It’s been debated for years, which film is the best from the Thorn Trilogy.
Now, this video isn’t the end of that debate, but I wanted to throw my hat in the ring, and give reasons why I think I have the answer

Firstly, I LOVE the Thorn trilogy (and have no problem calling it that). I grew up on it. I have the Fox CBS VHS, I rented Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers on VHS every weekend for a month straight when it first came out. I LOVE the Thorn trilogy. Also, I agree with you that Halloween 5 is VERY under appreciated. Those two scenes you mentioned certainly are two of the most suspenseful chases in the entire franchise.
Which of the three do I think is the best film? I’ve got to say Halloween 4. That opening shot outside of Haddonfield, with the title card is so atmospheric. The score during that scene is chilling. It feels like the Halloween holiday before the Halloween franchise. I like how the film takes it’s time to begin. We get exposition about Michael’s history before he comes back to life. I really like the family storyline. I know that in the original, he had no motive, yet his first kill was his sister. So, I feel like Halloween II’s introduction of the family storyline made a lot of sense. Jamie was an amazing final girl in this film. The chase scenes through the town, through the school (even with that weird mask in that one scene), and on the truck were great sequences.
Do you know what my biggest issue with Halloween 5 is? Michael has a full set of nice, thick dark hair and not a single scar on his face after being burnt to a crisp in Halloween II. Say nothing of him having a new pair of eyeballs! 😂
Now, Halloween 6 is just an awesome slasher movie. The kills were brutal. Michael was awesome. The atmosphere and the score were great. Halloween 6 really takes what I love about the slasher genre and turns it way up (like Halloween Kills), and that is why I love it so much.

The Thorn trilogy as a whole has the best atmosphere of all the films and it screams Halloween. I also just love Donald Pleasance portrayal of Loomis in it.
    My Ranking:
    1. Halloween 4 (4/5) (It did played it safe but it worked especially making the ending absolutely shocking)
    2. Halloween 6 (Producer’s Cut - incest and stones aside this is my preferred cut especially the John Carpenter like score, pacing, coherent plot (I rather the story be insane but makes sense than zero sense like the theatrical cut), and relying on suspense than gore) (3.5/5)
    3. Halloween 5 (3/5) (Danielle Harris is the better here than in H4 (even though she’s amazing in H4) and love the Gothic like vibes but imo it’s the weakest narratively speaking

For me, it’s a toss up between 4 and 6, and I think a part of that, in addition to a particular atmosphere in both films, is George P. Wilbur’s performance as Michael (plus that of the individual who replaced him for the reshoots of the theatrical cut of H6, since he captured the same menacing and intimidating demeanor that Wilbur did). Michael was just a force to be reckoned with in those two films (especially in H6, when he went in full not-fuckin’-around mode). From H4’s opening credits to Allan Howarth’s arrangements of the music in the film, to the look of Haddonfield and the addition of the electric guitars to the original themes; from the thumb in the head and the pickup truck slaughter in H4, to the exploding head and the operating room massacre in H6; from the chase in the house, during which Brady gets killed, to the moment in Smith’s Grove when Michael walks out of that room into the hallway and stares Tommy down face to face for the first time since 1978, along with the later hallway chase and the pipe beat down scene, these two really are neck and neck for me.

It’s hard to keep a character like MM interesting over the course of many movies considering he doesn’t speak and has no real motive, so the Thorn trilogy certainly did a lot to build intrigue into the series. I kind of wished it continued into H2O, but I also think it would have strangled itself with too much story. I loved them in the order of 4, 6, & 5. Small margins between them, but this is the order of my love for them

I watched the thorn trilogy every October several times each from like ages 8-16. They are so nostalgic for me and always remind me of everything in a midwest Halloween. It's hard to pick a best one without some bias, but I would choose 5 because every time I think of the trilogy my first thought shoots to Danielle Harris struggling to talk and Tina being her sister replacement.

I like to believe the "cult trilogy" is actually rooted in Halloween 2. On the chalkboard Michael or someone close to him wrote "Samhain" - the Celtic Pagan origin of Halloween. Considering it's an ancient druid cult, I can't write this off as mere coincidence.

I strongly prefer the Halloween 6 version of Tommy Doyle over the Halloween Kills version of the character, and I say that as someone who loves both movies. Any that has nothing to do with Anthony Michael Hall’s performance-he’s actually excellent in the film; the character is just much better written in Halloween 6. Paul Rudd’s performance is also very under-appreciated.

