Rediscovering a Lost 1800’s Gold Field

- Deep within the rugged valleys of Tasmania’s west coast , Lie the scenes of countless long forgotten gold rushes. Some of which, were nothing more than a short show, but others, others like the one we’ll be searching for today, were the start of a boom.
With the help of an old newspaper article I found from 1872 I’m off into the wilderness for an epic adventure to search for this location, which has been completely lost to time, along the way we’ll be able to relive some of the memories of the old timers, and discover the workplace of the these hardy men who called this place home over 150 year ago..

The big U-shaped frame you found is part of a horse-drawn slip scoop. A large shovel/scoop was mounted in the middle and dragged by a horse. When full of earth, it was flipper over to empty it by lifting the back end up , so the the front edge dug into the ground, flipping it over. That was how they would have cut the road in. Drag and tip, drag and tip. My dad used on up until the 80s to clean out dams, with a tractor instead of a horse.
that's what i assumed too.
@@ophirpete thanks! I knew one of my intelligent subscribers would know what it’s for 😃
Love the respect that you pay to the old timers, the music, the conditions that they endured just to survive was incredible. Thanks
There are so many elements to admire - your use of research to weave a story, your planning and problemsolving, filming and editing, your wonder and joy at what you see and find.
@@traday123 I appreciate that, Thank you!
It's nice to see you re-tracing some history again.
My family and I love your videos on history and nature. We enjoy it from our lounge. A crevicing hook would come in handy for when the wife and i go hunting the sun drops. Gold.
As always, as a man missing home, both you and Levi keep me grounded
Hi Rob. You are living my dream. Im 46 and live in a historically gold rich country. Its not too late for me. You are an inspiration. Thanks! Ps. Sadly it is illegal for the everyman to obtain or sell gold here and our prisons are some of the worst in the world.
That’s rough. I hope you can work something out. The hunt for gold is a wonderful hobby.
Dang where do you live?
Tom Wraggs great grandson who resides in Somerset can talk you through the whole areas , my husband and him surveyed the diggings back I’m 1977 with drawn maps
We have and many trips there
Yes great video! I will take a hook for my next sniping trip 🤘🏻
@@outdoorloser4340 I'm in South Africa. Should have also mentioned, we are allowed to buy coins etc, but that's it.
Just love your historical research and teaching ability. We must not forget the past...
The green bottle with the crown seal probably dates from the 1920's. The broken neck would be from a bottle dated in the late 1800's. Great finds.
yes id agree the green bottles are post 1900
Correct
Rob, you’re a great story teller with a passion for history and adventure. Thanks for taking us along on this journey with you.
Please do another more in-depth video of the area. SOON
LOVE YOUR WORK
Would love the crevicing hook. Both my hubby and I in our old age are going gold prospecting together. 4 years ago we were set ready to go until I got sick and soon getting an operation which will fix my illness in early August. After that we are going to head off to the goldfields in QLD to fossick. Just adore your family, and man, the work you put into the historical records and then finding the locations is amazing. Always you bring history alive across the globe of watchers. Thank you for being an outstanding humanbeing.
Hi Rob, just came here to say that I love your enthusiasm for adventure and discovery. You fill a niche that has been so sadly lacking on the youtube. As a west coast born boy, your fillum documentaries covering the west coast's classical mining heritage are always fascinating and you're one of my youtube heroes. Stay awesome.
Thank you for taking us with you into Tazzy history
Thanks for the awesome share my new Tasmanian mate... Greetings from the Gold Hill mining district of southwestern Oregon, US. ⛏️⚒️⛏️
So keen to see you hit that 100k bro! And keep up that amazing work exploring our great state!
Lets do it!
Beautiful work Rob, thank you for sharing...you are not alone in loving and revealing history, I get thrilled over every boot tack, button, cutlery and broken tool that I find in the quest for gold...ony to appreciate it is so much more than gold
Finding those old artifacts is always exciting. Some folks wont see the reasons we love to find things they might see as useless junk but to know the history of some old timer using an item in their day to day rough life out in the wilderness is pretty cool to me. Every time!
Hello Rob and family. Hope you're all well and good 🙏♥️
How amazing to find all that history from decades ago .... love that you respect the old timers who used to prospect there. Lovely going back in time with you. Thanks for taking us along.
Wicked find dude. These are definitely my favourite type of vids you do 👌 Keen for part 2
….so Silly likes Robs vids as well, good to see 😉
I watch a lot of gold videos like yours and can't stop thinking that they were digging under tree roots and around them ❤🏴🏴
iv'e found some beautiful old picks, chissels, clysdale horseshoes, harnes buckles, and countless other artifacts in northern tas, nice trip .
