Honestly you summarise exactly WHY Lower Decks is such a great thing. They really refer to the absurdity of this stuff happening ALL the time: (ensigns log: the captain got taken over by an ancient alien mask... AGAIN)
I remember reading one Star Trek book by Peter David, "Q, Squared", I believe, and the crew has an outside observer from the Federation show up for that exact reason, to question the crew and figure out just WHY all this weird shit keeps happening to them; "Captain, you encounter temporal anomalies at over TEN TIMES the standard fleet average and you get in to situations we don't even have a name for. Just what the hell is an 'inverse causality loop'??"
@@artemis5168 It's a cool idea, because there's only two options - either the Enterprise encounters way too much weird stuff; or every other ship is like this too, and space in general is horrifying.
@@FTZPLTC Yeah, in the book the main reason the Enterprise keeps encountering so much weird stuff is because Trelane, Squire of Gothos (ret), became fascinated by the original Enterprise after his encounter with Kirk, and because of that developed a morbid fascination with the subsequent ones and basically kept playing with any ship named "Enterprise". Not a great explanation, but it's something. lol
What always surprised me most about this show by the time I'd watched the final episode is that the ship didn't have an entire dedicated insane asylum wing. What those poor bastards have seen and experienced is leagues beyond what even the most hardened spacefarers could ever be reasonably expected to endure. In one episode, most of the crew had their evolution forcefully and rapidly reversed, Riker once had to experience every single negative memory he'd ever had in the form of dreams to fight off a parasitic infection. Hell, in the first episode Picard had to try and craft a compelling argument with no preparation to convince Q to not straight up kill all humans everywhere, instantly.
The reason Starfleet personnel seem so well-adjusted is because the Federation has perfected mind-control and routinely erase traumatic memories of events suffered by crew members. In the TOS episode "Dagger of the Mind" Kirk goes to a Federation insane asylum. There's a device there that rewrites the brain's neurochemistry synapse by synapse. It's also been accepted as a standard medical practice for long enough that nobody questions it. That could be part of the reason why so many crew members keep such detailed and up-to-date personal logs. That way they have a record of everything they can't remember but don't have to carry the horror with them.
@@Grizabeebles Explains why everyone doesn't seem to have any sense of individuality and likes all the same shit like the strange obsession with classical music and instruments. They're rewritten to.

Reminds me a lot of boyinaband actually edit: Wow this comment aged poorly. To be clear: I am referring to the passing facial resemblance and similar comedic styles
This is actually the second video I've seen discussing the lunacy of this episode. As I've stated in the comments on that video there was a kooky reason why this episode went off the rails. The Anne Rice Vampire Chronicles and Mayfair witch books suddenly spiked in popularity at that time. This was a clear attempt at shoe horning that popularity into Trek...with disastrous results.
I just lost mine as well, it honestly hurts worse than when my dad died, we can only hope Wally and Sid are together somewhere. But star trek was always my comfort show as a kid, so this seems fortuitous in its own way.
I'm sad to hear that Sid is no longer with us, as you had him in quite a lot of videos, and they seemed like a well-trained, chill cat, and he brought a lot of joy to me and your audience...My heart goes out to you and your wife, farewell Sid.
I feel sorry for the Ghost Alien Thing in Sub Rosa. He clearly loved that bloodline, he didn't actually HARM anyone, in fact, apparently the Grandma lived LONGER than expected, but because Pickard couldn't stand the idea of his sidepiece leaving his crib, they had to nuke him.
Clearly the writers didn't understand that they were writing what is essentially a story about an alien raping the female members of her family for centuries and feeding off them without their consent so there's no wonder that it's a confusing mess.
@@Dunybrook You're right. The problem is that the alien was depicted as genuinely caring, the women seemed to have had a very long life in the process and enjoyed it. There didn't seem to have any downside to his presence.
Lol. When you read the scripts, they say things like "You can see all the pain of those memories on her face." or "he exists stage left leaving Picard wondering what to do and the weight of these revelations and everything they imply all come crashing down upon him at once." then there's a closeup of Picard making the same concerned face he always makes. It's funny you mention. That's really how the scripts describe it.
