@@jcsk8 I wouldn't say they sound better, but it's definitely its own thing! A lot of it is also how Aquarians FEEL on Ludwig shells. I actually always kind of liked Ludwig's factory heads back when they still made heads, so it's kind of like that but with Aquarian quality (I think Aquarian certainly makes their heads with more consistency and durability than everyone else).

Thanks for proving a 13" rack tom can work beautifully with a 14" floor tom. I have all of these sizes in my early 80's Gretsch kit and could never seem to get enough spread between these two drums. Time to revisit!
If I may suggest: try a thinner response drumhead (like a Diplomat) on your 13" tom and a slightly thicker one (e.g. Ambassador ir Ambassador X) on your 14" floor tom. It will very likely help to raise the pitch of the tom and lower the floor tom tuning range.
@@aristidescavalcante3516 Good idea. I've used Coated Emperors on all of my batter heads for decades, so maybe I should try Coated Ambassadors on all of the rack toms for this set-up configuration.
I have to admit, I've never liked the sound of black dots. This video just changed my mind. The tone, the full ness, everything about it sounds FANTASTIC! Thank you for sharing, Carter.
Your ability to showcase what you find interesting is remarkable. Randomly tried out the cs black dots on my toms after years of being an Evans guy. I think they might be my favorite tom heads I’ve ever used. Feel of a one ply head but they have the durability and big sound of a 2 ply head. The black dots also match that black piano finish of the kit nicely!
rippindrummer666 I never used them but then I bought a Gretsch USA Custom, they sound amazing on those drums. Sound great on the Ludwig Club Dates I have.
I love your drumming Carter, there’s always something that sticks with me throughout the rest of the day. Today it’s the closed roll going into the lower floor tom, and the decrescendoing buzz roll on the snare
I love Ludwig. My first kit was a 5pc Ludwig blue Vistalite with a Ludwig Speed-King Pedal, 13" Sabian AA Fusion HH, 20" Sabian ride and a 16 an 18" Sabian crash. I miss that kit.
It seems like black dots just belong on the Ludwigs! They sound amazing! Love that kick too! Thank you for keeping the snares on while running around the toms. I really like a little snare buzz in there too! Just adds a little something!
I had those same drums back in the mid 80's..... Bought them off a Berklee student who was upgrading. Lol Also had a drink with Tony Williams after a show he did in Boston in late 80's... What a nice encounter that was. Great deep sound/playing on this video.
I agree. But aesthetically there's nothing like simple clear un coated. But for the sound I go for the coated. To get the crack and The crispness baby.
@drums bang you guys know UA-cam is like way better about handling audio now right? Also carter knows what he’s doing he isn’t driving the signal too hard on his upload
Sounds good. I have a 10-piece, black set of Ludwig's, with two 24" bass drums from 1979. Silver dots. Evans blue hydrraulics on the bottoms of the toms.
They resonate nicely. No ugly over tone ringing. Good attack. Decent midrange. Fairly warm but still crisp. Nice job on the major chord 5, 1, 3, 5, 8/1 floor tom to top rack.
As almost cliche at this point as it is, I was really inspired by your playing. Every time you upload I find myself trying to replicate whatever groove or specific feel you had in a video. Awesome stuff, always a blast. (Also made me get my first hats - the signature OM 15", but managed to get a prototype from second hand, half price and it sounds amazing.)

good to see cs dots being used the right way. back in the day, everyone just taped em up. to me, they sounded perfect wide open. just the right amount of controlled resonance and mid range punch. this sound so amazing...as usual.
@@cartermclean would love to know what you are using to record all of this. it always sounds so great to me. i've always been a big fan of less mics. i usually used a pair of coles or u67's and a d12 or d25 out front of the kit when i was recording myself or had great drummers to work with. i can tell the biggest part of your sound is your playing the tuning you get and mic placement. your demos always blow me away. you are honestly the only drummer i ever listen to on youtube. generally i avoid listening to drums by themselves. i need music...but your playing is always so musical. keep up the great work.
