With his trusty companion Petra the German Shepherd, he pitches a Hilleberg Soulo and explains the geological for nation of the Dartmoor Tors. With Nearly four decades of wild camping experience, Shamus shares his skills and knowledge on Dartmoor National Park, where he continues to live and work.
Great video, nice humour, fabulously well behaved hound.
Thank you very much, I really appreciate that 😊👍🐶
Thank you, I really enjoyed your video. Also thanks for the explanation about the way this beautifull landscape was formed,
Thank you for watching, much appreciated 😊🐶
Great video and Beautiful nature. Nice dog. Enjoyed this video very Much 🤗😄😄
Thank you very much, that’s really appreciated 😊
I've never heard sheep being called that before but I like it and what a well behaved dog petra is with them sheep about. Love the information you provided again would love to do a camp with you sometime and would feel very safe going with you because you know your stuff😁👍
That seems a great tent, stands up to the wind very well. Would be great for some NZ weather conditions.
Like your video looking forward to more
Thanks, Andy - Much appreciated 😊
Awesome video- gosh that was a bit windy! Great example of what a good tent and experience allows you to do.
Working on my experience and saving for a tent! Thanks for the the inspiring and informative videos
Hi Amanda - thank you very much 😊 To be fair, camping in wind is a confidence thing more than anything else - quite enjoyable really. Anyway, good luck and stay safe 👍
Such a lovely dog how great not only to be in such a scenic location but to have your best friend with you!
Hi Beth, thank you 😊 Petra enjoys it, that’s for sure 🐾
Great video. My wife and I were due to wild camping on Dartmoor during storm Alex but she caught a cold just before the weekend. I’m gutted I didn’t go out on my own
Thanks, Marc. Thats a real shame for your wife and yourself... See you out there some time 👍
Another top video mate thanks.
Hi Joe, thank you - your support is fabulous, much appreciated 😊👌
Great Video. Hilleberg recommend fastening the tent to your rucksack before trying to erect it. So in 40mph gales it doesn’t go fly abouts.
My Lurcher (read mongrel) hates the wind & especially the rain.
Would have legged it back home without me.
Good tip! What as shame he doesn't like the wind. Petra is just un-phased by anything really. She is a delight to camp with. Thanks again, Michael - stay safe 👍
That’s a good tip bud 👍🏽
Hi Shamus and Petra.. Once again thank you for your time and effort to produce such a great video. Really like the way you show the inner tent unclipped to give you more room to set up. My solution re the pegs is 6 Hilleberg V pegs for the base of the tent, 6 Hilleberg Y pegs for the Guys (keeping it simple), and an additional 4 V pegs to double pegg the windward back and sides. Yes a few extra grams but then who is counting haha..
Thank you Tom - Thanks for the encouragement 😊 I’m with you on the pegs / double pegging. I have some reservations on Y pegs for guylines though - they can be quite harsh 👍
Lovely video as always! Treated to a colourful sunrise after all that wind, what a view to wake up to!
Max Trafford - Thank you Max - much appreciated - I see you were out there not so long ago too 👍
@@outdoorsinspiration9284 Yes, I was down at Feather Tor👍 Hoping to get back out this weekend, might see you around if you're out again!
Great film again Shamus, I wondered at the weekend if you had ventured out, so was delighted to see the notification last night. Hope you have a good week and looking forward to Thursday’s video. Stay safe. Hi to Petra too.
Thank you, Michael and woof from Petra 😊
Great to see you two out enjoying yourselves no matter what! 🤟🏼
Thanks Greg - we just love being ‘out there’ 😊👌
Great video once again. Thank you. Another option on the peg front is to use a heavy rock on top of the actual pegs you feel maybe insecure. Abrasion can be an issue in strong winds, so a sock, stuff sack or another item that you don't mind getting wet/damp between the rock and the peg will avoid the guide line rubbing on the rock. Alternatively you can always carry an anvil or bag of cement. The anvil is more versatile. Handy to bend your spork back into shape, or create that wrought iron garden gate you've been meaning to make for some time. Fortunately those pocket rockets kick out some heat. Thanks again for the video Shamus & Petra. Looking forward to the next one. :-)
Haha 😂 Thanks Brad, yes I’d imagine an Anvil would be handy, along with a welding set 😂👌 - I like the idea of abrasion protection too 👍
The Peg issue... I usually carry about 4 Delta Pegs. They have never failed me from huge family to small hiking tents. Bit of a pain to store while hiking but certainly give that piece of mind
Thanks 😊 There's few folk that recommend them as good grip 👍
@@outdoorsinspiration9284 very simply design but very very effective.
Hi 🙋♀️ nice place for camping ⛺️
I love it too!
U have my support 😁
Was quite windy !
