Did you listen to the video? Their HUD contract requires that they only accommodate individuals who self-claim that they are homeless. The mayor obviously didn't follow the correct protocol to receive a bed. Instead, she broadcast "Woo, woo, look at me. Holy cow, does she not have an advance team, or at least one competent PR person who called ahead to ensure that the plan was feasible? Stunt or not, this incident just reeks of incompetence.
Didn't you watch the clip? A woman challenged her and other board members to spend the night in the shelter as they have open beds. Then when she showed up they kicked her out. I can see her showing up without advance notice to get a true picture of what it's like instead of a Disneyland experience with everything set up just so and everybody on their best behavior. Or the opposite so they get more funding.
Here's the thing...plenty of money is spent on shelters. It's just that it never reaches it's goals because the people working on homelessness make hundred's of thousands per year. Think I'm lying? Look at the budget in California. Billions spent on the problem...BILLIONS...yet, sorry, not enough shelters or housing.
I can’t help but wonder where all that money is really going. Is it being spent on payroll, fancy coffee machines, and other luxuries, or is it funding bigwigs' personal investments like property and stocks?
For they record, they won't let a person of her status stay..... Because they cannot take financial or otherwise advantage of her, and because she'd expose the fact that these shelters are a means of generating income for the system and those who work within it. And not to actually help the homeless.
She could have done so by volunteering or just visiting which would have actually allowed her to see and learn about the shelter and those who use it's services. This was a political stunt pure and simple - one that was intended to help nobody but herself.
How bad they are, what do you mean? Are you opening up your house to let people come in from winter weather? At least this place is giving them some where to sleep and get out of the freezing weather. I will never understand some people who do nothing, yet complain about someone who is doing something. @christopheringraham9292 😂🤣😅I have been in the streets for 8 years. I don't commit crimes,I do not use drug's, I do volunteer work for food giveaways and different places trying to keep my resume active in between jobs. My husband died in 2017 I was left with 3 kids on my own. My youngest will be 17 and nobody ever helped. I don't have family or friends. My husband and my kids is who I have always dedicated my life to. I'm on my own and have been and that's how I know these places are bad and don't help. I'm sure God has some good ones out there somewhere. I just know if the people say something isn't right then it's most likely not. If I had a shelter I would help. I have personally been around a lot of homeless people. It doesn't bother me to help out. Maybe if you stayed in one like the people told these people to then you would understand. Bring kids mention something about your deceased wife and having only that article left and see if it's not in a trash bin when you come back for what reason you don't know. Let them treat you however they want to treat you because your loved one passed and your suddenly on your own. If I'm wrong or you think everyone is wrong. I have been kicked out of 1 for reading a wrong bible scripture, another because I showed up 2 minutes late, another one because I didn't know the rules and I folded up my dirty clothes and put them under the bunk where they obviously wasn't supposed to go, another one I had to call the cops because they stole my personal information with my clothes and that one went and told the other one who kicked me out for reading the wrong scripture told her not to house me. I have been in lots of shelters. They do whatever they want. They steal donations and from clients all the time. They do lots of stuff to people. Go find out for yourself like you tell everyone else. Maybe it will make sense.
This place needs an audit. Somethings seems as though the shelter is not wanting any simblance of oversight. As soon as you hear "government grant" it should make your ears perk up.
I would recommend to that mayor to find someone she can trust, have them wired with camera and sound, have them go in for a night declaring they are homeless and then see the outcome. I bet they are hiding something they didn't want her to witness.
I really want to know what you think theses people are hiding? Do you open your home for homeless Americans to get out of the weather? Have you complained about the government putting up illegals in hotels and feeding them, while there are homeless Americans. Have you asked why all these illegals have been welcomed into our Country when we can't house our own American citizens first? Make it make sense people.🙄
I've been homeless and have actually worked and stayed at numerous homeless shelters. Each shelter always has at least one, sometimes two workers who intentionally abuse and mistreat the homeless, while there coworkers and peers look the other way. A hard choice to make on whether to say something back to them when it's 30 degrees out on a cold snowy day. Then there's the "Christian" run shelters. I seen one who uses the homeless as "free labor". Such as setting up and running yard sales from donated goods. It's mandatory. Except if you're disabled like I was. I wasn't treated nicely at all afterwards. Don't want to do it? You're restricted for 30 days. A lot of these shelters run different programs, where upon completion they get a job at the shelter, usually at the check in desk. They have very little diplomacy and or people skills. Zero conflict resolution skills as well. Some shelters can be very dangerous, especially in the bigger cities. Homelessness can happen to anyone, even you. IF you ever have to stay at one, stay to your self and be invisible as much as possible. Make a workable plan on getting back to your feet. Sorry for the long post. A lot of people comment on these stories but never has stepped foot in a homeless shelter.
Oh how horrible! They expect you to lift things and move chairs. I've never worked a day in my life and had everthing handed to me...NOT. Your attitude is the reason you are homeless.
@@yvonnephillips3888 Can not anyone read? I'm not homeless, and have been in my apartment for a year and a half now. All in a matter of 5 years. Don't forget about experiencing severe PTSD with flashbacks daily on top of it all. Looks like the mayor called the bluff But what prompted the mayor taking The supervisor's (I assume) come if you want invitation? What was the initial problem being addressed at the town hall or review board? Is that full video available?
Let me ask you, did you bring a bed or was you going to take some homeless person's bed. She said they were plenty of beds, yes maybe at that time, what if other women came later and she was taking a bed from someone who really needed it.
If you're going to be a rule follower (I couldn't just lie and tell them I was homeless), then you have to follow the rules (Federal Grant rules for the shelter).
