You might have labeled it a fail, but, to me, the Lisbon tram was spectacular! Actually, both the bird and tram were successful in my eyes. In the tram, your many layers brought a lot of character and depth to the background. I think the black paper brings a depth to the painting that is more often not found in white paper. If you keep at it, no doubt you'll come up with masterpieces just like you do with white paper! Thanks for showing us your awesome experiments in black paper. This was a joy to watch!
Yes to the gouache tutorials! I adored the blackbird, even when I counted its feet because I thought there were three! Counted three as well, so I think it may be bed time for me 😉
I agree the feet were done in such a confusing way it definitely looks like 3 feet. Your eyes are not playing tricks with you, but I guess even accomplished artists make mistakes, I definitely would have changed it to make it look more correct.
Omg Im so happy I found your channel I can't wait to go back and watch your other videos I don't no about anyone else but I would love a more indepth video on gouache that bird was absolutely amazing!!! I may actually have to give it to myself
As always, Paul, your art is amazing even when you use different media. I always enjoy your tutorials and that's why Wednesday is my favourite day of the week 😀 Would be nice if you could do a couple of gouache tutorials, perhaps a spring meadow (even if it's freezing here in UK!!). Best wishes!
I watch you paint everyday. Your one of my favorite people on u-tube. I sometimes try to paint along with you. I have done my favorite works with your helpful tutorials. Thank you Paul your the greatest to me!😊
Wow, loved the gouache, please do more, especially on black paper. I inherited some gouache paints, and would love to put them to use. Thank you Paul and Margot for your inspiration x 12 years dry lol 😆
Thanks Paul for the tutorial! Not sure if I’m ready for the black paper yet. I’d love to see how these subjects would look on regular watercolor paper as a comparison. I would like to see you do some tutorials in gouache every now and then…
Paul, your paintings on black paper are absolutely beautiful. Not a fail, just different, as it should be since it’s a very different aspect. Just shows how wonderfully diverse watercolor can be. I bet you could do an absolutely magical Halloween painting . . .
Paul, this shows how really talented you are ‼️ I think you can paint on anything, with anything and it will turn out perfect. I used metalic watercolor on black watercolor paper for a Dia de los Muertos painting. It took lots of layers.
On the train painting, which is beautiful, I love it. Since I love different styles of watercolor (granulating, translucent, separating, opaque), I think it was great! Thanks for sharing. I learned a lot.
Looking forward to this!!! I love black paper and just started using it with metallic colors and this demonstration really helped. I love what you painted - the reflections in the night scene and the background and feathers on the bird were so beautiful 🤩 I think you can do so much with that paper and you gave me a lot of ideas. A night galaxy/milky way or Northern lights would be incredible. Would love to see you demo the brown paper too in that beautiful Japanese style you did. Anyways you're a great artist/teacher/entertainer! Thanks for sharing your talent and creativity it's very much appreciated 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
As a beginner, this was terrific because of your repeated techniques, brush strokes and shadings. The reverse paper demonstrated the frustrations, and fixes, that I am experiencing putting brush and water to paper. Glad I found your channel .
Thank you so much for this, Paul. I just received a beautiful set of Holbein gouache (the small tubes - 18 colour set) and have been dying to use them. I also love dramatic, dark backgrounds and have some black paper I would love to use more. These two are a perfect match, in seeing your blackbird. I would love to see more tutorials on both the gouache and the black paper. Thank you for ALL your inspiring tutorials. :)
I’m glad to see it’s not just me having an issue of getting my watercolors to show up on black paper. Even the interference colors which are supposed to show up really have to be put on thick. Not sure the frustration is worth it. Will give the bird a go as I just have very small sheets of Stonehenge Aqua Black paper. Maybe the black paper from an Arches block that I’ve been saving for years might work with gouache. Yes, would like to see a gouache tutorial! Thanks, Paul! Your joke about dry January was stellar! 😂
I loved both but! Like you say the trolley car was very much painting and repainting. The gouache covers nicely and it took you less time to accomplish a very beautiful bird! Thanks again Paul!
So inspiring! I have only just started with watercolour having never picked up a paint brush in my fifty years. I have enjoyed your tutorials so much. I started with the country cottage and then onto the black bird. Wow I enjoyed this so much! I am going to try the tram today. I can't wait to get started. Thank you Paul for your amazing teaching, you are helping me so much. I never thought that I would enjoy painting so much.
Each are wonderful studies! Loved it when you said 'ugly stage', I always think it's never going to improve when I reach that stage and amaze myself when things turn out better than I give myself credit for. My son tries to encourage me but like a lot of us, we doubt ourselves, even you did, with the Tram study, which I think came together beautifully after the ugly stage! Thankyou! XXX
Before you even finish painting the black bird on the black w/c paper with GOAUCHE I can see you will do brilliantly.....Most interesting tutorial, Mr Clark!
