James Baxter Animation Reel

- Note: Found out 1:05-1:10 is actually animated by Kristof Serrand.
A compilation of animation by James Baxter I made for my blog post about him: hobbessakuga.wordpress.com/20...
The song is Emile Pandolfi’s cover of Beauty and the Beast.
Baxter is a British animator who worked for Disney in the 90s and currently works at DreamWorks.
Baxter was the supervising animator for these characters in the video:
Beast
Belle
Rafiki
Quasimodo
Giselle
Prince Edward & his horse
Spirit
Moses
All the animation in the Kung Fu Panda opening
Everything in the pencil test animations
James Baxter the Horse
I’m pretty sure that Baxter animated all of these cuts but it’s possible that I’ve made mistakes. If anyone has info about other animators doing shots in the video, please tell me so I can credit them.

The list of where each clip is from, and the name of the song used, is in the description.
Also, you can press "." and "," to go through the animations frame by frame.
To go frame by frame with the comma and period buttons, the video first has to be paused. Also, if you want to do rapid frame-by-frame to easily see differences between multiple frames in a row, I recommend dropping the video quality to 360 or lower. 720 and higher, moving between frames lags more.
It took me a long time to learn about this of UA-cam. Thanks for pinning a comment about it, Hobbes Sakuga! :)
I'm on Mobile ,':)
love u
If people are also learning this for the first time, then here's some more controls: [J] rewinds by 10 seconds, [K] pauses the video, [L] fast forwards 10 seconds and pressing [shift] with the frame buttons [ , ] & [ . ] slows down & speeds up the playing speed
Can’t forget my boy glen keen
"the animation is so smooth! did you use 3d?"
"no, we used james baxter "
we "baxtered" this animation.
No.. Please
Who needs 3D when you can have JB
We need to name an animation program in his honor.
Rafael Iasbeck Dalcol Adobe Baxter
James Baxter wasn't just a disney animator, he is THE disney animator
But also worked on many non-Disney films at dreamworks!
Don’t forget Aaron Blaise. I don’t think he worked on _as_ many movies though.
Didnt he also do something in Steven Universe? The scene with the diamonds, or is that a different disney guy
Maureen K When the Pink Steven and Normal Steven did the spinning hug thing, that’s also James Baxter.
Ohhhhh.... whenever I see the name James Baxter I just think of the horse from adventure time. But this makes a lot of sense
Adventure Time dedicated TWO FULL EPISODES, to a character named James Baxter, animated by James Baxter, explicitly so the writers and VAs could literally spend both episodes gushing about how great James Baxter is, how much his work brightens everyone's day, how much they love him and how great a guy he is.
true
never thought of this
james backster truly is amazimg tho
Nobody can quite animate horses like James Baxter.
Rychoo he talks about it a fair bit in the behind the scenes for Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron. He and the other animators spent a lot of time seeing real horses and studying he way they move. Horses are hard enough to draw, let alone animate. He really does animate them wonderfully.
Jaaaaames Baxter
Rychoo
No one animated horses like -(Gaston)- James Baxter!
@Lolbama2012
I had no idea he animated in Spirit! That’s like one of my favs
james baxter is pretty much a demigod
Nah he is a *_GOD_*

He is a *_MEGA GOD_*

ok, I was thinking about Adventure Times "James Baxter"...the horse
Which is obviously the most awesome thing ever.
You guys should read how he came about in the show. It's great
CVerse I did. It’s something else.
Btw, He animated a segment in Steven universe from their latest episode
@@motorcycleman115 yeah I saw. Probably why these reels are getting more views rn lol
CVerse I’m interested, where do I read this?
It's so strange seeing this. Every time I watched the Gravity Falls intro, I always noticed how smooth and beautifully animated Dipper was in that second of animation. I never would've guessed that it was made by Baxter!
If you see very fluid and smooth western animation chances are it was made by James Baxter
i _gasped_ when i saw that lmaoo it's probably the only thing i remember really vividly about the intro :,)
Same I should’ve known!! That part, and when they’re at the campfire and Stan wiggles his fingers in a spooky motion always stuck with me even before I started watching the show just a few weeks ago lol!
You should always assume it's made my Baxter. ALWAYS.
he also animated the pterosaur (or i guess pterodactyl as they call it in the show) in the dinosaur episode
Prince of Egypt, highly underrated
DREAMWORKS SHOT THEMSELVES IN THE FACE SWITCHING TO 3D ANIMATION!
Seriously.
Prince of Egypt and El Dorado are prime examples.
agreed! their 2D animations mixed with a little 3D was their charm and selling point. now it's just pure 3D. Prince of Egypt, Road to Eldorado, Sinbad, and Iron Giant were amazing!
