I remember young me drawing Spirit out of proportions, e.g. Big head, small neck, bony legs and dear grace the square hooves! and I somehow decided to colour him purple.
This is what first got me into drawing horses about five years ago, I had always watched this after I'd watched the movie, but I finally decided to try it myself. Now I have a slightly different style, but I still use the leg up pose a lot and sometimes use these tactics for the anatomy. I've even tried making small animations of horses
My family had the VHS for Spirit and I remember watching this bit all the time!! The interlude music, the inflection on some of the words.... it gave me so much nostalgia. I tried this so many times and always failed miserably. I’m in art school now (not for animation, I don’t have the patience haha!) and looking back this has so many insights into the fundamentals of drawing for just some bit for kids. Using geometric shapes to simplify the skeleton and adding muscle later, even just the concept of starting broad and adding details later, is an incredibly important principle that we take for granted sometimes. And I see just how important these little experiences actually were in my journey as an artist. Stuff like this taught me from a very young age how to approach and break down the process of drawing. And it would make me practice over and over and over again, even though it never turned out how I wanted. Perhaps ironically, I’m not going into a drawing heavy field (graphic design), but believe me, drawing is at the heart of every creative profession. I truly believe every thing I created, including all the really bad Spirit drawings, led me to where I am today. In a few weeks I will be presenting my designs to Google! Sometimes I forget how long I’ve been at this. Thanks James Baxter, for making my childhood and making me a better artist :)
I drew horses ever since I saw this movie.... This movie inspires my inner artist. I love this movie and love this tutorial! Really helped me learn to draw horses. I haven't stopped drawing them since.
Guys Guys Guys When I was like 5 years old, I would watch these tutorials over and over on the special features of the Spirit DVD. And I never stopped drawing. This guy is literally my childhood hero. I only found out a few days ago that he's worked on some of my favorite pieces of animation, namely the Prince of Egypt. This man's job is my dream job. I just...I'm gushing because of how great he is and because he's kinda where I started and stuff. Great blast from the past.
Spirit was the reason I started and continued to draw and it was THIS BONUS FEATURE that helped me so much. I didn't realize that James Baxter was the one in this video!
im a rlly good horse drawer and this is helping me learn new techniques. well what i do is draw a horse in each art style that i know and then combine them and set in my mind which technique goes where to make my pictures look better. the part when the person drawing does spirits head and mane, i learnt from that now my pictures look much better. thank u so much for uploading this! :D
THis video made me start drawing when I was a kid. Nowadays I´m a profesional artist and I life out of drawing and art. Love this film and love this video. Thank you so Much!!!.
Lol I remember having DVD and watching this when I was so young. Tried coping James Baxter tutorial drawing. I manage to do the drawing really well for my age at that time haha.
Grell Sutcliff don’t give up it takes practice if you don’t succeed try try again you never know what you can do unless you try I was where you were but I’m not going to give up
SO your the animator of spirit? awsome i love spirit its my faverout film i watched it about 153 time at least .Iknow every thing about spirit i really love the horse and i not bad at drawing him :)
they need to make a second movie like rain has a foal suddenly humans come to there home and build some things ans spirit goest around messing things up and reclaims his home
I do agree that Dreamworks should do more 2d cartoon films. I'm not really a fan of a lot of their 3d work tbh. The atmosphere in a 2d cartoon just feels like always a lot more work, care, love and humanly touch has gone into it, even if that isn't 100% accurate. That's how it feels. Can't watch a cartoon now without thinking "Imagine how long it took them to draw all those frames."
Sorry but there isn't really going to be a spirit 2, instead dreamworks made a Netflix show called spirit riding free which in my opinion it totally SUCKS!
@SoutaEvee i so agree with you and i hate new disney movies such as "Hannah Montana" and crap i love Lion King, Bambi and Fox and the Hound.... but you made a teeney mistake.... Spirit is "Dreamworks" movie :S
You know, circles never helped me. Just made my horses look pregnant. I just kept looking at horses, and the more I drew the better I got. I draw pretty good now, though I haven't drawn a horse in weeks. I'm trying out dogs and cats now. =P
I almost own every poster, toys, breckables, etc. I LOV THIS MOVIE. they should make a second I've made a movie of wht it should be but my mom won't let me send it in to dreamworks.
Such a good animator and teacher. His appearance in Adventure Time was so random and amazing.

@@snowstarsparkle hahahaha you're right, 1+23! It's never late to be corrected, thanks.
This video on the DVD is the reason I ever started drawing in the first place when I was like 5. Thank you so much, James Baxter.

Sure is an ADVENTURE when ever you spend TIME with James Baxter.
I'm still trying to get the hang of drawing horses, but thanks to James, I have a much better idea of how a horse looks and how a horse's body bends.
I'm glad for that ol' feller, he inspired me to draw horses like that. Good guy! ^^
Aaah it's so nice to finally understand what he's saying, wish i could understand English when i was a kid that would be a lot easier
