Mickey Mania Longplay (Mega Drive/Genesis) [60 FPS]: Revisit some of Mickey's greatest cartoons in this glossy, if somewhat under-cooked platforming experience! Read the video description for my review!
What an absolute gorgeous game in every way! The way so many effects were pulled off. An insanely good use of the limited color pallet... The number of animation frames. Even the layout of the levels. I'm not a Disney fan but great job to all involved!
(13:45) My favorite music piece from this game. The good old days of playing this on the classic 16-Bit Sega Genesis aside from just Sonic. Mickey games were out of this world for me growing up. Never realized the hidden areas and stage back then.
What a great video! I remember I used to play this game in 1994 on my mega drive and I enjoyed it so much I still remember I was amazed by it. Later I was playing the PlayStation One version but somehow I didn't feel that game but now I'm watching this video and truly reExperiencing the magic of this game!
Glad you enjoyed it! If you take a look through my channel you'll also find the PS1, Mega CD and SNES versions - undoubtedly one of the most highly anticipated Disney licenses back in the day :)
A technical marvel and one of the absolute best-looking and sounding games of its era! And the Mega Drive or Mega-CD versions are sooo much better than the SNES one, as often with multiplatform games :) btw, taking a quick glance at the description, but I wouldn't use Donkey Kong Country as reference to great gameplay... Super Mario World though, NOW yes! (or Sonic the Hedgehog, Kid Chameleon, Ristar and many others although Mickey Mania is still pretty good in that regard)
They also did a conversion of this for the PS1 (renamed Mickey's Wild Adventure) - pretty much the same game with better colours, and the chase scenes are in true 3D
Only Sega fanboys are capable to say this game is superior than Donkey Kong Country. But, who cares? It's envy. About this game, great! It's the main thing genesis was capable, but it's better to watch in mute, cause the sound effects that are too crappy, as usual in genesis.
@@agapitojuliano5517 your comment is a fail in every ways :D I have better things to do but still, just for fun: 1° who said that "this game is superior than Donkey Kong Country"? 2° and even if someone said that, it wouldn't be more nor less wrong than saying that DKC is better than this game. the SNES DKC games have great atmosphere but aren't particularly great games 3° envy? mouahahaha. I had both DKC 1 and 2 back then. as I said great atmosphere but not much else to say and I'd much rather play super mario world, ristar or any sonic games 4° the main thing genesis was capable? the genesis AKA mega drive can do many things that the SNES cannot despite being released 2 years before and being less expensive :D 5° as usual? there are PLENTY of mega drive games with great sound effects. you are just deaf or too salty to acknowledge it
Great video. This game has some of the best 2D animation I've seen in any game. And well played. You made it look easy. But you always seem to do that! :) How much practicing do you typically have to do, before recording your videos and how many "takes" do you go through? What hardware / sofware did you play this on? What did you ouput to? How did you record it?
Glad you enjoyed the video! Hope the following answers your queries: Practice: I don't tend to practice, but if I mess up/miss too much content then I will start over. I generally read guides for information on hidden areas/secrets/strategies if the game features them. Takes: depends on the game and how happy I am with the captured footage - if I don't think it's entertaining/complete enough then I'll re-record sections until I'm happy with it. Software/Recording: BizHawk emulator with built in pixel-perfect AVI recording for capture (Lagarith lossless video codec). I then upscale the footage to roughly 720p using H.264 with a CRF of 10 before uploading to UA-cam.
Interesting. I've been playing with emultors for years, but I'd never heard of BizHawk. So I gave it a try. It's quite impressive. I generally go for filters that give a more "authentic CRT" look when actually playing on emulators. But for recording and playback on a variety of unknown devices, at various resoutions, I suppose it's safer to stick with the cleanest look possible. BizHawk certainly seems to do that. Looks like this one will take quite some time to fully explore... Thanks. :)
+Richard Linder If you're looking to create videos and longplays then Bizhawk is the tool of choice. If playing for fun then retroArch/Libretro is a great way to relive the old days, especially with solid netplay support 😀
@@Richard.Linder The dude who programmed all the visual effects for this game started up a UA-cam channel called GameHut where he explains how he managed to make the Mega Drive do all this insane shit. ua-cam.com/channels/fVFSjHQ57zyxajhhRc7i0g.html
Yeah i look at the snes one as the worst version. It lacks alot of things like the scene where mickey rescues classic Mickey, the pseudo 3d section of the mad doctor ect. Also it has very long loading screens
Huh - I had never known about that bonus warp at 23:34! Seems it's based on the short "The Band Concert," which was the first Mickey short film in color. Makes me wonder if they had intended to make a full level based on it, and then, not wanting to scrap the stuff in that hurricane segment, kept it in as a secret.

Traveller's Tales could certainly push the Genesis. This is almost like watching a 16-bit Cuphead...
Damn this game still looks awesome!!!
I loved this game and the way Micky moved and looked was AMAZING at the time

god that moose gives me flashbacks
Same
I must say the 68000 was and still is impressive!!!!
Not just the 68000. The game pushed a ton of the hardware's components, especially the VDP.
Finished it these days. Great game back then, and still today! Iconic gem.
2004 i played this at my grandpa's house every weekend. that moose stage was a bitch and never passed it. but the nostalgia made it ok
This was the first game i ever played. I was 4 and had the sega Genesis

Who’s here after watching Steamboat Silly?
One of the few Megadrive games I could beat back in the day. No way could I do it on Hard Mode, though.
Pretty impressive looking game for a piece of hardware that was already over 6 years old.
It took me abour half an hour in that moose stage 😂 i wished i played well like you haha
The SNES sound is MUCH better
It may sound better, but it’s not a great version of the game compared to the Sega genesis.
Into the Mickey-Verse
@Angel DJ Gaming There was going to be a sequel to Mickey Mania but it cancelled in favor of a Toy Story game.

@@AL82RetrogamingLongplays I've heard that the PS1 version has some kind of issues, maybe it was about the hit boxes or something. Did you play it?
Yes - ua-cam.com/video/ZyDymHQa1ec/v-deo.html
I don't recall any issues with it - seemed pretty good 🙂