Next time go undercover- show up looking & smelling homeless then you will get treated the same as the actual homeless. Also, unless the weather is bad the shelter will not be full. Any shelter that has a sobriety requirement is almost always under capacity.
I don’t think that was a story, or the story, I believe there was some political motives on both sides. Mayor was pandering, officials at the shelter using an excuse, a correct excuse but for the purpose of strong arming someone they don’t share political views with. I will say for the mayor to just show up and say I want to stay the night was not good planning on her part.
I think shelter asked her to leave because homeless behavior is unpredictable and they didn't want her to get targeted. It's a dog eat dog world amongst the homeless, you get beaten up and rape, even killed; all this while you sleep. For her protection, liability issues, and safety ; they don't want her to stay at shelter overnight! Theft is also high and committed while the person is sound asleep. As told to me by other homeless individuals living in a shelter .
Volunteering taught me the same thing. Sane homeless people do not stay in the shelters, associate with the other homeless, or listen to "advocates". They use the resources, find out it's a dead end, and find a way on their own. The drug addicts and criminals stay in the homeless system. Unhoused find a way to work around it.
"The individuals have to self-claim that they are homeless," the executive director said. Evidently, the mayor checked in and announced that she is the mayor who obviously isn't a homeless individual. So, the mayor screwed up but is now trying to make the shelter look bad.
Totally out of touch. Why the hell would anyone with a house want to take and occupy a bed intended for those without a home especially in winter time. And the lady that suggested it should be made to live for a week on the streets so she learns what the homeless really need!
@somuchbaloney6283 you're an fool. First I didn't rate it up or down and secondly I suppose you support the mayor taking away a bed that's meant for a homeless individual that needs it to stay warm and or dry. You're totally out of touch and what's wrong with this country today!
Why is anyone shocked that a homeless shelter would not allow someone who isn't homeless to stay there? Homeless people dont want looky loos staying at the shelter. Besides, as they say, their funding conditoons dont allow it.
@BarkerZero That woman was most certainly not a representative of the shelter. She would have known that only homeless people can stay at the homeless shelter if she was. Its called a HOMELESS shelter. I used to run the front desk at our local shelter. It was not uncommon for middle class men to try to stay the night looking for vulnerable sugar babies who needed somewhere to stay. Of course, that wasn't the mayor's intent, but there are reasons why these rules exist. If you want to know what staying at the shelter is like, ask homeless people.
@@scrumbles how do we know if she was or wasn't a representative of a homeless shelter? The video doesn't say so we can't assume. Of course their will be cases of people exploiting homeless shelters, as well as homless shelters exploiting homeless folk, but that's not what the video is about - the video is about the mayor being invited to stay at a homeless shelter by someone, who then gets rejected trying to experience what homeless people experience to (i'm assuming) further decision making.
Grants can be a tricky thing, so from an administrative standpoint, they made the right call. Especially when it's someone like the foremost municipal official. It would have been part of public record. Well-intentioned or not, it could have seen that shelter shut down if she'd have been allowed to stay the night. Outreach is good, though, and hopefully she can find other means to directly communicate with that part of the community.
She needs to camouflage herself to look like a "homeless" person, and stay the night. Just wondering if " they" didn't want her to see the "goings on" in there?!
The fact that the place wasn't full is suspicious. They're definitely hiding some illicit activities or don't want her to see how they're spending the money they get to run the place. Something's fishy. I'd start an investigation or audit if I was her.
The people staying there deserve dignity. They dont need to be filmed for a political stunt. She has done so much to negatively impact her people. Dont let this fool you.
I don’t think she planned to “film” her stay. I can understand why you might think this is a political stunt, but I can also understand how a civic leader would want to understand what her house less citizens experience at the shelter.
@brianfergus839 where was she two years ago when social services were being segregated and long time locals were suffering? It's a political stunt. Her areas demographic is changing so she needs to appear like she cares to appeal to the masses. Look into her history. Don't let this fool you.
@@brianfergus839she took cards for them to fill out. And you don't know that she would not have gone back with cameras if he first visit gave her clout.
If she and other members were given an open invitation to spend a night there by a member of the organization, then the mayor is correct. If she wasn't taking a bed away from another individual that needed it, she had the right to be there. She didn't come with a camera crew to document it. She was asked to come and spend the night. I'm also pretty sure that there wasn't a request to ask before hand to request to come on a certain date. I wouldn't trust them if they did. They should have a typical day there; not one where the staff had time to primp and pamper the place up and keep out individuals that are a problem.
If they are kicking the Mayor out of their shelter that quickly, especially by someone high up the chain, then clearly something is not right or legal about the shelter. I used to stay at the DESC in Seattle before the city shut it down. A lot of folks relied on it for shelter in the cold months, but the staff there really didn't care about the place. They let it get dirty, they let it get infested. The washer and dryer were infested with bed bugs because they refused to use the right cleaners and temperatures. If someone crapped themselves all over the floor they took their time getting around to it. They let people bring in bug infested animals. I felt sorry for one poor cat because you could see the lice and bugs in its fur and how much pain the cat was in. If you are a city or state official and you want to see how a shelter really operates, go looking like you belong there and don't tell people who you are.
If there is space and you are in administration a special rule should allow someone to stay to learn when can be done to improve the situation. Unless they know where you live they dont know if you are housed.
People here are saying this was a stunt. She is not a professional politician. It was not her idea. She was asked to do this. She is one of the few that cares about people. Also, she did not show up with a camera crew.

