Korea has its own obsession with whiteness as well. I’m not surprised by the Chinese ad. They even sell a toothpaste called Darlie (used to be called Darkie) which has a racist pic of a black man on the box. There are numerous racist ads & products in China. It seems East Asian countries promote white skin & racist stereotypes against SE Asians who tend to be darker, dark Latinos & blacks. So many dark skinned people (SE Asians, Blacks, Arabs, Latinos) complain about discrimination in Korea due to their skin color. Koreans say it’s because historically fair skin people were considered wealthy & dark skin was a sign of poverty. However, the k-dramas before 2014 have actors with their natural skin color. Nowadays, the actors are all pasty white with high bridge noses. I think it’s an effort to look more Caucasians than Asian. Unfortunately, we all have been sold this notion that white skin is superior. Some believe more than others, including some companies.

Skin color is determined by the amount of MELANIN that your body produces, the more melanin you produce the darker your skin tone. And melanin production depends on your DNA makeup. People with large amounts of Sub-Saharan African DNA produce more melanin which is why their skin is darker. Beyoncé is not fair skin because of her quality of life. She’s fair skin because her family is Creole from Louisiana. Creoles are a mix of African & European French. So she has African & European DNA. This same DNA was passed down to her kids & their father may have small amounts of European DNA as well due to the history of slavery in America. This is why her kids have lighter skin. There were American slaves with even lighter skin than Beyoncé & Asians. And it definitely wasn’t because of their quality of life. It’s because they had large amounts of European DNA. Skin color is based on GENETICS, not quality of life. And I never said anyone was watching k-dramas for people’s skin color. I said in older k-dramas, the actors skin color is darker because it’s closer to their natural skin color. Skin whitening in everyday products (soap, lotion, makeup) is common in Korea. I also recently saw that there is a pill some Koreans take in order to keep their body from producing melanin. I don’t know how prevalent this pill is, but was shocked to find out it even existed.

I still remember the ad for the Japanese tourist board, where the boss says that they have to "change the face of Japan". He means to change it from cold and impersonal to warm and friendly. the 1st comercial on the vending machine made me conflictuous i wanted to laught since i noticed the joke but it felt dammn wrong at the same time, i didnt like that some one on the how said the comercial was about " men smell" that's the misinterpretation problem on this comercial, but somehow i believe that was actually intentional to have this mix vibes from the comercial and not appropriate, that ending was to much.
I have traveled and lived in many countries and have met even more people from varying countries. I have yet to find a people or a country that has not had some degree of racism or strong cultural-ism. It's always easy to point it out in other countries but often we don't look inward. I think in every country you will always find people who are and people who are not racist. Whether that is due to ignorance, upbringing or just plain hate and close-mindedness, you will always find it because people don't like change or things that are different. As children we are taught to be cautious of things that are different or that we don't understand... the familiar is safe. Part of that is out of necessity for children, but kids absorb everything they see and hear but don't always have the ability to decipher that information into rational thought...causing fear and bias as the adults who help us decipher this info already have their preconceived notions which influence our future outlook on other humans and life. It's amazing we have lasted this long.

Don't start with the " all countries are racist " nonsense. Western countries ( Europe, USA, Australia, New Zealand and Canada) + Argentina are the worst, so racist. North Asian (Korea, Japan, China) are just behind. There's racism in many countries but the level of racism is not the same. There is a difference between racism and ignorant. Two terms are different but ignorant can root from the term racism. I’m still learning cause I would often mistake ignorant things as racism. Note: There was a lot of racist stuff in this video they reacted to just letting you know that ignorant and racism are two different terms.
I'll give you that there is a difference between a person being a full blown racist and being just a very ignorant person. However, I think when describing actions it doesn't matter if ignorance is involved or not. A racist action is a racist action regardless of whether it was done out of malice or not. For example, maybe a person says something terrible about asian people but they actually didn't know that it was a bad thing to say. That thing they said can be racist AND ignorant whereas one may make the argument that the person themselves was just very ignorant.