@@mattphariss I don't think it was the animations themselves, it was just bad timing. Anyone going up against Disney might falter in sales
@@LittleParade_ and considering Disney was a powerhouse of animation way back in the 1930s. who could blame Dreamworks?
Disney's 2d animation was also dying. Dreamworks's best hits are all 3D. Outside of a few gems like prince of egypt
I miss 2-D feature-length animations :,c
mayawilliams35 Me too :/
CG animation is cheaper, faster, and easier than hand-drawn, and will always lack the fluidity of it.
guilherme barbosa song of the sea! Watch it!
Disney Studios are now cash-grabbing scumbags. Remaking shit into live-action
Me too
Isn’t this the horse from Adventure Time that stood on a beach ball neighing his name?
He is the Horse from Adventure Time, he animated and voiced James Baxter the Horse
Komala The Faboolas
Even the horses name James baxter is his real name XP
are you high?
@@judeconnor-macintyre9874 , no, he is low
@LOWFRAMEBLOX low in term of iron
So basically, if you want a flawlessly beautiful animation, James Baxter is the man?
Depends on what you want. If it's character animation, James is pretty much the best there is.
He's the master of fluid character movement and beautiful moving perspectives
You just animate things with consistency, movement, and more frames
@@DuskLegend more frames ≠ smooth and flawless.
@@Jaeeden yeah, more frames can actually make flaws that would otherwise go unnoticed much more apparent
James is the only one who can draw a horse
*W I T H O U T A R E F E R E N C E*
Yeaaaah, now that's pretty godly
You clearly haven't heard of Aron blaise and Kim Jung GI
big oof I’m not really sure on what your going with this, but he did actually used reference, which was watching horses and see how they moved.
he used a lot of references.you don't get movement like that without a reference.
also spirit is actually based on a real mustang called the spanish mustang(they are descents of the first horses ever brought to the americas and are actually very rare).
Woosh
I'm here because he animated a scene in Steven Universe and oh my god he animated all of that??
Gotta get this dude to animate Horse Amethyst STAT
YES he's legendary!!
It would be great if he animated the steven universe movie
Of course he did! I really don't even know any one else who can top his incredible work
Yesss oh my God he is the reason why I am the way I am today!!! 😭😭😂😂
Damn. These were some of my favorite scene in animation. Didn't even know it was all animated by this same guy.
Tbh If you told me he did all this I still wouldn't believe you, but this proof me wrong down under
He’s just a Horse on a beach ball making people smile
Excuse me, however all his work is fantastic, Kung Fu Panda intro at 2:25 IS PURE AWESOMENESS.
Same. Agree 200%.
And I would add the background music in the video at that part is totally unapropiate. Made me went to the KFP soundtrack to tune me in.
I didn't even know he animated those sequences until now
Am I the only one who thinks the whole movie should've been animated like that? Kung fu panda has great animation don't get me wrong but I honestly prefer the 2d style. It's a lot more aesthetically pleasing.
@@G_-ue9bq you should watch Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Scroll.
That part at 3:29... Look at those ruffles! They're so bouncy!
Why did I expect a bag of potato chips lol
they look like they were 3d rendered they're so good
yeahh
how the fk did he animate that holy shit just getting one squiggly line right is annoying for me
i love disney all but after finding out his name was james baxter after watching steven universe, i just thought "that horse from adventure time?"
It makes sense.
That horse was not only named after him but he animated said horse.
Anthony Rodriguez didn’t he voice him too?
This man animated most of my childhood and I’m just now finding out about him because of Steven Universe.
W H A T.
hardcore respect for animating on 1s compared to the eastern style.
the James Baxter can also maintain the 3D look of the character extremely well.
You say that like classic American cartoons weren't also animated on 3s
Ugh- the FPS- our animation department is having a wet dream rn from this
tell connor i said hi
ahahahaha
Why did this make me cry so hard??? My dream job is to be an animator/work in animation and this video just brings back all the emotions and childhood nostalgia that made me want to pursue art in the first place
Jessica Herz SSAAAMMMEEE
SAMMME OMFG EVERYTHING YOU SAID IS MEEEE
Same bro
Honestly this has so much pure talent and skill, it’s inspirational to those outside the animation field: I can only imagine the inspiration for you animators
it isn't too late to pursue what you wanna do. took me 5-6 years (and many jobs unrelated to animation) before i was accepted for animation training this year.
Baxter has such a genuinely deep understanding of weight and gravity and *texture* regarding his animations, and how the shapes of a figure take up the 3d space, but most fascinatingly how to move those characters through space while at the same time changing the view point. It's all so dynamic and ethereal, not so much perfectly imitating realistic movement as it is improving upon it. He's extremely skilled.
When witnessing a sculpture by Michelangelo, I remember staring at the fluidity of the clothes and marvelling how any human being could create such intricate beauty from so stiff a source. It's a similar feeling with James Baxter.