Thanks for yet another beautiful treat and inspirational lesson. I would like to see the streetcar again sometime on white paper in watercolor. I'll bet it knocks the Earl Grey right out of the park.
well, I ordered and received a cheap set of gouache paint tubes and a 5x7 inch pad of Stonehenge cold press black paper to give this experiment a go. Just watched your video and I think this black paper experiment will be fun, especially with gold paints, too! wish me luck!
Well done for sticking with the constantly disappearing paint on the tram - it was beautiful in the end 👍! The gouache for the blackbird was certainly bright and very effective - would love to see more. A floral or landscape could work well. Big thanks 🙏
That was fun to watch. Loved them both but was partial to the bird. I loved the colors in both pictures; you did an amazing job. I'll pass on the black paper; I have enough trouble with the white. Thanks, I always look forward to Wednesdays; it doesn't matter what you paint, I enjoy it.
Thank you for this. I've had a pad of black watercolor paper sitting in my drawer for a year now. I haven't tried my goache yet either. I feel inspired after watching your video!
I like the first picture more, than the second one. It has a special feel to it and the colours are amazing. The second one I love the Background but the birds feet look a little extraordinary to me. Thanks Paul for showing us this technique on black aquarell paper. I did not know that this even exists.
Thanks Paul great to watch I never knew watercolours could be used on blackpaper I usually use acrylics on black paper.its a wonderful painting thanks so much and I love the bird in gouache too.👍👍👍
Not a complete “fail”, the tram painting turned out beautifully. Plus you saved me from spending money on black watercolor paper….thank you! I had the same experience painting on canvas that was for watercolors. I used a lot of thick watercolor to get the color to show up and it did not blend. I may try using gouache on the canvas I have left over. Well done on the black bird painting; it looked more enjoyable. I enjoyed the painting your wife shared with us. Talent runs in your family. 😊
I am now seeing all kinds of inspirational ideas where black paper would work. I don’t think I would have tried it without ideas like your tutorial provides. Thank you! And yes to a gouache tutorial please!
That trolley painting turned out amazing, but convinced me that the gouache or acrylic would be to work the way to go! Absolutely love the black bird! Painting with gouache is such a challenge…. Many painters that I have watched use it opaquely but that would mean you have to use it right from the tube without much water…..A tutorial on your take on gouache would be great!
I love how the street turned out. Beautiful. I actually love the artist Vanessa Horabuena. She starts with black canvas and does large scale paintings using acrylic. She paints live a lot too. Very fun to watch her paint. I’m thinking the black paper with gouache would get a similar look. FYI I started watching this video on the way to take my bonus son to school. I know I shouldn’t drive and watch videos, but it’s nice to just hear your voice. So now I’m gonna rewind the whole thing so I can watch it for real. Lol. Thank you so much for testing out this technique and yes I’d love to see a full tutorial on gouache please. 🥰🙏🏻
Hi Paul I don't call this a fail, but I agree with you about it not being the watercolor transparency that I love so much. You did a beautiful job with this medium and these paintings turned out gorgeous. Thank you for sharing this adventure with us.
Love your tutorials. I love working on black canvas and/or paper. I've found with a lot of experiments that gel pens work quite nicely, especially for very thin lines and highlights.
I did write a long comment but UA-cam lost it, so I'll just say both finished products were fabulous but you're definitely right in that neither has the feel or look of a traditional watercolour!
Hi Paul I also use black paper at time but it doesn’t soak as much as the white. I make figures or shapes with white watercolour first and use the opaque or chalky colours later. I like to use watercolour for night scenes because it gives a lot of depth to the painting and I feel it stands out
OMGOSH‼️ Before seeing these two paintings, I couldn’t understand the need for black WC paper. (unless painting shimmering pansies and the like) But I am gobsmacked with the way you painted these pics! They are absolutely amazing and NOT A FAILURE in any way!! I hope you do a Gouache tutorial. I now want and AM going to buy black WC paper and gouache. A BIG THANKYOU ‼️ God bless🕊
It’s a grand experiment Paul and you did it justice. I agree with you that it has more a character of acrylics than watercolor. Delightful nevertheless!
The black paper is an excellent background to highlight your brushstrokes and value marks. I could see them clearly, in a fresh way. I have learned a lot from you this past year, Paul; I am most appreciative of your enthusiasm.