The sweat vending mashine one is accidentally racist if anything. There used to be this meme that they sell anything, even girls panties, in vending machines in Japan. There is a famous picture of one. The makers of this ad tried to make a joke on that but switched, so instead of pervy man buying used girls panties it's the other way around (the company sells equipment for gardening etc). But it came out looking like some kind of racial commentary to people who didn't know the meme of the panty vending machine. The volkswagen one wasn't racist. I guess they should hire a black hand model next time? Respelling makes a racist word? The phrase "The new ..." is used in tons of ads so idk

The soap ads were the advertiser's attempt to show just how strong the soap is at making something dark (like a stain) turn white. I absolutely can see the concern about racism with them, though, and the advertisers should be a hell of alot more thoughtful about that (that's pretty obvious!). The one about the asain smelling the underwear I didn't get at all, until you explained it to me, and I still don't know how that was being used. Stupid! And, the one about the guy being moved in to buy the car, I was trying to figure out how that could be racist. You had to point that out that it was a white hand directing a black man. Saying that one is racist is stretching it quite a bit.

I didn't and still don't find that dove ad racists, they changed inti different races to promote the dove was a brand for every skin tone. It was weird how people took one small clip and exaggerated it. Like you had a problem with the order? But the white girl changed into an Indian girl with a darker skin tone so how was it racist??? I think at the end of the ad they were standing in order from the darker skin woman to the lighter. It paints the picture of skin being whitened after using the product.I don’t know if that’s what they’re trying to say but that’s how it looks and the big companies cannot afford to call it being ignorant or a mistake. What makes it racist is that it’s a bodywash ad promoting that if your use their product your skin will become dark to light. Basically implying darker skin is dirty and lighter skin is clean.

And just like what the young lady said on the right, that these companies get alot of backlash and give empty apologies only because of them trying to save their image and not because they feel they were wrong and really felt sorry. Seems the Oriental lady chooses to emulate the Polish guy's complexion through her skin care products, rather than embrace her natural skin colour. Hypocrisy?
My understanding is that historically in Korea, as well as in much of East Asia, you were considered more attractive if you had lighter skin, even prior to any substantial contact with the West. It is hypothesized affluence was associated with lighter skin because those who could afford to be inside all day and out of the fields wouldn't tan as much. This preference has carried through to today, so it is not that she is trying to emulate people of European ancestry. I do not know how much this average preference carries over into views of people of different ethnic backgrounds. I suspect it is particularly frustrating for people from Southern parts of Asia with darker skin tones, such as Thailand and Laos, given that there is a relatively strong similarity in features between them and Koreans. On the other hand, people of African ancestry look so different that I suspect their aesthetic attractiveness is evaluated on an entirely different set of criteria.

Someone who will laugh alongside their racist remarks so they can use that person as an excuse for their next racist remark but now they feel comfortable enough where it’s not even told as a “joke”. You may find it funny but 1) that’s you and you don’t speak for everyone of your race or another person’s race and 2) just because it’s labeled as a joke it doesn’t take away that a “joke” is racist or has racist elements to it.

Okay, this show was done to air the problems of racism in marketing and advertisements, did you send a copy to those companies and saying this is what your racist ads have accomplished. No. So what's the point? If pointing out racism to a person isn't questioned then why do it in the first place? It doesn't help make the situation better
Plenty of people have called out numerous of racist ads. Some countries are more well known to engage in creating racist ads, downplay the racism or ignore it. You still should call out racist behavior or racism especially in your daily life. To be like “oh but you didn’t tell the companies so we shouldn’t acknowledge it” is lazy and doesn’t hold the racist behaviors accountable. If you can’t tell someone they’re in the wrong to their face then you just flop on the ground and shrug? If someone was treating you poorly because of your race and gender but because you didn’t tell them personally you are just going to accept it? You’re not going to complain about it to anyone? No one at all? I highly doubt that.