And don't worry, thanks to BBC America's syndication contract with Paramount, TNG isn't going anywhere in the near future, and you'll be able to relive all your nightmares for years to come!
Back in college I saw an interview with the producer of one of TNG's later seasons and they said they whole time they were shooting one episode, finishing up the script for the next, and brainstorming for ideas for the one after that. That pace really, really showed. Used to watch with a friend of mine and poke fun at it Mystery Science Theater 3000 style.
I think its why TNG so memorable. Campy, bad and or good episodes came out of that process but the writers didn't forget it wasn't about the science but about the characters. You got to plan way to far in the future with a strong built world to get away with something like Babylon 5 did or just say fuck it, and do the direction Voyager even though they did no world building to even give it a chance to be successful.
Hmhm, fascinating indeed. I find it masterful how deep space 9 was able to merge this with a longer story and still have excellent character focus. Tng really paved the way for (in my opinion) the best series.
Man, what? I'm seeing the comments and I just can't believe it. Sid's passed? Oh man. I lost my oldest cat this year, she was my biggest company for almost 17 years (and I'm 26, so she's been by my side since I was 9). Sid was my favorite cat actor, only being (unfairly) tied to Salem (cause he was a puppet). I hope you and your wife are okay. Sid will always be remembered and loved, both by you and all of us. Here's to our favorite Khajiit. ❤️
Excuse me, Voyager not only gave us 7-of-9, the character responsible for my awakening into adulthood from a child (😉) but it also gave us the unflappable duo of Tom and Kim, my favourite duo in all of Trek! (Oh and "The Doctor" of course (not that one))
I'm a semi-hardcore Trekkie, and this was amazing. I mean, you can love something and still admit when it has issues, right? I can't wait to hear/see your take on Voyager. The series is great, don't get me wrong, but it is kind of a mess in places. Ok, it's kind of a mess in a lot of places, but in between those it's brilliant!
As Monty python one said: „If you take something which you really love and you watch it from all sides, make jokes about it, found out all its weaknesses - and still love it after that, then the love is real.”
I feel like Star Trek is often a victim of people taking it a bit too seriously. It's held hostage by it's own humongous amount of established canon, and a fanbase that holds every single minute detail under a microscope. I think it's lot easier to enjoy when you realise it's basically a soap opera, that just happens to be set in space, allowing it to play with our ideas of what could be possible in the future. It's at its best when it is free to dabble in the whimsical and the barely plausible. It doesn't really need to be realistic to work, it just needs to be thought provoking.
Your observations apply to the ST franchise as a whole. TOS had more cringe than many remember. We cut it slack because it was a trailblazer, and the chemistry of three main characters.
My life has descended into utter chaos since the last time you uploaded, but watching you somehow grab chaos by the balls and make it do work for you fills me with hope.

I love Star Trek, I'd be down for more of these. The Voyager episode where they go to warp 10 in a shuttlecraft and then turn into salamanders is my favorite bad Star Trek episode.
Wasn't the subtext of the whole thing that the ghost was actually a alien which parasited her granma and now was trying to do the same to her? And the whole weird reactions were her getting basically drugged with alien-ghost-sex powers
Omg, yes! I can't wait for the voyager video! I have a feeling I know exactly which episode it will be; everyone (characters and viewers) pretty much pretend like it never even happened. It is insane.
I was like 'Voyager the worst??' but that said I think it's just because Janeway is my favourite 😅 it does have the unequivocably worst episode of all Trek, so I presume Threshold is what's coming next...!
When he said "Computer, tea, earl grey, hot", my Alexa (which I have set to respond to "Computer") said that the replicators were offline. I said it a few more times and it gave similar answers. Must be an easter egg progrmmed into it. 😂
There's so many parts of Voyager that I hope you tackle. I rewatched the whole series a few years ago and it was a delightful treat but it certainly has some questionable episodes, and, as has been covered on other channels, their limited resources aren't so limited, like the sheer number of photon torpedoes they use when supposedly they couldn't make any more, at least until seven of nine comes aboard.
I have been thinking about this episode and how insane it is for years! Thank you, thank you for dedicating your time to this. At least I know I'm not the only one who watched it and said "What the hell?" I got tears of laughter from this. I love it.
