  • I'm a nightmare when it comes to keeping my knives nice and sharp. I'm not great with a whetstone so normally rely on a honing steel but the knives soon lose their edge. So when HORL contacted me about this exciting product, I jumped at the chance to try it out. And guess what? It works great! Its so good and so easy that even I can get my knives nice and sharp! My son who lives in Germany put me on to this sharpener. He explained how easy it is to get the right angle across the whole blade. He has had his nearly 3 years. I have just bought one and it is brilliant, especially for my arthritic hands. It is so easy to use. One tip my son told me was to mark the blade edge with an Edding pen before using the sharpener first time. That way you can tell when the blade is correctly sharpened across the whole blade to the correct angle. The magnet is strong enough to hold narrower blades firmly. There is no need to add hard pressure when using.

    I got one of these a few weeks ago and thought I would throw in my tuppence. Firstly what a lovely and well made piece of equipment, the sharpener is deceptively heavy and very satisfying to hold and use. With regards the sharpening, I have found you really need to select the correct angle for the knife or it doesn't work. I tried to sharpen my first knife at 15 (research online told me it should probably be 15 but it was inconclusive to be fair) and I tried and tried and was very disappointed with the results, not particularly sharp, no better than I could get with my cheap pull through knife sharpener. I followed the Horl guide and switched to 20 and it was like night and day, very sharp and now its sharp its very easy to keep sharp. I would say if in doubt go for 20.
    I wasn't sure whether or not to get one as they are very expensive, there are a few negative reviews online but I found these tend to be from "enthusiasts" that love talking about whetstones. So I did a comparison. My dad was a carpenter and as he spent his life sharpening and honing chisels, is pretty handy with a whetstone. He can get a knife probably ever so slightly sharper with the stone than I can with the Horl. I can't use the stone at all and just end up with a horribly blunt or patchy blade (blunt in some bits and sharp in others). So, if you have the skill to use a whetstone properly then you are better using a whetstone, if like 99% of the population you don't then the Horl will get it plenty sharp enough.
    Its really easy to use, don't push too hard as tempting as it is. On things like a chefs knife that curves upwards towards the blade you need to kind of steer the roller a bit but you soon get the hang of it. When you use the diamond cutting disc for a start you do create a bit of a burr, what I found is good for that is switching to the honing disc and doing a couple of passes at a time on each side switching back and forth, that knocks the burr off and buffs is up so its really sharp. To be fair thats kind of what they tell you in the instructions but I found switching sides say half a dozen times doing 2-3 passes per side worked really well.
    In summary, if you are a knife enthusiast then you probably already own sharpening equipment that will get the job done as well as the Horl so you don't need one. If you aren't, just want to get the knife sharp as easily as possible and have a penchant for very nice pieces of equipment then get one of these!

      Just received my Horl 2 after watching this vid, unfortunately I’m very disappointed. I’ve been sharpening my knifes on a wet stone for years, now after using the Horl, it doesn’t sharpen them as good. Also, if you have smaller knifes, it’s less effective as the blade can move during the process. If your happy with an average sharpness, this will do the trick, but is nothing compared to a wet stone.

    Professional sharpener here with a few questions.
    1.How do you maintain a consistently symmetrical bevel with this thing?
    2.Five minutes is a looong time to sharpen a knife that's even moderately well cared for. A 1k grit whetstone and a 3k grit whetstone takes - at most - about one minute each.
    3.I see no way this thing can do chip repairs or fix damage of any kind. You might as well use a honing rod.
    4.It's a single grit, right? A very blunt knife won't sharpen off this in any kind of reasonable time.
    5.How would this sharpen knives with even a small micro-bevel?
    6.Why hone on this instead of leather, newspaper, or your jeans?
    I can't see a use case for this product.

    • @feralgrandad4429
      @feralgrandad4429 Рік тому +1

      You can buy several different "grits" to get a progression. However for the price of the original sharper I brought 260g/800g/2000g king stones. Much better in my humble opinion.

    • @BanconotaBill
      @BanconotaBill Рік тому

      Nah mate, I've had both and I tossed away the Tumbler
      The Horl may be more pricey but you're paying for quality, their magnet is a lot stronger, the discs roll a lot better (whereas the tumbler's disc felt a bit braked) and you have interchangeable discs (3k and 6k grits, also a really coarse diamond disc for really dull blades)
      Also, the honing disc in the Horl is ceramic instead of Tumbler's steel disc, which is waaaay better for cleaning without damaging the side of the blade you just sharpened
      If you're sharpening really cheap blades I still won't reccomend the tumbler, since you get the same product with the Horl Cruise, at basically the same price but better construction quality

    • @BanconotaBill

    Nice idea, looks great, but somewhat inefficient. I’ve got a sharpener which has 3 slots, the last being the ceramic slot for honing. It sharpens within 6 strokes. 3 in the sharpener and 3 in the honer. HOWEVER, if you have expensive, good quality knives, this HORL is exactly what you need to keep them sharp and without damaging the blade. I just have some cheapo Sheffield Richardson knives. The cheap sharpener has worn them to nothing and has actually damaged the blade. That’s why you need a HORL.