The white person really needs some waking up. The Asian girl said things about seeing online, not what she's experienced. And I can tell you online as a white woman I have experienced plenty of racism. And as a slavic white woman(the man here is also slavic) I have experienced even more not only on racial grounds but on ethnic too. So I'd really appreciate someone with actual knowledge of current trends to speak, not someone conditioned into guiltless for their race. When this white POLISH person has been from a historically enslaved and discriminated ethnos. Till 30 years ago this whole half of Europe was NOT considered white and were treated as less than every western European-born non-european person. Till this day is like this.
I think when white people were enslaved it was as punishment, like a prison sentence that had to be carried out. The difference in slavery for blk people, especially in the west was that it was chattel slavery. Meaning if you’re born blk, you’re automatically considered as property to whites, and not a human. And even then in the american constitution we still have an amendment that still states that us blk americans only count as 3/5 of a person. Meaning that 2/5 of our very being is still considered as property in the states. So we (blk people) are not even considered fully human in the states. Whereas, your people internationally are the standard because of your skin tone.

That concept is very colonial and mostly used in that context anyways since it differenciates between the whites (europeans) and all the assorted "browns". We call each other european. Korea has its own obsession with whiteness as well. I’m not surprised by the Chinese ad. They even sell a toothpaste called Darlie (used to be called Darkie) which has a racist pic of a black man on the box. There are numerous racist ads & products in China. It seems East Asian countries promote white skin & racist stereotypes against SE Asians who tend to be darker, dark Latinos & blacks. So many dark skinned people (SE Asians, Blacks, Arabs, Latinos) complain about discrimination in Korea due to their skin color.
Koreans say it’s because historically fair skin people were considered wealthy & dark skin was a sign of poverty. However, the k-dramas before 2014 have actors with their natural skin color. Nowadays, the actors are all pasty white with high bridge noses. I think it’s an effort to look more Caucasians than Asian. Unfortunately, we all have been sold this notion that white skin is superior. Some believe more than others, including some companies.

Skin color is determined by the amount of MELANIN that your body produces, the more melanin you produce the darker your skin tone. And melanin production depends on your DNA makeup. People with large amounts of Sub-Saharan African DNA produce more melanin which is why their skin is darker.
Beyoncé is not fair skin because of her quality of life. She’s fair skin because her family is Creole from Louisiana. Creoles are a mix of African & European French. So she has African & European DNA. This same DNA was passed down to her kids & their father may have small amounts of European DNA as well due to the history of slavery in America. This is why her kids have lighter skin. There were American slaves with even lighter skin than Beyoncé & Asians. And it definitely wasn’t because of their quality of life. It’s because they had large amounts of European DNA. Skin color is based on GENETICS, not quality of life.
And I never said anyone was watching k-dramas for people’s skin color. I said in older k-dramas, the actors skin color is darker because it’s closer to their natural skin color. Skin whitening in everyday products (soap, lotion, makeup) is common in Korea. I also recently saw that there is a pill some Koreans take in order to keep their body from producing melanin. I don’t know how prevalent this pill is, but was shocked to find out it even existed.

I have traveled and lived in many countries and have met even more people from varying countries. I have yet to find a people or a country that has not had some degree of racism or strong cultural-ism. It's always easy to point it out in other countries but often we don't look inward. I think in every country you will always find people who are and people who are not racist. Whether that is due to ignorance, upbringing or just plain hate and close-mindedness, you will always find it because people don't like change or things that are different. As children we are taught to be cautious of things that are different or that we don't understand... the familiar is safe. Part of that is out of necessity for children, but kids absorb everything they see and hear but don't always have the ability to decipher that information into rational thought...causing fear and bias as the adults who help us decipher this info already have their preconceived notions which influence our future outlook on other humans and life. It's amazing we have lasted this long.

Don't start with the " all countries are racist " nonsense. Western countries ( Europe, USA, Australia, New Zealand and Canada) + Argentina are the worst, so racist. North Asian (Korea, Japan, China) are just behind. There's racism in many countries but the level of racism is not the same. There is a difference between racism and ignorant. Two terms are different but ignorant can root from the term racism. I’m still learning cause I would often mistake ignorant things as racism. Note: There was a lot of racist stuff in this video they reacted to just letting you know that ignorant and racism are two different terms.

One thing to note is that most racism is brought out of ignorance.
I'll give you that there is a difference between a person being a full blown racist and being just a very ignorant person. However, I think when describing actions it doesn't matter if ignorance is involved or not. A racist action is a racist action regardless of whether it was done out of malice or not.
For example, maybe a person says something terrible about asian people but they actually didn't know that it was a bad thing to say. That thing they said can be racist AND ignorant whereas one may make the argument that the person themselves was just very ignorant.

