrats on getting your visa 🎉 Your job sounds fascinating, thanx for the insight into a little bit of your world The beach looks awesome and it sounds like you’ve really made where you are, home for you 🧜♀️
Ok JD I think kitty is definitely the new supervisor of your weekly videos:) You both did fabulous and kitty is definitely a natural:) Do you ever watch any of the other Portugal youtubers? I notice that some of them end up visiting each other and helping each other out? Do you end up finding community with your village neighbors? How is the language barrier inhibit communication or not? Thanks for another fun video and don't worry about answering these questions since you have a whole house to rehab:):) Congrats on the fast pace of your channels growth,...Maybe if you put kitty prevalently on next weeks front cover he/she may draw more folks to click? Who doesn't love an adorable kitty after all:)
Thanks, I do watch several but unfortunately havent had time to watch much of anything lately, so I'm a bit behind. The neighbors are extremely friendly and helpful but there is a language barrier sometimes, especially since i'm in the older part of town (most people under 40 speak english)
Good luck! Mine was very anticlimactic, printed off so many pages and made so many copies for nothing haha, but I've heard each office asks for different things. Hopefully yours is as straighforward as mine.
I love your bio. It's very interesting, and also great to know that you are so concerned about the environment. You got an excellent deal on the house. It's all about location, and with those excellent transport links you have certainly aced it. Congrats on getting your visa!

Hello, JD Thanks for another great video and you have a cat companion who will probably end up as your 'forever cat'. 😊 My sister and I are preparing to move to Portugal frin South Africa next year. Quite daunting. I also use Idealista to search for properties. You're right about no photos of the inside being no inside to speak of. I discard those and also any which concentrate mostly on the land. Congrats on your SEF.
Hey buddy, great channel and best of luck with your rebuild. Here in ireland the government offers up to 70k grand for derelict or abandoned houses. I'm considering going down this route and your channel is a great inspiration. Keep up the good work 👏
Congratulations on your great news about being able to say. Fascinating life Journey that you are traveling. Memories made in your youth well gave you great comfort and peace later in life.
What joy to see you again, whose smile makes me content, knowing that you are happy! You are your own master and no one has the right to upset you! Your life experience seems conducive to the decisions that are appropriate to you. To all those who send you negative comment to your approach without knowing the situation, I say to them "What is jealousy but a reflection of your own failures? - Michael Connelly, in "The Last Coyote”! Very happy that you received your residential card. I wish you well until the next video!
I'm looking forward to the crown episode. That is, the 15K subscriber milestone to match your $15K House! You're doing well, young man. Wishing you every success in all you do. May the Lord increase you, more and more. Thank you for showing us how to go out on a limb, as shy introverts (camera-shy and shying away from interaction) 😂💞 0:11
We pretty much used the same style when I was looking for a house. I literally followed a commuter train trail on google map and started checking each towns it passes.
Congrats on the residency! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I didn’t know what to expect when I saw a young guy buying a derelict house in a foreign country, but it’s clear this isn’t your first time making such a big life change. I’m looking forward to seeing what else you do with the property. Maybe you could get an electric bike or moped instead of a car. I also have an emotional support cat, so I thought that was a great idea.
Consider making the attic a livable space. Bedroom with small bath? When you replace the kitchen door make it to open outside. It will give you more usable kitchen space. It is a nice project , enjoy it .
You should shoot out some emails to ebike companies, citing your youtube channel so their products could get exposure. Same for portable power bank/solar sellers. Examples being Engwe, Eleglide, Radpowerbikes, Ecoflow, Bluetti, Jackery & many more. What's the worst they can say... Anyway all the best on your renovation project
I got an email from a powerbank company but I dont really need it for this house, and I think it'd be more in that way than anything...would have been awesome when I was living on my sailboat though. ebike is a good idea though, I was going to get one when I got here but those things are expensive
@@My15KHouse I misspoke when I said powerbank. I meant powerstations that can be replenished/charged by solar panels or a/c power. They would come in super handy in the scenarios of a power outage, camping trips and with the price of electrictiry these days; charging up an ebike for free. Most of the power station makers have complimentary soar panel kits, so don't rule them out. Many small youtube channels in Portugal have gotten stuff like this, so I just thought they might come in handy. All the best mate :)
Wow I’m sooooooo happy for you on becoming a Portuguese legal resident 😂. I also have a new found respect for you I would not get in one of those fishing crazy ships even for a million dollars. Ty for another wonderful and informative video. Big hugs from Sunny Florida.
Oooh I'm early. 😁 Another great video. Even when people are commenting not so nice direct things the way you deal with them is lovely. Kill em with kindness. Can't wait for more videos on the off shore job!