Hi there 👋 Thank you, I hope all is well on your side of the world 😊
Petra is SOoooo well behaved! I’ve taken my young Border terrier out in a few camps and I’ve got about as much control ( at the moment ) as a kite in that storm you camped in 🤣 .... Another great upload 👍🏼
christian - thank you 😊 I have a Border Terrier cross Lakeland as well - that’s why you don’t see him in the videos 😂
Actually, he’s a good dog in his own way, I’m sure yours is too 😊
Petra is a credit to you, so obedient and well natured. Great vid 👍
Thanks Jody, she is a fabulous dog 😊👍🐶
@@outdoorsinspiration9284 we have 2 Lakeland terriers and the clue is in the name to their characters 🙈
@@jodyjohnstone3520 We have a Lakie x Border - I absolutely adore Lakeland terriers - You can see him here: ua-cam.com/video/CH0VVCXCRDc/v-deo.html
Hi Shamus. Lovely time lapse photography and some very simple explanations of the geomorphology add up to another brilliant wildcamping video! Petra is an absolute credit to the hours of training that you must invested in her. Looking forward to the next video. ATVB Graham
Thanks Graham, just back from a windy night... 😊👍
Very nice:)
Love you’re videos Séamus , Petra is a dream . Love GSD’s so intelligent and loving. Have one coming in the new year 🤞The footage was excellent, you capture the weather brilliantly. How do you rate the Soulo ? I’m looking at 4 season tent at the moment. Terra Nova Southern Cross is catching my eye . Condensation seems to hamper the Soulo . I’d be using all year round, I’m wondering if it’s overkill. We do get very inclement weather here as you probably know 👌👌Atb Tony 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
Hi Tony, and thank you. I think the Southern Cross is a cracking tent. Every shelter or tent suffers with condensation I guess. I don’t use a Soulo anymore, I’ve preferred the Anjan 2 for some time as it has more space and ventilation for one man and his dog 🐶 Petra has had pups, we kept one of them (Scout) and I was hoping to take him out with us as well, unfortunately my house move is taking way too long so that hasn’t happened yet - he is an enormous and very energetic dog, so I was hoping to try him in an Allak 2…
But back to the Southern Cross, I’ve always liked that design 👍🐶👍
@@outdoorsinspiration9284 go raibh maith agát Séamus. Exciting times so 👌 Yes the SC2 is looking tempting 🤞🤞Atb Tony
Fascinating to hear how the tor’s formed, and became what we can see today. I enjoy exploring the nooks and crannies, some are so intriguing, like Oke Tor, with its network of corridors and sheltered areas, very welcome to rest in. Love to hear more about the different lichens, and grass types too. Enjoy watching you and Petra working together, she’s a clever lass, great team bond 😁👍
Hi Joe, thank you very much 😊
Grasses, reeds and sedges are something I would like to understand a little better. WRT lichens; there are just so many aren’t there. All the best from Petra and I 😊
@@outdoorsinspiration9284 yes I’m only aware of a couple of common names, like map lichen, and the beard that you mentioned. There is some lovely flat curly leave stuff on high willhayes, I’ve no idea what it is. I’d love to know what type of grass/moss it is, that makes the tor areas so comfy to rest on..😊
Cycling Joe - sound like a mission to find out 👍
Windswept and interesting
Haha : 😂 Thanks Steve
Good video mate. I'm not really bothered about dogs but Petra is lovely 😊👍. Keep them coming
Thank you, very much appreciated - I will keep them coming for sure 👍
Hi Shamus, great video. I really like your style of presentations, although it would be very helpful for a favoured kit list for these conditions, preferred sleeping bags etc?
I’m going to do an update on that Mike - good call 👍 Have you seen my 8kg rucksack video on this channel - there is some variation but pretty much it (different tent)
good vid m8
Thank You, Jason 😊 👍
So nice to see you and Petra, especially since I am looking for a lighter tent than my Hilleberg Niak for me and my Bavarian Mountain Hound.
How is it so sleep in a Soulo with a German Shepard? The tent I am planning to get is the Enan and I am hesitating wheter it might be too small for me and my dog.
Only found your channel yesterday and I absolutely love your content 👍 I've gained a lot of great tips from your videos and they have definitely inspired me to get new gear and get back out to the great outdoors 👍
Keep up the great work mate
P.S. Have you got any recommendations for sleeping bags etc? I'm looking to spend quite a bit of time out in the winter so I'm looking for a nice a cozy sleeping bag for the colder weather
That is absolutely fabulous 👍 Thank you for watching and for commenting 🐶😊
@@outdoorsinspiration9284 No worries mate. What was the sleeping bag you were using in this video buddy?