“Soo...All those smooth animations were by James Baxter”
“Always has been”
Whenever I feel discouraged and stressed out over my animation and light/optics classes I rewatch some of Baxter’s demos and think about how he probably went through the same pain at some point. I want to be able to animate that smoothly some day, I just need to keep going.
You got this buddy! I believe in you!❤
Some of his scenes from Who Framed Roger Rabbit include Smartass the lead weasel saying "I'll hang you and your laundry out to dry", Greasy the weasel in the green suit dropping the bricks on Roger, and Jessica picking up Roger followed by them walking into the sunset.
He also did a few scenes of Scar from The Lion King, when he tells Simba "no one ever means for these things to happen" and when he circles around Simba guilt tripping him.
And for The Little Mermaid he did a few scenes of Ariel and her father King Triton particularly the argument scene, he isn't too proud of the way he drew Ariel when she says "Daddy I love him!".
Thanks! I included that shot of scar circling Simba in my Andreas Deja video, didn't realise it was Baxter. Given how good he is at rotation it makes sense that he would have done it. Where did you get the info btw? I heard him talk about the Ariel and Roger Rabbit scenes in a podcast. Is the Lion King info from a podcast as well?
Hobbes Sakuga From a video interview on Vimeo, they talk about at the 7:11 mark here: vimeo.com/69867353
Thanks again! I wish info like this was more easy to find.
Hobbes Sakuga James has a tumblr page if you want to ask him personally, that's how I found out which scenes he animated in the Roger Rabbit short Tummy Trouble
The very few rare scenes actually in Disney's history. when he circles around Simba guilt tripping him. Disney rarely animates the camera to turn. But there they drawed Simba from different angles instead of scar just walking around him while simba and backround staying still. But Richard Williams was the genius who perfected that animating camera angle changes.
He's done all this stuff? Beauty and the Beast, Gravity Falls, Kung Fu Panda, Adventure Time, Prince of Egypt? Seriously this man a legend!
Honestly, by how fluid he made his animations the dance scene from Beauty and the Beast looked like it was cgi-ed it was just that good
I can’t stop hearing the Horse say, “James Baxter” over and over again
"Jaaaames Baxter"
- James Baxter the Horse performed by James Baxter.
Omg that’s why dippers animation in the opening is literally smoother than anything I’ve ever seen
At 1:31 when we were watching the story of Moses in my 9th grade history class I was the only one watching it cause the animation and art was so good
ÜS4 what the scene when the song the plagues played
I also watched it in my 9th grade history class.
Me: *Sees Prince of Egypt*
Me: W O A H
That ballroom scene from Beauty and The Beast is extraordinary. The way he's not only animate movement but also scales for the camera angle. This man is a treasure.
holy shit so many unforgettable scenes
thanks to adventure time I´ll always say his name in that exact voice
Hold the frick up! James Baxter the horse from Adventure Time was named after a guy who animated him?! Well that's some cool shiz
Yeah, he animated himself in Adventure Time
Anyone know what the Otter character is from?
Did Baxter really animate the James Baxter character from adventure time?!
James did the Otter animation for a lecture at CalArts (you can see where each clip is from in the description). And yeah he animated himself in Adventure Time.
Hobbes Sakuga Hahaha thats awesome- I wish the Otter was a developed character from something, I really like the design
It really looks like one of my own characters so who knows!

when I first saw the adventure Time episode I was like who's James Baxter? I was like fuck that animation is amazing it must be 3d
Thank you for putting this together. It's great to see how my favorite animator left an impact through so many films. He taught my first drawing lesson: how to draw Spirit (movie bonus feature) in which I practiced and played on repeat until I started to draw my own things. I recently discovered most of his other works: Belle, Rafiki, Moses, Quasimodo... and would love to meet him someday to tell him how appreciative I am of his work.
Absolutely love his animations they are so full of life and tell a story without even saying anything
This man evokes pure envy among his peers, his work is so beautiful
2:45 beautiful music timing
Disney producers: ok so how many 2d animations frames you would like to do
James Baxter: *yes*
I only knew James Baxter by that episode in Adventure Time. But then I recalled that they did in honour of a real animator called James Baxter. Just wow
Butch "I made your childhood" Hartman brags about successfully pitching two shows I watched growing up, while James Baxter silently animated my childhood and then some
I miss traditional 2D animation, James is a god when it comes to animation.
BOY DO I HAVE NEWS FOR YOU
www.cbr.com/don-bluth-studio-renaissance-hand-drawn-animation/
@@EtamirTheDemiDeer i hope its true, i really want 2d traditional animation to come back!
This was all painstakingly drawn by hand...
I do stop motion but I can’t imagine the amount of work that would be needed to pull this off....