2:25 as a space nerd I have to remind you that he actually flew on a hydrogen powered rocket, which releases basically zero carbon into the atmosphere.
As an energy nerd, I have to point out that it takes more energy to liquify hydrogen than you get back by burning it. All that hydrogen that you burn to almost get some tourists to space actually STARTED as water, and it took quite a bit of energy to convert that water into liquid hydrogen. Its fantastic that the burning of liquid hydrogen doesn't itself create more CO2 considering that it already has a sizable carbon footprint just by existing. All this zero carbon nonsense is just marketing until the last carbon producing power plant is turned off and all the industrial processes used to produce and maintain our power generating equipment is **actually** net-zero carbon. Until then? Using electricity? Well you aren't zero emissions then, are you?
Can I just say that people in the Star Trek universe have lived A LOT longer than 100. Dr. McCoy's canonical age in TNG was like 173, so I gotta give this episode one bit of credit
MCCoy was a special case. The mind meld he shared with Spock in Star Trek 3 somehow had the effect of lengthening his life span. I do not know all of the details but that is what I heard.
My condolences about Sid. Great to see you back. Again your video managed to make me laugh out loud several times. A much needed fun in the rainy weather. Cheers Mate
Star Trek is one of my favorite series of all time because you'll go from some of the best writing in television history to just some unhinged shit in like 2 episodes. DS9 was the only one that actually had a pretty consistent level of quality and even then there were a lot of batshit insane episodes.
@@JulianLopez-nd9ts The first 2 seasons of DS9 are still way more consistent than TNG and VOY. Like I think that there's only 1 truly bad episode in season 1 of DS9. Compare that to season 1 of TNG and there's no contest.
@@Drybread Personally, I’m of the opposite opinion where I honestly think S1 of DS9 is worse than TNG and VOY. TNG’s season 1 I kinda like because it gets solidly into “so bad it’s good” territory. For VOY, it’s the show I grew up with so I have a soft spot for it. That being said, I can definitely understand your viewpoint on this and ultimately it’s all personal opinion. I’m also a bit biased against DS9 because of how it stole a bunch of stuff from Babylon 5 (which I also think did that stuff better and was a better show overall).
Voyager has great episodes, hands down some of the best, but in general, the crew is so generic. The Doctor is awesome and 7 of 9 has turned out well, but the rest, imo, is not very interesting. Harry Kim? Yawn. I do like Janeway, but her character depth at times seems limited to: "I like black coffee." OK, harsh, she has a tough job out there, but with only a few exceptions, her moral compass is bent less than Sisko's. (Actually, belay that, she does cross the line quite a few times) Picard was once my hands down fave Captain, but Sisko has won me over. DS9 is, again, my opinion, the best of the entire franchise. TNG has some great characters, the bridge crew is extremely likable and epic, but I think DS9 has the best crew, villains (Dukat, Weyoun, Kai Winn) and "frenemies" (Quark, Garak). I enjoyed Disco but have some reservations, I liked Picard and don't know why it was so hated. SNW has been fun. Pike has some of Sisko's whimsy. Jury is out. Lower Decks is the best Trek in production at the moment. Trek needs to be taken down a peg. It's funny and the stories can be good. Plus, it's TNG-era, which I prefer to the current crop. Mostly in look. TOS, of course, a world apart. Hard to compare cuz the effects are limited and the stories very 60's "sociology sci-fi" in a way. Love it. But honestly, despite growing up on TOS, the TNG-era is my preference. Still, TOS is maybe the most "magical" in taking me to weird head-spaces. Enterprise gets lost in the shuffle. It's got good stories and characters, but the whole Xindi thing, which entered canon outta nowhere, irked me. Lots of lost opportunities with Enterprise. The finale was a ripoff for that cast and us viewers. But yea, Bakula as Archer, Trip, Malcolm, T'Pol, Phlox, Hoshi, the Boomer dude, all decent characters. Good overall, but missing....something. Haha. I didn't really respond directly, but i've been mulling this a lot recently. I think DS9 deserves at least 10 episodes to see where Sisko ended up. Or not. It was such a great iteration of Trek. I'd like to see more of DS9 than any other series. It did end well, but there's still a big "?" over Sisko's fate. I've not seen a Trek series I don't like. They are all good, and a bad episode of Trek beats most other TV any day of the week. Even some of those awful se01 eps of TNG. Opinions only. I'm sure others have theirs and equally valid reasons for why they prefer what they do. All is good with Trek.