Nice job locating the Camp/Mine site! And great history unearthed 👍
You do this very naturally and very well. Thanks for having us along, Rob. Stick a magnet on your pick. No hook for me. I'm too old for wetsuits and sniping - I just shovel then suction pump my favorite spot for coarse gold and facet quality topaz mainly.
“I’d love one of the crevassing hooks” I have a few places up in QLD I would like to give a go! Nice work love the old timer history awesome to see ⛏️
Wow, what a wonderful home you have made
🤙🍻 nothing beat following in the old timers foot steps
I’ve been so inspired by you to start prospecting and I’ve now shared the love of nature and the golden days with my brother and I’d love a crevice hook!!
I too would love the crevicing hook. I live in Tasmania and love panning and detecting. Love the west coast 😍
Hi Rob
I am a relative of the T Wragg you are talking about. This is amazing !!!
Thank you
So much respect you continue to show for the old timers and what remains you discover. Thank goodness you’ve chosen to share this history. As you said, the land holds on to it & so much has already disappeared. This is another beautiful film. Love the soundtrack too. I feel that’s an important part of your films Rob. Heartfelt thanks☺️
Your onto a treasure trove of history there Rob! looking forward to the next instalment, and as a novice gold prospector I'd love a crevicing hook!
I would love a crevasse hook, but more importantly, Rob, I would say if someone believed in reincarnation, you are definitely an old timer reincarnated! It's amazing that your passion for history can be completely documented for the first time ever. The trenches have to hold some gold they missed. I can't wait to watch the next films!
Shout out to Rob for these adventures
@@Jrski11 ❤️
Great spot for a day trip, thanks for sharing Rob. Would love the stainless hook 🤞
Well this is another fine adventure you have taken us along on,edge of your seat excitement, amazing country and history, thank you from the old lenahvalley boys ❤
That is an amazing spot. Imagine back then finding a spot like that and setting up camp etc.
Thanks for another history video.
Awesome video Rob, and I loved the music too mate , obviously lends itself to the rich heritage of many who came out to prospect so long ago ! Loved it ! Regards Leighton
Great video Rob….would love the crevice hook so I may gift it to my son and grandsons to use….they have recently taken up chasing gold on a property in Victoria. Keep up the great work showing us the beauty that is Tasmania’s wilderness.
Buried treasure in them hills, maybe some gold to be found!?!, great film & finds Rob, get back to it for part two soon 💰⛏️📽️👌🙂
Love finding history! Thanks for sharing your journey! I'd love to have one of those crevicing tools!
Rob. Love the variety you’ve been adding to the Chanel and would definitely like to have a chance at owning that crevasse tool. Thanks
Thanks Rob, looking forward to part 2.
Tassie is such a beautiful place, I haven't been back there since my nan passed away, she was at police point on the Huon,
But moved to Grindelwald to be closer to her specialist.
It's been almost 20 years since I've been back.
Awesome Rob. Thanks for showing us some incredible history in our back yard!! My Bro would like a crevicing hook.
Nice job, Rob! There must be a few day's exploring there for sure - are you able to snipe the river? Yes, it must be quite awesome retracing and walking in the footsteps of the Old Timers and finding their forgotten treasures. There must be so much out there to be found. Happy hunting!
You're a good story teller my friend !!
Great video. Love the history. Definitely take us back there and explore the area.
Really enjoyed this video Rob, the history is fascinating! Looking forward to Part 2! 🙂👍
Hi Rob , I enjoy your channel and the respect you pay to the old-timers as well as the new with the gold you find by sniping. I would love a chance at receiving one of your crevices tools as I just lost my favorite crevices tool. It would be fun to have something from Tasmania. I live in Arizona and we use crevices tools quite often. Best wishes, Steve
Love seeing you back out there discovering old huts and ground. Awesome!
Great spot 😊 I love history like this, when the land speaks to you 😊
As always, much love and appreciation, Rob, from Texas. I anticipate each new journey you lead us all through, unable to physically be there, yet there in spirit. Bless you and bless you precious family as you all bless us.❤
Enjoy the beautiful country you travel thru. There are places I could sit down and marvel at the scenery for hours.I would thank you for the tool.I would use it wisely. Thanks for showing the backcountry of New Zealand. Robert. 😊
NZ ?
Thank you so much teaching about the history’s gold rush in your country. Your videos are amazing. Love watching your new adventures with your family. Keep up the good work. I have so much respect for you.
What a cool spot to find ,I found an old mine and loved it but no where near that amount of finds, those krevas hooks look cool I go through so many of them ,great exploration vid mate
The 'washer thing' looks like an eyelet for canvas to which guy ropes are attached. Looks like you found the tents too!
Would love to put that crevicing tool to good use...were it to come my way! Great video, thank you for all you do.
That is a nice spot .I would spend a day just detecting and exploring around. Trying to picture what went on and how they were set up . Thanks for sharing this site ,some great footage Cheers from Oatlands..