Fun fact: The scene in the Prince of Egypt of Moses meeting God was animated out of James Baxter's memory of being bestowed his animation gifts
This man is from another galaxy
For a time I only knew him as a horse from Adventure Time but after seeing this video I can see what impact he left on the animation Community as a whole, Truly an incredible artist😊❤
fun fact for any Steven Universe fan.
He also animated the pink Steven scenes in "change your mind" in 2018/2019. Yeah THAT guy.
Such talent!
You are not the only one...
Not all the scenes, but only the Steven's fusion
I was wondering about that scene and I replayed it so many times cuz I it just looked so smooth and beautiful even compared to the rest of the episode.
wow! really? THATS AWESOME
It's amazing how he can draw so well with those hooves
I clicked on this video because I felt like I recognized the name James Baxter, but then I remembered that was the name of the horse from Adventure time. I didn't realize however that James Baxter was an actual person, let alone the fact that he animated tons of iconic disney movies and the cartoon segments in Kung Fu Panda. I now have mad respect for James Baxter
Spirit has the best drawn animation hands down, no changing my mind!
Wow, I can’t imagine how many sketched went into this, not to mention the amount of frames. Amazing.
I swear, James Baxter's work are always present in every animated show I've watched and its not only Disney. He's a genius at animating, its almost like he's a wizard who can turn 2D drawing into life.
The way he animates flowy things like hair and clothing is so natural. Super clean.
James Baxter was the first 3D software
I love how he do the 3d effect in 2d. He has an amazing space vision
Oh SHIT James Baxter animated those scenes in Enchanted!? NO WONDER IT'S SO SMOOTH GODDAMN
Man
I would totally watch an animated series animated by this guy
I still can't believe that James Baxter the horse, is a real person
The way he animates is so fluid and has so much life and the way he uses angles it’s like MMMM
So this is why the horse in Adventure Time keep saying James Baxter when he is walking underneath a beach ball.
We may never be like him. But I sure as hell would love to get to animate like this.
James Baxter: Horses
Milt Kahl: Head wiggles
Didn’t know a horse could animate, especially this well…
It makes me so happy that he uploads his work to his UA-cam channel, and now all the kids who grew up watching his work can thank him for the fond memories he created for them now that they’re adults.
I will always treasure this man's work.
Thanks or sharing!
(FYI: The two versions of horseman shot from 1:05 to 1:10 were animated by Kristof Serrand.)
Thanks! I'll credit him. Are you this Antoine Antin?
www.imdb.com/name/nm1469185/
Thanks for Kristof!
And yes, I am. ;)
Antoine Antin u are a good animator, maybe u can make some tutorials?
Seeing the burning bush scene was animated by Baxter explains so much. My favourite scene in one of the best movies I've ever seen ❤
it's the fact that he can make the animation go so smoothly and i am just in awe. what a talent
So he basically animated The Prince Of Egypt on his own
This man was such a huge part of my childhood... he created so many things that I would sit and watch for hours and hours on end.
And I didn’t even know his name until a week ago!!
I wish Mr. Baxter made animation classes or a book like Richard Williams' Animator's Survival Kit. I love his art
James Baxter the horse was always a personal favorite episode of mine from Adventure Time, I didn’t know until recently that James Baxter animated James Baxter. Pretty cool.
Nobody:
James Baxter: *horse*
So good. Alive. Volumes so solid.
James Baxter is a part not just our childhood, but our loves. And now that I realize it, it's amazing to me. No one is quite like he is.
I never know this was Jams animations.
The guy truly made my childhood ❤
His my hero.
🧀
So beautiful
Isn’t James Baxter that horse from Adventure Time- OHHHH
It’s crazy how many of these scenes are the only ones that I remember because they were so beautifully made. James Baxter is a legend indeed.
It makes me cry, this man has incredible ammounts of knowledge in how things move and behave
He can make any drawing seemingly come to life, in a way that is very believable
The charm with each frame. The love and care he breathes into the whole reel.
2D Animation is a rare talent to have in this day of age. I aspire to someday reach this level and make a reel of my own
The magic he puts into his work is incredible, very skillfully done. I especially admire his horses, my GOD they're gorgeous
HE DID THAT SCENE FROM SON OF EGYPT WTF
3:41 HOLD UP. This man animated for the Gravity Falls Opening???!!!
James needs to be the lead animator. Not for a specific company or animation, just in general. He should be in charge of all animation
I almost want to throw up knowing how long it took to do all this. My god the amount of time to do just a couple seconds of animation is mind boggling.
Amazing... that clip of a weezel! I knew it long time ago!
Someone: ¿how smooth is going to be the animation?
James Baxter: yes
Makes 2D look 3D amazing

those mad skillz. animating stuff so expressive and making it look effortless in the process
With people like James Baxter, handdrawn animation still has hope of remaining on earth in such pristine quality.
I thought I recognised that Steven Universe kinda death and rebirth by fusing with him mum style was farmiliar