I'm sorry to hear about Sid's passing. I'm a cat father (of two) myself and my Perseus is beginning to show his age. Losing a beloved companion is always difficult, but I know you'll always remember the happy times that you both spent together. Please cover the episode of enterprise where the crew has to shut down all main systems when entering a nebula and hide in the engine toobes from the radiation, only for an alien combat team to board their ship and restart it despite still being in the nebula which will fry any active system
I don't get the Voyager hate, it's absolutely my favorite Star Trek. It has some of the most interesting episodes and really tackles the philosophy of the Federation in unique situations. Plus while not every character amazing, some of the best star trek characters are from that series. Anyway, enough soapboxing. Fantastic video, can't wait for the next one!
I love Voyager too! it was the first Trek I ever watched in full, and it holds a special place in my heart. The only other Trek I've watched in full is DS9, which is amazing and I love it as well :)
Man I just had to comment that the joke you did where you ascended after hearing “ I did fall asleep reading a particularly erotic chapter in my grandmother’s dairy last night” was absolutely hilarious lol great job man
I can see people not liking DS9 at the start, but I appreciate the slow burn start which gives much more room for introducing the characters. TNG characters felt like archetypes, never really leaving their little boxes. If they did, by the end of the episode they'd be right back where they started.
You know, the sex candle episode is not the worst episode. I actually quite like it. It's great. You have an incredibly accomplished woman with a prestigious position in Star Fleet who is willing to toss it all way for ghost nookie. That must be some damn good ectoplasm. Like... where can I buy one of those candles? BB&B? This was some Star Trek fan fiction write large, but it was a great diversion. Obviously the Scottish accent is awful. The episode where Geordi turned into an invisible alien or the one where Barclay mutated into a giant spider are definitely worse. Or maybe the one where Barclay saw the creatures From Beyond in the transporter beam. Or the one where Geordi meets the real life version of the woman he's been macking on in the holodeck. Or Emancipation. Sorry, that last one was Stargate. The same person who wrote Emancipation, wrote Code of Honor for Star Trek The Next Generation, so it counts by proxy.
Basically every episode that attempts to handle relationships or the real life implications of the holodeck? I am not disagreeing with you just god that was a bad episode of stargate.
i think the worst one is the season 2 closer. its just a clip episode, with no budget, that drops any sense of a plot halfway through and its all bad memories too. mall hurtful... they pretty much spend the whole episode saying, but what if we stimulate more memories!? and the Polaski is basically like, im not sure we should, but i'll give it a try... and that's it... that's all it is... Polaski deserved a MUCH better send off.
I recently read a post about Code of Honor and Emancipation. Not only did the writer recycle the plot, the episodes even have the same number (season 1 episode 4) in both shows. Having written the worst episode of both TNG and SG-1 is an achievment of sorts I guess.
Oddly, without the context of the fanbase, this episode is bizarre. But, it made sense in the context of, "What is popular these days?" "Anne Rice occultism novels." "STAR TREK GHOST STORY!" And thus was this episode made.
Despite the fact I'm only 27, I have fond memories of watching the original series with my dad. it DID push some boundaries at the time as well. Love it to bits! The next generation is awesome as well.

Through this comment section I learned of Sid's passing. He will be missed, forever immortalized as the possibly malicious cat of UpIsNotJump.
Prrrr-adise surely
The Expanse is such a great show, and for the most part very scientifically accurate too! I've heard the books were also pretty amazing too
I'm sad to hear that Sid is no longer with us, as you had him in quite a lot of videos, and they seemed like a well-trained, chill cat, and he brought a lot of joy to me and your audience...My heart goes out to you and your wife, farewell Sid.
He killed the Irish man.
@@romulino In self-defense, if I remember correctly.
