- In this video I will be restoring this 11 year old iPod Nano 5th Gen by replacing its battery and cleaning it out. I will also give it a new Griffin clear case. I got this iPod for cheap off Mercari and I thought it will make a great iPod restoration project. The iPod Mini it came with I will deal with later as the iPod mods or iflash mods are abit too expensive right now. I will soon do a video about using the iPod Nano 5th generation in 2020 to show you what its like using one..so stay tuned!

The iPod 5h generation is a beautiful mp3 player but they are a pain to repair
indeed...absolute nightmare to pull the board out from the housing and not damage it
5th gen Nanos still remains as my favorite Nano but in general, among all the iPods that I would use as a daily driver it would be the Mini or the 5th gen Classic/Video. This stays at home, sitting on the stereo system, which has a dock for iPods/iTouch. Of course not everyday, just when I want to listen to my tunes, otherwise it would have a bloated battery by now lol. But yeah, sometimes I would put the 2nd gen Nano or 4th gen Classic on the stereo dock.
I am sure you figured it out that the battery is glued ( just a small area) to the inside of the frame and so an old fashion thin razor blade inserted to cut through the adhesive would have made extraction much easier

Do you know how to fix audio jacks and bad batteries on these iPod Nanos 5th generation? I have a broken blue 5th generation ipod nano 16GB that needs to be repaired or something.
My Ipod nano 5th gen will only display the Apple logo even after being on charge and the standard reset. Is it a battery issue perhaps?

never ever use a heat gun on these the batteries are generally so fragile that they could easy start expanding to a degree where you can't get the circuit out or they might just explode in a nice lil nano fire.
How to release the glued items then?
@@JRenemarrazor blade should work. It should be the last option to blast your circuit and battery with uncontrolled heat.

I had a product red iPod nano 4th gen which I sold earlier this year because the battery started to bulge and it would press on the display from the inside and it would only last like 4 hours on one charge and I didn’t want to bother changing the battery knowing that they’re extremely difficult to open up especially if the battery already had expanded I was afraid of puncturing the battery somehow while trying to disassemble it.
I still have two 3rd gen nanos which I’ve never had any sort of battery related problems with.
I also have an iPod touch 4th gen which still works amazingly well and even the battery lasts for days.
Once the battery presses against the screen you can't really replace it because it's dangerous to open and could explode if the battery tears
So good option on not trying to fix it

Opening a 5th Gen Nano with expanded battery is way worse than what was depicted in the video. Just opened one, ripped the LCD cable when opening it as it pushed up towards the frame near the clickwheel. Eventually it screwed up the screen too. Mute switch, speaker cable got screwed up too so that all has to be replaced now. Well, I live and I learn.
Edit: iFixit tutorial also did not think to remove hold switch plate prior to removing the logic
board assembly, that’s extra dumb
Ahhh man I can imagine that sorta horror..The first time I opened a 2nd gen nano I ripped the clickwheel cable too, cause non of the stupid repair guides mentioned that it was hiding under the bottom metal shield...unibody designed are amazing right until it needs repair smh
Techformative Yeah mate, well do you have a picture do describe where the clickwheel flex is on the 2nd gen? I have actually bought all the nanos from 1st to 5th gen and performing battery replacements on them just so that they don’t explode down the road. Would be helpful if you have any pointers for them, thanks! Expedited the process for this 5th gen as it had a black spot already, luckily it ain’t too expensive to get the parts, didn’t get a steal but still a bargain.
Once u take the bottom plastic and shield off u'll need to flash a light in and u'll see the square friction fit connector connected to the motherboard..pull it off before pushing the board out...the 2nd gen's display is also super fragile. The first gen is a nightmare to repair. Taking it apart is super easy but putting the ribbons back together is annoying as hell cause they are between the board and the frame. Also the display on the 1st gen is glued in place like a rock..use heat to loosen the adhesive before even trying to pry it out if you do need to remove it. 3rd gen is my fave, easy to repair, easy to main. 4th and 5th are basically the same except for the camera. 6th gen, when opening it up, always disconnect the display cables using a plastic pry tool or a finger nail..NEVER use a metal tool or it will fry the directional diode near the processor. Also desolder the positive end on the battery before working on the board. 7th gen I havent opened one yet but the curved sides mean u have to directly pry on the lcd to get it out which im guessing causes it to break at most times..iv only seen it in videos, my one is still in a box somewhere...bad design honestly....also ifixit isn't perfect..most of their parts are no different in quality from the stuff on ebay, they just slap a brand sticker on it and increase the price x2
@@Techformative557 Thanks for the tips mate! I don’t use their parts at all. Usually I just refer to their guide to see how I can start getting into the device. Generally very careful with devices I work with other than being a little impatient sometimes which results in the damage done to the 5th gen. Seems like I wouldnt be too worried about the 6th and 7th gen for now. I don’t use metal tools on connectors at any cost, except if the battery is already disconnected, then no issue for me
@@Techformative557 mate, I just tried repairing 2 1st gens and 1 4th gen. Only 1 1st gen survived. All worked initially, but once I assembled the 1st gen, due to my lackluster soldering skills, the insulator of the battery wires shorted and it no longer charges. The 4th gen booted up fine initially when i tested it out of the case, now its dead after assembly, these iPods are really impossible to repair
my ipod does not start untill i connect it to the computer then it keeps showing apple logo on and off. can someone help please
Is the battery bad? The battery can cause all kinds of problems if it’s bad. If not then maybe depends on the hard drive depending on your model of iPod.

I have one but my Windows pc do not recognize it. could some of you'll help me know how to fix it? I want to sincronize it. I didn't used it like 4 years ago. I will be so thankfull if you can help me.
On windows you can try going into disk management to see if it sees it there.

I have another one that looks better than this..I left that one alone and messed with this one..the only visible damage is around the camera so its no issue...getting the clickwheel in was a pain in the ass though..it takes a while to settle
At least it’s useful and not a paperweight anymore

It is mostly make like one use product when batter went out, people buying new one.. Wasted the environment..
My Last Apple product (Not laptop) is iPhone X and XR.. and iPod classic... That is about it

The iPod nano 5th gen sounds terrible compared to the 3rd gen and also the clicker isn’t as good as it’s replicated by the internal speaker and not the clicker itself
I have a gen 5 w/ a problem. Plugging in headphones won’t work and it still plays on the built in speaker. Any advice??