I've said it before & I'll say it again w/r/t HALLOWEEN 5, but mean-spiritedness is one reason people who like gialli like it while also being imo the reason others really hate it. I find it's mean-spiritedness to be so sensational & over-the-top as to be edgily entertaining but not particularly offensive, but that's just me personally. With that said, I think the detractors don't give Othenin-Girard enough credit for breaking audience expectations and raising the stakes. Fans of H4 may not like Rachel's demise, but it comes off as genuinely shocking if you see it for the first time after H4 and don't know anything about the rest of the series. She's Jamie's protector. You think she's safe as a result, but Othenin-Girard pulls the rug out from under you.
Then you have Tina take up that role. I think she's a misunderstood character. Tina is a young, impulsive girl that acts kooky because she's immature and just wants to have fun. At the same time she DEEPLY cares about Jamie, so she isn't just some character that's completely self-centered. There's a real tension in her. She's torn between wanting to be the fun, kooky girl that's just out for a good time and caring about Jamie (that care represents her more mature side). Ultimately, she has a real character arc because of this that ends with where she makes the ultimate sacrifice for Jamie.
I've known girls that act like Tina so I've never understood the criticisms of the character. I think people just don't like that she vacillates between wanting to help Jamie all she can and wanting to live her own life as a teen girl. Alot of people are watching it with "Dumb girl! Listen to Jamie! She knows what's going on!" and I don't think that's how her character should be understood.
In any case, Tina takes the role Rachel had in four and maybe, if you're watching it for the first time, you think as a result of that she'll be safe. But Othenin-Girard pulls the rug out from under you again at the end of the second act.
And not only that but he throws in a whole safe sex scene where even though the kids are doing it with condoms in a way that's emphasized, they get offed anyways. I don't recall any other horror movie of the time doing that. It's kind of jarring in it's own way even with the sex = death trope being prominent by this point in the slasher phase. Because, come on, they're doing it safely! But, like I said, they get offed anyway.
And then you have the way Michael just manhandles the police; Loomis is psychotic in his pursuit of Michael at this point, even pointing Jamie in danger; there is no happy closure and the final frame is just "WTF?" with Jamie crying; etc. And not to mention the laundry chute scene. If you are watching that only having seen the first 3 Michael Myers entries you may actually end up thinking "Oh, they're actually going to kill her off" because the stakes have been raised high and expectations subverted so much it feels like it's not outside the realm of possibility anymore.
I think it's a very interesting entry and will always defend it. It's got a darker edge to it than most entries in the franchise where it feels like anything can happen.

I don't think there's a really "Objective" answer because it's ultimately dependent upon the criteria (set of standards you use to make a judgment) you use to judge a film. The criteria used by Roger Ebert is different than criteria used by Armond White (yes, I know most just consider him a "contrarian", but there's reasons he should be grappled with as a critic, ie: his explorations of filmmakers like Derek Jarman, Bruce LaBruce, etc.) and both of those are different from the criteria of a character like Joe Bob Briggs.

I have never been a huge fan of Halloween 5. And no, it wasn't because of the house. I didn't even notice that until I was in my 20s. I guess I just went along with it. Tina? Not a fan. But it's funny that there are a lot of people who hate her. The cops? I think they are hilarious. Rachel's death? Not really. I might just not enjoy the structure of it...
I think it's the guy who wore the mask. That chin just comes out of nowhere. I have never liked that mask. Well, mentioning the chin, it might just be the actor. I have always let that chin get into my mind and mess with my appreciation of the movie.
I prefer the theatrical of 6. I didn't like the producer's cut much at all. Most fans say that it's the theme being back in it, and that's supposed to make it good...? Many claim 6 used the same kind of music as the original, and what the original was. But if you think about it, the original used the music of the day, too. And that's what 6 did. It used the rock soundtrack and rock-score. The guitars, I think they are guitars, doing the Halloween theme was always interesting. When I watched the producer's cut, a lot of originality in 6 was taken away. It brought it back to the original, while I would consider that great in another movie, it just didn't work for me.
The 4th is probably my favorite. I didn't find the mask too distracting. It looks cheap because it is just a Halloween mask. I really like the setting, and the story. I guess the ending might have made part 5 better if they followed through with it. But I can't be sure. The return of The Shape basically made everyone's day. Even though I love the third movie the second best in the franchise, I really liked that they brought Michael back.
    It's between 6 and 4. But 5's chin is a sore spot.