Picard couldn't stand the fact that Beverly got absolutely railed by someone other than him
This episode of TNG falls into the "so bad it's actually good" category. It's so bizarre and cheesy I can't help but love it.
No. No it doesn't. I know some people enjoy it for... some reason. But this is basically... Star Trek: Twilight.
Bizarre you say
@@rcslyman8929 atleast you can understand what the characters are saying without subtitles
Trashy Romance Novel IN SPAAAACE!
Tng really paved the way for (in my opinion) the best series.
you know when the content creator is phenomenally entertaining that he puts the sponsor at the end and you end up watching it in its entirety.
And then not buying it, partly because it’s for a laptop that starts at over £3,000!
You misspelled Nelix.
Perfect attitude to have. You can love something, but still be critical of it.
@@The_gaming_archaeologist TNG had full of plot holes XD

The line of Troi being jealous is wild considering her "encounter" with a ghost/ energy spirit thing and how well that episode went
Was that the one where she got pregnant?
@@JulianLopez-nd9ts I believe so, unless there was another episode in which a similar thing happened
I legit forgot these were different episodes. That makes so much more sense.
Wasn't the subtext of the whole thing that the ghost was actually a alien which parasited her granma and now was trying to do the same to her? And the whole weird reactions were her getting basically drugged with alien-ghost-sex powers
You could have chosen ANY OTHER episode and I could have watched it. But this episode is beyond my ability to digest in any form.
Omg, yes! I can't wait for the voyager video! I have a feeling I know exactly which episode it will be; everyone (characters and viewers) pretty much pretend like it never even happened. It is insane.

I got into Star Trek through TNG, but DS9 is what settled me into the fandom.
I absolutely loved DS9. It's peak trek for me
DS9 is the best
Any chance to bash carbon and technological progress
I suggest you should get up do date. Rockets do produce CO2, and also the emmission of hydrogene is not completely unproblematic.
@@dmbook yeah i mean, why blame CO2 emissions of they are only destroying our world climate?

Rip sid, my coin will miss his wares
Can I just say that people in the Star Trek universe have lived A LOT longer than 100. Dr. McCoy's canonical age in TNG was like 173, so I gotta give this episode one bit of credit
that just means her grandma died young
McCoy lived so long because his molecules weren't getting jumbled every 2-3 days.
He was 137, not 173.
MCCoy was a special case. The mind meld he shared with Spock in Star Trek 3 somehow had the effect of lengthening his life span. I do not know all of the details but that is what I heard.
Time flies faster in their fictional universe Deforest Kelly is not that old.
My condolences about Sid. Great to see you back. Again your video managed to make me laugh out loud several times. A much needed fun in the rainy weather. Cheers Mate
This legit has me rolling on the floor laughing. My dog thought I was insane
Star Trek is one of my favorite series of all time because you'll go from some of the best writing in television history to just some unhinged shit in like 2 episodes. DS9 was the only one that actually had a pretty consistent level of quality and even then there were a lot of batshit insane episodes.
The first two seasons of DS9 would beg to differ.
As someone who just lost their cat, my condolences. May Khajiit-known-as-Sid rest in peace.

Well, actually, in Star Trek, humans actually manage to live up to 100 years, with Dr. McCoy managing to reach 120 in the TNG pilot
Dude the evolution episode was great! You had murder caveman worf and troi eating caviar. I also liked the Barkley transporter beam one.
i think the worst one is the season 2 closer. its just a clip episode, with no budget, that drops any sense of a plot halfway through and its all bad memories too. mall hurtful... they pretty much spend the whole episode saying, but what if we stimulate more memories!? and the Polaski is basically like, im not sure we should, but i'll give it a try... and that's it... that's all it is...
Masks was pretty bad.
Oddly, without the context of the fanbase, this episode is bizarre. But, it made sense in the context of, "What is popular these days?" "Anne Rice occultism novels." "STAR TREK GHOST STORY!"
And thus was this episode made.
Despite the fact I'm only 27, I have fond memories of watching the original series with my dad. it DID push some boundaries at the time as well. Love it to bits! The next generation is awesome as well.