There's a company that does heat treatment to kill the wood bugs. The whole house is heated enough to kill. Congratulations on your visa. You are so cool!😊
Yay, congrats on your residency ! 🎉🙌🏽 On the areas of Portugal, your description of Lagos is how we felt about everywhere in the Algarve. We explored all over Portugal multiple times and they can be quite different and you definitely have to experience areas for yourself. Thank you for touching on the toxicity of chemicals, especially pesticides that are widely used. People need more education on the affects on themselves and the environment (e.g. runoff that pollutes water resources, toxins absorbed by fish and through plant roots, etc). Burning is another issue - I’d love it if you were to get an air quality sensor to measure the readings during the winter. I’d be happy to donate, if you find a good one. 😁 What an awesome job you have ! I can’t wait to see more videos of your work offshore . I have degrees in geology and hydrogeology, to address water issues, but that has bled into areas like renewable energy, etc. I understand having a variety of jobs ! 😃 Looking forward to your next video - enjoy the summer weather, while it’s here ! 🙌🏽☀️

You mentioned that you were born and raised in Arkansas. My husband was born and raised in Batesville, Arkansas (90 miles north of Little Rock). If you don't mind me asking, where were you born? Thanks...I've enjoyed watching you take your home from uninhabitable to something livable.
Great video. You are such an accomplished and interesting person. Congratulations on gaining the Residency Permit. I am enjoying seeing your work on the house that you purchased. Best Wishes from Adelaide South Australia.
@@My15KHouse I am old enough to remember the decline of raptors due to DDT and do my best to pay attention to things like this. I'm glad we don't have to deal with woodworm here in North America
Number one.... the cat!!😸 so adorable!! Number two, you will never have people happy about everything at all times, so, please yourself at least you will be happy! Having lived in several cities in the US, I think the price is great. Having older ladies for neighbors is great, because I think you can relay in their knowledge and friendship. I saw your neighbor stopping by in the other video and that was so wonderful, to have someone stop to give you something, is priceless☺ The part about the boat terrified me lol My Portuguese ancestors arrived to this continent and I don't think any of them went back, I guess they didn't enjoy the spikey ocean waters 🤣 About the wood treatment, I don't remember the name but I have watched several channels from Spain that use something on their very old wood beams, maybe you can check in Spain? CONGRATS for the residency!!
The treatment I found is from Spain but the place in Braga is the only store that sells it in the whole country. But it would be a lot cheaper to fly to England and buy a couple bottles of the concentrate than buying by the liter even in Spain. Thanks for the great comment!
@@My15KHouse with Brexit, maybe you would have problems at the border if you bring large quantities of pesticides from England. Better to check first.

Very interesting. I like your little house. I think I'd prefer a larger yard, but your location sounds perfect.
Me too, but a small yard is better than none
@@My15KHouse Indeed...
Lovely loaner cat. You'll do fine there near Coimbra. Best regards from rainy, thundery, mosquito plagued, termite ridden Miami.
Oooh I'm early. 😁
Another great video. Even when people are commenting not so nice direct things the way you deal with them is lovely. Kill em with kindness.
Can't wait for more videos on the off shore job!
I like that cat too. 🙂. Congratulation on your residency.
There's a company that does heat treatment to kill the wood bugs. The whole house is heated enough to kill.
Congratulations on your visa. You are so cool!😊
This dude has lived! Fair play to you 👌👍 congrats on being able to stay there
Yay, congrats on your residency ! 🎉🙌🏽
On the areas of Portugal, your description of Lagos is how we felt about everywhere in the Algarve.
What an awesome job you have ! I can’t wait to see more videos of your work offshore . I have degrees in geology and hydrogeology, to address water issues, but that has bled into areas like renewable energy, etc. I understand having a variety of jobs ! 😃
Looking forward to your next video - enjoy the summer weather, while it’s here ! 🙌🏽☀️
Thanks! It really amazes me how people will have no clue what theyre spraying in their yards and inside their houses (but then be overly concerned about something thats a non issue). Your work sounds awesome too!
@@My15KHouse It worries me that you planted 'Food' in that Soil...that you scrapped up.... from your yard.
That's an environment... that you have no idea just what was > sprayed / thrown out ..etc. in the yard. (you said you found plastic/metal/ etc)
What chemicals they sprayed > pesticides in your backyard / sewage / old paint / human waste / Yikes.
> It is most likely... contaminated / Toxic. ☢🚫⚠ Please be cautious.
* I would Not eat anything grown in that soil * 🤢
Bags of Fresh clean soil....are not very expensive... for your small area. A Local farmer may have some Compost to sell.... ?
Congratulations !!
Congratulations on the residency permit!!👍🏻 Thank you for sharing with us. Interesting how you zeroed in to location that you chose.