I think you did a lovely job on this yellow trolley on black. It may not be indicative of watercolor but it is really quite lovely. You did a wonderful job. I really love it. The road looks like wet pavement. I'd love to see a gouache tutorial. Thank you!!
blackbird looks fantastic the tram looks like it takes a lot of patience which you mastered very well under difficult circumstances really enjoyable tutorial much appreciated thanx👍
Someone has probably said what I’m going to say since I’m late to the party this week due to a nasty virus. However, what I’ve learn with black watercolor paper Paul is first, the tea, coffee, milk, cream paint consistency concepts go out the window. The consistency works best if the paint is like MUD. That’s likely why you mentioned acrylic paint, imho, since it’s mostly like mud even when a little water is added. Now, I’ve only used metallic watercolor paint on small black paper for cards and it works great since the metallics need to be very thick anyway, and I love the outcome. I think that both of these pieces are light years away from fails. I’m partial to the bird just because I mostly do nature scenes. Blessings and thanks to you and Margot for this tutorial!
I found this fascinating to watch. So different and to see the many layers to cover the black paper. I didn't even know Black WC paper existed. Nice Video Paul, thank you!
You made that trolley at night terrific. I really liked the black bird using gouache. Yes, please do a tutorial about gouache. Hope you're feeling better.
I didn't find any failures in the Lisbon tram 🤨 You manage to make everything so magical🪄 especially when you made the drops fall on the asphalt like rain... At that moment those splashes reached my heart straight! Because you really conveyed the idea of the rain coming down and the road being wet in my eyes! Accompanied by good music (which usually makes me nervous to hear tunes from other tutorials) but you also have good taste in choosing the audio. Thank you very much... because seeing you paint transports me to another world and makes me forget reality
This was a very informative demonstration. Never heard of black watercolour paper. You approached this without the nervousness I would have had! Brilliant result. I especially like the bird. Interesting that gouache works so well. A demonstration of this type of painting would be great. Love all your tutorials. I really benefit from viewing them.
Wow that was wonderful! very interesting, I did not even know about black paper! Learned a lot today, thank you Paul! And both came out absolutely beautiful! I love watching your tutorials, always something unique in there! Thank you and thank you again!
Good afternoon dear Paul 💋! I am very glad to see you in the studio, as always joyful and healthy, and thank you for your work in creating the video! I liked everything very much and I hope you will please us with your videos more than once! I like and bye...bye.. . dear Paul💋!!! 😊👋👏👏🖼️🎨🖐️😊
@@ArtbyPaulClark Dear Paul, thanks for replying to my comment, which I always look forward to every Wednesday. I watched your video and it was an interesting idea to paint on black paper with bright watercolor!!! I looked at many artist bloggers, but I did not find a single video with drawing on black paper. It intrigued me, and I have a notebook with black tinted paper somewhere and I don’t know what to do with it? Did you suggest the idea just in time and I will try to draw on it, but I’m afraid Nothing good will come of this! What do you think... For the first time I see you, how you laugh funnyly, you laugh and look at you with interest. Your face becomes completely different, it becomes playful and sly, but your hair has grown back! I found a video of how flowers are painted on a black background with gouache, it's such a beauty beyond words, amazing picture, no words......🏵️💮🌸💐🌹🌺🥀🌻🌼🌷👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🖼️🖼️🖼️🎨🎨🎨💋😊🖐️👏
I absolutely would love a tutorial in gouache from you! That would be quite lovely I am sure. Thank you Paul for another fabulous tutorial with these two pieces!
I enjoyed your tutorial, as usual. I liked the effect on black paper, especially with the gouache. I loved your bus painting too, but it would take me a lot of effort to use watercolor on black paper. I want to cast my vote for a gouache tutorial.
Patty- Since I'm partial to Gansai paints , I truly enjoyed the streetcar painting. I also enjoyed the bird painting. I think you did an excellent job on both . As always, I learned a lot. Thank you.
Love the paintings! It was a lot of work with the watercolours. If you do more paintings with black paper (which would be lovely), I'll buy a set of gouache as well. Thank you for this wonderful video.
As always, another Wonderful Wednesday! Brilliantly informative as to the difference between watercolor and gouache on black paper. I must agree with you that the first picture of the team would most certainly be considered a Fail. Had it not been for your masterful talent of layering techniques and your exquisite artwork, it would have been an Epic Fail in the hands of anyone else. On the other hand, the blackbird done in gouache is absolutely stunning!! And yes! I would love to see future tutorials using this medium. Particularly, since I have a brand new collection of 36 colors that have been anxiously awaiting my unboxing of them. I simply haven't worked up the courage! Thank you for such an informative tutorial, it was incredibly enlightening! 👩🦳🖌️
Whew, how difficult it seems and yet you produced a beautiful picture! Thanks for indulging your viewers request and facing the challenge, even if it was not your cup of tea ☕. I think black paper works best with gouache, as your demo suggests. And YES to the demo with gouache. Thanks again!
As per previous comments, thank you for this tutorial - I have not painted in gouache much, but now will try. I really like the black background. They may be "fails" in your mind, but they were wonderful experiences for this watcher.