Love the channel, I sensed that possibly you do or have done stuff linking this as a job possibly?? Wondered if a video giving your background and experience would be good, not sure if you have done one if so my apologies
Great video and very informative. You mentioned about some longer pegs for the wildwood side, have you considered just double pegging for extra security..
Thats's a really good idea, Andy. I have subsequently considered it, but only had the required number of pegs. I'll include a couple of my longer, light tube pegs in the kit - that way I could double-peg or just use them on their own. Thanks for that, it's much appreciated. 👍
Thank you Shamus another enjoyable video. Sorry I have another question...is there a reason you have the Soulo in red rather than a colour that melts into the background? 🤔😊
Yes 😊👌👍 - All my other tents are green. Dartmoor isn’t the coldest climate around but we often have snow throughout winter - I wanted a red tent for those happy occasions when the snow is on the ground. Also for the gloomy deaths of winter. It makes for more dramatic pictures - that’s the truthful reason. Next week I’ll probably be out in the Anjan 2 which is a deep rich green 😊
@@outdoorsinspiration9284 really good reasons, thanks for sharing and pandering to my curiosity 😊 btw it is a great colour.
Another great video Shamus. Missed the Petra cam footage and what happened to the fairy lights? Cracking sunrise.
Thanks Andy. There was a technical difficulty with PetraCam - I had accidentally flipped it to the reverse camera (which had a cover on) - Oh well... 😂
Love it shamus ...unfortunately Petra steals. The show lololol keep them coming mate
Thanks mate, and don't I just know she does 😂🐶😂
Shamus, can you tell me if wild camping is allowed at the moment. Planning a trip to fogging tor this week if it’s not against the law.
Keep up the good work shipmate 👍
Hello Chris 😊 - Dartmoor National Park Authority currently states that "Wild camping and overnight stays in motorhomes are not allowed". This is in line with the law in England during the lockdown period. 👍😊🐶
Thank for getting back to me so swiftly. I still think I will go just for the day trip👍
Glad to see you braving the wind and getting out for a night's camp. I'm determined to get another night in during October. The thing I find most off putting about camping in the wintery months are the shorter days. I don't mind a bit of wind, rain and even cold but feel I need a slightly larger set up for the extra time I'm going to be spending under cover. And I doubt I'll be doing it in the tarp.😁
Thanks for commenting, that’s absolutely the biggest issue with winter. Although, saying that, there’s always time to film cooking, and relaxing 😊
@@outdoorsinspiration9284 That's true but I'd rather be hiking as I can get bored easily. I have started making short videos but feel more suited to radio rather than TV.😁 I might do them in more of a voice over style. And my trail cooking is just boil in the bags or dehyrated meals. They've all been seen before. I could download a few films to take with me I supposed. Rgds, John.
@@Jarbie - Aye, what ever happened to this paper things... Books I think they were called 😂- The trouble is t hey take up pack space and don't tolerate damp climates very well.
@@outdoorsinspiration9284 Indeed. I do use the Kindle app on my phone. Been rereading some Sherlock Holmes stories on my last couple of camps. ATB. John.
Fab video, thanks for sharing your experience 😊
I am planning on a Dartmoor camp soon, do you recommend a good first toor fairly near a carpark... Well walking distance 😏
Hi Stuart - Great Staple east to find and high up with parking near by 👍👍👍
Cheers, thanks for the tip , cool dog bytheway. I plan on taking one of my English Shepherds with me
Here’s a the official camping map: www.dartmoor.gov.uk/about-us/about-us-maps/new-camping-map
If you have a look to the West of Staple Tor the re is Cox Tor and to the South Pew / Feather Tor... all fairly close to Pork Hill car park 👍
The English Shepherd is a little like an Aussie Shepherd isn’t it?
Great video
I think I camped in exactly the same spot a couple weeks ago were u at mid staple tor ?
Subbed 👍
Hello, thanks for the sub, I had already subscribed to your great channel 😊 That spot is on the North side of Great Staple looking toward Roos Tor 👍
@@outdoorsinspiration9284 ah right
Cracking spot 👍
👍
Enjoyed that one again Shamus. Hilleburg looks amazing, but waaaaaaay out of my league. I have to stick to the Naturehike for a while longer yet
Thank you 😊 - that reminds me, I’ve got a 3F UL tent that I need to take out this winter. Both they and Naturehike make some great gear 👍
Have you tried the delta ground anchors
Hi Alan, no I haven't. They come highly recommended, I know 😊👍
...YOWZA.
As advertised..(!)
Fantastic, thank you 😊
The Tarptent models have those useless long pegs... that’s how I’ve heard them described. I rather like them 😁
Haha 😂 sounds like an advertising tag line to me 😊👍
Outdoors Inspiration I’m not affiliated... other brands are available 😀
