Great solution. I like it, but I have a question concerning the box construction. Do the 4x4 posts sit on top of the ground or do they sit into the soil where they require a concrete surface/ footing? (can not tell from the video)
@@oregonarboriculture4071We have a nosey neighbor who waits till people leave for work then walks around people’s yards inspecting like she owns their property.
Im actually looking for bamboo i can plant on my land. Im actually looking for the ones that have the thicker stems though. I Dont mind if it grows bit out of control. cause I dont mind either digging up the stuff dont want. Once the stem is thick enough. I can cut it down and be able to use the bamboo for stuff.
Do you think it’s a good idea to plant bamboo? I’m not a person like to take care of plants. 😅 I want to have some privacy along the long fence. I have a choice of bay tree hedge or bamboo. The first one takes years to grow, the 2nd one can do the job over a season but with more maintenance. I just want to get some right expectations about the maintenance work in long run and how would it look like being planted in containers (eg whether it grows tall). Cheers
Our landscape company builds, installs, and sets up a watering system for $800. This includes soil and plants. We recommend farnesia Nitida but there are a few other species that do well in this type of planter.
That what I did, but I’m going to redo it with bigger boxes soon. Right now I’m only have 2”*18” height*10” long. I lay square concrete on the bottom to prevent it from spreading/running
Can we please see an update on the growth? This looks great would love to contact you for the same solution in my backyard. Just curious about how fast and thick bamboo will grow contained by boxes.
@@oregonarboriculture4071 They'll spread in due time ! My neighbor's clumping bamboo still pops up here and there along property line -- after 6 yrs they've been removed !
As a kid I grew up in a yard with bamboo on three sides. It got huge, maybe 20' tall and 6-7' wide at the base. It really thrived in south Louisiana! One year we had a stretch of really cold winter-down in the teens for a week or so. Killed all the bamboo! It was one helluva mess to deal with all that dead bamboo. My Dad fought it for months-digging, and burning the remains. Have no idea what variety it was. I do love the look and wish it was not so invasive if it's in the ground. Like the idea of putting it in container/raised bed. Oh, and screw the noisy neighbor-she gets what she/he deserves! Thanks for the idea!
when you said the nosiest neighbors with the lowest fence , I lold. mine are horrendous purposely rebuilt the fence shorter, this ain't home improvement. I don't want to be your friend, let alone talk to you!
I am seriously thinking about putting up some kind of privacy fence very soon. My neighbor cut the bushes down just so she can see our house, and she is a creepy woman!
I hate nosy neighbors 😖 Your nosy neighbor might complain of bamboo leaves falling in their property though. A high enough fence will be enough I think.
You might live in an area where it is invasive, Arizona for example, here it is not invasive. (mostly because of thick clay soils) and to ensure it does not spread it is placed in a fabric lined box. Did you watch the video Margaret? Or is your name actually Karen?...
This is a great idea and a nice demo of how it was done. If possible, an update on how it looks now would be a nice addition to this video.
Great job, very informative. Thank you sir.
Brilliant idea.
That landscaping fabric is no match for the power of bamboo. That stuff will be growing out of the ground in no time. Haha
What size are the bamboo plants being installed? Gallons vs height?
I can so relate.

4x4’s don’t stick out, we use rocks under the corners to help keep them from rotting and to help level the boxes
At my side yard, I lay flat concrete and then build box like that to prevent rhinos from spreading.

Any larger (timber) bamboo will do, there are literally thousands of varieties
I love bamboo
Great work! Do you have an update video? Also I heard that bamboo can escape box after years, is it true?
It can, but if you maintain it it won’t.

Portuguese laurel is my favorite
Any suggestions for those of us that live in states that have winter’s?
Espalier fruit trees would be nice
Did the neighbours complaint once the leaves started to fall?
Can you give an idea of how much such a project would cost? Are you taking on clients? We're in Portland and this is exactly what we want.
Our landscape company builds, installs, and sets up a watering system for $800. This includes soil and plants. We recommend farnesia Nitida but there are a few other species that do well in this type of planter.
Pretty easy to duplicate though and might cost half that price if you do it yourself
I hope you answer this question. What if I built these box containers on top of cement? Will it work? My cement is all the way to the fence. 😒
It might stain the concrete as water drains through, but as long as the water can escape it would work just fine over concrete.

It takes about 3 years to fill in thick, a watering system (we used drip) is necessary for the summer months in the PNW
What is the size of the box? Depth and width?
He said in the video it’s 1 foot wide, 1 foot deep and 8 feet long with 5 bamboo plants
What type of bamboo are they?
Farnesia Nitida
That’s a beautiful way to have privacy. Will this work in a very shady area?
Bamboo needs sunlight, if the area gets at least 3 hours of direct sunlight bamboo could work.
@@oregonarboriculture4071 ok thank you. Any suggestions for a very shady area with little to no direct sun light?
@@gwenstone9685 smaller stem varieties do better in low light.
I thought that bamboo has very long roots that can go into the next house and break the foundations
It is extremely invasive. I haven't heard of the roots doing that. But bamboo is a grass/weed.
They have rhizomes that will spread, the box we build keeps them from spreading.

It's not invasive. Just break the new shoots
Ficus Nidia’s Hedges......
They will grow 40 feet high.
I LOVE Ficuses!💗👍👍
That’s great grow higher. Gotta block off annoying neighbors
I think the clumps will eventually break the boxes.
It takes about 15 years, but yeah most things don’t last forever
Or you can plant a Yuzu tree! 👍
Woow You are handsome🤭

You will be sorry when it takes over your neighbors yard
The whole point of the box is to keep that from happening, we haven’t lost one in 20 years.
You can think about it, but don't do it.
I am seriously thinking about putting up some kind of privacy fence very soon. My neighbor cut the bushes down just so she can see our house, and she is a creepy woman!
There are definitely some creeps out there
What type of bamboo is this again?
Fargesia Nitida🤓
Clumping Bamboo does nit need a container
True ish, but it still spreads, just less. So when planting on a fence line a box is really helpful and can also make it moveable.
I hate nosy neighbors 😖

They appear to have a large tree , so could be tit for tat 🤷♀️
Who's the kid with the camera, Tell him to blow his nose? An adult wouldn't sniff and snizzle sounds disgusting. But great job.
Good way to spread an invasive species into this country. I’m sure the neighbors will love it! And rats and mice like living in bamboo too!

Really shocked you pulled the "Karen" card because the poster was not intelligent. I am outta here. Gl with your channel, not.
You have to admit, it’s a Karen kind of thing to say or “a Karen says WHAT?”