@@TheLostRiverDriveIn The first time I watched the producer's cut I thought I was going to be amazed because of all the talk. But I wasn't too thrilled that Michael was stopped by a bunch of rocks. I mean, Ends has something different from the norm, too, but the idea that runes could have stopped him is funny. Someone should go and remake the original with someone tossing rocks at The Shape. They smash into his head and blood flows from underneath the mask. But suddenly those rocks inadvertently create a rune and he just stops walking.
I just had a worse idea. Someone comes trying to rescue everyone from him until they notice what's happening. This person just happens to be the person who eventually gets Tommy into this stuff. They add another bunch of rocks not touching the first. Then they kick away the first rune allowing this next bunch to take over. Michael starts doing the Crispin Glover dance from Friday the 13th The Final Chapter. That's just because I really want to see others try that dance.
It'll be the actual reason The Shape, Michael Myers, is truly known as the boogyman. Because ever since I have been a fan in the 80s boogying always meant dancing. So I have always had the idea of Michael doing some sort of dance. Back in the 2000s I pictured him bending his legs smacking his thighs, the mouth hole opening and him yelling something. Nothing coherent, maybe just a "Woo-hoo!" And he starts doing something else really stupid. Possibly even a moonwalk. I do hope you can still take The Shape seriously after my weirdness.

This whole thorn trilogy should never have happened. The ending of part 4 had a fantastic set up. 5 is terrible. I mean ,fine lets create something new, but the thorn introduction was slapped on with ZERO and i mean zero direction. Then boom six years goes by and we get CURSE which for what is was designed to do is somewhat welcomed. The cast is solid, at least someone tried to finish this seriously unnecessary story arc.

But I’ll always argue, that isn’t 5’s fault. They introduced imagery to tease something for future sequels, but they didn’t give us the lackluster explanation. That belongs to 6

@@TheLostRiverDriveIn no..ha, I was in a theater when I got to see part 4 opening day..theatre was packed. The audience had fun with the film. Flash forward almost 1 year later, again opening day. Packed theater.. Boos, all around. The two films had very distinct reactions. Hell I felt like I had just seen the worst film ever. Part 6 had the job of explaining the goofy symbol and man in black that was introduced in 5. So no. It's great that you enjoy the film. Good for you. But for me this was the film that hurt the franchise way worse then part 3.

      @@robertchambers6344 I think you’re arguing a different point.
Audience reception isn’t what’s important here. I pointed that out in the video, that Halloween 5 burned all the good will Halloween 4 had earned back. That’s beside the point.
The fact is, Halloween 5 didn’t say, “Michael is in an incestuous cult and because of a galactic curse, he must kill all of his bloodline to be set free”. That was Halloween 6. 5 showed a symbol. A symbol that meant nothing, at the time. A symbol that Moustapha specifically wanted thrown into the film, in hopes of piquing the interest of the audience for “what comes next”. 6 could’ve explained the man in black an entirely different way, and ignored the shot of a small tattoo. But the creative team decided to dive in and try to tie it all together. I respect their efforts, and I enjoy Halloween 6, but that was their decision. That’s just a fact.

I must admit; I’m always thrown when I hear the term thorn trilogy. It doesn’t feel like a trilogy to me because those particular films didn’t start out with the intention of being a trilogy, so it feels Frankenstein’d together; rather than a smooth and strong continuous stroke of terror. I reject the no motive thing. Myer’s has a motive even if we don’t know it. Everyone has motivating operations. It definitely makes it scarier not knowing definitively, but we can work out the concave or shape of it. In Revenge, Tina in the car with Michael, thinking it was her boyfriend was terrifying and I’ll admit, titillating. In Curse, the bus station and farm scene had me on edge and the Myers house felt like a maze almost. That shower and bathroom scene, dear lord so scary. I have an appreciation for the three films and loved getting the character of Tommy Doyle back. Just doesn’t feel like a trilogy.

I think 6 is where it really doesn’t feel like a cohesive trilogy. I think 4 and 5 pair very well together. But 6 feels very different. Maybe that was just because of the time passed. We were in the mid 90’s and horror looked very different by then
