  • @neontetra1000
    @neontetra1000 10 років тому

    I have been watching your videos for quite a few months now. You have always been a good painter but i can see you are still improving all the time. You seem to be able to paint very fast as well. My problem is as a learner i spend soon much time switching back to previous colours to clean up. I am still learning how to get different colours thinned correctly . I am sure some colours require more or less water than others. There is no set mix it seems. For instance when i use a fine detail brush the paint either drys immediately on the tip or i add a tiny bit more water and it floods the mini. I am getting frustrated.

    • @TheApatheticFish
      @TheApatheticFish  10 років тому

      I see what you mean. I think the cleaning up issue is something that you will be getting better at. the more you paint the more brush control you will have. You are correct about thinning colors. some colors need more water or medium to thin down than others but always try to thin down at least a little, don't use colors straight from the pot. And about the fine detail brush I understand completely, you can use liquitex drying retarder to keep the paint wet for a little bit longer and so that it doesn't dry on the tip of your detail brush so quickly. Liquitex drying retarder is one of my favorite mediums at the moment and I use it whenever I want to edge highlight and paint metallic colors. Also clean your brush very often when you are using the detail brushes. don't let paint stay on the brush for too long. Hope this helps.

    Dunno if you're still answering questions, but in your opinion would a highly thinned Guilliman Blue glaze give a lighter blue shade instead of the Drakenhoff Nightshade? Im assuming the Guilliman Blue would be more brighter and clear. I'm trying to go for a very clean Grey Knights look. Great tutorial BTW, I wanted to use this very scheme but didn't know what the final product would be.

    Nice work! Watching this in preparation of painting about 60 Reiksguard Knights including the Reiksmarshal. What paint range would you recommend getting for this high silver look? Ironbreaker+Runefang I guess should do it for base and layer but I'm a bit off with how to shade and highlight it up to a polished mirror look. Thanks! :)

    the problem with your videos is that you use to many different paints and in this video you use over forty five pounds worth of paints i don't know how much that is in dollars that is but every pound is one dollar sixty and that is a lot of money so can you make some grey knight tutorials using less paint but in every way I think your videos are great please keep doing them.

    So I have 22 pots of various paints, and felt I was ready to watch this video and start painting.
    Despite my paints being bought off someone who fully painted their GK's with them, I only own 2-3 of the 10-15 different pots used. Im guessing this method is way over the top compared to the average paint job?

    • @TheApatheticFish
      @TheApatheticFish  6 років тому +1

      yes, you don't need to highlight and shade every color. just the most important to you. I just go through the entire process so people can see what you can do but you don't have to

    • @imnuktam872
      @imnuktam872 6 років тому

      Couple quick noobie questions if you can.
      Just got done with the Nuln Oil step and wasn't sure how much I should be applying, should I be saturating the recesses and letting it dry or just enough to highlight and see effect?
      I used a primer color called "gun metal" on my army already, why do you suggest using black instead of something like that?
      2 gold pots I have are liberator and retributor armor, are those not good choices? Want something that really pops but im somewhat colorblind so it all looks pretty similar to me. Worried a bit because of that so I have been putting off this painting step for a while.

    TheApatheticFish do you bulid your models always befor you paint them? just thinking it would be easier to paint in parts

    • @TheApatheticFish
      @TheApatheticFish  9 років тому

      you can paint it in separate parts if you want but you have to pin them to something so that you can paint them without touching them. also you have to leave the conections clear if you want to use plastic glue. I think that its a lot more work but it can be done if you want. I would understand why you were painitng them separated if you are airbrushing in different colors but at least for me it's easier to paint them completely assembled and you can start playing before you have a completely painted army.

    • @chuckcxr
      @chuckcxr 9 років тому

      TheApatheticFish
      Just use Locktite Ultra Gel glue...the black and blue bottle...it dries fast, and very secure without having to leave anything bare, and as long as you don't gob it on, it won't affect the paint job. And even if you do put too much and it creeps over with a white foggy effect at the edges...a quick light clear coat of matte spray will instantly make that vanish.
      Also it is completely unnecessary to pin things to paint them. Just hold one part and paint the rest...move on to a different piece...and by the time you have all pieces started you can loop back and finish the parts where you were holding it. I've painted 100's of models this way without issue (Guard and Tyranids)

      There's nothing different between the spray and the normal base paint. However, I'd like to stress that there may be some areas you'll miss using the spray like the primer. But for that you can clean up those areas with normal leadbelcher!

    This might be a newbie question but What are the mediums for? Can water be used as replacement?

    • @TheApatheticFish
      @TheApatheticFish  10 років тому

      you can use water instead if you don't have Liquitex drying retarder or lamian medium but the properties of them are such that the paint maintains its properties and you're not just watering it down. Lamian medium for example is just the medium in which paint flows. basically transparent paint. Adding it to your paint will thin it and maintain it's properties.

    I really like how you're using the old paint bottle as a base to help you hold the mini-how did you attach the base to the cap?

      or some equivalent works well for that task.

    Is spray painting the model chaos black a good substitute to airbrushing the primer?

      TheApatheticFish Ohh, also I forgot to ask, what paint is a good replacement for Vallejo Model Color Black? I would guess Abaddon Black, but I don't even own a brush yet :P

      VintageLJ I would honestly say i really like the Vallejo colors most. They have a more matte look to them which really suits the stormbolter. It also works fantastic for my Black Templars.

    Can you use normal space marine models as grey knights?

    • @crcromwell
      @crcromwell 9 років тому +1

      +Aaron Rock Regular space marine models will be missing the helmets, purity seals, scrollwork, lettering and I for inquisition that all the grey knight models have. Also most GK models have storm bolters attached to their wrist, which obvs regular space marines won't have either. I have seen some folks turn the dark angels that come in Dark Vengeance into nice looking grey knights. So my answer is if you're willing to do some light conversions you can make regular marines look like pretty convincing grey knights, but ultimately the rule is anything your opponent is ok with is fine.

      crcromwell thank you I decided to not do grey knights and do a grey space wolves chapter as it only requires green stuff and a couple of parts and since I'm still in school and not old enough to work in ireland I have a very low budget. And I mostly play chaos but I have assault on black reach and dark vengeance to convert.
