- Oh so your back again to see the final video part of the 'cheap' Lambretta TS1 engine build. Fair enough! Right where to start.... so if you have watched the other 7 episodes of the build you will know that I have tried to show each stage of the engine build with a little bit of humour and some more serious build parts. Overall I am happy with the way the engine has turned out although it has had its challenges along the way.
The silent blocks... my mistake for not checking them so now I have to fit some more.
The rear hub bearing is very odd, bought in good faith from eBay, they arrived in what looks like 'Genuine' packaging but the rear hub oil seal would not go in no matter what I tried. So I phoned SKF to check the bearings were real and to my surprise I was told that the part number I was quoting had been discontinued a few years ago! That set the alarm bells ringing, so I looked a little closer and found that the packaging was printed 'made in India; but the bearings were printed ' made in Germany'.... that begs the question "are these fake/copy bearing?" I don't think we will ever know.
Next on the list was the 'cheap' eBay kickstart shaft.... OMG! Never again! Where I measured it, it was 3 or 4 mm longer that an original SIL one, but more importantly the shaft was not machined square so it would not sit flat against the side case.
On a plus not tho, the re-plated barrel went on brilliantly and the rest of the engine went together well. As I explain in the video it would normally take me around 10-12 hours to strip and build a TS1, but with all the messing about I think this took me around 20 hours.
Costs wise I have broken it down in the video into sections of the build and then into the amount of hours it took to give me a total cost.

This is why I like to buy parts for a new engine a little at a time, when I can afford to, until I finally have got everything needed. Then I can pretend I didn't spend much, lol. This was a very good mini series that I'll be watching again.

Really enyoyed this series. Bearing in mind you're looking at another £250 for carb and manifold, then maybe £400+ for exhaust it starts to make pre-built engines look (relatively) good value.
Can't wait to see it on the dyno. What you predicting- 24hp?

Just fitted MB big engine mounts , cones , bar stainless steel. Had small ones in for 20 years..lol

@@Shedtune_Russ should have changed them years ago. I now have a nice MB engine mount tool i can now look at for the next 20 years. :)

Well done Russ, more like 6 hours twatting about lol maybe the bloke with the bus pass could have helped??? Brand TS1 engine Andy francis £3900 but no exhaust carb or rear hub and no twatting about!!! (You have nice hands xx) it's not cheap now days

Another good video RS, gives people that think owning, running and maintaining a Lambretta is cheap a reality check, especially when you consider how much the total could have been if everything was new😉

Glad you highlighted the issue with oil seal and bearing not matching up, I've got a leaky oil seal on my rear hub bearing, wonder that's going to end

Or alternatively to keep costs down, if you’ve got a small casing scoot, utilise that casing with a new kit of choice to prob give similar performance for less bucks.

Yeah probably save about 400 quidish depending on what kit if you’ve already got the casing
I am still very new to this so forgive the daft question: but what have you bought with that £2500-ish engine? Something that can win traffic light grand prix's? A comfortable trip from here near to Crewe to Llangollen say without you wrist wringing it self off? Will we see the engine in a scoot?
Um. I didn't think the price was too outlandish. We have all done the 'cheap off E-bay' trick at one time and lived to cry into our Ribena.

Kinda pisses me off that people don't understand the time and money that goes into building engines, and the fact that cheap shite can take hours to fix to make usable. Lots want it done cheap at the builder's time and expense! They also don't understand that tools cost money! I only build my own engines now as it isn't worth the hassle! I do however help mates diagnose problems and help them fix any😉
