Great video content! Apologies for chiming in, I would love your initial thoughts. Have you ever tried - Riddleagan Possessing Piano Remedy (should be on google have a look)? It is an awesome one off product for learning how to play the piano easily minus the hard work. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my GF after many years got excellent success with it.
Is it really in Dm? Cause it really looks like Am. The melody of the lick is based on the A and these all are A minor notes... The A feels like the home also..
Great video! Will put it in my arsenal Btw, which application do you use to show the piano keyboard? Is it connected to DAW via midi or is it a hardware synth+app? I've searched a lot on UA-cam but haven't found anything useful(
I played the lick during jazz band in high school, then the band director played a variation of the lick, he called it "The Bebop Lick". it goes "D, D flat, C, D, B, G A"
Sorry if this might seem like a dumb question to jazz musicians, but in what way is FACE a d minor 9th chord? i mean sure its got everything else, but theres no actual D, so no root... wouldnt it make more sense to call this what it is, an F major7 chord?
Thor Hermann Oskarsson Was just wondering whether if he was sustaining a D note with his pedal, that would legitimise the f a c e chord as a Dm9 for you?
The notes FACE are indeed what make up an Fmaj7, so you could call it that if you wanted. However, it can also function as a rootless voicing for a Dm9 since it has the 3rd, 5th, 7th & 9th. The root note is actually not a very important note in the chord, the 3rd and 7th are what defines the chord. If you want, you could analyze what I was playing as an Fmaj7 chord with a Lydian scale lick starting on the major 3rd. Or you could view it as I explained (Dm9 with a Dorian lick). It's up to you! But as for your main question about why FACE is a Dm9 chord, it's just a rootless voicing!
Time to go play this on every instrument I have access to. (French Horn, Mellophone, Trumpet, Cornet, Trombone, Recorder, random flute thing I found in the attic, Viola even though I’ve never played that before, Acoustic Guitar, Another Acoustic Guitar, Another Acoustic Guitar, Electric Guitar, Another Electric Guitar, Another Electric Guitar, Piano Keyboard, Another Piano Keyboard, Piano, Another Piano, Pipe Organ, Melodica, and lastly, Kazoo!)
There are so many ways to analyze this lick! You could indeed start it on the root note. You could also do a whole bunch of other stuff such as using it over a 251, use it as a Lydian lick over a major chord, Dorian lick over a minor chord. There isn't really any 'correct' way to analyze it, just different perspectives.
By the way mate, you don't use Roman numerals for melodic scale degrees, just for harmonic changes. (Melodic scale degrees are in Arabic numbers and can have a caret on top: ^5 ^6 ^7 etc.)
you can often omit the root of the chord when playing 9 chords. Mind that when you want to play a full 9 chord, you have to play at least 5 notes - and that is a lot for one hand. This is an economic way of playing. Besides, you can do different variations on the chord, and without the root it just achives different character.
Hey Simon.. am loving your vids but am a bit bamboozled in this one by your thinking of B in the D dorian scale as the #6th and not just the 6th?.. am I missing something?.. Thanks.. really like your approach :)
PianoPig Have you seen bass player Adam Neely's video where, all he plays for 5 hours is The Lick! He also has the T shirt [he definitely has earned the right to wear it!] ;●) I'm near Winchester, whereabouts are you?
It depends on where you choose to start this lick. If you like to think of the starting note to be the root note then absolutely! I personally prefer to start it on the 5th :)
I get your point. I guess because it's such a popular lick it's known to start pretty much anywhere or fit any context of the key. I guess when I hear it in my head I just hear it starting on the 1 of a minor key.
_Adam Neely is typing..._

The iconic 5 notes theme from "Close Enconters of the Third Kind".

He Is using the Dorian scale which Is playing which un this case would be playing a scales Cmajor from it's second note D(if i can put ir that way)
Great video! Will put it in my arsenal

I personally use synthesia for this and just connect my keyboard to my pc. Though the program they're using in the video is different than synthesia

Thanks, time to add this to every song i play on the piano
Man lol hearing it played in a row like that.. Kinda diminishes its color. Good lick tho
It sure is a good lick! If you really want to see the color sucked out of it, you should check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/lSXxEdaOqgU/v-deo.html
PianoPig@ nnooope. not doing dat

It’s not a good lick
It’s THE lick
Is it just me that sees that there is written face in the chord that he does lmao
Same

Maybe he'd just pedaled a D and was ripping "The Lick" with his RH?.. ;)
+Robert Brittain not quite sure what you mean...

I'm on vacation without my guitar. Will "The Lick" work over FMa7, G7 and Bm7b5?
Can someone tell me why he called it a rootless d minor 9 instead of what looks like to me an obvious Fmaj7?
Time to go play this on every instrument I have access to. (French Horn, Mellophone, Trumpet, Cornet, Trombone, Recorder, random flute thing I found in the attic, Viola even though I’ve never played that before, Acoustic Guitar, Another Acoustic Guitar, Another Acoustic Guitar, Electric Guitar, Another Electric Guitar, Another Electric Guitar, Piano Keyboard, Another Piano Keyboard, Piano, Another Piano, Pipe Organ, Melodica, and lastly, Kazoo!)
And flute. Forgot flute.
Shouldn't one traditionally start the lick on the root? This would make it I-II-b3-IV-II-bVII-I, right? All the blue notes (minus #4)?
There are so many ways to analyze this lick! You could indeed start it on the root note. What were the notes in your last chord in your opening pianopug advertisement?
This has been driving me insane for ages, BUT DOES THE LICK HAVE A NAME
The Lick 😉
its litterally called THE lick lmao
Do you know what we're saying here in Brazil? You broke your balloon's mouth! Very perceptive.
My paino teacher will hate me for this but its worth it
Yooooo, Return the slab, or suffer my curse.. dude looks like King rhamses (a compliment)
Why did you call it a g minor 9 but didn't use rhe g
who was the guitarist in the second example?
I'm confused, how is it Dmin9 if he is not playing D? Im new to piano please don’t judge me.
you can often omit the root of the chord when playing 9 chords. Mind that when you want to play a full 9 chord, you have to play at least 5 notes - and that is a lot for one hand. This is an economic way of playing. Besides, you can do different variations on the chord, and without the root it just achives different character.
Also in this situation, it is assumed that the bass player will be playing the D note. So for the piano, D is omitted hence a rootless D voicing.
When your video is 5 years late to the meme
You forgot the Xmen animation intro

Oh get it now.. its the raised 6th of the natural minor.. duh..
You got it! It's good you worked it out yourself as well :)

Try to watch the video at 0.5x speed, very entertaining
What does "Characteristic of D-dorian mean"?? I know what dorian means, but not "characteristic".
Just means the type of sound it creates
@@Piano_Pig Well you lost me there, but that was inevitable

Awesome :)
But when is it appropriate to use the lick?

Disappointed, did not play the REAL licc (defgecd)
These are the same intervals, just a different key. But actually, you could play that in the same key as showed in the video (D minor).
@João Souza, the video itself is not D minor... it is A minor.
I love your accent where are you from?
Haha thanks! I'm from the South of England :)
we got licklolled too many times
A B C D B G A
I’m confused why he call that F7chord a D
Rootless voicing
hello simon
Hey!
go to twitter i want to ask you something
You shouldn't have called it the key of Dm.. Dm would have been D C F G E C D

Genuinely can't work out if this is serious or not.
I remember you haven’t heard of it in the comments
