  • Golf instructor Craig Hanson analysis two completely different golf swings. Ryan Moore and Miguel Jimenez. And shows that there really is no substitute for talent.
Most club golfers swinging back like these guys would have absolutely no chance of finding a correct impact position, but talent is a great thing! Check out the recovery moves they both make! And how they return to great impact positions.

Miguel's swing has certainly stood the test of time. All time most appearances on the european tour now with 707.

Most players that loop the club (steep backswing, shallow downswing) are better than non-loopers at returning the hands and shaft to the original position and plane at impact. Good examples are Nick Price and Sergio Garcia.

I've used Ryan Moore's swing mechanics many years ago way before he was on tour takes a lot of work but its very effective especially in the short game. PGA Ed Sabo teaches similar mechanics.

Good analysis, one key is they both still initially start the club up instead of back. That seems to be a key fundemental for all good players.

Thanks for posting this fascinating video, Craig. It confirms that the moment of truth and not what leads up it is what counts. Another viewer's point about Moore's swing not holding up as he gets older is a valid one. Similarly, as Lee Trevino got older, he wasn't able to generate the tremendous leg drive that he needed to square up the club face in the context of an outside the line move back and shut club face at the top.

Jack Tors If Mr. Trevino had only played the Senior Tour he still would have made it to the Hall Fame! His swing still holds up to this day. He plays at our club here in Dallas, Texas. Let's not forget Mr. Trevino was struck by lightning on two separate occasions😕 In spite of that his legs/swing were strong enough to win tournaments into his late 60's!

At 3:19 I think the analysis might be incorrect, relatively speaking. His right arm is moving downward, but compared to his torso and his hips, it's actually moving out, not in. From a fixed camera, it appears to be moving inward. But if you're actually making the swing, it would feel as if it's moving out/back since your only point of reference is your torso.

It's funny to compare Jiminez at 4:18 with Moore at 5:32 -- shafts both perfectly bisect the right forearm -- maybe that's all that really matters?

Off course but over 80% of the public can't do it ...60 million golfers in the world. And somewhere between 42-48 million come in to steep!!!!!!! Master your Golf website is coming look out for this one !!!

NIce analysis Craig. Just goes to show, it's that 6 inches through the ball that matters. Oh, and the six inches between the ears.

Moore's swing is a prime example of making the golf swing as complex as humanly possible. I can't imagine that swing working in his older years..

    • @CraigHansonGolf

The mechanics of this swing are not easy to repeat but possible. There is more than one way but for most people there is a easier way. It depends on your abilty most people swinging like this couldnt hit the side of a barn. But if it works for you thats great.Tthat means you have a very unorthodox swing but you can repeat it.And normal golfers that compare themselves to the most talented and say hey it works i swing like this i find that a exception to the rule but this swing is not being taught it just shows the examples that we dont all need to swing text book to play good.

I remember watching Miguel play at firestone probably 15 years ago and thinking how the hell does he hit it so well with that looping inside action like that? Looks so uncomfortable. They say he hardly practices too.

Hi Jeff, yeah it’s amazing ability isn’t it. What a great player !! I have heard also that he didn’t practice that much and played more on the course ... why practice when you flush it ha ha ha .. you only end up with injuries

Moore is taking the piss haha. One thing I don't like about these videos is that the players stock shot shape needs to be initially addressed aswell as saying whether he is playing his stock shot or he could be playing a totally different shape (high fader playing a lower draw etc)

These guys and others such as Furyk prove the backswing really isn't that important. They all pretty much look the same on the downswing and impact. I personally take the club inside and over the top/across the line on the backswing but then bring it down on plane. I've been working for months to fix this and I just can't seem to get it right. I'm thinking about giving up and just accepting my swing for what it is. I'm a single digit handicapper so why bother changing things. If someone has an easy fix for me I'll try it, otherwise I think I'll just accept that my swing for what it is.

Its interesting what you wrote there James .Crossing the line is without a doubt in my opinion the hardest of all changes and sometimes not even worth attempting .
Is it worth changing ? Or trying ? Are you really satisfied ? There is a great pleasure obtained in improving .
Most people do neeed a good backswing to have any chance or returning to a decent impact . Some change their backswing and dont improve anyway !! But normally a takeaway thats inside remains in the short game where we dont always have enough swing for the neccessary correction .
Thats why its important to find yourself a top teacher with experience.

Tiger dominated the masters in 97 with an across the line swing. He fixed it after by shortening his swing which is kind of cheating it in a way. I kind of wonder how good he would have been if he just kept his 2000 swing and stopped obsessing over it. I think he would've been better than he has been. He wasted a lot of time with swing changes. I work so I don't have that kind of time to make drastic changes to my swing. Maybe I'll just shortened my backswing and work on taking it back on plane little by little and see where it takes me.