The sweat vending mashine one is accidentally racist if anything.
There used to be this meme that they sell anything, even girls panties, in vending machines in Japan. There is a famous picture of one. The makers of this ad tried to make a joke on that but switched, so instead of pervy man buying used girls panties it's the other way around (the company sells equipment for gardening etc). But it came out looking like some kind of racial commentary to people who didn't know the meme of the panty vending machine.

The soap ads were the advertiser's attempt to show just how strong the soap is at making something dark (like a stain) turn white. I absolutely can see the concern about racism with them, though, and the advertisers should be a hell of alot more thoughtful about that (that's pretty obvious!). The one about the asain smelling the underwear I didn't get at all, until you explained it to me, and I still don't know how that was being used. Stupid! And, the one about the guy being moved in to buy the car, I was trying to figure out how that could be racist. You had to point that out that it was a white hand directing a black man. Saying that one is racist is stretching it quite a bit.

I didn't and still don't find that dove ad racists, they changed inti different races to promote the dove was a brand for every skin tone. It was weird how people took one small clip and exaggerated it. Like you had a problem with the order? But the white girl changed into an Indian girl with a darker skin tone so how was it racist???

I think at the end of the ad they were standing in order from the darker skin woman to the lighter. It paints the picture of skin being whitened after using the product.I don’t know if that’s what they’re trying to say but that’s how it looks and the big companies cannot afford to call it being ignorant or a mistake. That would the biggest lie.
What makes it racist is that it’s a bodywash ad promoting that if your use their product your skin will become dark to light. Basically implying darker skin is dirty and lighter skin is clean.

And just like what the young lady said on the right, that these companies get alot of backlash and give empty apologies only because of them trying to save their image and not because they feel they were wrong and really felt sorry. My understanding is that historically in Korea, as well as in much of East Asia, you were considered more attractive if you had lighter skin, even prior to any substantial contact with the West. It is hypothesized affluence was associated with lighter skin because those who could afford to be inside all day and out of the fields wouldn't tan as much. This preference has carried through to today, so it is not that she is trying to emulate people of European ancestry.
I do not know how much this average preference carries over into views of people of different ethnic backgrounds. I suspect it is particularly frustrating for people from Southern parts of Asia with darker skin tones, such as Thailand and Laos, given that there is a relatively strong similarity in features between them and Koreans. On the other hand, people of African ancestry look so different that I suspect their aesthetic attractiveness is evaluated on an entirely different set of criteria.

Okay, this show was done to air the problems of racism in marketing and advertisements, did you send a copy to those companies and saying this is what your racist ads have accomplished. Plenty of people have called out numerous of racist ads. Some countries are more well known to engage in creating racist ads, downplay the racism or ignore it. You still should call out racist behavior or racism especially in your daily life. To be like “oh but you didn’t tell the companies so we shouldn’t acknowledge it” is lazy and doesn’t hold the racist behaviors accountable. If you can’t tell someone they’re in the wrong to their face then you just flop on the ground and shrug? If someone was treating you poorly because of your race and gender but because you didn’t tell them personally you are just going to accept it? You’re not going to complain about it to anyone? No one at all? I highly doubt that.

And I can tell you online as a white woman I have experienced plenty of racism. And as a slavic white woman(the man here is also slavic) I have experienced even more not only on racial grounds but on ethnic too. When this white POLISH person has been from a historically enslaved and discriminated ethnos. I think when white people were enslaved it was as punishment, like a prison sentence that had to be carried out. The difference in slavery for blk people, especially in the west was that it was chattel slavery. Meaning if you’re born blk, you’re automatically considered as property to whites, and not a human. And even then in the american constitution we still have an amendment that still states that us blk americans only count as 3/5 of a person. Meaning that 2/5 of our very being is still considered as property in the states. So we (blk people) are not even considered fully human in the states. Whereas, your people internationally are the standard because of your skin tone.

Out of all those ads I personally found two to be offensive.. the german one literally says the german N word, which, yeah, couldn't be more obvious.