I'd love one of those crevassing hooks, would be great for my metal detecting
Great video beautiful scenery
This was a absolute pleasure to watch. Would love one of the picks....
@Rob, another excellent video. Even though there was any gold found the video is as always another great adventure
Great video! So rewarding when all your research pays off! Definitely can't wait to see the next video at this site, I'm certain there are hidden treasures to be found!
Would love a scraper!
Tassie tourism department should team up with Rob!
Yes! I can’t for the life of me understand why they haven’t already. Rob’s heartfelt storytelling talents really hit home & bring each of his pieces to life. Love Rob’s work.
There is nothing like ending a weekend with one of your videos Rob.

I am looking forward to the follow up of this awesome and intriguing video.
Another great video! Love following your adventures - also love Golding when I get the chance. A CREVICING TOOL FROM TYGER would be a bonus! Keep making these mate.

Thanks for the trip back in time
You are an awesome adventurer and historian always look forward to another rob parsons film
Love your videos mate. Helps me escape the depression of the brew room and get to see our beautiful country
Once again another great video!!
Yourself and Levi sure have a great spot on earth to explore.
Can you perhaps on another sniping video show us the crevicing hooks a little closer up.
I'd love to have a crack at making myself one.
Thanks mike
Absolutely stunning
I would love one of those crevicing hooks. You do a great show.
Rob amazing you’re attention to detail is meticulous, I don’t need a crevasing hook just glad to watch these vlogs ! A proud Tasmanian
Another awesome vid Rob, my partner and I would love to add one of those cervicing tools to our gold bag
Wow, I live in that area Henrietta Tas, I will need to go for a look. I have some pretty basic prospecting gear and spend what time I can around my Daughters 52 acres and river in the Crookwell ( Tuena) NSW area prospecting with my Grandsons. Yep, I'm old, 66yoa now . I would love a S/steel tool to help us and enjoy the time we have together. Thanks Ron, love your work. ⛏
Mr Thomas D Wragg led a fascinating life! He was an artist, draughtsman and engraver. His comment on the rapid removal of the Blackwood forest was quite prescient, in my humble opinion. Thomas drowned in the Cam River at Somerset 29 years later.
Hi Rob Great fan here I really like these crevicing hooks! Keep up the great work!
Great video and very much looking forward to a follow-up in this area. Also of course I could make good use of the crevicing hook as well. Thanks for sharing.
I'd love one of those crevicing hooks
Awesome times in the bush love it!
I was right there 2 weeks ago! That campsite is the same one I used!
I'd love one of the crevassing tools😊
Hey Rob. I love these videos. Thanks. I reckon the metal frame you located was the top frame from a wheel barrow. Obviously the rest of the barrow has rotted away.
I would like the crevassing tool.
I would like one of those crevicing hooks please. Fantastic video by the way. And yes that site needs much more exploring.
Great video, I'd like to see more of the area as well as the island there, and man that crevice tool would be so handy. Thx mate for the great content
I'm too old to put one of those hooks to proper use but I sure enjoy your presentations! Well done sir!
Great adventures are all around us! I live in Arizona, US and we have many places here around the Chiricahua Mountains where the old timers mined. Plus I live about 20 miles from Tombstone, AZ and in the 1800's there was a gold and silver boom. I'd love one of the crevassing hooks for my own adventures!
Love what you do rob, I get jacked about all this control these pencil pushers do, that's why I love your channel and the beauty of the tassie bush, I'm just getting into detecting and I would love a crevicesing tool, thanks for what you do rob.
Hi Rob. The family and I always enjoy your history videos. We also are enjoying your new channel as well. There was a comment over there about schooling, socialising, sport etc. Well, we live in a major city on thr mainland and home school our kids with no problems with socialising. We even used your "following in the steps of the Franklins" video as part of our curriculum. Thanks for sharing and maybe 1 day we'll see you on a trail less travelling.
Always love the adventures and all of the informative content! I'm a hobbyist prospector here in North Carolina. Would love to try out that crevicing tool! Best of luck on your future adventures man!
Nice one. Relics are treasures! Would love the crevicing tool for adventures in my beautiful part of NZ 💫
Hey Rob. I’m a long time watcher and love your work.. I’m very keen on the crevicing hook if if I get picked.. best of luck on your future endeavours 👌
Amazing mate there’s so much to see here in our little state, I’m amazed with all the little towns that there used to be, I have a couple of books you may be interested in having a look at mate 👍
Great trip back to the past to see how tough it would have been to be on the hunt for gold. I don’t think my will like me starting another hobby but a crevicing hook would be a great motivator to get out and explore around NSW.
I'd love one of those Crevicing Hooks! :)
I would love a crevice tool…another great vid, thanks Rob.
What an awesome trip in such beautiful country.