I adored the blackbird, even when I counted its feet because I thought there were three! Counted three as well, so I think it may be bed time for me 😉
Haha same here! The less well known three-footed Blackbird!!
I agree the feet were done in such a confusing way it definitely looks like 3 feet. Your eyes are not playing tricks with you, but I guess even accomplished artists make mistakes, I definitely would have changed it to make it look more correct.

yes, please tell us more about gouache technique. And I really enjoyed your 3-legged blackbird 😁
😂
Very interesting, entertaining and beautiful. Even a blackbird with three claws, you just never stop learning🙂
Thank you 🤗 - yes, it's a new species!
It wasn't just me, then! Pressure to perform can make us all wobble sometimes.
I thought it was just me!😂 Funny bird…but lovely colours !! Thank you Paul, You’re a great teacher and your videos are always interesting!
Amazing to watch the layers transform the look
Especially like the reflection and shine of the roadway
I love the blackbird. His feet look so real and the branch too. Lovely painting. Thankyou Paul
Glad you enjoyed it

Paint them on white then!

As a beginner, this was terrific because of your repeated techniques, brush strokes and shadings. The reverse paper demonstrated the frustrations, and fixes, that I am experiencing putting brush and water to paper. Glad I found your channel .
Glad it was helpful!
Yes please. I've bought some but I'm not sure how to paint with it. Love your work! ❤
Will do!

Thank you! Cheers!
Thank you Paul! This video was very enjoyable. I would love to see more tutorials using gouache on black watercolor paper.
Wow! To be able to paint like this for the first time is like switching your thinking from the right side of the brain to the left... brilliant.
Delighted to hear and many thanks!
Yes, would love a gouache tutorial! I've been loving experimenting with it!!!♡
Coming soon!
Great tutorial, love the black bird on black. I didn't know about black paper, now I must try it !!
You made it possible. I had my doubts on black paper. Thanks for sharing!
Thankyou! XXX
Thanks as always - much appreciated
Before you even finish painting the black bird on the black w/c paper with GOAUCHE I can see you will do brilliantly.....Most interesting tutorial, Mr Clark!
Waouuuu, jolie maitrise, j'adore la reflexion et l'effet mouillé du sol...,c'est splendide...merci Paul
Marc aussi Frederic!
Thanks for yet another beautiful treat and inspirational lesson. I would like to see the streetcar again sometime on white paper in watercolor. I'll bet it knocks the Earl Grey right out of the park.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Thank You *Paul & Margot* for sharing your gift of painting w/ all of us & your step by step instructions
Thank you too!
well, I ordered and received a cheap set of gouache paint tubes and a 5x7 inch pad of Stonehenge cold press black paper to give this experiment a go. Just watched your video and I think this black paper experiment will be fun, especially with gold paints, too! wish me luck!
Good luck and have fun! 😁
I love both pictures, and the idea of using black paper. I will also try this, thank you. Best regards from Berlin Germany 👍🤗❤️
Yes please a full tutorial on painting with gouache
Will do!
Well done for sticking with the constantly disappearing paint on the tram - it was beautiful in the end 👍! The gouache for the blackbird was certainly bright and very effective - would love to see more. A floral or landscape could work well. Big thanks 🙏
Thank you very much!

Great stuff! - happy to help.
Great... Thank you sooooo much for this video. Black paper is the hell, but your paintings are heavenly. 👏👏👏
A tutorial on Gouache would be fun...and one on Casein as well. Thank you for the videos, they are always fun and educational!
You got it!
Love both paintings. Would very much appreciate a full tutorial or two on gouache. Thank you!

Great to hear and happy to help in any way!
Brilliant! Yes please, a tutorial using gouache.
Hi Adela - thanks for this ... and I'll try! - all the best - Paul
Yes please, Paul, I’d love a full tutorial done with gouache.
Got it!
I enjoyed your tutorial, as usual. I liked the effect on black paper, especially with the gouache. I loved your bus painting too, but it would take me a lot of effort to use watercolor on black paper. I want to cast my vote for a gouache tutorial.
Thank you so much for a magnificent tutorial, and yes please, I’de love to see you work with gouache!
You got it!
I really enjoyed the Gouache tutorial and would like to see more in the future please. Great tutorial as always .
Patty- Since I'm partial to Gansai paints , I truly enjoyed the streetcar painting. I also enjoyed the bird painting. I think you did an excellent job on both . As always, I learned a lot. Thank you.
Thank you so much!
Love the paintings! It was a lot of work with the watercolours. If you do more paintings with black paper (which would be lovely), I'll buy a set of gouache as well. Thank you for this wonderful video.
Beautiful Paul. A kingfisher with a fish would look great on black paper with gouache
Thanks so much Mike!
Never a fail, always learning something. I learned alot