You are a very smart hard working fella. I hope you locate the chemicals that you need.
I was wondering how you get materials to your new home. I’m guessing by delivery or like you said you can rent a car.
Enjoy the adventure!
Watching JD's videos and learning of his background makes me wonder what the heck I've been doing with my life for 48 yrs......🤦🏻♀️. Love the videos, JD. Fascinating to watch to live your very cool life. Thanks for sharing! ATB
Thanks!
Congratulations on being able to stay! My husband and I toured Portugal last November and loved the cities and the people. Our tour included University of Coimbra. It was so beautiful! Thanks for sharing your personal story. 😊. Take care.
Congrats on your residency permit! You have lived a very interesting life so far!
thanks!
You mentioned that you were born and raised in Arkansas. My husband was born and raised in Batesville, Arkansas (90 miles north of Little Rock). If you don't mind me asking, where were you born? Thanks...I've enjoyed watching you take your home from uninhabitable to something livable.
NLR
Congrats on the residency! And from that short clip of your time at sea, I can understand why you'd like a warm peaceful place to live.😳
Great video. You are such an accomplished and interesting person. Congratulations on gaining the Residency Permit. I am enjoying seeing your work on the house that you purchased. Best Wishes from Adelaide South Australia.
thanks :)
Two years woot! Great job 👏 can’t wait to see what happens next.
I love hearing about the ins and outs of the insecticides, it really is fascinating.
It amazes me how many people dont research what they spray inside their house
@@My15KHouse I am old enough to remember the decline of raptors due to DDT and do my best to pay attention to things like this. I'm glad we don't have to deal with woodworm here in North America
Crossing fingers for you, my friend!
A great house in a great area and a cat to boot. Well done for sure.
Thank you, and congrats🎉 I dream of moving to Europe. What a fantastically clear criteria, you explained your choices so well.
I saw your neighbor stopping by in the other video and that was so wonderful, to have someone stop to give you something, is priceless☺
The part about the boat terrified me lol
My Portuguese ancestors arrived to this continent and I don't think any of them went back, I guess they didn't enjoy the spikey ocean waters 🤣
About the wood treatment, I don't remember the name but I have watched several channels from Spain that use something on their very old wood beams, maybe you can check in Spain?
CONGRATS for the residency!!
The treatment I found is from Spain but the place in Braga is the only store that sells it in the whole country. But it would be a lot cheaper to fly to England and buy a couple bottles of the concentrate than buying by the liter even in Spain. Thanks for the great comment!
@@My15KHouse
with Brexit, maybe you would have problems at the border if you bring large quantities of pesticides from England. Better to check first.
Congratulations on getting your visa! Loved the video and learning a little bit more about your history.
Congrats on your Portugal residency and good luck finding a safe treatment for the termites.
Great info for those of us with limited incomes. Thanks. Make things possible.
What a great video; so informative! You're doing a super job on these, and I always look forward to your next video. I've been to Portugal and the Azores a few times yeeeeeears ago and loved it. All the best to you always, from the east coast of Canada. 🇨🇦👍🇨🇦
Parabens pela residencia! I really enjoyed this video and what you had to share. I lived for a year in Coimbra in 1979-80. I can understand why you like it.
Congratulations on the permit!
Thanks for such interesting and comprehensive info! Hope the appointment goes smoothly.
Thanks! Really enjoy getting a glimpse into your life, education, and adventures. Nice to see other areas of the world that aren’t touristy
Congratulations on you permit! Thanks for the video about you and your journey!
Lols, Support Kitty - I'm on board that!! 💖🤣
Great job, can't wait to see more. From California.
WOW! Your accomplishments are impressive!
Your cat is beautiful! Glad she can comfort you.
Thanks for sharing your life update ❤
WOOHOO, you got the permit. Congrats! And, since you like cats, I like you even more. hehehe,. Looking forward to more of your videos. I can't wait for you to get that window fixed. lol

Congratulations!
Congratulations on your residence permit keep making the videos 🎉🙋🇬🇧
Very interesting and informative JD. I enjoy the authenticity of your channel.
thanks
In Croatia we use linen oil for wood worm. You drench it and they come out :)
🎉 For the permit
Oo, great linen oil tip!
Aloha, you have lived in a country that I wanted to live but Nicaragua changed in 2018 and I have never been back to surf in San Juan del Sur in about 10 years.
My middle daughter Anna wants to live in Portugal and I will forward this to her. I wouldn't mind living there with her. A reason to visit. Good luck & I enjoyed learning how you fixed up your home.
Aloha always Kay
it's very pleasent to watch Your video
thanks :)
Good video JD. Congrats
Oh my goodness. He likes trains and cats!💖💖💖
And Welcome to the residence club of Portugal🎉