The mayor obviously didn't follow the correct protocol to receive a bed. Instead, she broadcast "Woo, woo, look at me. I'm the mayor and SO committed to the citizens that I'm going to spend the night in this homeless shelter even though I'm not homeless." The mayor should have gone in without announcing who she is. But now she's trying to make the shelter look bad when it was her own fault.

It's her own fault she got kicked out but now she's blaming the shelter. So much for personal accountability. I hope she isn't re-elected.
They have limited resources, it’s for those in need, not a tourist destination for politicians that want publicity. Just a stunt for attention.
Well said! And there’s no clarity to be gained as someone who is obviously not homeless thinking one night will give them insight into others plight. The typical elitist arrogance thinly veiled as concern and compassion is distrusting.

How bad they are, what do you mean? Are you opening up your house to let people come in from winter weather? @christopheringraham9292 😂🤣😅I have been in the streets for 8 years. I don't commit crimes,I do not use drug's, I do volunteer work for food giveaways and different places trying to keep my resume active in between jobs.
You as a government employee can go there and volunteer or go there and observe overnight, that's b.S more to this story sounds like
I would recommend to that mayor to find someone she can trust, have them wired with camera and sound, have them go in for a night declaring they are homeless and then see the outcome.
Make it make sense people.🙄
Should tell you all you need to know about this place
I'll bet she didn't go incognito 😮
Homelessness happens to people who keep making bad decisions. No sympathy from my part, enjoy the life you've set up for yourself. 😂
So get a job and rent. Sheesh
I actually got an income and an apartment. Been in it for almost 2 years now. Don't feel so smug now do you? ✋🤪🤚

Let me ask you, did you bring a bed or was you going to take some homeless person's bed. She said they were plenty of beds, yes maybe at that time, what if other women came later and she was taking a bed from someone who really needed it.
You all have no idea what goes on in these places
It's called homeless.
That is just horrible. Maybe wanted to see what is going on. Don't really know 🤔

Could be a privacy issue
The Pacific Garden Mission in Chicago have been around for over 140 years. It's safe & clean if you need help give it a try.
"The individuals have to self-claim that they are homeless," the executive director said. Evidently, the mayor checked in and announced that she is the mayor who obviously isn't a homeless individual. So, the mayor screwed up but is now trying to make the shelter look bad.
Unfortunately not all shelters are truly good. They're probably afraid you'll find out what they're really all about. All That Glitters Is Not Gold.

Besides, as they say, their funding conditoons dont allow it.
at 00:52 the mayor is invited to stay there, so maybe that's where the shock is?
@TheSoremoose thank you

She took cards for guests to fill out.
They didn't want to keep dealing with her arrogance.
You are failing projection here.
She was asked to do this and you want to give her shit for agreeing.
Its not a hotel

What the hell? The mayor was kicked out
Spending the night at a shelter doesn’t give you any clue what it is like to be homeless and scared. She is trolling homeless women.
