I retired in 2010 after 25yrs as a bus operator. When I started in 1985 union had a driver who was also a trainer of several disciplines of self defense. He offered free courses to all operators and he stated the most important part of self defense for an operator was getting out of the seat. Personally I never had an issue partly because like the examples, I physically trained every chance I got. I did super sets of push-ups, pull-ups, dips and full body squats. At 220 there was no doubt I was fit and most people look for a situation they know is favorable for them. On a side note, the trainer who was a older man got jumped by 3 men. while in the seat, he put all 3 in the hospital and the company was later sued by all 3 saying he shouldn't had hurt them as bad as he did. After reading the 1st witness the Judge threw out the case.

As a member of the public, I apologize that bus drivers have to deal with difficult, dangerous, and rude passengers. Nearly every bus driver I've encountered has been professional and generally helpful. Thanks to our bus drivers.

And just like in the east, in Jersey, the rider base gets accustomed to it an just waltzes past the operator and the company doesn't retaliate at all. Once they know it's free they will never hit the fare box again. Do your job and report it, and it is ignored. Try to enforce it yourself and you're in the wrong and get punished. There is ultimately no winning.

@@BakaniSnowpaw For bus drivers who get butt hurt over people not paying there is no winning. True liberation comes from not caring about it 😜
But even so, 98% of my passengers pay even though they know people get away with not paying. It's a misnomer that nobody will pay if they know they can get away with it. It's really just the super hard up people.

Same here. My company told us the money that gets put into the fare box doesn't pay our paychecks, we're government funded. At the end of the day I'm getting paid regardless, I just count them and move along.

I've had passive aggressive people come up on the bus before and it's annoying because I've actually gotten terminated for a bullshit story that the company made up taking the side of a customer over its own operator of over 16 years which was following the company's own rules. Sometimes you just have to pick and choose your battles.

What it takes is soft skills with people. Too many Bus Operators where I work like to give it to people straight and tell it like it is. There should be nothing wrong with that, except the public can be easily butthurt at best, and downright dangerous at worst. I’ve thought about the lighter fluid scenario many times. What I do with bicyclists is just be cool. Let them argue as to why they need to bring their bike on board and the fact that
*I’M THE ONLY BUS DRIVER IN THE WHOLE METRO AREA*
who won’t let them do whatever it is they wanna do. And I just speak calmly. Do not worry about time, because I’m paid by the minute. If they wanna hold my bus up for 16 hours because they wanna argue, then that’s fine with me. The other riders will be upset, but that’s not my problem. My problem is making my $38 and change per hour, and staying alive and in one piece ✌️

Nice video as always! Just one point - I don't think the term "driver" is meant to be derogatory (the way you portrayed it) by most people. In the UK at least, "driver" is a term of respect. Rather than calling someone "cabbie", "hey you", "dude", etc... You address them as "driver". It's similar to "sir" or "ma'am", but for the driving profession.

Dude! Not even two weeks ago, I had a clown get on my train, sat in the C section of the train (the middle part) and started blasting music. I made four, FOUR, announcements to turn his music off. I had already called for security to meet me. The last announcement I made, he got mad AF. He started threatening me saying "I needed my ass kicked" and that I was ignorant. I called it in, so I basically ignored him at that point. At the next station, he blocked my door with his bike so he could come up to my cab and harass me more. I wouldn't open the window and I wouldn't let him speak. I told him to remove his bike and leave. I closed the shade on him, so he came back in and sounded on my door. I sounded back and told him to get off the train. He finally left when he figured out he couldn't intimidate me. The Santa Clara County Sheriff's couldn't do anything. Two nights later, another operator was assaulted and knocked out. I heard that clown (not the same one) was caught and arrested.
